Background : In recent years, gonorrhea has been panedemic and remains one of the most commom STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. Objective & Methods: For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of PPNG, we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the VD Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by means of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. Results: In 1996, 139 strains of N. gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 53(39.0%) were PPNG. Conclusion: Our results suggests that after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, the prevalence of PPNG in Seoul is gradually declining.

1969年 1月부터 1978年 12月까지 滿 10年間 慶北大學敎 醫料大學 病理學敎室 및 大邱東山基督病院 病理科에서 組織學的으로 診斷된 滿 15歲 以下의 幼小兒腫瘍 491例를 對象으로 統計的으로 比較檢索한 結果를 要約하면 다음과 같다. 總 491例中 良性腫瘍이 305例(62.1%), 惡性은 186例(37.9%)였으며 惡性의 62.4%가 男子에서 發生하였다. 良性腫瘍은 主로 6歲 以上에서 觀察되었으나, 惡性에서는 약 半數가 5歲 以下에 分布하고 있었으며 惡性腫瘍의 13例(7.0%)는 1歲 미만의 영아에서 나타났다. 良性腫瘍에서 흔한 型은 毛細血管腫, 水滑液囊腫(cystic hygroma), 扁平上皮乳頭腫 順이었으며 惡性은 鋼膜芽細胞腫, 惡性淋巴腫 그리고 胎生癌의 順으로 頻發하였다. 小兒에서 稀有한 堅細胞癌, 甲狀腺乳頭狀癌, 耳下腺細胞癌을 各各 1例씩 觀察한 것은 特記할만한 것으로서 이들 腫瘍의 發生機轉을 說明하는데 參考되어야 할 것으로 생각된다. A statistical study was carried out on 491 cases of infants and children with tumors, diagnosed by surgical biopsy at department of pathology, Kyungpook, National University, School of Medicine and pathologic department of Daegu Presbyterian Medical Center during the period of 10 wears, from January 1969 through December 1978. The results were as follows; Cut of 491 cases, 305 (62.1%) were benign and 186 (37.8%) were malignant tumors. Male were more affected the female (62.4%) of malignant tumor, showing male to female ratio 1.7:1. Most of the benign tumors were diagnosed above 6 years of age. In malignant tumors, 45% occured below 5 years of age and 7% were under 1 year of age. In benign tumors, capillary hemangioma was in highest frequency and cystic hygroma, squamous papilloma were in next order. Among malignant tumors, retinoblastoma, malignant lymphoma and embryonic carcinoma were in order of frequency. Author observed 1 case in each of renal cell carcinoma, papillary carcinoma of thyroid gland and acinic cell carcinoma of salivary gland which could be a good reference to suggest the pathogenesis of these tumors.

Many of the growth-promoting properties of growth hormone(GH) are mediated by insulin-like growth factor-I(IGF-I), a highly conserved circulating 70-amino acid peptide. Recent studies have shown that multiple mechanisms influence IGF-I gene expression, including transcription from two promoters, alternative RNA splicing, and variable polyadenylation. In thyroid tissue, thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH) and IGF-I are the most possible candidates for follicular cell proliferation and hypertrophy. Actually IGF-I had autocrine and paracrine effect for tissue growing. We prepared thyroid tumor tissue mRNAs using single step method for detecting IGF-I levels according to different tissues, i.e., thyroid adenoma or papillary thyroid carcinoma. We used Northern blot analysis for IGF-I mRNA and RNase protection assay (RPA) for IGF-I transcription start sites. For Northern blot, we used whole human IGF-I cDNA as a DNA probe and for RPA, we used IGF-I exon 1 containing noncoding promoter 1 as a riboprobe. We got good RNA bands from Northern blot analysis around 1 kb (IGF-IA) and 7.5 kb (IGF-IB) region. To clarify the amount of both IGF-IA and IB mRNAs, we measured autoradiographied signal of IGF-I mRNAs bands using densitometer. In IGF-IA signals, there's no change among liver and thyroid tissues, but in case of IGF-IB mRNA bands, the signal was markedly increased in thyroid carcinoma tissues than that of normal thyroid tissue (85% vs 14%). In the study of RPA, all thyroid tissues used the same transcription start sites as those of liver's. We concluded that that this different regulation of IGF-I mRNA was originated from tissue specificity. That meant some tissue specific transcription factor/s were related to tissue IGF-I expression.

The purpose of this study was to determined the effects of flow rates on breakthrough in charcoal tubes. Firstly the charcoal tubes were contaminated with CS2, and then the effects of them were examinated by using the principle of Gas Adsorption Kinetics. The results obtained were as follows. 1) As the flow rates were increased, k'-values were increased, τ-values were decreased, and k'-values were constant as 3.527±0.558. 2) 10% breakthrough times of 0.05, 0.1 and 0.2LPM were 149, 90 and 34 min, respectively. 3) As the probability of breakthrough were increased, the effects of sampling flow rate against the breakthrough time were proportionally increased.

Pacific abalone Haliotis discus discus is an important fisheries resource in Jeju, Korea. For basic information about its current genetic status in relation to stock enhancement, the level and distribution of genetic variation between wild and released stocks of Pacific abalone in Jeju were examined at nine cross-species microsatellite markers including the use of two novel primers. High levels of polymorphism were observed between the two populations. A total of 146 different alleles were found at all loci, with some alleles being unique. The allelic variability ranged from five to 27 in the wild population and from four to 16 in the released sample. The average observed and expected heterozygosities were estimated to be 0.74 and 0.84 in the wild sample and 0.70 and 0.78 in the released sample, respectively. Although a considerable loss of rare alleles was observed in the released sample, no statistically significant reductions were found in heterozygosity or allelic diversity in the released sample compared to the wild population. Low but significant genetic differentiation was found between the wild and released populations. These results suggest that the intensive breeding practices for stock enhancement may have resulted in a further decrease in genetic diversity, and that the cross-species microsatellite markers used in this study represent a potentially efficient means for further genetic studies, providing beneficial information for the protection and management of H. discus discus.

Because the usage of CFC and HCFC based refrigerants are restricted due to the depletion of ozone layer, the $NH_3$ gas, in the experiment is evaluated to the performance characteristics for the superheat control to improve the energy efficiency. The experiment is carried out about the condensing pressure of refrigeration system from 1,500 kPa to 1,600 kPa through the degree of superheat from 0 to $10^{\circ}C$ at each condensing pressure. As a result, in the case of shell and tube type of heat exchanger, the COP is more efficient than other cases at the degree of superheat $1^{\circ}C$ at each condensing pressure. In the case of shell and disk type of heat exchanger, the COP is the most efficient at the degree of superheat 0.

In order to investigate the fasting effect on duodenal lactase activity in normal adult, 41 cases after NPO for 12hra (basal study) and 11 cases after NPO for 60 hrs were evaluated. The following results were obtained in this study; 1) The lactase activity and sucrase activity in duodenal 2nd portion were 2.01±1.47, and 34.00±22.63mu/mg protein(mean±SD). 2) The lactase activity and sucrase activity in NPO for 48 hrs after basal study were 2.15±40.25, and 14.18±14.68mu/mg protein. The sucrase activity was reduced significantly compare to that of basal activity but the lactase activity was not changed significantly. 3) Marked increase of lactase activity in 2 cases and. decrease in 1 case were noted in 48 hrs after basal study, but its interpretation needs further investigation by more cases evaluated.

The threadsail filefish Stephanolepis cirrhifer is a highly commercial fisheries resource in Korea that suffers intensive anthropogenic pressure across much of its range. For basic information about its current genetic status in relation to stock enhancement, the level and distribution of genetic variation between a wild and a hatchery-bred population were investigated using 10 microsatellite markers developed for Thamnaconus modestus. High levels of polymorphism were observed between the two populations. A total of 95 different alleles were found at all loci, with some alleles being unique. The allelic variability ranged from six to 13 in the wild population and from five to 13 in the hatchery one. The average observed and expected heterozygosities were estimated to be 0.72 and 0.80 in the wild sample and 0.70 and 0.79 in the hatchery one, respectively. These results showed similar genetic variability in the hatchery population, as compared with the wild population and significant genetic differentiation between the wild population and the hatchery samples (F_(ST) = 0.016,P < 0.05). Genetic drift in the intensive breeding practices for stock enhancement has probably promoted differentiation between populations. Significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium were detected in both populations. Our results indicate that further studies using species-specific microsatellite markers will be necessary for a more reliable assessment of genetic diversity of the species.

Efficacy and Accuracy of CT in initial evaluation of the facial bone fracture was compared with the conventional radiographic studies in 36 patients. The results are as follows; 1) CT provides more accurate information than plain x-rays in diagnosis of facial bone fracture. ① CT Showed the herniation of intraorbital soft tissue into the maxillary sinus and orbit floor fractures in blowout fractures. ② CT visualized the inijuries of intraorbital soft tissue in detail.(esp. EOM mm., Optic nerve) ③ Zygomatic bone fracture combined with fracture of the postero-lateral wall of the maxillary sinus was well visualized in CT findings. 2) CT provides a simple and accurate information of fractures of the facial bones in terms of location and extent of the injuries. By analysing CT information, it was possible to study injured portions of the facial bone in detail with a few, but special view of the conventional radiographic studies. 3) CT evaluation of facial bone frctures was possible without added risks in patients with suspected CNS injuries at the same time of CT evaluation of suspected brain trauma. 4) CT had definite advantage in diagnosis, treatment and follow-up in facial bone fractures.
