Central diabetes insipidus (DI) is a syndrome characterized by thirst, polydipsia and polyuria. Langerhans cell histiocytosis is one of the etiologies of DI. Recently we experienced a central DI associated with Langerhans cell histiocytosis. The 44 years old female patient complained right hip pain polydipsia and polyuria. We carried out water deprivation test. After vasopressin injection, urine osmotic pressure was increased form 109mOsmol/Kg to 327mOsmol/Kg (300%). Brain MRI showed a thickened pituitary stalk and at hot bone CT.CT guided biopsy revealed abnormal histiocytes proliferation and abundant lymphocytes, The final diagnosis was central DI associated with systemic Langerhans cell histiocytosis invading hip bone, L-spine and pituitary stalk. Desmopressin and etoposide chemotherapy were performed to the patient.
에틸 아크릴레이트 아이오노머의 성질에 미치는 양이온 크기의 영향
조규성,나연화,김희석,김준섭,박기주 조선대학교 생산기술연구소 1999 生産技術硏究 Vol.21 No.1
The effects of the size of cations on the properties of polyfethyl acrylate-co-metal acrylate) ionomers containing 3.8 mol% of ionic moiety were investigated. It was found that with changing cations, matrix T_(g)s seem to remain constant; however, cluster T_(g)s increase with decreasing the size of cations. Since ion-hopping occurs at a cluster T_(g) and the electrostatic force of ion pairs decreases with the size of ions increasing, it was suggested that the effect of the size of cation on a cluster T_(g) is operative, but not on a matrix T_(g). It was also found that activation energies for a cluster T_(g) were decreased with decreasing the size of cations; which means that the activation energy values for a cluster T_(g) are not directly related to the cluster T_(g)s. In the present study, the highest value of a cluster T_(g) for the Li ionomer may be one of the reasons why the Li ionomer has the lowest value for an activation energy.

To investigate the antimicrobial and antifungal activity of Chrysanthemum boreale(C. boreale) essential oil, the growth inhibition against Aspergillus nidulans, Fusarium oxysporum, Alternaria mali, Staphylococcus aureus, Streotococcus pyogenes, Streptococcus mutans and Escherichia coli in the presence of the essental oil was monitored by agar dilution method. The antifungal effect of C. boreale on Aspergillus nidulans, Fusarium oxysporum and Alternaria mali as affected at the concentration of 400 ppm. The antibacterial effect of C. boreale on staphylococcus aureus, streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus mutans was affected at the concentration of 0.4 μl, while growth of E. coli was not inhibited at the concentration of essential oil. The results of this experiment on microorganisms indicated that naturally occuring chemical substances from C. boreale might have biologically toxic activities, that is, allelopathic potentials to the microorganisms.

The effects of water discharged from Kangnung hydropower plant on the water quality and some bacterial population of Namdaecheon Stream, Kangnung were investigated. The water discharged above station 3 affected the water quality significantly; the water quality of station 3 and station 4 took a turn for the worse, however those of station 5, station 6 and station 7 changed for the better. It was also true with the bacterial population; The number of cells of bacteria increased in station 3 and 4, but the number significantly decreased in station 5, station 6, and station 7. The data suggested the idea that the water discharged from Kangnung hydropower plant changed the water quality and some bacterial population by dilution effect.
Vol.21 No.1
The effects of crown ether on the dynamic mechanical properties of potassium sulfonated polystyrene ionomer were investigated. As expected, it was found that when crown ether molecules were added to the ionomer, the crown ether molecules interacted with K^(+) cations and weakened the ionic interaction between K^(+)/sulfonate ion pairs of the ionomer significantly. Thus, no multiplets were present, and, in turn, no clustering was found. When the ether was added to interact with 50% of K^(+) cations, weak clustering was observed: the clustering was slightly stronger than that of a 50% neutralized ionomer. From this result, it was speculated that in the 50% neutralized sample H^(+) ⇔ K^(+) cation exchange occurs rapidly between -SO₃H and -S0₃K groups in multiplets. which weakens ionic interactions. In the 50% crown ether-added sample, however, -S0₃- group, instead of -S0₃H, is present, and thus no cation exchange is expected to occur.

An implantable microphone that can be utilized as part of a totally implantable hearing aid is designed and implemented. The proposed microphone is implanted in the center of the pinna, and designed to ensure the speech frequency range and the appropriate sensitivity. The characteristics of the proposed microphone are evaluated using a finite element analysis (FEA). The microphone is composed of a small electric condenser microphone, titanium case 6.2mm in diameter and 3mm high, and $10{\mu}m$ SUS316L vibrating membrane in contact with hypodermic tissue to maintain the sensitivity of the microphone. The microphone components are all made of biocompatible materials, then the assembled microphone is hermetically sealed using a polymer and ceramic. Experiments with the fabricated microphone confirm an operational bandwidth of up to 5kHz without any decline of sensitivity in 6mm of hypodermic tissue.

Amplification of ENSO effects on Indian summer monsoon by absorbing aerosols
Kim, Maeng-Ki,Lau, William K. M.,Kim, Kyu-Myong,Sang, Jeong,Kim, Yeon-Hee,Lee, Woo-Seop Springer-International 2016 Climate dynamics Vol.46 No.7
<P>In this study, we present observational evidence, based on satellite aerosol measurements and MERRA reanalysis data for the period 1979-2011, indicating that absorbing aerosols can have strong influence on seasonal-to-interannual variability of the Indian summer monsoon rainfall, including amplification of ENSO effects. We find a significant correlation between ENSO (El Nino Southern Oscillation) and aerosol loading in AprilMay, with La Nina (El Nino) conditions favoring increased (decreased) aerosol accumulation over northern India, with maximum aerosol optical depth over the Arabian Sea and Northwestern India, indicative of strong concentration of dust aerosols transported from West Asia and Middle East deserts. Composite analyses based on a normalized aerosol index (NAI) show that high concentration of aerosol over northern India in April-May is associated with increased moisture transport, enhanced dynamically induced warming of the upper troposphere over the Tibetan Plateau, and enhanced rainfall over northern India and the Himalayan foothills during May-June, followed by a subsequent suppressed monsoon rainfall over all India, consistent with the elevated heat pump (EHP) hypothesis (Lau et al. in Clim Dyn 26: 855-864, 2006. doi: 10.1007/s00382-006-0114-z). Further analyses from sub-sampling of ENSO years, with normal (<1-sigma), and abnormal (>1-sigma) NAI over northern India respectively show that the EHP may lead to an amplification of the Indian summer monsoon response to ENSO forcing, particularly with respect to the increased rainfall over the Himalayan foothills, and the warming of the upper troposphere over the Tibetan Plateau. Our results suggest that absorbing aerosol, particular desert dusts can strongly modulate ENSO influence, and possibly play important roles as a feedback agent in climate change in Asian monsoon regions.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is a key neuropeptide regulating reproduction in humans and other vertebrates. Recently, GnRH-like cDNAs and peptides were reported in marine mollusks, implying that GnRH-mediated reproduction is an ancient neuroendocrine system that arose prior to the divergence of protostomes and deuterostomes. Here, we evaluated the reproductive control system mediated by GnRH in the Pacific abalone <I>Haliotis discus hannai</I>. We cloned a prepro-GnRH cDNA (<I>Hdh-GnRH</I>) from the pleural-pedal ganglion (PPG) in <I>H. discus hannai</I>, and analyzed its spatiotemporal gene expression pattern. The open reading frame of <I>Hdh-GnRH</I> encodes a protein of 101 amino acids, consisting of a signal peptide, a GnRH dodecapeptide, a cleavage site, and a GnRH-associated peptide. This structure and sequence are highly similar to GnRH-like peptides reported for mollusks and other invertebrates. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction demonstrated that <I>Hdh-GnRH</I> mRNA was more strongly expressed in the ganglions (PPG and cerebral ganglion [CG]) than in other tissues (gonads, gills, intestine, hemocytes, muscle, and mantle) in both sexes. In females, the expression levels of <I>Hdh-GnRH</I> mRNA in the PPG and branchial ganglion (BG) were significantly higher at the ripe and partial spent stages than at the early and late active stages. In males, <I>Hdh-GnRH</I> mRNA levels in the BG showed a significant increase in the partial spent stage. Unexpectedly, <I>Hdh-GnRH</I> levels in the CG were not significantly different among the examined stages in both sexes. These results suggest that <I>Hdh-GnRH</I> mRNA expression profiles in the BG and possibly the PPG are tightly correlated with abalone reproductive activities.</P>
