      • Staphylococcus aureus와 Coagulase-Negative Staphylococcus Species에 대한 Arbekacin의 시험관내 항균력

        Background : Most strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) now exhibit high-level resistance to various antibiotics, such as β -lactam antibiotics, aminoglycosides, macrolides, tetracyclines and quinolones. Recent reports describing the therapeutic failure of vancomycin for MRSA infections have arisen considerable concerns regarding the emergence of MRSA strains, which will require new therapeutic agents. Arbekacin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic, has antibacterial activity against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and is stable in the presence of aminoglycoside inactivating enzymes produced by S. aureus. In this study, we compared the antibacterial activity of arbekacin with those of vancomycin, gentamicin, and amikacin against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). Methods : For a collection of 549 S. aureus and 251 CNS isolates from three Catholic University Hospitals in Korea, minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of arbekacin, vancomycin, amikacin and gentamicin were determined by agar dilution method using Mueller-Hinton agar according to NCCLS (National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards, USA)criteria. Results : Among 549 S. aureus isolates, 278 isolates were MRSA and 271 isolates were methicil sensitive S. aureus (MSSA). MIC50 & MIC90 of arbekacin against 549 S. aureus were 0.5 & 1 ㎍/mL, and MIC50 & MIC90 of vancomycin were 1 & 1 ㎍/mL. MIC of arbekacin against 549 S. aureus isolates ranges from 0.03 to 4 ㎍/mL, and MIC of vancomycin against 549 S. aureus ranges from 0.25 to 2 ㎍/mL. MIC90 of amikacin against 549 S. aureus was 32㎍/mL, and that of gentamicin was 128 ㎍/mL. MICs of amikacin and gentamicin were variable, ranging from 0.125 to 256, and otherwise arbekacin and vancomycin revealed relatively narrow range of MICs. MIC90 of arbekacin against 278 MRSA isolates & 271 MSSA were 1 & 0.5 ㎍/mL, and those of vancomycin against MRSA & MSSA were 1 & 1 ㎍/mL. MIC90 of amikacin against 278 MRSA & 271 MSSA isolates were 32 & 4 ㎍/mL, and that of gentamicin against MRSA & MSSA isolates were 128 & 32 ㎍/mL respectively. Among 251 CNS isolates, 122 isolates were MRCNS and 129 were MSCNS. MICSO & MIC90 of arbekacin against 251 CNS isolates were 0.25 & 2 ㎍/mL, and those of vancomycin were 1 & 2 ㎍/mL. MIC of arbekacin against 251 CNS isolates ranges from 0.015 to 32 ㎍/mL, and that of vancomycin isolates ranges from 0.25 to 2 ㎍/mL, MIC90 of arbekacin against 122 MRCNS & 129 MSCNS isolates were 2&0.3 ㎍/ML, and those of vancomycin were 2&s ㎍/ML. MIC90 of amikacin against 251 CNS isolates was 32 ㎍/ML, and that of gentamicin was 128 ㎍/ML for CNS. MIC90 of amikacin against 122 MRCNS & 129 MSCNS isolates were 128 & 8㎍/mL, and those of gentamicin ere 256 & 32 ㎍/mL. Conclusion : Considering above results, arbekacin can be useful agent against most strains of MRSA and MRCMS, which exhibit high-level resistance to amikacin and gentamicin.       • Effect of Platelet Activating Factor on Cardiovascular System and Blood in Rabbit

        The platelet activating factor, i.e., 1-0-alkyl-2-acetyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, is a potent phospholipid mediator for a variety physiologic alteration in vivo. This study was performed to clarify the effects of platelet activating factor or its derivative on cardiovascular system and blood in rabbits, especially the alterations of blood pressure, heart rate, serum electrolyte (Na, K), platelet and leukocyte level in blood depend on their chemical structure, dose and time course. The results obtained were as follows: 1. In intravenously-injected PAP group, blood pressure and heart rate were immediately decreased and recovered to the prechallenge level 60 minutes after injection. 2. Both leukocyte and platelet counts were decreased very rapidly and profoundly within 1 minute after PAF infusion. By 20 minutes, the leukocytes in experimental rabbits had returned to a 70% of prechallenge levels. By 60 minutes, the platelet had returned to a 70% of prechallenge levels. 3. The reduction in the all types of blood leukocytes except eosinophils was showed within 1 minute after challenge. The marked reduction in circulating levels of neutrophils and basophils was occured and lymphocytes showed little change during the experimental period. 4. No significant effect of the platelet activating factor on serum electrolyte (Na, K) was found. Between the hypotension, bradycardia and serum electrolyte (Na, K), no correlation was found in this study. 5. In the case of injection below lethal dose of platelet activating factor, there was no difference depend on the dosage of injection, all reactions were reversible. 6. The effect of cardiovascular system and blood on platelet actvating factor differed greatly according to the chemical structure and Lyso-platelet activating factor showed no biological activity. This study demonstrated that platelet activating factor responded to biological activity on cardiovascular system and blood. And the response was reversible and affected by the chemical structure.

      • Silicon-Based Yagi-Uda Antenna Reflector

        A silicon-based “plasma antenna” has attracted substantial attentions due to the semiconductor’s natural ability to reconfigure itself from a metal state to an insulator state, and vice versa. The silicon enables the plasma antenna to operate as a highly practicable and low-cost reconfigurable antenna because the external electromagnetic field is coupled with an electron-crowded plasma channel. Given these characteristics, it was found that the silicon-based plasma channel is capable of becoming a reconfigurable reflector which redirects electromagnetic energy by reflecting an incoming signal back toward its original direction. In this work, the performance of a silicon-based reflector mounted on a Yagi-Uda antenna is presented. A numerical simulation is carried out to demonstrate the feasibility of the antenna as a plasma channel, prior to its fabrication. The I-V characteristics of the fabricated device are consequently shown, and finally the maximum gain along with its beam pattern is demonstrated.

      • H.264/AVC baseline profile to MPEG-4 visual simple profile transcoding to reduce the spatial resolution

        <P>In this study, we propose a heterogeneous transcoding method of converting an H.264/Advanced video coding (AVC) Baseline profile (BP) video bitstream into an MPEG-4 Visual simple profile (VSP) video bitstream. The proposed method reduces the spatial resolution for mobile terminals, which support only low resolution video bitstreams. When the H.264/AVC BP video bitstream is transformed into the MPEG-4 VSP video bitstream, the conversions between the H.264/AVC BP block types and the MPEG-4 VSP block types are performed by analyzing the macroblocks (MBs) conversion probability and calculating the difference values of motion vector. The proposed transcoding method runs on average 5.5 times faster than the cascaded transcoding methods, for a degradation of the PSNR (peak-signal-to ratio) of less than 0.5 dB. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.         공천제도와 입법생산성 간의 관계에 대한 실증분석: 17대 국회입법자료를 중심으로

        본 연구는 공천방식과 입법생산성 간의 관계를 파악하고자 하는 시도이다. 상향식 공천방식이 제한적으로 시행된 17대 국회의 입법자료를 이용하여, 공천방식이 국회의원의 법안발의행동과 타정당의원의 부서행위에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지, 그 결과 발의된 법안이 본회의에서 가결될 가능성에 어떠한 영향을 주는지를 살펴본다. 더 나아가 발의법안과 가결법안으로 측정된 국회의원의 성과가 재선에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 분석한다. 그리고 이러한 실증분석을 바탕으로 한국정치의 생산성을 제고하기 위해서 국회의원선거를 포함한 모든 선거에서 상향식 공천제도의 도입, 국회의원선거와 지방선거의 주기 동조화, 그리고 정치자금관련법의 개정이 필요함을 주장한다. We study the relationship between parties` candidate selection processes and legislative productivity. Utilizing the legislation data of the 17th National Assembly for which some of candidates were selected by the bottom-up selection process, we try to shed some light on how candidate selection methods affect what bills to propose, other party member`s countersignature, and the possibility that a bill passes on the floor. Furthermore, we examine how a legislator`s performance, especially the number of proposed bills and passed bills influences his/her chance of reelection. Anchored on our empirical analysis, we argue that it is desirable to adopt bottom-up candidate selection in all the levels of elections, hold National Assembly election and local elections in the same year, and revise campaign finance-related acts to enhance the legislative productivity.

        This paper is purposed to examine whether and how government interventions in the loan market can resolve a market failure caused by information asymmetry. In reality, the government takes various corrective measures in order to alleviate distortions in loan allocation. Dividing them into three canonical types (subsidization of funding cost (indirect lending), provision of public payment guarantee and that of direct lending), our paper compares those ways of government intervention in enhancing efficiency based on a partial equilibrium model.

        Weight Control Methods Related to Cotinine-Verified Smoking among Korean Adult Women: Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2008–2011

        Ba ckground: Korean women are known to have a very low smoking rate. However, the actual smoking rateamong Korean women is higher than 10% and may continue to increase gradually. In addition, some Koreanwomen use extreme weight control methods that have potentially harmful effects. This study was conductedto elucidate weight control methods related to cotinine-verified smoking among Korean adult women. Me thods: This cross-sectional study involved 4,189 women aged ≥19 years who had attempted weightcontrol during the past 1 year from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey,2008–2011. Smoking status was assessed using both self-report questionnaires and assays of urinarycotinine, and weight control methods were investigated using self-report questionnaires. Re sults: The smoking rate based on the measurement of urinary cotinine was 12.4% ± 0.8% amongKorean women. Cotinine-verified smokers were more likely to attempt fasting (odds ratio, 2.19; 95%confidence intervals, 1.03 to 4.67), taking prescription diet-pills (odds ratio, 2.37; 95% confidenceintervals, 1.47 to 3.82), and taking nonprescription diet-pills (odds ratio, 3.46; 95% confidenceintervals, 1.71 to 6.98), and were less likely to attempt eating less food or modifying dietary patterns(odds ratio, 0.71; 95% confidence intervals, 0.51 to 0.99) compared to non-smokers. Co nclusion: Korean adult women’s smoking is independently related to a high likelihood of usingweight control methods with potentially harmful effects, such as fasting and taking diet-pills, anda low likelihood of choosing weight control methods, including dietary modification, that requireconstant effort for a prolonged time.
