        Association of Metabolic Syndrome with Total Testosterone and Homocysteine Levels in Male Korean Workers

        Background: Low testosterone is associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS), and homocysteine (Hcy) is elevated in individuals with MetS. We investigated the relationships of total testosterone (TT) and serum Hcy levels with MetS in male Korean workers. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study including 8,606 male workers, aged 20 to 58 years, who underwent a physical examination in 2015. MetS was diagnosed based on the criteria of the 2009 harmonized definition, while the Korean standard for waist circumference (WC) was used. Participants’ biochemical parameters, including TT and serum Hcy, were measured, and participants were divided into quartiles. Multiple logistic regression models were used to estimate the association of MetS and its individualcomponents depending on TT and serum Hcy quartiles. Results: The prevalence of MetS in the study population was 16%. TT was lower in participants with MetS than in those withoutMetS (P<0.001). By contrast, Hcy level was similar between groups (P=0.694). In multiple logistic regression analysis, the oddsratio for the lowest TT quartile was 1.29 (95% confidence interval, 1.06 to 1.57) after adjusting for potential confounders. Participants with lower TT were more likely to have high WC, hypertriglyceridemia, and low high density lipoprotein levels. Serum Hcy levels were not significantly associated with MetS. Of the five components of MetS, only WC was significantly associated with serum Hcy. Conclusion: In male Korean workers, TT may be an independent predictor of MetS, and serum Hcy levels could be a marker of abdominal obesity. However, future prospective studies are needed.

        건강한 여성 근로자에서 Apolipoprotein E와 혈중 지질 농도와의 관련성

        Objectives: Plasma lipid profiles and Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) are established risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD). The knowledge of lipid profile may estimate the potential victims of cardiovascular disease before its initiation and progression and offers the opportunity for primary prevention. The most common ApoE polymorphism has been found to influence plasma lipid concentrations and its correlation with CVD has been extensively investigated in the last decade. Methods: The ApoE polymorphism and its influence on plasma lipid were investigated in healthy woman workers. The information on confounding factors was obtained through a self-administered questionnaire and ApoE polymorphism was investigated using PCR. Results: The relative frequencies of alleles E2, E3 and E4 for the study population (n = 305) were 0.127, 0.750 and 0.121, respectively. ApoE polymorphism was associated with variations in plasma HDL-cholesterol lipid profile. In order to estimate the independent effects of alleles E2 and E4, as compared with E3, on lipid profile, multiple regression was performed after adjustment for confounding variables such as age, BMI, blood pressure, education status, insulin, fasting glucose, HOMA-IR, menopause. ApoE2 had a negative association with HDL cholesterol and ApoE4 had a positive association with LDL cholesterol. Conclusions: This study identified that the ApoE and CVD risk factors contribute to the lipid profiles, similar to other studies. The analysis including dietary intake and other gene in further studies may help to identify clear effects on lipid profiles as risk factor for CVD.

      • 사회문제 중심의 지역화 교재구성의 실제 : 울산지역을 중심으로 in the case of Ulsan

        The goal of this study is to introduce regional social problems that might embody the essence of region in the social curriculum at elementary school social studies, to constitute learning material in an integrated way, and to embody a proper teaching model. In order to reach this goal, first, this study provides a standard that refers to general theoretical research about region and social problems and principles and method in text composition. Second, this study abstracts social problems relating to the Ulsan region and classifies their features for the development of integrated teaching material for inter-studies. Third, this study embodies the teaching-learning model of the social studies curriculum at the heart of the content of the text and tries to apply it to the school classroom environment. Especially, in order to make teaching material that addresses key social problems of the region, this study divides social problems in the Ulsan region into problems of social organization, social disorganization, and deviation, and divides them again into the following problem types: economic, regional gap, city, environmental, home, and crime. Furthermore, it suggests a procedure for text composition and clearly shows, as related constituents, the key idea, the goals, the teaching-learning process, and the assignment. It takes into account Learner's development of social consciousness and experiential Level as much as possible.

        Ge(Ⅳ)-Mercaptoacetic Acid 착물에 의한 흡착벗김 전압-전류법

        The adsorptive stripping voltammetric determination method of trace germanium (IV) using mercaptoacetic acid as a ligand was studied. Optimal conditions were found to be 0.25 M NaCl solution (pH 6.0) containing mercaptoacetic acid concentration of $5.0{\times}10^{-6}M$. The peak potential appeared at - 1.402 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Effects of sodium chloride concentration, mercaptoacetic acid concentration, and accumulation time for the complex of Ge(IV)-Mercaptoacetic acid on the peak current were studied. Amberlite IRC-718 chelating resin was applied to the separation of Ge(IV) from other metal ions. Mercaptoacetic acid를 이용하여 흡착벗김 전압전류법으로 미량의 게르마늄을 정량하는 방법을 연구하였다. 이때 지지전해질은 0.25 M NaCl 용액(pH 6.0)을 사용하였고, mercaptoacetic acid의 농도는 $5.0{\times}10^{-6}M$이 되도록 조절하여 실험하였다. Ge(IV)-Mercaptoacetic acid 착물의 봉우리 전위는 -1.402V vs. Ag/AgCl에서 나타났다. 착물의 봉우리 전위에 미치는 NaCl의 농도, mercaptoacetic acid의 농도, 축적 시간등에 대하여 조사하였다. 또한, Amberlite IRC-718 킬레이트 수지를 다른 이온들로 부터 Ge(IV)을 분리하는데 적용하였다.

        뽕잎 추출물배지를 이용한 눈꽃동충하초(Paecilomyces japonica) 균사체 배양액의 여드름균(Propionibacterium acnes) 생육억제 효과

        This study was carried out to investigate the growth inhibition of Propionibacterium acnes by mycelial culture broth of Paecilomyces japonica in the Mulberry leaf extract. The growth inhibition effect of P. japonica mycelial culture broth against P. acnes in various concentration of Mulberry leaf extract was the most effective in 3% Mulberry leaf extract. The inhibition effect of P. japonica mycelial culture broth against P. acnes according to the culture time was the moust effective after 25 days mycelial cultivation. As the treating amount of the mycelial culture broth was increased, the growth inhibition effect against P. acnes was increased gradually. The growth inhibition effect of mycelial culture broth against P. acnes according to the time of heat treatment was active by 45min at 100℃, while it was inactive more than 60min at 100℃. This result suggested that the antibacterial materials are possible to be glycoside or peptides. Taken together P. japonica mycelial culture in the Mulbarry leaf extract has a possibility to be an element of skin -care cosmetics regulating the acnes.

        Impact of ENPP1 K121Q on Change of Insulin Resistance after Web-Based Intervention in Korean Men with Diabetes and Impaired Fasting Glucose

        Ectoenzyme nucleotide pyrophosphate phosphodiesterase 1 (ENPP1) gene has been studiedin relation to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and insulin resistance (IR). We hypothesizedthat the difference in genotype may be one of the factors that affect the outcome ofintervention. We genotyped 448 men with fasting glucose ≥ 5.6 mM/L, including 371 insubjects with K allele (KK) (69 control group [CG]; and 302 intervention group [IG]) and 77in subjects with Q allele (KQ+QQ) (13 CG and 64 IG). The web-based intervention based ona lifestyle modification was delivered by e-mail once a month for 10 months. In the KK, IGdemonstrated significantly decreased levels of fasting serum insulin (FSI) as compared toCG and homeostasis model of assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). In the KQ+QQIG group, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), FSI and HOMA-IR were significantly decreased, andshowed further reduction in the HOMA-IR than KQ+QQ CG. After analysis of covariance,K121Q did significantly influence the change of HbA1c in CG after appropriate adjustment. In a multivariate model, BMI change predicted HOMA-IR change (adjusted β = 0.801; P =0.022) in KK IG subjects with T2DM. ENPP1 K121Q did not influence the change in IR. However, individuals with T2DM carrying the K121 variant are very responsive to the effectof BMI reduction on HOMA-IR.

        40ㆍ50대 일부 남성근로자의 골감소증 및 골다공증 유병실태와 위험요인

        목적: 최근 국내에서도 골다공증과 관련된 생활양식의 규명에 관한 연구가 이루어지고 있으나, 아직까지 남성 골다공증에 대한 연구가 활발하게 이루어지지 않아 40, 50대 남성근로자를 대상으로 유병률을 파악하고, 골감소증 및 골다공증 관련 위험요인을 확인하고자 하였다. 방법: 원자력발전소에 근무하는 40, 50대 남성 근로자 2,073명을 대상으로 2004년 3월~7월 기간동안 생활습관을 파악하기 위하여 자기기입식 전산입력 방식으로 최종학력, 흡연여부, 음주여부, 신체활동 횟수를 조사하였고, 골밀도검사, 체성분검사(체지방률, 허리-엉덩이둘레비), 신체계측(신장, 체중)을 시행하였고, 골밀도 검사는 Osteosys사의 EXE-3000을 이용하여 종골부위를 측정하였고, 체지방률, 허리-엉덩이 둘레비는 Biospace사의 Inbody 3.0을 이용하여 측정하였다. 통계분석은 골감소증 및 골다공증의 관련요인을 분석하기 위해 다중로지스틱회귀분석을 시행하였다. 결과: 연구대상자의 골감소증 및 골다공증 유병률은 22.8%와 3.0%이었으며, 골감소증 및 골다공증의 관련요인으로는 연령이 증가할수록, 흡연자이거나 과거흡연자일 경우, 체질량지수가 25 kg/m^(2) 미만일 경우, 30분 이상 신체활동 횟수가 주 3회 미만일 경우가 유의한 연관성이 있었다. 결론: 성인 남성 40, 50대의 골감소증 및 골다공증의 유병률이 높은 편이었으며, 골감소증 및 골다공증으로 이환을 예방하기 위하여 금연, 활발한 신체활동을 촉진하여 골밀도를 개선시키는 생활습관으로의 변화를 권고해야 할 것이다. Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of osteopenia and osteoporosis in 40-59 year-old male workers working at nuclear power plants. Methods: Bone density, body composition, and anthropometry data were analyzed for 2,073 subjects were carried out from March 2004 to July, 2004. Educational level, smoking status, drinking status and frequency of physical activity were investigated by self-reported questionnaires through internet to identify lifestyles related to bone mass density. Bone mass density was measured by EXE-3000 of Osteosys Co. And body fat percentage, and waist-to-hip ratio by inbody 3.0 of Biospace Co. Results: The prevalence of ostepeniaosteopenia and osteoporosis was 22.8% and 3.0%, respectively. According to multinominal multinomial logistic regression analysis, age, smoking status (current smoker and former smoker), low body mass index (< 25kg/m^(2)), and frequency of physical activity were significantly associated with osteopenia and osteoporosis. Conclusions: The prevalence of ostcopenia and osteoporosis wasseemed high for the, when it was inferred from subjects' age compared to the results of previous studies. The This study results suggeststhat it is necessary for 40-59 year-old male workers to stop smoking, and exercise regularly in order to prevent osteopenia and osteoporosis.
