The purpose of this study was to determined the newspaper's role, reporting rule, competition, control and thought by the ideological for modernization and enlighting national interest during in the late nineteenth century Korea, or the last years of the Choson Dynasty. In this study, I tried, in the first stage to described the defines of word meaning for GaeHwa(new wave of reform and western modernization) of the contents of editorial accounts on newspapers in the Gae-Hwa era. In the second stage was to descrided the contents of journalism views on newspapers as projected newspaper's role, aims, functions, editorial activity, reporter's role, rule, social ethics, competition between with another newspapers and ideolgical orientation for modernization. For this study, therefore, the investigator has devided into three steps. The first step, represented by Hansong Sunbo and Hansong Joobo, published every 10 days, a weekly, featured a bulletin-like reporting function of newspapers; the second step, a wester press-like enlightement function, represented by the two dailies-the Tongnip Shinmun(The Independent) and Maeil Shinmun; and the third step, a resistance function, represented by such dailies as the Hwangsong Shinmun and Daekuk Shinmun. As the result of this study, this investigater found in the significant contribution of these newspapers to Korean journalism history, theoies and press ideology. (1) the first step did an important role for enlighting and national interest with impact to the king and governmental officials. (2) the second step contributed to making common people to radical re form through the newspapers and relationship of more or less equal partnership was evident in the relationship between Korean and Chinese etc. which committed themselves to the reistance against traditional domination of Orient. (3) the third step fulfilled its function as the spiritual supporter of people in the votex of that period was contributed to Korean national interests and recovery of Korean sovereignty, through couraageous and sharp critism against Korean government's incompetence and foreign nations exploitation. In general, the editorial tone of these newspapers was much more moderate than that of the second step. If not so radical and conspicuos as the Tongnip, Maeil Shinmun in its editorial crusades, the paper had clear and firm objectives of its own.

The HWANGSUNG daily newspaper was born September 5, 1898. On March 2, the same year, Chi Ho Yun found the KYUNGSUNG Shinmun as a weekly. It was made a daily by Og Namgoong, and Gun Yu, members of Independent Club. These members of the HWANGSUNG Shinmum were eminent Chinesestylist. The cabinet members were urged adopt a "govern-by-law" policy ; the editors were predictiong that the absence of a law-abiding administration would only inivite interference from foreign powers. In general, the editorial tone of the HWANGSUNG Shinmun was much more moderate than that of the Independent. The editorials, fresh and graceful as they were teachings of Confucianism. By the Korean journalism reached its boom stage, Japanese cencership had begun. The HWANGSUNG Shinmun zigzagged for a while until it was finally bought by the Japanese in September 15, 1910. The purpose of this paper was to examined the perspectives on modern newspapers in the Korean and American journalism history. This study was to search for historical perspectives and historical perspective of journalism by the historians. Comment to most historical of the press are certain hallowed themes: the heroic struggle against state control of the press. In recently, a number of schools of interpretation have given preeminance to political and social issues and attitudes in explaining mass communication history. Historians write from particular points of view. These point of view are called "perspectives", and historians' explanatory frameworks that result from these perspectives can be referred to as "Interpretation." One of the most important reasons in that new perspectives arise with new generations. Changing interpretations of media history also have resulted periodically from changes within history profession. Generally speaking, historian have written from three categories of perspectives: ideological, professional, and cultural. In result, perspectives on mass communication has been inadequate types of sources, involved primarily in the conceptual approach to history, in the actual practice of researching history and so on.

        日帝下 新聞의 新聞論에 관한 考察

鄭大澈 한양대학교 한국학연구소 1987 韓國學論集 Vol.11 No.-

I have written this study was to determined the newspper's role, control and thought by the ideological for national independent during in the yoke of Japanese Imperialism. In this study, I tried to described the contents of Journalism views on newspaper's as projected newspaper's role, aims, function and editorial activities. For this study, therfore, the investgator has the four private newspapers the sitai ilpo(the corea times), the choong-oiibo, the choong- ang ilbo, the chosum choong-ang ilbo(The Korea Central Daily News) was nationalistic, anti-Japanese newspapers under the rule of the Japanese colonial policy. I have done with the historial background of the 1920's and the 1930's during which the four newspapers existed. The government general decided to apply the Peace Maintenance Law to the Korean people, putting it into effect in Korea on May 12, 1925. At the same time, the oppression and interference of the censorship authorities grew more serve every day. Again, the Newspaper Law con- trolled not only the private newspapers but all Korean-language periodicals. with regard to the requirements desired in connection with editing, tone and color was faithful to the aggressive policy of Japanese imperialism. In short, the newspaper functioned primarily as an instrunment of a small nucleus of nationalistic ideologists trying to bring about internal reforms and national solidarity in the face of Jappanese imperialism.
