      • Two new records of the genus Nola Leach, 1815 (Lepidoptera: Nolidae, Nolinae) from Laos

        The genus Nola (Nolidae, Nolinae) was established by Leach (1815), with the Noctua palliola Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775 (a junior subjective synonym of Phalaena cucullatella Linnaeus, 1758) from Vienna, Austria. Nola comprises over 200 species: Africa and western Palearctic approximately described 100 speices (Hacker et al., 2012); Oriental and Eastern Palearctic regions have over 100 species (László et al., 2010; Sasaki et al., 2011; Kononenko and Pinratana, 2013). Two species of the genus Nola Leach; Nola euryzonata (Hampson, 1900) and Nola lucidalis (Walker, 1865), reported for the first time in Laos. Illustrations of adults and genitalia of all the examined species are provided.

      • 대호 간척기 토양의 염농도별 밭작물의 염해 평가

        This study was carried out to obtain the basic data for selecting the applicable crops in reclaimed land during desalinization period. A pot experiment was conducted with 5 different electrical conductivities of the saturated extracts (ECe 1, 3, 9, 14, and 16 dS·m^(-1)) of soils taken from the Dae-Ho reclaimed tidal lands. Eight crops (Chinese cabbage, radish, tomato, red pepper, buckwheat, soybean, sesame, and green perilla) were grown for 37days. Plant height and number of leaves were surveyed on 2 and 4 weeks after seeding, and on harvest time (5 weeks). After harvest, dry weights of harvested crops were measured and soil chemical properties were analyzed. Emergence rates of crops were comparatively high except sesame. For sesame, there was no emergence at ECe over 3 dS·m^(-1). Growth and dry weight decreased significantly as increasing ECe. The ECe which decreased 50% of dry weight index were 14.2 dS·m^(-1) for radish, 11.4 dS·m^(-1) for Chinese cabbage, 10.2 dS·m^(-1) for tomato for red pepper, 8.9 dS·m^(-1) for buckwheat and green perilla, 8.6 dS·m^(-1) for soybean, and 8.9 dS·m^(-1) for tomato. At higher ECe that start the growth inhibition, increasing 1 dS·m^(-1) in ECe, 7.7, 6.5, 5.9, 5.6, 5.2, and 4.9% of dry weight decreased for buckwheat, green perilla, Chinese cabbage, radish, soybean, and tomato (red pepper), respectively. The critical value of ECe for crop survival except sesame was 15.4~23.1 dS·m^(-1).

        크롬(Ⅵ)의 체내 흡수와 소실속도에 관한 연구

        The CrO3 mostly used in plating. metal surface disposal, leather, cosmetic manufacturing, as an experiment material by repeatedly inhaling and exposure the male S.D. rats at a 0.00, 0.2., 0.50, 1.25 mg/㎡ concentration(particle size: 0.5-0.5 aerosol)6hours a day, 5day a week in 13weeks comparing with 2weeks, 8weeks of recovery group about the noxiousness of the experiment animal and the reduce scale of the CrO3 in the internal organ especially in blook and respiratory organ with the period of convalescent and clearance. The experiment results which we received are as follows. 1. In blood the RBC, HGB and HCT experiment, rats with 0.20, 0.50 mg/㎡ concentration showed that there were some decreases but not dependent. The kidneys absolute weight compared with control group was reduced intentionally(p〈0.05) and the lungs absolute weight compared with control group showed intentional increase(p〉0.05). 2. After the exposure of the experiment material, the whole blook, l\blood plasma and red blood cell in blood by (x): the period of convalescent, per (y); the decreasing of Cr concentration, was y=66.51 e -0.057x, y=67.2 e-0.101x, y=70.01 e-0.030 in 0.50 mg/㎡ exposure concentration by calculating the clearance coefficient of correlation, and the half life (day)was estimated 12.0, 6086, 23.0 each. 3, After the exposure of the experiment material, the experiment animals lung, liver and kidneys by(x); the period of convalescent, per (y); the decreasing of Cr conentration, was y=1808 e-0.00493x, y=12.02e-0.0297x, y=67.61 e-0.0292x in 0.50mg/㎡ exposure concentration by calculating the clearance coefficient of correlation, and the half life(day)was estimated 140.6, 23.3, 23.7, each, and including lung, liver with all of the experiment internal organs, the Cr clearance decreased as the exposure concentration increased.

      • Antioxidant activity in vitro and mucosal protective effect of Rhei Rhizoma on reflux esophagitis induced in rats

        Purpose Rhei Rhizoma (RR) is one of the herbal medicines traditionally used to treat diverse inflammatory diseases. The present study was undertaken to elucidate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of Rhei Rhizoma on experimental reflux esophagitis (RE) in rats. Methods The antioxidant activity of RR in vitro was measured in terms of radical scavenging capacity such as DPPH and ABTS. RE was produced by ligating both the pylorus and the transitional junction between the forestomach and the corpus. Rhei Rhizoma (125 and 250 mg/kg) were administered every day for 7 days, and its effect was estimated on comparison with RE control and normal rats. Results RR scavenged DPPH and ABTS effectively and IC50ofDPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity of RR were 4.8 μg/ml and 15.75 μg/ml. The administration of RR decreased the elevated serum ROS in RE control rats. The RE control rats exhibited the down-regulation of antioxidant-related proteins such as Nrf2 and HO-1expression levels in the esophagitis; however, the level in the RR-treated RE rats was significantly higher than that in the RE control rats. Moreover, RE control rats exhibited the up-regulation of the protein expression related to oxidative stress at the esophagitis, but RR administration significantly reduced the expression of inflammatory proteins through the MAPK-independent signaling pathways. The expression of inflammatory mediators and cytokines by NF-κB activation was modulated through blocking the degradation of IκBα. In addition, the oral administration of RR regulated the gastric mucosal damage in RE rats. Conclusion The administration of Rhei Rhizoma effectively ameliorates the inflammatory damage of esophageal mucosa through radical scavenging activity and the activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 pathway.

      • Protective Effects of Hyperoside against Carbon Tetrachloride-Induced Liver Damage in Mice

        <P>In this study, the hepatoprotective effects of hyperoside (<B>1</B>), a flavonoid glycoside isolated from <I>Artemisia capillaris</I>, have been examined against carbon tetrachloride (CCl<SUB>4</SUB>)-induced liver injury. Mice were treated intraperitoneally with vehicle or <B>1</B> (50, 100, and 200 mg·kg<SUP>−1</SUP>) 30 min before and 2 h after CCl<SUB>4</SUB> (20 μL·kg<SUP>−1</SUP>) injection. Levels of serum aminotransferases were increased 24 h after CCl<SUB>4</SUB> injection, and these increases were attenuated by <B>1</B>. Histological analysis showed that <B>1</B> prevented portal inflammation, centrizonal necrosis, and Kupffer cell hyperplasia. Lipid peroxidation was increased and hepatic glutathione content was decreased significantly after CCl<SUB>4</SUB> treatment, and these changes were reduced by administration of <B>1</B>. Protein and mRNA expression of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) and nuclear protein expression of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) significantly increased after CCl<SUB>4</SUB> injection. Compound <B>1</B> suppressed TNF-α, iNOS, and COX-2 protein and mRNA expression and augmented HO-1 protein and mRNA expression and Nrf2 nuclear protein expression. These results suggest that <B>1</B> has protective effects against CCl<SUB>4</SUB>-induced acute liver injury, and this protection is likely due to enhancement of the antioxidative defense system and suppression of the inflammatory response.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/jnprdf/2011/jnprdf.2011.74.issue-5/np200001x/production/images/medium/np-2011-00001x_0006.gif'></P>

        Protective Effect of Baicalin Against Carbon Tetrachloride–Induced Acute Hepatic Injury in Mice

        <P>This study examined the effects of baicalin, a bioactive flavonoid isolated from <I>Scutellariae Radix</I>, on carbon tetrachloride (CCl<SUB>4</SUB>)-induced liver injury. Mice were treated intraperitoneally with 0.5 ml/kg CCl<SUB>4</SUB> and different groups of animals received 25, 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg baicalin. At 24 h after the CCl<SUB>4</SUB> treatment, the level of serum aminotransferases and lipid peroxidation was significantly elevated, whereas the hepatic glutathione content was decreased. These changes were attenuated by baicalin. The histological studies showed that baicalin inhibited the portal inflammation, centrizonal necrosis, and Kupffer cell hyperplasia, which are the three most common characteristics of CCl<SUB>4</SUB>-induced liver damage. The serum level and mRNA expression of tumor necrosis factor-α were markedly increased by the CCl<SUB>4</SUB> treatment but suppressed by baicalin. The mRNA and protein expression levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase and heme oxygenase-1 increased significantly at 24 h after the CCl<SUB>4</SUB> treatment. Baicalin attenuated the increase in the protein and gene expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase but augmented the increase in those of heme oxygenase-1. These findings suggest that baicalin protects hepatocytes from the oxidative damage caused by CCl<SUB>4</SUB>, and this protection is likely due to the induction of HO-1 expression and the inhibition of the proinflammatory mediators.</P>

        To investigate the effect of high dose irradiation on the mechanical properties. dental acrylic resin specimens were irradiated and the Vickers hardness number(VHN) and the 3-point flexure strength(FS) were measured before and after irradiation. Five kinds of acrylic resins were studied. Two(VRS. PS2) were heat cured denture base resins. one(VSC) was chemically cured denture base resin and the other two(ORJ, VOP) were orthodontic resins. The acrylic resin specimens were made according to the manufacturer's instructions and were finally polished with Microcloth (Buehler). Among ten specimens of each material. five specimens were irraditated with 100 Gy using a linear accelerator (Mitsubishi 6 MV), and the others were not. The specimens were immersed in 37℃ D.W. for 48 hours before testing. Each specimens the VHN was measured 10 times. Their FS was measured with an universal testing machine (Instron 4302, England), with a cross-head speed of 5 mm/min. The VHNs of heat cured resins were 21.52∼25.55 kg/㎟ before irradiation and 19.93∼26.58 kg/㎟ after irradiation. Those of chemically cured resins were 11.28∼16.6kg/㎟ before irradiation and 11.3∼14.3 kg/㎟ after irradiation. The VHNs of heat cured acrylic resins were significantly higher than those of chemically cured resins were significantly higher than those of chemically cured resins before and after irradiation(p<0.05). VHN of VRS was significantly increased after irradiation, and those of VOP and PS2 were significantly decreased after irradiation (p<0.05). The FS of resins studied were 6.7∼8.0 kg/㎟ before irradiation and 6.5∼8.4 kg/㎟ after irradiation. The FS of VSC and VRS increased after irradiation and those of VOP, ORJ and PS2 decreased after irradiation, but the results were not statistically significant. Before irradiation, the FS of heat cured resins were somewhat higher than those of chemically cured resin, but not statistically significant, and after irradiation the FS of heat cured resins were significantly higher than those of orthodontic resins. In conclusion. high dose irradiation did not result in consistent changes in mechanical properties.
