Objectives : The aim of this study was to examine the behavioral and emotional problems associated with nocturnal enuresis in Korean children. Methods : Three hundred eighteen children with nocturnal enuresis, together with their parents, completed the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL), Disruptive Behavior Disorder Scale according to DSM-IV (DBDS), Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC), and Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale (PHCSC). Ninety-three normal students were selected as the control group. Results : Compared to the normal control group, the mean scores with regard to the withdrawn, social problems, attention problems, delinquent behavior, aggressive behavior, externalizing problems and total problems profiles were significantly higher in the nocturnal enuresis group according to the CBCL results. The nocturnal enuresis group also scored significantly higher in the ADHD and ODD profiles of the DBDS. The nocturnal enuresis group was more depressed and anxious than the control group according to the results of the CDI and STAI. The mean score of the PHCSC was significantly lower in the nocturnal enuresis group when compared to the normal control group. Conclusion : The results of this study suggest that children with nocturnal enuresis in Korea have clinically relevant behavioral and emotional problems. The findings support the link between nocturnal enuresis and psychopathology in Korean children.

<P>We report on the signal monitoring characteristics in a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) transistor outline can with a monitor-photodiode, thermoelectric cooler, and thermistor. Because of spatial hole-burning in the RSOA cavity, a front-side signal-monitoring module exhibits wider windows and better linearity in monitor current to signal power ratio (MCSPR) than a rear-side signal-monitoring module for current variations. In C-band, the average of the MCSPR is about 0.150 A/W and the MCSPR variation on wavelength is about ±0.038 A/W.</P>

20cases of tibial fracture were treated with new tibial Brooker interlocking nail system from Apr.1990. to Mar. 1991. The Brooker tibial nail is suited for both reamed and unreamed application. Obviously, the blood supply is injured with any nail insertion, but because of its unique square design, significant cross-sectional areas are left open to permit rapid reestablishment of the intramedullary circulation. As for using the Brooker nalis for fractures of distal 1/3 of the tibia, 2 fins prevent rotation while providing optimal fracture stabilization. Additionally, the nail provides strang 2 fins for distal fixation, and the danger of radiational damage is decreased due to less O,R. time. 13 of 20 cases were followed up more than I year. The time for radiological union was. average 16weeks without rotational deformity or nonunion. Of the patients with 20 cases, one had a proximal screw breakage; one, mild knee joint pain; and one, distal fin protrusion.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to provide information on the actual status and prevailing trend of prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism (VTE) following total knee arthroplasty (TKA) in South Korea. Materials and Methods: The Korean Knee Society (KKS) developed a questionnaire with 6 clinical questions on VTE. The questionnaire was distributed to all members of KKS by both postal and online mail. Participants were asked to supply details on their specialty and to select methods of prophylaxis they employ. Of the total members of KKS, 27.9% participated in the survey. Results: The percentage of surgeons who routinely performed prophylaxis for VTE was 60.4%; 19.4% performed prophylaxis depending on the patient’s health condition; and the remaining 20.2% never implemented prophylaxis after surgery. The common prophylactic methods among the responders were compression stocking (72.9%), pneumatic leg compression (63.3%), perioral direct factor Xa inhibitor (46.9%), and low-molecularweight heparin (39.5%). For the respondents who did not perform prophylaxis, the main reason (51.5%) was the low risk of postoperative VTE considering the low incidences in Asians. Conclusions: The present study involving members of the KKS will help to comprehend the actual status of VTE prevention in South Korea. The results of this study may be useful to design VTE guidelines appropriate for Koreans in the future.

It has been suggested that nitric oxide (NO) derived from inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) may act as a mediator of cytokine-induced effects on bone turn-over. NO is also recognized as an important factor in bone remodeling, i.e., participating in osteoblast apoptosis in an arthritic joint. The components of Agastache rugosa are known to have many pharmacological activities. In the present study, we investigated the effects of Agastache rugosa leaf extract (ELAR) on NO production and the iNOS expression in ROS 17/2.8 cells activated by a mixture of inflammatory cytokines including TNF-α and IL-1β. A preincubation with ELAR significantly and concentration-dependently reduced the expression of iNOS protein in ROS 17/2.8 cells activated with the cytokine mixture. Consequently, the NO production was also significantly reduced by ELAR with an IC50 of 0.75 mg/mL. The inhibitory mechanism of iNOS induction by ELAR prevented the activation and translocation of NF-κB (p65) to the nucleus from the cytosol fraction. Furthermore, ELAR concentration-dependently reduced the cellular toxicity induced by sodium nitroprusside, an NO-donor. These results suggest that ELAR may be beneficial in NO-mediated inflammatory conditions such as osteoporosis.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Activation of the NF-κB and mitogen activated protein (MAP) kinases plays an important role in the expression of inflammatory genes such as adhesion molecules. Although compound C is known as an AMPK inhibitor, AMPK-independent action of it has been recognized. Effects on the expression of ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 by compound C were investigated in TNF-α-activated human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) <I>in vitro</I> and in thoracic aorta of rats treated with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) <I>in vivo</I>. Compound C inhibited ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 expression at the transcriptional as well as translational level in TNF-α-activated HUVECs. In both DN-AMPK- and AMPKα<SUB>1</SUB>-siRNA-transfected HUVECs, compound C still inhibited TNF-α-induced VCAM-1 and ICAM-1 expression, indicating that this is AMPK-independent action. Interestingly, compound C significantly inhibited NF-κB activity and translocation of p65 to nucleus in HUVECs when activated with TNF-α. Importantly, administration of compound C (0.2mg/kg) significantly reduced expression of both ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 in LPS-treated rat thoracic aortas. In addition, compound C significantly inhibited iNOS and production of NO in both TNF-α- and LPS-activated RAW 264.7 cells. Finally, compound C significantly inhibited phosphorylation of Akt and p-38MAPK but not protein kinase c or ERK1/2 in HUVECs. Taken together, we conclude that adhesion molecules (ICAM-1, VCAM-1) are to be the novel targets of compound C in preventing inflammatory insult to endothelial cells independent of AMPK inhibition via inhibition of NF-κB activity along with inhibition of phosphorylation of PI3K and P38 MAPK.</P>
