        Colonoscopy is an effective method for discovery of adenomas and for colon cancer screening and prevention. However, it has been difficult to assess its accuracy. We retrospectively estimated the colonoscopic miss-rate of colorectal polyp and adenoma. We studied the data from patients who had colonoscopic polypectomy within 60 days after the initial examination. From 78 patients, a total of 235 polyps were found, 37 (15.7%) of polyps and 27 (14.2%) of adenomas were missed. As the size of polyps and adenomas decreased, the miss-rate increased significantly. Pathologic findings of missed polyps revealed adenoma (73.0%), hyperplasia (24.3%), inflammation (2.7%). Adenomas with high grade dysplasia were detected in 10.8% of missed polyps. The most frequent location was cecum and transverse colon. There was no difference of missing rate according to the shape of polyp, colonopist and number of polyps detected on the initial examination. There is a significant colonoscopic missing rate for colorectal polyps in routine clinical practice, especially in patients with small colorectal polyps and at the site of the cecum and transverse colon.

        졸겔법에 의한 티탄산납 제조 및 유기산 흡착특성

        Generally PbTiO3 if manufactured in a form of thin films which is useful for the application infrared sensors and non-volatile memory devices. Moreover PbTiO3 has a characteristic of adsorption for organic acid as well as electronic property. Organic acid adsorption properties of PbTiO3 powder prepared by sol-gel method was compared with the powder purchased from Aldrich Co. Crystallization and particle size of PbTiO3 are influenced by process variable, such as dilution of sol solution, catalysis, calcination temperature, calcination time, etc. As the size of PbTiO3 power decreased until several nanometers, adsorption of acetic acid and formic acid was increased 1.5-fold and 1.2-fold respectively

        회분식 반응기에서의 공정변수 변화에 의한 침강성 탄산칼슘 제조

        For the preparation of calcium carbonate particles from aqueous Ca(OH)2 slurry, carbonation reaction of aqueous Ca(OH)2 slurry was carried out by batch method the CO2 into reactor filled with aqueous slurry of Ca(OH)2. The concentration of Ca(OH)2 varies from 1.00 to 7.00wt%, reactor temperature at 20 and 40℃, and reactor pressure from atmospheric pressure to 6.0kgf/cm2. Crystal structure of calcium carbonate was of calcite, the particle size were about 0.05 ∼2.0㎛, and the particle shape was cubic and spindle. When reactor temperature was higher, particle size of calcium carbonate was bigger and particle share was varied, but reaction rate was increased. When reactor pressure was higher, particle size of calcium carbonate was smaller, particle shape was cubic, and reaction ramie was increased.

      • 분사법에 의한 탄산칼슘 제조

        본 연구는 탄산가스화법에 의한 탄산칼슘 입자 제조 공정에 있어서, 탄산가스로 채워진 반응기에 수산화칼슘 슬러리를 분사하는 방법으로 탄산칼슘 입자를 제조하였다. 수산화 칼슘의 농도(0.25~1.0wt%), 분사압력(0.5kgf /㎠~1.5kgf /㎠) 및 반응기 온도(20℃, 28℃)의 변화에 따른 생성된 탄산칼슘을 관찰하였다. 수산화 칼슘의 농도가 비교적 높으면(0.75wt%, 1.0wt%), 생성물의 pH와 전도도는 높게 나타났다. 분사압력에 의한 탄산칼슘 제조의 변화는 분사압력이 높아질수록(1.5kgf /㎠), pH와 전도도는 높게 측정되었다. 그러나, 수산화 칼슘의 농도와 분사압력의 변화가 탄산칼슘의 입자크기, 형태, 결정구조에 영향을 미치지는 않았다. 반응기의 온도가 28℃에서 생성된 탄산칼슘은 1.0㎛이하의 칼사이트 상 입자가 제조되었으며, 20℃에서 생성된 탄산칼슘은 0.5㎛이하의 칼사이트 상 입자가 제조되었다. 반응기의 온도가 낮아질수록 탄산칼슘 입자의 크기가 작아짐을 알 수 있었다. For the preparation of calcium carbonate particles from aqueous Ca(OH)2 slurry, carbonation reaction of aqueous Ca(OH)2 slurry was carried out by spouting the aqueous slurry of Ca(OH)2 into reactor filled with CO2 gas. The concentration of Ca(OH)2 varies from 0.25wt% to 1.0wt%, nozzle pressure from 0.5kgf /㎠ to 1.5kgf /㎠, and reactor temperature were set at 20℃ and 28℃. With relatively high concentration of 0.75wt% and 1.0wt% of Ca(OH)2, pH and conductivity of product-stream were observed high value. High pH and conductivity were observed at high nozzle pressure of 1.5kgf /㎠. The concentration of Ca(OH)2 and nozzle pressure, however, did not change the particle size and shape of calcium carbonate synthesized by carbonation reaction. The reaction temperature affected particle size. At reactor temperatures of 28℃ and 20℃, the particle sizes were about 1.0㎛ and 0.5㎛, respectively. Crystal structure of calcium calcium carbonate was of calcite. When reactor temperature was lower, the size of calcium carbonate particle was smaller.

      • 미만성 경화 아형 갑상선 유두암 1예

        The diffuse sclerosing variant (DSV) is a rare malignant tumour that accounts for 0.7-5.3% of all papillary thyroid cancers. DSV tends to occur at a younger age and has a higher incidence of cervical lymph node metastases, compared with papillary thyroid carcinoma. A 62-year-old female patient diagnosed thyroid nodule with diffuse and mild increased 18F-deoxy-glucose (FDG) on FDG positron emission tomography (PET)-computed tomogram (CT) scan. The ultrasound images showed typical findings of DSV such as diffusely enlarged thyroid lobes and diffusely scattered microcalcification. We performed this patient ultrasonography guided fine needle aspiration and cytologic analysis revealed papillary carcinoma. Total thyroidectomy with central compartment node dissection and lateral lymph node dissection was performed and finally diagnosed DVS. The authors report this case with literature review.

        사업장 소음 폭로에 의한 일과성 역치 상승과 회복

        To determine the recovery time from noise-induced temporary threshold shift(TTS), a prospective field study was conducted at three worksites where workers are known to be exposed high level of noise. Subjects were selected according to answers on a questionnaire which inquired about otological history and previous noise exposure, including avocational, military and occupational exposures. After excluding employee with past otologic problems, recent exposure to high level noise, and under medications, total 92 employees participated in the study. Among 92 participants, complete consecutive audiometric examinations were carried out at 0∼2 hours, 5∼7 hours, 14∼16 hours after worktime noise exposure on 26 participants wearing hearing protectors and 22 participants wearing no protective devices. The difference between the hearing level 0∼2 hours after noise exposure and 5∼7 hours is statistically significant by paired t-test(p<0.01). The median recovery times calculated from the data of 22 participants wearing no protective hearing devices are 15.6 hours at 4000Hz, and 7.7 hours, 10.3 hours, 8.4 hours at 1000Hz, 2000Hz and 8000Hz respectively. These data suggest that when measuring the pure tone audiometry for noise exposed workers, at least 16 hours noise-free interval is required.

        Malignant hyperthermia is the disorder of calcium regulation within skeletal muscle associated predominantly with anesthesia. It is triggered by volatile anesthetics and depolarizing neuromuscular blocking agents. We experienced a case of malignant hyperthermia. 50 years old female patient was transferred to our emergency room that she was developed tachyarrhythmia and high fever. She was taken arthroscopic examination under the general anesthesia with enflurane and succinylcholine. We suspected malignant hyperthermia and promptly treated her with dantrolene sodium. She was developed disseminated intravascular coagulopathy and acute renal failure then we were intensive care to her. She was discharged without sequela. We experienced successful management of malignant hyperthermia.

      • The Effect of Germination Temperature on Malt Quality of Malting Barely ‘Hopum’

        The purpose of this study was to investigate malt characteristics according to the germination temperatures of tow-row variety ‘Hopum’. Hopum has been widely cultivated in Korea for beer-making. In this study, hopum material with germination rate of 97% was used and was malted at five temperatures, 10, 16, 18, 20, 25℃. The higher the germination temperature, the lower the malt yield, and EBC (European Brewery Convention) color index of the wort was darker. There was no significant differences in sugar content, pH and Kolbach index of malt germinated at a germination temperature of over the 16℃. Both α-amylase and β-amylase was induced in malts germinated at all temperatures. β-glucan remaining excessively in the malt makes it difficult to filter the wort during brewing, lowers the filtration rate, and causes problems such as haze and sediment formation in beer. In this experiment, the contents of β-glucan was lower as the germination temperature was higher. We intend to expand the diversity of beer brewing using domestic barley varieties by providing information on quality malt with different germination temperatures.

        Cell Growth Inhibition and Induction of Apoptosis by Snake Venom Toxin in Ovarian Cancer Cell via Inactivation of Nuclear Factor κB and Signal Transducer and Activator of Transcription 3

        Snake venom toxin from Vipera lebetina turanica induces apoptosis in many cancer cell lines, but there is no study about the apoptotic effect of snake venom toxin on human ovarian cancer cells. In this study, we investigated the apoptotic effect of snake venom toxin in human ovarian cancer PA-1 and SK-OV3 cells. Snake venom toxin dose dependently (0~10 μg/mL) inhibited ovarian cancer cell growth with IC50 values 4.5 μg/mL in PA-1 cells, and 6.5 μg/mL in SKOV3 cells. Our results also showed that apoptotic cell death increased by snake venom toxin in a dose dependent manner (0~10 μg/mL). Consistent with increased cell death, snake venom toxin increased the expression of pro-apoptotic protein Bax and caspase-3, but down-regulated anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2. Untreated ovarian cancer cells showed a high DNA binding activity of nuclear factor B (NF-κB), but it was inhibited by snake venom toxin accompanied by inhibition of p50 and p65 translocation into the nucleus as well as phosphorylation of inhibitory κB. Snake venom toxin also inhibited DNA binding activity of the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3). Moreover, the combination treatment of NF-κB (salicylic acid, 1 or 5 μM) and STAT3 (stattic, 1 μM) with snake venom toxin (1 μg/mL) further enhanced cell growth inhibitory effects of snake venom toxin. These results showed that snake venom toxin from Vipera lebetina turanica caused apoptotic cell death of ovarian cancer cells through the inhibition of NF-κB and STAT3 signal, and suggested that snake venom toxin may be applicable as an anticancer agent for ovarian cancer.
