Today it is getting more and more trendy to display radically different kinds of pieces in fiber arts exhibitions. However, always have been, still predominating are the craft oriented works which are faithfully carrying out the dual functions of utility and beauty. And it is also true that there are works created and exist only for aesthetic values. But what makes current fiber arts field truly "post modern" in the proper sense of the term is the emergence of the so called trans-disciplinary pieces. That is, those pieces and works which transcend or deny traditional categorizations and characterizations. It is, I think, mainly due to the availability of almost infinitely diverse materials and techniques. Despite its importance and influence, however, researches on these works are not readily available. In fact, sheer diversity of materials and techniques utilized in these pieces tends to discourages any systematic study on this subject. Nevertheless, in this paper I try to provide an analysis of some of the major ways of incorporating metals and the metalic techniques in fiber arts. More concretely I first analyze various types of metal incorporating fiber arts pieces into 9 different major categories. Then, for each category I have chosen a couple of exemplars to illustrate conspicuous characteristics of each. And finally by providing concrete and detailed description of the exemplars I assess the merits of each categories. I think that the works of this nature is useful foremost in providing the overview of the current trends of the metal incorporating fiber arts area. In addition it may also be used to set the guidance for the prospective students of "the brave new world."
