        남병철의 혼천의 연구 I

        In this paper we have reconstructed an armillary sphere based on the Method of an Armillary Sphere Making described in the Volume 1 of The Collection of Writings on the Scientific Instruments-Uigijipsol (儀器輯說, two volumes) edited in the 1850's by Nam Byong-Chul (南秉哲, 1817-1863) who was a famous Korean states-man-scientist. Nam achieved convenience and accuracy in the measurements of stellar positions in the manner of selective setting the equatorial, ecliptic and horizontal poles by adding a pole axis exchange ring called Jaigeukkwon (載極圈) between the Three Arrangers of Time and Four Displacements. We made use of 3-dimensional graphic software for modelling Nam's armillary sphere which consisted of five layers-eight rings. Results of simulation showed that the pole axis exchange ring functioned properly in setting the equatorial, ecliptic and horizontal coordinates simply by exchange of positions of specified holes on the ring. We ascertained that the invention of Jaigeukkwon solved inherent problems in the conventional Chinese armillary sphere in computation of real ecliptic coordinates. It was revealed that Nam Byong-Chul made great contributions in the East Asian history of armillary sphere making.

      • Antithrombotic and Anticoagulant Components of Plants

Proceedings of International Symposium on East-West Medicine, Seoul. Page 149-152, 1999.-There are many kinds of herbal drugs related to "Blood"(現血藥)in the Oriental Traditional Medicines. In order to investigate the antithrombotic and anticoagulant activities of blood related medicinal plants, we have utilized some screening methods such as intrinsic and extrinisic anticoagulant and antiplatelet activities, in vivo and in vitro. In the first study to screen the antithrombotic activity, we have measured the bleeding time(BT), the whole blood recalcification clotting time(WCT) and the plasma reclaification clotting time(PCT), successively, after orally administering an extract of a herbal medicine to rats. An intrinsic pathway anticoagulant drug should prolong all the three kinds of barometers, an extrinsic pathway anticoagulant one should prolong only BT, and antiplatelet one should prolong both BT and WCT. In the second study to isolate activ principles, we have measured in vitro the inhibitory activities on PCT, TF(tissue factor) and PA(platelet aggregation) for the intrinisic pathway anticoagulant, the extrinsic pathway anticoagulant and the antiplatelet activities, respectively. Recently, we have isolated weveral TF inhibitors(the extrinsic pathway anticoagulant) such as pubescenolic acid (20-epi-pomoli acid) from Ilex pubescens roots (毛冬靑), zivu-glycoside Ⅱ and pomoli acid from Sanguisorba officinalis roots (地楡), and compund I and X from Cinkgo biloba leaves(銀杏藥).Their anticoagulant activities were evaluated in vivo and in vitro on rat brain and lung tissue, respectively. Rat TF was measured by its procoagulant activity using one stage clotting assay method modified by us. Ziyu-glycoside Ⅱ, one of the most potent TF inhibitor was effective in vitro, but not in vivo. Thus, we prepared a derivative, named ZYM201, which strongly inhibitied the rat brain TF activity in vivo, Oral administration of ZYM201 enhanced atherosclerotic index in dietary, streptozo-tocin-induced, and alcoholic hyperlipidemic rats (unpublished data).

      • 학습동기와 자아개념 및 학교적응간의 관계 분석

        The purpose of this examination was to find out the relationship among secondary school learner's learning motivation, self-concept, and school-related adjustment. And in order to achieve the purpose of this examination sampled middle/high school learners in Seoul and other areas. The instruments used for the data collection were 'School learning motivation Scale」 (Kim. Yong-Rae, 2000), 'Self-concept Scale」 (Kim, Yong-Rae, 1995) and 'School -related adjustment Scale, (Kim. Yong-Rae, 2000). The collected data analysis were performed using SPSS/WIN(11.0) program, and analysis Mean score(M), Standard Deviation(SD), Zero Order Correlation(r) and Multi-Regression Analysis. All statistic values were tested by t-test and F-test in the significant level of p<.05. The major findings of this examination were as follows: First, there were mostly significant differences in school-related adjustment depending on the learning motivation, self-concept and the upper, middle and low levels of its sub-factors(p<.00l). Second, there was a significant positive correlation by .687 between learning motivation and school-related adjustment and there also was a significant positive correlation by .641 between self-concept and school-related adjustment. Third, learning motivation and self-concept were significantly positive influences on Korea secondary school learner's school-related adjustment respectively.

      • 만성중이염의 골도청력변화

        We have usually experienced bone conduction impairment in chronic otitis media, but it is unclear that raised bone conduction threshold is due to the reflection of cochlear dam- age and / or Carhart effect ( an artificial elevation of bone conduction threshold due to conductive defect ) or both. The purpose of this study is to verify the influence of the artificial elevation of the bone conduction threshold in chronic otitis media and to estimate Carhart effect. A total of 336 cases of tympanoplasty with unilateral chronic otitis media without any other causes of sensorineural hearing loss was studied. The average threshold levels of the bone conduction in diseased ears ranged from 18.5dB at 4kHz to 12.1dB at 250Hz The longer duration of the disease, the larger perforation size, the more severe damage of the middle ear structure and the presence of the cholesteatoma made bone conduction threshold increased. The postoperative thresholds of bone conduction were Improved in 36 cases (40.4%) of the 89 cases that underwent operation with type I tympanoplasty technique without electrie drilling. The degree of the maximal improvement was 14.3dB at 2000Hz and the minimum was 8.8dB at 250Hz. but these result did differ from a statistically significant degree. The result suggest that the bone conduction threshold in chronic otitis media is elevated artificially by conductive defect and improved by successful reconstructive surgery.

      • 후두 및 하인두 암종에서 p53단백 발현과 Espstein-Barr Virus 검출

        Background and Objectives : When p53 cancer suppressor gene, occurs gene deletion or point mutation, malignancy develops by loss of p53 function with abnormal p53 protein. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is the causative agent of certain type of lymphoma and undifferentiated nasopharyngeal carcinoma. However, the role of EBV as a causative factor in other head &eck tumors is not fully elucidated except nasopharyngeal carcinoma. This study, the author examined that p53 expression and detection rate of EBV correlate to development of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma(SCC) and play the possible role of prognostic indicators. Materials and Methods : Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue specimen from 32 cases of larynx and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas were studied by immunohistochemical staining for p53 and EBV. The results of analysis were compared with clinicopathological parameters. Results : p53 expression was 56.3% (18 cases) and the detection rate of EBV was 43.6% (14 cases) of 32 cases in laryngeal and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas. p53 expression was correlate with histologic grade (p<05) only. Detection of EBV was not correlate with clinicopathological parmeters. Conclusion : These results suggest p53 expression and the detection of EBV may be related with development of laryngeal and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. And, the expression of p53 protein can be used as a prognosticator in laryngeal and hypopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma under certain limitation.

      • 불규칙한 풍하중을 받는 현수교의 동력학적 해석

        Stochastic dynamic analysis of suspension bridge subject to random wind loads were carried out by mode-displacement method and mode-acceleration method. The computed dynamic characteristics are vertical and torsional vibrations of NAM-HAE BRIDGE. From numerical results, it was found that mode-acceleration method, which formulated in this paper, was more reliable and economical than mode-displacement method.

      • 시골 지역 청원에서 관측한 이산화황 농도의 변동 경향 특성

        We analyzed hourly integrated measurements of SO₂ concentrations obtained from a rural monitoring site located in Chongwon, Korea to investigate the characteristics of temporal variations during the period from 1994 to 2001. The annual, seasonal, and diumal variations of observed SO₂ concentrations are discussed and the characteristics of rural concentration variations are addressed associated with the effects of meteorological variables such as wind speed, wind directions and temperature. The results indicate that the annual variation of mean SO₂ concentrations show a significantly decreasing trend and the amplitude of monthly variations are also found to decrease with time. The diumal variations of SO₂ concentrations show maximum in the morning around at 0800-1000 LST and secondary maximum at around 1900-2100 LST, but the amplitude of diumal variation of SO₂ concentration has decreased. Although the urban and industrial cities such as Chongju are located in the eastern part of Khangnae, Chongwon, the analyzed result in association with wind directions shows that relatively lower SO₂ concentrations are found in the directions of ENE rather than WSW cases. This is implying the importance of topography located in south-north direction over the eastern Chongwon area where a blocking of air pollutants from the eastern emission area plays a certain role on the characteristics of SO₂ levels in Chongwon. On the other hand the SO₂ concentrations from the WSW-W area (i.e., Daejun and Chochiwon) are found to be relatively higher than from other directions due to more effective medium and large scale transport of pollutions from upstream regions.

      • NCAA 시스템 적용을 통한 한국대학스포츠 구조개선 방안

        The college sports is a final step among academic sports, and it is related closely to college athletic future. In Korea, college sport was founded a basic frame with growing a social interesting. Although Korea college sport have taken an important position in Korea sport, they did not achieve the mission that they are suppose to do such as unsystematical and unreasonal administration. This study was conducted to answer questions related to current problems in Korean College Sports (KCS) and to suggest a problem of reform for KCS based on research of the NCAA. The NCAA in the United States has provided a broad benefit for college athletes and is considered as a culture taking educational function. In conclusion, results from this study indicate that there are many differences between the NCAA and the KCS in related to the aspects of structure and function. There were also existed meaningful difference in cultural and environmental factor. To solve the problems the KCS is facing, this study has suggested developing devices for KCS, they were as following: 1. Organizing a new committee without public or government intervention. 2. Ensuring financial funds. 3. Changing athletic schedules to coincide with the school vacation.
