      • Serum Progesterone, Estradiol-17β, and Prolactin Levels in Hydatidiform Moles

Lee, Myung Woo,Chung, Koo Yoon,Lee, Hun Young,Kim, Seung Jo CATHOLIC MEDICAL CENTER 1980 Bulletin of the Clinical Research Institute Vol.8 No.1

Serum progesterone, estradiol-17β, and prolactin levels in the 25 hydatidiform mole patients who registered at Trophoblastic Disease Clinic in Catholic Medical Center form June, 1978 to December, 1979 were measured by radioimmunoassay serum progesterone, estradiol-17β and prolactin during the clinical course of treatment. The level of these three hormones of normal pregnancies increased according to increasing gestational weeks and these of hydatidiform mole revealed irregular levels during the experiment. The level of these three hormones were high in the group of complete molar change of placenta with theca lutein cyst and high 24 hours-urinary hCG titer.

      • Clinical Experience in 200 Renal Transplants at Catholic Medical Center

Park, Yong Hyun,Whang, Tae Gon,Lee, Yong Kak,Yoon, Young Suk,Yoon, Moon Soo,Bang, Byung Kee,Shin, Kyung Sub,Koh, Yong Bock,Kim, Sung Nyeun CATHOLIC MEDICAL CENTER 1986 Bulletin of the Clinical Research Institute Vol.14 No.1

Between March, 1969, and April, 1986, two hundred of renal allograft recipients were treated with either cyclosporine (CsA)+prednisone (n=53) or azathioprine (Aza)+prednisone (n=147). On October 31,1986, the actuarial patient survival rate at two years was 75% for all patient group. The corresponding graft survival rate at two years was 68% for all patients. The actuarial patient survival rate at two years was 71% in the Aza group, and 94% in the CsA group including recipients converted from CsA to Aza (3 cases), which was statistically significant (P<.001), and the corresponding graft survival rate was 65% and 80%: the difference was not statistically significant. In the CsA-treated group, excluding converter from CsA to Aza (3 cases), however, the graft survival rate at two years was 91%, which was statistically significant (p = .0056). There was no significant difference of graft survivial rate between the recipients who received DST vs non-DST in CsA-treated group. It was difficult to evaluate the recipients who were given DST due to a small number of cases and short follow-up period. In either, the Aza- or the CsA-treated group, the graft survival retes were higher in HLA identical LRD group than in either haplo-identical or mismatched LRD group. Total of 63 patients, who received kidney transplantation expired. The most frequent cause of death in 17.5% of cases was uremia per se due to graft failure, followed by infection (14.7%), vascular (14.3%), and cardiac (11.1%). The most commonly encountered posttransplant complications in order of frequency were as follows: erythrocytosis (18.0%), pneumonia (15.0%), urinary tract infections (14.0%), herpetic infections (12.0%), fungal infection (11.5%), posttransplant diabetes (8.5%), technical (5.0%) and others.

      • Validation of a Korean Version of the COOP-WONCA Charts in Primary Care

Shin, Ho Cheol,Choi, Whan Seok CATHOLIC MEDICAL CENTER 1996 Bulletin of the Clinical Research Institute Vol.24 No.2

The COOP-WONCA charts is designed to measure 6 dimensions of health in clinical and general population setting. The main purpose of this study was to examine the validity, reliability, and clinical usefulness of the Korean version of this instrument in primary care. Data were obtained from 173 consecutive patients aged 18 years and over, visiting the Family Practice Center(FPC), St. Mary's Hospital, Seoul. Among them 33 patients visited FPC for health maintenance and remained 140 patients for acute or chronic medical problems. In order to examine reliability and sensitivity to change, both groups were followed up two weeks later. Regarding acceptability, 87.8% of patients accepted the charts were easy to understand and 90.5% of patients could completed questionnaires in 5 minutes. Overall distributions of scores demonstrated resonable variation. Regarding construct validity, differences between patients for health maintenance and patients with medical problems were all in the anticipated direction and reached statistical significance for three of the six charts. Moderate convergent and discriminant validity were demonstrated by score correlations between the COOP-WONCA charts and the Duke Health Profile. For temporal stability, the six charts test-retest correlations ranged from 0.32 to 0.62 and exceeded 0.50 for all charts except overall health. For sensitivity to change tested in patients with medical problems, the mean change of scores for all six charts indicated improvement in health and reached statistical significance for three of the six charts. There were also larger changes for patients with acute problems than for those with chronic problems. In patients with acute problems, effect size for change in health measure was large(1.13). And effect size were all at least small to moderate with the exception of social activities. From the reseults of this study the Korean version of the COOP-WONCA charts is presented as a brief, clinically useful, and valid instrument for measuring functional health in ambulatory primary care settings in Korea.

      • Renal Transplantation, Catholic Medical Center : Reporton 25 Cases

Lee, Chong Hoon,Chung, Woon Hyok,Koh, Yong Bok,Lee, Yong Kak,Min, Byong Sok,Lim, Soo Kil CATHOLIC MEDICAL CENTER 1976 Bulletin of the Clinical Research Institute Vol.4 No.1

In order to evaluate the etiological correlation between acute and chronic active liver diseases, and primary hepatocellular carcinoma, sera from 417 patients with biopsyproven various liver diseases were examined for hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg) by solid phase double-antibody radioimmunoassay(RIA) technique(1). Among 417 patients, 315 cases were composed of acute viral hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and primary hepatocellular carcinoma and 72 cases with miscellaneous liver idseases unrelated to acute of chronic hepatitis. Remaining 30 cases showed the histologic features of normal or nonspecific reactive hepatitis.

      • Induction of DNCB Oral Tolerance in Mice

Department of Dermatology, Catholic University Medical College,Kang, Sung Bum,Lee, Jun Young CATHOLIC MEDICAL CENTER 1986 Bulletin of the Clinical Research Institute Vol.14 No.1

Tolerance to contact hypersensitivity was induced by feeding of different DNCB doses in mice. A total of 40 mice were divided into 4 groups (control group, 6 ㎎ feeding group, 10 ㎎ feeding group, 14 ㎎ feeding group) in experiment 1. Degree of tolerance to contact hypersensitivity was measured by increment rate? of ear swelling after challenge with DNFB. Experiment 2 was performed in the same method of experiment 1 with addition of 3 ㎎ DNCB feeding group. The increment rates were significantly decreased in DNCB feeding groups in experiment 1 and 2(P<0.01). But there were no differences statistically between increment rates of DNCB feeding groups.

      • The Influence of Growth Upon Angular Deformity of Rat's Tibia

Woo, Young Kyun,Moon, Myung Sang CATHOLIC MEDICAL CENTER 1975 Bulletin of the Clinical Research Institute Vol.3 No.1

The angular deformities of tibia which developed after experimentally induced fracture in 15 rats were followed up by regular X-ray studies of 2 to 3 weeks intervals to estimate the spontaneous correctability of the deformity by growth. Also contribution of proximal and distal tibia growth plates to longitudinal growth were extimated by same technique through this study and following data were obtained. 1. The longitudinal growth of tubular bones of rat was ceased about 11 weeks of age by the spontaneous closure of the epiphyseal plate on X-ray at this periods. 2. The iatrogenically induced angular deformity was spontaneously corrected about 45% of its total deformity during 4 to 11 weeks of age, and maximum correction was obtained during 1-3 weeks after fracture. During this periods, 62.3% of total correction was obtained. 3. The posterior angulation was better corrected than anterior one. 4. The maximum tibial growth was occured in 4-6 weeks of age and about 77.5% of total tibial length was due to the growth of the proximal epiphyseal plate. 5. The daily growth of tibia during 4-6 weeks of age was 0.02㎜/day, 0.14㎜/day in 6-8 weeks and 0.09㎜/day in 8-11 weeks. ◁표 삽입▷ (원본을 참조하세요)

      • Chemotaxis of T Lymphocyte by Recombinant Interleukin-2

Kim, Ho Youn,Park, Suk Young,Kim, Boo Sung CATHOLIC MEDICAL CENTER 1990 Bulletin of the Clinical Research Institute Vol.18 No.2

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) have been shown to exert a variety of effects on T cells including the ability to trigger proliferation and to act as chemoattactant. We have studied the subpopulations of human T cells involved in their chemotactic response to this cytokine. Human peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes were separated by Ficoll-Hypaque gradient centrifugation. T cells were purified by double sheep erythrocyte resetting. Migration of human peripheral blood T cel1s was measured in microchemotaxis chamber equipped with membrane filters haying 8 micron diameter pores. Recombinant IL-2 stimulated migration of resting or activated (phytohemagglutinin induced) T cells at concentration of 10^-2 to 10^2 unit/ml. Chemotaxis of T cells to IL-2 was confirmed by checkerboard analysis. Double immunofluorescent staining and Flow cytometer study of nonmigrating T cells demonstrated that IL-2 caused mainly Leu 3^+ cells to chemotaxis. This study extends previous observations that IL-2 is T cell chemoattractants and demonstrates selectivity with respect to the T cell subsets that migrate in response to this cytokine.

      • Effect of Hypothermic Anesthesia on Mucus Secreting Cells of Respiratory Tract in Dogs

Chin, Su Nam,Chung, Woon Hyok CATHOLIC MEDICAL CENTER 1975 Bulletin of the Clinical Research Institute Vol.3 No.1

Under hypothermic state of the dog, halothane vapor elicited weaker stimuli on the mucus secreting cells of the respiratory mucosa than ether vapor did. Also during the rewarming period, halothane caused the recovery of secretory action of mucus cells of the trachea quicker than the ether anesthesia did. And it was suggested that the decrease of PAS reaction and of alcianophilia under hypothermic anesthesia was caused by the result of the decreased metabolism of mucus secreting cells due to lowered temperature or by the do creased response of the cells to the anesthetic agents.
