Proceedings of International Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. 244-254, 1999.-Obesity can be defined as a metabolic disease due to an increased state of fat tissues caused by an imbalance of calorie intake and use. Recently, in Korea by improvement and westernization of food intake, along with decrease in exercise activities, the prevalence of obesity has increased greatly. Our objectives were to study stability and effects of decrease in body fat by administering red ginseng compound preparation (known to have body fat decreasing effects in laboratory animals) to obesity patients on low calorie diets. Changes in weight and body fat were measured while carrying out calorie-restricted diets on patients for 4 weeks, then administering red ginseng compound preparation for another 4 weeks. The patients were 20 people whose BMI were 25kg/㎡ or over and whose percent body fat was also 30% or over when tested by bioelectrical conductivity. 1. Changes in weight were from 70.04kg(base line) to 67.43kg(after taking red ginseng compound preparation). 2. In similar sense, BMI decreased from 27.12kg/㎡(base line) to 26.56kg/㎡(after dieting), and further to 26.01kg/㎡ (after taking red ginseng compound preparation). The BMI seemed to decrease significantly compared to the baseline after the use of red ginseng compound. 3. Waist hip ratio was changed from 0.8858(base line) to 0.8728, but it was statistically insignificant. 4. The percent body fat was 35,16%(base line), 33.87%(after dieting), and 31.68%(after taking red ginseng compound preparation). 5. Complete blood cell count and blood chemisrty remained unaffected by the administration. 6. In concern to endocrinologic studies, T3 decreased from 118.7 to 98.2ng/dL, and T4 increased from 8.8 to 9.2㎕/ dL. Epinephrine showed a tendency to decreased from 0.27 to 0.25 ng/mL, and norepinephrine increased from 0.39 to 0.44ng/mL. 7. Leptin was not changed. 8. Some patients complained adverse effects; constipation(5 patients, may be due to diet therapy), fatigue (2 patients), pruritus(2 patients), flushing(s patients), dizziness(3 patients) and epigastric discomfort(2 patients). However their symptoms were mild, so medication did not stopped. In conclusion, loss of weight without significant side effects was observed during low calorie diet and red ginseng compound preparation administration. This is thought to be in relation to sympathetic nerve system rather than adrenal gland. Also, further long0term studies should be required, since the observed results were based on short-term changes in weight.

        족관절 내과골절에서 피질골 나사못을 이용한 변형된 긴장대 고정술

        목적 : 전위된 족관절 내과골절에 대해 피질골 나사못을 이용한 변형된 긴장대 고정술을 이용한 치료결과를 분석해 보고자 하였다. 대상 및 방법 : 2001년 1월부터 2003년 1월까지 전위된 내과골절에 대해 변형된 긴장대 고정술을 시행 받고 최소 1년 이상 추시관찰 가능 하였던 24례를 대상으로 하였다. 남자 13례, 여자 11례로 평균 연령은 46세였다. 골절은 Lauge-Hansen 분류법을 사용하였으며, 결과는 Meyer와 Kumler의 평가 방법을 이용하였다. 결과 : 13례 (54%)에서 우수의 결과를 얻었고, 9례 (38%)에서 양호의 결과를 얻었으며, 운동범위의 제한이 발생한 1례에서 보통, 후외상성 관절염이 발생한 1례에서 불량의 결과를 얻었다. 결론 : 전위된 족관절 내과골절에서 피질골 나사못을 이용한 변형된 긴장대 고정술은 견고한 내고정과 조기 관절 운동이 가능한 효과적인 수술 방법이 될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. Purpose : To evaluate the clinical results of modified tension band wire technique using cortical screw for treatment of displaced medial malleolar fractures of the ankle. Materials and Methods : From January 2001 to January 2003, 24 patients were treated by modified tension band wiring using cortical screw for medial malleolar fracture. The follow-up period was 12~35 months (average 18 months). There were 13 males and 11 females, and the mean age was 46 years. Fractures were classified by Lauge-Hansen's classification. The results were analyzed by Meyer and Kumler's criteria. Results : There were 13 cases (54%) of excellent, 9 cases (38%) of good, and one case of fair because of limitation of motion of the ankle joint and one case of poor which showed post-traumatic arthritis of the ankle. Conclusion : Modified tension band wire technique using cortical screw can be an effective operative method for the treatment of displaced medial malleolar fractures of the ankle.

      • Web기반의 원격모니터링을 통한 냉간 압연의 공간제어 시스템 해석

        In this paper, web-based remote monitoring for Al cold-rolling system is developed and the analysis of spatial control system is performed. The remote monitoring system is used to capture the status of cold-rolling system regardless of time and locations. We analyze spatial control algorithm of the system with the collected data. The usefulness of spatial control system is shown by simulation studies.

      • 중·노년의 홍삼복용이 심폐능력과 인지능력에 미치는 영향

        This study was performed to investigate the effect of 12 weeks red ginseng intaking on the cardiovascular andcognitie performance in the middle-aged and elderly women. Sixty-four volunteers, all over 55 years of age, agreed to participate and were placed in 8 groups; in the elderly (65-74 yrs), ginseng intaking and exercise group(n=8), only exercise group(n=8), only ginseng intaking group(n=8), and control group(n=8); in the millde-aged(55-64 yrs), ginseng intaking and exercise group(n=8), only exercise group(n=8), only ginseng intaking group(n=8), and control group(n=8). The subjects who joined this program were asked to take red ginseng or participate in exercise program(3 times/week, 80min/day), depending on particular group for 12 weeks. They were tested on their heart rate for resting and sub-maximum exercise and cognitive performance tasks(information processing speed and WAIS-test) at the beginning and the end of the 12-weeks program. For data analysis, mean and standard deviatin scores were calulcated and ANOVAs were used. In the middle-aged, ginseng intaking was influenced on both information processing speed(represented by finger simple reaction time and choice reaction time), and spatial ability andinoformation processing performance on visual stimulation (Trail-making). There was also exercise effect on same tasks. But ginseng intakig was not influenced on cardiovascular function and other cognitive tasks(eye-hand corordination, digit-span, Digit-symbol substitution, tapping). In the elderly, ginseng intaking was not influenced on any information processing speed and cognitive tasks. These results indicate that ginseng intaking may be useful for information processing speed of the middle-aged, but not for that of the elderly.

        Phased Array 트랜스듀서에 있어서 구성 압전소자수의 변화에 따른 초음파 빔 전파 특성의 수치 해석

        일반적인 하나 또는 두개의 압전소자를 사용하는 트랜스듀서에 비하여 다수의 압전소자를 사용하는 어레이 트랜스듀서는 각 압전소자에 가해지는 펄스의 지연시간을 제어함으로써 초음파 빔을 임의의 지점에 집속시킬 수 있고 기계적 구동없이 임의의 방향으로 조향시켜 실시간 주사를 할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 페이즈드 어레이 트랜스듀서의 설계조건은 압전소자의 수, 압전소자의 크기, 그리고 압전소자 사이 간격 등 여러가지가 있으며, 본 연구에서는 그 중에서 압전소자수의 변화에 따른 초음파 빔의 특성을 호이겐스의 원리를 이용한 수평횡파의 시뮬레이션을 통하여 평가하였다. 그 결과 초음파빔은 조향각이 증가할수록 음압이 감소하며, 초음파 빔 특성도 점차적으로 분산됨을 알 수 있었고 또한 초점거리가 증가 할수록 초점에서의 집속효과는 감소하고, 압전소자의 수가 증가되면 집속효과는 향상됨을 알 수 있었다. A phased array is a multi-element piezoelectric device whose elements are individually excited by electric pulses at programmed delay time. One of the advantages of using phased array in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) application over conventional ultrasonic transducers is their great maneuverability of ultrasonic beam. There are some parameters such as the number and the size of the piezoelectric elements and the inter-element spacing of the elements to design phased array transducer. In this study, the characteristic of ultrasonic beam for phased array transducer due to the variation of the number of elements has been simulated for ultrasonic SH-wave on the basis of Huygen's principle. Ultrasonic beam directivity and focusing due to the change of time delay of each element were discussed due to the change of the number of piezoelectric elements. It was found that ultrasonic beam was much more spreaded and hence its sound pressure was decreased as steering angle of ultrasonic beam was increased. In addition, the ability of However, the ability of beam focusing was improved as the number of consisting elements was increased.

      • Visible Human Data의 3차원 가시화에 대한 연구

        Visualization is the process of exploring, transforming and viewing data as images to gain understanding and insight into the data. Visualization in medicine is helpful in understanding human anatomy by presenting the information in a form that is not only pleasing but also easily recognizable as well as in gaining functional attributes of medical systems, such as biomechanical and physiological properties. Medical applications include accurate anatomy and function mapping, enhanced diagnosis. accurate treatment planning and rehearsal, and education/training. The Visible Human data set of the National Library of Medicine, the most complete anatomically detailed. computerized database of the human body ever assembled, has been used for these purposes. In this study, we have visualized the Visible Human Data set with VTK(Visualization ToolKit, Kitware Inc.), IAP(Image Application Platform, ISG Inc.) and Visual C++ 6.0. A motivation of this study is the fact that computer imaging techniques have become an important diagnostic tool in the practice of modern medicine. The 3D visualization system consists of a basic 2D image processing such as filtering, panning, zooming and measuring image as well as 3D image processing such as multiplanar reformatting, surface rendering and volume rendering. The wide-spread use and accessibility of the web have been required to provide the visualization of 3D image on the web. Thus, we have developed web-based medical 3D visualization system that supports World-Wide-Web using VRML and client/server architecture.

      • 레이저 광학적 기법을 응용한 비파괴 평가기법의 적용에 관한 최근 연구활동

        구조물의 비접촉식 비파괴 평가 기법으로 레이저를 이용한 광학적 기법이 종래의 적용하기 어려운 실시간 평가, 고온환경 및 복잡한 형상의 구조물에 대한 최적의 기법으로 적용되고 있다. 레이저를 이용한 광학적 기법으로 레이저 간섭현상을 이용한 전자스페클패턴간섭(ESPI)기법이 있고, 레이저를 응용하여 초음파를 발생 및 수신하는 레이저 유도 초음파 기법이 있다. ESPI기법에서는 변형의 변화율을 측정하는 shearography기법을 적용하여 외부 진동 노이즈에 둔감하여 현작적용이 용이하고 CCD와 컴퓨터를 적용하여 적층형 복합재료에서 층간 분리 및 내부 기공등의 결함 등을 실시간으로 평가할 수 있는 비파괴 평가 기법을 제공한다. 레이저 유도 초음파 기법은 초음파의 발생을 펄스 레이저의 조사로 비접촉식의 초음파 발생 기법을 제공하며, 또한 초음파의 수신에서 레이저 간섭계를 활용할 수 있으므로 기존의 초음파 비파괴 평가기법을 비접촉기법으로 적용할 수 있다. 한편 레이저 유도 초음파 기법에서는 주사형 레이저 유도 초음파(Scanning Laser Source) 기법을 적용하여 기존의 초음파 C-scan에서 적용하기 어려운 복잡한 형상의 구조물이나 표면 균열등에 대한 스캐닝 영상을 제공하는 첨단 기술이 적용되었다.

      • 공공체육시설의 활용방안

        An effective use of public facilities for life sports was studied. The purpose of this study was 1) to examine the present management and sport programs of the public sport facilities, and 20 to provide more effective and productive sports management and programs for Cheongju-city community, which will be resulting in an independence of Chungbuk Athletics Association and the enhancement of level of citizens' health and physical fitness. After the investigation on the present situations of managing public sport facilities, this study showed the following results and suggestions. First, this study found several problems (e.g, a few numbers of sport experts and programs, ineffective opening and closing time for each facility, etc..) and suggested new plans on the management of public facilities for sport activities. Second, this study provided more practical sport programs for each age group, regarding to each public sport facility. In addition, these sport facilities were also used for cultural activities and resting places for the community. Third, this study also suggested that an indepence of Chungbuk Athletic Association and the enhancement of level of citizens' health and physical fitness should be consequently accomplished by activation of effective management on sport programs and facilities.
