Presented is a fast image search algorithm that can significantly reduce similarity calculation compared to a full comparison of every database image. For fast searches a tree is constructed by successfully dividing nodes into the desired depth level by working from the root to the leaf nodes using the k-means algorithm. When the query is completed, we traverse the tree top-down by minimizing the route taken between the query image and node controid until we meet the undivided nodes. Within undivided nodes, the algorithm of triangle inequality is used to find the images most similar to the query.

The flora and vegetation of Ui-do were investigated two times from July 23th to July 29th in 1985, and from July 8th to July 15th in 1985. The vascular plants identified in these investigations were 102 families, 302 genera, 376 species, 58 varieties and 4 formae, summing up to 438 species total. Of these species, 126 species were found commonly in the lists reported previously by Lee, etc. (1980) and Lee (1981). The total number of species in this island was thus summerized as 104 families, 323 genera and 481 species. Also Fisher's index was calculated as 426.4. This value was higher than that of Hong-do. By the ZM school method, the vegetaion of Ui-do was classified into 15 community types, i.e. the evergreen broad-leaved forests(Camellia japonica-Machilus thunbergii, Camellia japonica-Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii, Camellia japonica community), the evergreen needle-leaved forests (Pinus thunbergii community), the deciduous forests (Mallotus japonicus, Carpinus coreana community), Pseudosasa japonica community, the grassland vegetation (Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens, Arundinella hirta-Zoysia japonica, pennisetum alopecuroides-Artemisia princeps var. orientalis, Agrostis clavata-Artemisia princeps var. orientalis community), the sand dune vegetation (Carex pumila, Imperata cylindrica var. koengii-Vitex rotundifolia, Ligustrvm quihoui var. latifolium community) and the grazing land. Each community was described in term of floristic, structual and environmental features. The synthesis table and the actual vegetaion map were prepared.

Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.
Primary Extraskeletal Mesenchymal Chondrosarcoma Arising from the Pancreas

We report here on a case of primary extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma that arose from the pancreas. A 41-year-old man was evaluated by CT to find the cause of his abdominal pain. The CT scans showed a heterogeneously enhancing necrotic mass with numerous areas of coarse calcification, and this was located in the left side of the retroperitoneal space and involved the body and tail of the pancreas. Portal venography via the celiac axis also showed invasion of the splenic vein. Following excision of the mass, it was pathologically confirmed to be primary extraskeletal mesenchymal chondrosarcoma that arose from the pancreas.

A cycle analysis was achieved to predict the characteristics by comprehensive modeling and simulation of an air-cooled, double-effect absorption system using a new $H_2O/LiBr+HO(CH_2)_3OH$ solution. The simulation results showed that the new working fluid may provide the crystallization limit 8% higher than the conventional $H_2O/LiBr$ solution. With a crystallization margin of 3wt%(weight%), the optimal solution distribution ratio was found in the range of 36 to 40%. Variation of cooling air Inlet temperature has a sensitive effect on the cooling COP and corrosion problem. The simulation of heat exchangers with UA value revealed that the absorber and the evaporator are relatively important for an air-cooled system compared with the condenser and the low temperature generator. The effect of cooling air flow rate, circulation weak solution flow rate and chilled water inlet temperature were also examined. The new working fluid may provide the COP approximately 5% higher than the conventional $H_2O/LiBr$ solution.
Alcaligenes latus 에 의한 PHB 의 생합성에 관한 연구

본 논문은 Alcaligenes latus DSM 1123 균주의 최적 증식조건 및 PHB 생합성을 위한 효과적인 배양방법에 관한 연구이다. 최적 균증식 조건에 대한 실험은 진탕배양기를 이용하였으며, 얻어진 최적 조건 하에서 2.5L 용량의 호기성 배양 장치를 사용하여 회분식 배양과 pH 조절 용액을 달리한 유가식 배양을 행하였다. 배양에 있어 탄소원 및 질소원은 각각 저가의 탄소원인 sucrose및 (NH₄)₂SO₄를 사용한 경우가 가장 효율적이었다. 최적의 C/N비는 탄소원 및 질소원 농도에 비례하여 증가하였으며, sucrose농도 30g/L일 경우 C/N비 30에서 최대의 비증식속도를 보였다. Yeast extract 0.5 g/L와 polypeptone 1.0 g/L를 배지 중에 첨가한 결과 지연시간의 감소 및 2배 이상의 비증식 속도 향상을 보였다. 또 A. latus는 A. eutrophus와 달리 균증식기에도 PHB를 합성하였다. 초기에는 NH₄OH용액을, 균증식기 중반부터는 NaOH용액을 이용하여 2단 유가식 배양을 하였을 경우가 NH₄OH 용액과 NaOH 용액을 각각 이용하여 pH를 조절한 경우에 비하여 비증식속도와 균체량 및 PHB 축적량이 증가하였으며, 이때의 최종균체량, PHB 합성량 및 최종 균체량에 대한 PHB 축적률은 각각 17.6 g/L, 8.04 g/L 및 46%이었다. Culture conditions for the optimum growth and biosynthesis of PHB in Alcaligenes latus DSM 1123 were investigated. Optimum carbon and nitrogen sources and their concentrations for growth were determined, and batch and fed-batch fermentations were performed in a 2.5 L jar type aerobic fermenter with various pH control solutions. Sucrose and (NH₄)₂SO₄ were found to be the most effective carbon and nitrogen sources for the growth of A. latus, respectively. Optimum C/N ratio was found to be varied with the concentrations of carbon and nitrogen sources. The maximum specific growth rate was obtained at the sucrose concentration of 30 g/L and C/N ratio of 30. The specific growth rate increased more than two times and lag time was reduced when yeast extract and polypeptone were added. PHB could be synthesized in the logarithmic growth phase. By using NH₄OH and NaOH solutions in the first and second stage as pH control solution, significant increases in the specific growth rate, biomass and PHB concentrations were observed. Under the optimal conditions, the maximum biomass and PHB accumulation yield(Y_(P/X) attained after 40 hours were 17.6 g/L and 46 %, respectively.
A Case of Rosai-Dorfman Disease with Chronic Skin Ulceration as a Cutaneous Symptom

Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), also known as sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, is a rare histiocytic disorder characterized by lymph node invasion and extranodal symptoms. The number of patients reported heretofore is less than 1,000, and it shows a predilection to certain groups: younger age, African race, and male sex. Herein, we report a middle-aged Asian female who presented to us with a single inflamed skin nodule on her left cheek, which finally concluded as an extranodal symptom of RDD. At first, the skin lesion was believed to be an inflamed epidermal cyst. Though excision was performed, it recurred as a chronic skin ulcer. As the lesion did not heal well despite 3 months of repetitive dressings, wide excision and curettage were performed. Immunohistochemistry study of the excised specimen diagnosed RDD. Six months after the last excision, there was no recurrence or complications. This report offers the possibility of RDD in patients showing chronic skin ulcers being accompanied by lymphadenopathy, and also suggests a surgical excision as a preferred option in skin manifestation of RDD.
