Objectives : Postoperative spinal wound infection continues to be a source of frustration for patients and surgeons, and can lead to significant postoperative difficulties. The rate of spinal wound infections has not decreased during the past decades despite the introduction of new antibiotics. Methods : Sixty-six patients, were reviewed, who developed postoperative spinal wound infection at Chosun University Hospital from January 1995 to August 2001. These patients (41 men, 25 women) were analyzed for preoperative risk factors, clinical presentation, treatment and outcome. These patients, with a mean age of 50.27 years (range 26-77), were treated for 45 deep and 7 superficial wound infections. Result : The incidence of postoperative spinal infections increases with use of spinal instrumentation (Noninstrumented cases 18, instrumented cases 48) and posterior surgical approach (posterior approach 54 cases, anterior approach 12 cases). The patients who developed postoperative spinal wound infection were analyzed for the infection risk factors (RF) identified in individual patients preoperatively. Staphylococcus aureus was the most frequent cultured organism (39 of 66 cases). Of 66 patients, nine had infections involved with multiple organisms and two cases revealed fungal infection due to Candida. 61 patients were infection free at a minimum of 6 months follow-up. Conclusion : Effective treatment of deep wound infection includes early diagnosis, prompt and aggressive surgical debridement, insertion of antibiotics-containing irrigation-suction systems for a mean of 6 days and parenteral antibiotics followed by oral antibiotics.

The acute and subacute toxicity of New Woohwangchungsimwon(NWCH) which was used l-muscone as substitutive material of musk were investigated in S.D. rats. In intraperitoneal acute toxicity test, rats(Sprague-Dawley, SPF) were injected intraperitoneally with dosages of 0, 540, 750, 1,070, 1,500 and 3,000 ㎎/㎏. Body weights were significantly decreased at 540 ㎎/㎏ dose group in both sexes and abnormal autopsy findings were founded in both sexes at all treated groups. Intraperitoneal LD_50 of NWCH was 812.3 ㎎/㎏ in male and 872.3 ㎎/㎏ in female rats. In the subacute toxicity study, NWCH was administrated orally to both sexes of rats for 4 weeks as several doses(0, 320, 800 and 2,000 ㎎/㎏). There were neither dead animals nor significant changes of body weights during the experimental period. In addition, no differences were found between control and treated groups in clinical signs, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemical analysis, and other findings. Above data strongly suggest that no observed adverse effect level of NWCH might be over 2,000 ㎎/㎏/day in this study.
흰쥐에서 염화비닐 폭로수준에 따른 소변내 thiodiglycolic acid 농도의 변화

Objectives : It is the objective of this research to identify the variation of thiodiglycolic acid(TdGA) in urine with vinyl chloride monamer(VCM) exposure levels through methylation. Methods : After rats were exposed to vinyl chloride monomer of 4 levels, 0㎎/㎥, 50㎎/㎥, 150㎎/㎥, 500㎎/㎥, respectively, of which urine was sampled in each sampling time of 0 hour, 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours, 16 hours, 36 hours, 48 hours. After urine had been methylated with diazomethane in the preliminary experiment and the peak of 146 m/z had been verified, the main experiment was done. Results : In the variation of TdGA with sampling times, concentration of TdGA increased rapidly in 4 hours and then decreased after 8 hours. When the variation of urinary TdGA concentration in urine according to exposure level of VGM was verified through Kruskal-Wallis statistical method at each sampling time, the significant increment with the exposure levels at 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours after exposure was clarified. Conclusion : TdGA concentration in urine with increment of VCM exposure level increased, especially significantly at 2 hours, 4 hours, 8 hours of sampling time.
소나무 재생버섯(Fomitopsis pinicola Jeseng) 다당류의 추출 특성

This study was conducted to investigate the extraction characteristics of the polysaccharide from Jeseng mushroom (Fomitopsis pinicola Jeseng). Yields of the polysaccharide extracted from powdered mushroom by autoclaving(120, 30 min) with water at different pH and salt concentration were 8.2~9.2% in pH 5~11, 4.7~5.5% in 1.5% salt solution, respectively. The yield by the 0.05~1.0 N KOH-extraction was ranged 3.45~13.20%, while that by HAS-extraction(homogenizing after KOH swelling) using 1~2.5 N KOH 73.6~78.4%. Content of carbohydrate, protein, lipid and ash of the crude polysaccharide extracted from fruits body and its cultured mycelium by method of water extraction, KOH extraction(0.005~1N) and HAS-extraction were ranged 86.5~92.6%, 2.3~13.1%, 0.1~4.2% and 0.1~1.7%, respectively. The polysaccharide were composed of 62.0~77.8 g/g of pentose, 138.0~187.8 g/g of hexose and 21.2~117.3 ㎎/g of protein. From these results, the polysaccharide extracted was supposed to be a protein-bound polysaccharide.

The contact forces between die components for the drawing of large size automotive panels introduce elastic deflections of the die components. Due to the deflections, the gap between blank holder and die varies locally resulting in nonuniform material flow. Such a nonuniform die gap usually requires correcting operation, so called die spotting, which is time consuming trial and error process. To reduce the die spotting time, the optimization of the blank holder bending deflection is needed. In this paper, we implemented an analysis procedure to predict the blank holder deflection. The analysis procedure and design of experiments techniques are applied to the optimization of balance block heights. The optimization results can be used as guidelines in actual die spotting process.
현미경을 이용한 디스크 제거술 후 추간판 변성 및 추간판 간격감소와 요통과의 관계 분석

Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the association of disc degeneration, disc space narrowing and postoperative low back pain in patients who underwent microscopic discectomy. Materials and Method: Sixty patients with lumbar disc herniation at L4-5 level who were treated by microscopic discectomy from February 2001 to November 2003 were investigated in this study. They were all male patients with an average age of 41.1 years old. The degrees of disc degeneration were measured through T2-weighted magnetic resonance image and divided into 4 groups. The disc heights were measured before and 1 year after the surgery using simple lateral X-ray. Then, we analyzed the relationship between disc degeneration, disc space narrowing and low back pain. Statistical analysis was performed with chi-square test. Results: Disc space narrowing 1 year after the surgery was severe in the Ⅳ and Ⅴ grade group whose lumbar disc degeneration was severe, and similarly, more severe postoperative back pain was reported in the Ⅳ and Ⅴ grade group (P<0.05). Conclusion: In patients who underwent microscopic discectomy as one level disc herniation, more lumbar disc degeneration showed disc space narrowing after surgery were significant, and more LBP was reported. Nevertheless, a long-term follow up is necessary.
실리카 도파로형 WDM 광 필터의 설계 및 해석에 관한 연구

본 논문에서는 Mach-Zehnder 간섭기로 구성된 1×4 필터와 성형결합기로 구성된 5×5 광도파로 격자 라우터를 BPM CAD TOOL을 이용하여 설계하였고 최적화 하였다. 마스크 레이아웃을 효율적으로 실현하기 위한 전체 도파구조를 설계하였다. BPM 전산모사를 통해 설계된 소자의 WDM 특성을 0.8 nm(100 ㎓)와 8.0 nm(1000 ㎓)의 채널간격에 대해서 살펴보았다. 설계된 소자는 두가지 채널간격 모두에 대하여 3.5dB 이내의 잉여손실, 0.5dB 이내의 균일성과 -22dB 이내의 누화(crosstalk)특성을 보임을 확인하였다. In this paper, we designed and optimized 1×4 WDM Filter composed of Mach-Zehnder Interferometer and 5×5 Waveguide Grating Router(WGR) composed of two star couplers. The overall guiding structure is designed to realize the mask layout efficiently. Through the BPM simulation, we demonstrated WDM characteristics of these devices with 0.8 nm and 8.0 nm channel-spacing. It is shown that the excess loss is less than 3.5dB, uniformity less than 0.5dB and the crosstalk smaller than –22 dB for both the channel spacings.
