"Silent Spring" is an exemplary work of ‘science nonfiction literature’ that successfully combines science and literature. Rachel Carson uses scientific evidence to persuade her readers and a variety of literary techniques to engage them. Carson masterfully intertwines scientific truths with her literary and poetic sensibilities, underscored by a profound ecological consciousness. By analyzing the criticisms of “Silent Spring” that appear in “Silent Spring at 50,” this paper seeks to more objectively evaluate Carson's arguments and explore the way forward for the genre of science nonfiction literature. The analysis reveals that some criticisms of Carson may be ascribed to the limitations of her era, while some other critiques appear unjust, given that Carson's focus diverged from that of her critics. Still other criticisms are unfairly directed at Carson. The paper suggests that Carson's work could have better exemplified scientific discourse by embracing the possibility of error and avoiding overly simplistic binary logic. By employing Carson as a reflective model, future generations can improve their ability to merge science and literature.

Socially Assistive Robotics in Autism Spectrum Disorder
안동현,최성진 한양대학교 의과대학 2016 Hanyang Medical Reviews Vol.36 No.1
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorders that is characterized by complex behavioral phenotype and deficits in both social and cognitive functions and has been gradually increasing for the past 20 years. However, practically there are some difficulties in diagnosis and treatment due to a limited number of specialist and consider-able cost. Emerging technology, especially socially assistive robotics (SAR), has expanded into the evaluation and intervention for children with ASD. SAR refers to a robot that pro-vides assistance to the user in a social interaction setting. SAR becomes a tool that can teach or demonstrate socially desirable behaviors to help children who have trouble ex-pressing themselves to others owing to their underdeveloped communication and social skills as a result of ASD. This paper reviews the use of SAR to assist in the therapy of children with ASD and the extent to which the robots were successful in helping the children in their social, emotional and communication deficits was investigated. The study investi-gates the different roles that these robots were observed to play with children with ASD by categorizing and the outcome of studies that have been conducted in Korea. Despite the fact that SAR research is still in its formative stages, if rigorous research plans are developed based on clinical usefulness and effectiveness, and if a clinician with specialized knowl-edge of ASD participates in or evaluates the results of the research, there is the possibility to create a new paradigm for the treatment of ASD.

This article studies the responses of students who read The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe to see how they differ from reading the Christian message in the Bible. This study employs qualitative methods to understand readers’ literary experiences, reflections on faith, realizations and resolutions. Response journals, interviews, and surveys were used to collect the data. The findings revealed that a literary work can turn difficult creeds into interesting stories that are easier to understand. It is also easier to empathize with the characters in literary works than with those of the Bible. As a result, fictional works can allow readers to compare their own experiences with the creeds and help them make new resolutions. Literary works and the Bible have a complementary relationship in Christian education. Christian educators should make the most use out of literary works as an important means to help students discover the Christian truth.

This paper aims to re-evaluate classical literature’s fundamental role in liberal education, and propose convergent education that incorporates more English novels. Modern curricula in American universities have systematized the use of classical literature, and since the 2000’s, classical literature has had a significant role in general education in Korea. However, with new focus in convergence education, interest in classical reading education has been dwindling. In order to analyze the possible benefits of classical reading education through English novels, this paper examines two Seoul Theological University courses. These courses show that novels have advantages over other classical literature or genres by being more approachable and interesting. Furthermore, novels are appropriate for convergence education as they deal with complex subjects from many different fields that converge together. English novels in particular are especially beneficial as they allow students to experience foreign cultures and broaden their horizons. For these reasons, we propose that English novels be more actively used in classical reading education.

This study aims to explore the origins and characteristics of honors programs offered by public universities in the United States. By examining how these programs aim to foster well-roundedness, this study tries to find guidance on how Korean universities should develop their honors programs. Traditionally, honors education in the U.S. has pursued well-roundedness rather than specialization in a particular field. Even with the advent of the 4th Industrial Revolution, well-rounded education through liberal arts education remains relevant. In fact, currently, liberal arts education can be considered even more important because it provides crucial skills such as critical thinking, clear communication skills, creativity, and leadership. Honors education can be considered an effective tool for developing these abilities. This study examines the University of Virginia's Echols Scholars Program, the University of Michigan’s LSA Honors Program, the University of Texas’s Plan II Program, and Rutgers University’s Honors College. Even though these programs show differences in implementation, they all offer a wide variety of courses that use seminars, facilitate close relationships between professor and student, and broaden the students' horizons through study abroad programs and community service. The honors programs in Korean universities tend to focus on specific goals such as employment or studying abroad rather than aiming for a well-rounded education. Moreover, while the programs offer enticing benefits to attract exceptional students, they are inadequate for further developing these students’ abilities. Therefore, honors programs should systematically incorporate liberal arts education in order to encourage well-roundedness.
