A highly dispersed W/O emulsion of silicone oil (cyclomethicone)/water system was prepared with a nonionic surfactant. The surface and interfacial tension between the oil and water were characterized in terms of the droplet size distribution and viscosity change of the emulsion. When the dispersed phase concentration was relatively high, the viscosity of the emulsion was rapidly increased and the droplet size of the emulsion was decreased. The rheological behavior of the emulsion system showed non-Newtonian and shear thinning phenomena depending upon the content of the dispersed phase. The droplet size of the emulsion was decreased with increasing surfactant content and water concentration. The relative viscosity of the emulsion was better predicted with the Choi-Schowalter model than with the Taylor model. The value of the complex modulus increased with increasing surfactant concentration. The linear viscoelastic region was expanded with a dispersed phase concentration. According to the change in the viscosity, the behavior was classified into three distinct regions: [I] linear viscoelastic, [II] partially viscoelastic, and [III] viscous. The creep/recovery behaviors in each region were characterized.

For this study, potato starch, an easily accessible ingredient, was used to make the traditional pressed sweet, dasik, with honey, sirup and fructooligosaccharides as the binding material and green tea powder added to create“ green tea dasik.”Green tea dasik were then examined on their qualities such as sugar content, moisture, Aw, pH, color and mechanical measurements and the sensory acceptability was evaluated. To improve the texture of green tea dasik with 8% green tea powder, honey and fructooligosaccharides were respectively used in place of sirup as the binding material. As a result, the sugar content was the highest when honey was used, but it was also higher with fractooligosaccharides than with sirup. The moisture content was the highest with honey; Aw was the lowest with fractooligosaccharides; and pH was the highest with sirup. The chromaticity test results showed that the L value was the lowest with honey, revealing dark colors. Dasik with fractooligosaccharides showed the brightest colors. As for the a value, dasik using honey, sirup and oligosaccharide showed -5.93, -2.64 and -8.85, respectively. The b value for yellow chromaticity was the highest with fractooligosaccharides. The mechanical measurement test results showed that dasik with fructooligosaccharides have the highest values in elasticity, cohesiveness, chewiness and gumminess. In the sensory acceptability test, the scores for dasik with honey were high in color, sweetness and moistness while the scores for dasik with fructooligosaccharides were the highest in adhesiveness, chewiness, hardness and overall acceptability. As a result of investigating the characteristics in the making of green tea dasik, fructooligosaccharides are evaluated highly as a possible ingredient of dasik.

Background: Folic acid is involved in inflammatory reactions; however, the association between folic acid and al-lergic diseases, particularly asthma, remains unclear. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the association between serum folic acid levels and asthma in Koreans.Methods: This study analyzed the serum folic acid levels of 6,615 individuals included in the 2016–2018 Korea Na-tional Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. The prevalence of asthma was determined using a questionnaire that identified cases of physician-diagnosed asthma. The relationship between serum folic acid levels and asthma was analyzed using logistic regression analysis.Results: Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that a 1 ng/mL increase in serum folic acid level significantly reduced the risk of asthma after adjusting for confounding factors including sex, age, household income, current smoking, current alcohol use, and body mass index (odds ratio [OR], 0.930; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.876–0.987; P=0.017). The relationship between the adjusted odds of asthma and serum folic acid levels were consistent-ly inverse (OR, 2.266; 95% CI, 1.126–4.420; P for trend=0.038).Conclusion: Serum folic acid levels are inversely associated with physician-diagnosed asthma in the Korean popu-lation.
Effects of brimonidine tartrate on Propionibacterium acnes-induced inflammatory reaction

Background: Brimonidine tartrate(Mirvaso<sup>®</sup>, Galderma, USA) is a highly specific α2 adrenergic receptor agonist and acts on vascular smooth muscle to constrict blood vessels. We experienced that brimonidine tartrate treatment of patients with acne and rosacea resulted in alleviation of flushing as well as improvement of acne. Since it is well recognized that inflammatory reaction induced by Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) is critically important in the pathogenesis of acne, we speculate that brimonidine tartrate has anti-inflammatory activity in addition to its vaso-constrictive effect. Objectives: We investigated the effects of brimonidine tartrate on P. acnes-induced inflammation in monocytes and keratinocytes that are importantly involved in acne pathogenesis. Methods: The monocytes and keratinocytes were treated with brimonidine tartrate, and the expression of inflammatory cytokines was assessed. Results: When applied to both cells, brimonidine tartrate suppressed the P. acnes-induced pro-inflammatory cytokine such as IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 in monocytes and keratinocytes. Also, brimonidine tartrate reduced pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion by P. acnes. Conclusion: These results demonstrate that brimonidine tartrate has additional anti-inflammatory property besides its vaso-constrictive potential, suggesting that brimonidine tartrate is beneficial in the treatment of patients with acne and rosacea via dual action mechanisms.

Although the prognosis of papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is extremely good, locoregional recurrences after initial treatment occur. Thyroglobulin (Tg) is a reliable tumor marker to detect recurrence or persistence of PTC. However, occasionally serum Tg may miss the detection of a recurrence. We report a 54-year-old female presented with hoarseness due to cervical recurrence without concomitant elevation of serum Tg and anti-Tg antibody, in contrast to extremely increased needle-washout Tg, who had undergone a total thyroidectomy and radioiodine ablation as initial therapies for PTC. Several factors causing such discrepancy between needlewashout Tg and serum Tg can be suggested including site of recurrence, volume of tumor, interference by some kind of plasma antibodies other than anti-Tg antibody, and any conformational defect of Tg protein. Among them, the most convincing explanation is that any conformational defect of Tg may lead to impaired secretion of Tg to blood. We suggest that more studies are needed to find the cause for potential mechanisms involved in PTC recurrences without increased serum Tg.
TFG is a novel regulator for lipid production in sebocytes

Background: TRK-fused gene (TFG) is located in endoplasmic reticulum (ER) exit sites. This protein is known to be involved in COPII-coated vesicle formation, together with many scaffold proteins such as Sec16 and Sec13. Objectives: Since it has been recognized that many lipid molecules are synthesized in ER, we investigated the putative role of TFG in lipid production of sebocytes. Methods: We cultured immortalized human sebocytes, and induced lipid production by treatment of insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1). The putative role of TFG was investigated using the overexpressing and knockdown system. Results: When sebocytes were treated with IGF-1, the lipid production was increased. During IGF-1-induced lipogenesis, the protein level of TFG was increased in the time- and dose-dependent manners. When TFG was overexpressed using recombinant adenovirus, the lipid production of sebocytes was increased. Consistent with this result, regulators for lipid synthesis such as PPARγ, SREBP1 and SCD were also increased by TFG overexpression. Conversely, knockdown of TFG using microRNA resulted in the decrease of PPARγ, SREBP1 and SCD. Conclusion: These findings suggest that TFG is a novel regulator for lipid production in sebocytes, which can be a new target for acne treatment.
