Vitamin D and carotid subclinical atherosclerosis in SLE Chang-Bum Bae, Ju-Yang Jung, Bo-ram Go, Hyun-Ah Kim, Chang-Hee Suh Department of Rheumatology, Ajou University School of Medicine, Suwon, Korea Introduction Atherosclerosis develops earlier in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and is the important cause of mortality. It has been suggested that vitamin D deficiency contributed cardiovascular disease and immune dysregulation in SLE. Methods One-hundred two female patients with SLE and 52 normal controls (NC) were recruited. The carotid artery intima-media thickness (cIMT) and plague were assessed by B-mode ultrasound at the carotid artery level. Vitamin 25(OH)D3 levels were checked by immunoradiometric assay using the Bio-Line 25(OH)D3-Ria CT kit (Bio-Line S.A., Belgium). Disease activity markers were checked at the time of enrollment. Results The cIMT of SLE is 0.41±0.08mm, which is higher than NC (0.37±0.11 mm, p=0.012). Also, carotid artery plague index (PI) of SLE is higher than NC (0.68±1.39 vs 0.26±0.87, p=0.026). The cIMT was correlated with age (r=0.442, p<0.001), body mass index (r=0.246, p=0.013), waist-hip ratio (r=0.245, p=0.013), SLE disease activity index (r=0.239, p=0.016), taking aspirin (r=0.244, p=0.013), and the carotid artery PI was correlated with renal involvement (r=0.224, p=0.023) in patients with SLE. Vitamin 25(OH)D3 was not showed correlation with cIMT and carotid artery PI. Also, it was not correlated with disease activity markers. Conclusion In patients with SLE, the risk of cardiovascular disease measured by cIMT and carotid artery plaque was higher than NC, which may be derived from systemic inflammation. However, vitamin D levels were not showed significant correlations with carotid subclinical atherosclerosis. It may be not suitable to assess vitamin D as marker of disease activity or subclinical atherosclerosis.

<P>A facile method to facilitate epitaxial lateral overgrowth (ELO) of gallium nitride (GaN) was developed by using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). High-quality GaN was achieved on sapphire by simply coating the SWCNTs as an intermediate layer for stress and defect mitigation. SWCNTs maintained their integrity at high reaction temperature and led to suppression of edge dislocations and biaxial stress relaxation by up to 0.32 GPa in a GaN template layer. InGaN/GaN multi-quantum-well light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on this high-quality GaN template offered enhanced internal quantum efficiency and light output power with reduced efficiency droop. The method developed here has high potential to replace current ELO methods such as patterned sapphire substrates or buffer layers like SiO2 and SiNx.</P>
Studies for Germ - line Transformation of Bombyx mori by Using Microinjection

A transgenic animal is produced by introducing artificially a foreign gene into its genome. If an introduced foreign gene is useful, this gene is also beneficial to human economically. Here we developed basic genetic techniques. The P vector system was exploited to obtain transfomed Bombyx mori. The domescated silkworm, Bombyx mori has been the target of intensive scientific study because the silkworm has been as a source of silk for textiles and dress materials. To introduce foreign DNA we used microinjection by which DNA is injected directly into eggs through constructed fine glass needles by microinjection technique. The DNA to be injected is composed of two components. The first component is a helper plasmid capable of producing the transposase and second components, transposon construct. For this study, Lac Z was used as a reporter gene in many kinds of expression assay. The results after microinjection were that hatchability was about 1%. The inserted P has been transmitted up to F₄. To identify transformants for each generation we analyzed them by PCR and X-gal staining. We found out X-gal staining expression patterns were irregular at first generation, but generation after generation conspicuous mainly at the nerve system in adults. In larvae this staining was occasionally restricted in posterior silk gland. Therefore it is thought that microinjection techniques have been established.

<P>Using single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) as nanomasks on an undoped GaN template, a significant biaxial stress relaxation was achieved in the subsequently-grown Si-doped n-GaN layer. Enhanced near band edge (NBE) emission intensity, similar free carrier concentrations, and the reduced peak width of the asymmetric (102) crystallographic plane all confirmed the suppression of threading dislocations due to the nanoepitaxial growth process. Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) revealed improved internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of InGaN/GaN multi-quantum wells (MQWs) grown on this n-GaN layer. Furthermore, enhanced light output power and a remarkable reduction in efficiency droop were observed for the blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs), especially at higher injection currents. Our results emphasize the strong potential for SWCNTs as nanomasks in the heteroepitaxy of GaN-based devices without the exploitation of complicated lithography or etching processes.</P>

Aims: This study was performed to investigate the clinical usefullness of the tumor-markers for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), including alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), AFP-L3, and prothrombin induced by vitamin K absence or antagonist-II (PIVKA-II). Methods: Patients who underwent serum AFP, AFP-L3, and PIVKA-II for elevation of space-occupying lesion (SOL) in the liver or elevated serum AFP level without liver SOL were retrospectively reviewed. AFP >5 ng/mL, AFP-L3 >5%, PIVKA-II >40 mAU/mL were used as the cut-off value, respectively. Results: Two-hundred fifty-two patients were included; patients with liver SOL were 219 (86.9%) and those with elevated AFP without liver SOL were 33 (13.1%). In patients with liver SOL, 85 (38.8%) patients were diagnosed as HCC. Twenty-four (17.9%) patients with benign SOL and 53 (62.4%) patients with HCC had elevated AFP level (P<0.001). AFP-L3 was elevated in 5 (3.7%) patients with benign SOL, and 30 (35.3%) patients with HCC (P<0.001). 6 (4.5%) patients with benign SOL and 43 (50.6%) patients with HCC had abnormal PIVK-II level (P<0.001). Sensitivity and specificity of AFP for the HCC diagnosis were 62.4% and 82.1%, respectively. Combination of AFP-L3 to AFP increased sensitivity to 68.2% without change in the specificity. Combination of PIVKA-II to AFP increased sensitivity to 76.5% with slight decrease in specificity (78.4%). Combination of all three tumor-markers increased the sensitivity to 80.0% with 78.4% of specificity. In patients with elevated AFP without liver SOL, 5 (15.2%) and 4 (12.1%) patients had increased AFP-L3 and PIVKA-II, respectively, while, no one had increased both markers. Conclusions: In patients with liver SOL, combination of AFP, AFP-L3, and PIVKA-II improved sensitivity of AFP, not having a significant effect on specificity. None of patients with elevated AFP without liver SOL showed parallel elevation of AFP-L3 and PIVKA-II. Therefore, combined evaluation of these tumor-markers would be beneficial in differential diagnosis.

In this study, sesame oil have been analyzed by near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Sesame oil was mixed with the other edible oil. NIR transmittance spectra of sesame oil mixtures were acquired by using a dip probe. Partial least squares regression (PLSR) was applied to develop a calibration model over the spectral range 1100-1750nm. The calibration model predicted the content of sesame oil for validation set with a standard errors of prediction (SEP) of 0.3871%. Soft Independent Modeling of Class Analogy (SIMCA) was used to identify sesame oil and adulteration. This model identified the sesame oil and adulteration for validation set with 100% accuracy. This study showed that the rapid and non-destructive the determination of the quantitative analysis of sesame oil, the identification of sesame oil and adulteration was successfully performed by portable NIR system.
