An antibacterial component was isolated from the roots of evening primrose (Oenothera odorata Jacquin). The component was purified by repeated preparative TLC of the chloroform-extract with solvent system of toluene(7): ethyl acetate(4) : formic acid(O.8). NMR spectrum indicated that it is a steroid compound containing radical(-C=C-C=0) and aromatic structures. Its antibacterial activity against strains of the genus Streptococcus was relatively high, the MIC value was 50 according to the Hoechst Manual-345, as compared with the other genera such as Staphylococcus and Escherichia.
Morin Protects Acute Liver Damage by Carbon Tetrachloride ($CCl_4$) in Rat

The purpose of this study was to investigate possible beneficial effects of morin on $CCl_4$-induced acute hepatotoxicity in rats. Rats received a single dose of $CCl_4$ ($150{\mu}L$/100 g 1:1 in corn oil). Morin treatment (20 mg/kg) was given at 48, 24, and 2 h before $CCl_4$ administration. $CCl_4$ challenge elevated serum alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST), and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels, but these effects were prevented by the pretreatment of rats with morin. To identify the mechanism of protective activity of morin in $CCl_4$-induced hepatotoxicity in rats, we investigated expressions of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-$\alpha$), interleukin-$1{\beta}$ (IL-$1{\beta}$), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and inducible nitric oxide (iNOS). The expressions of TNF-$\alpha$, IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6, and iNOS were increased by $CCl_4$ treatment and increased expressions of those were decreased by morin. These findings suggest that morin prevents acute liver damage by inhibiting the production of TNF-$\alpha$, IL-$1{\beta}$, IL-6, and iNOS.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study compares the differences in proteomes expressed in tuberous roots of a light orange-fleshed sweetpotato (<I>Ipomoea batatas</I> (L.) Lam. cultivar Yulmi) and a purple-fleshed sweetpotato cultivar (Shinjami). More than 370 protein spots were reproducibly detected by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis, in which 35 spots were up-regulated (Yulmi vs. Shinjami) or uniquely expressed (only Yulmi or Shinjami) in either of the two cultivars. Of these 35 protein spots, 23 were expressed in Yulmi and 12 were expressed in Shinjami. These protein spots were analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry and electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Fifteen proteins in Yulmi and eight proteins in Shinjami were identified from the up-regulated (Yulmi vs. Shinjami) or uniquely expressed (only Yulmi or Shinjami) proteins, respectively. In Yulmi, α-amylase and isomerase precursor–like protein were uniquely expressed or up-regulated and activities of α-amylase, monodehydroascorbate reductase, and dehydroascorbate reductase were higher than in Shinjami. In Shinjami, peroxidase precursor and aldo–keto reductase were uniquely expressed or up-regulated and peroxidase and aldo–keto reductase activities were higher than in Yulmi. PSG-RGH7 uniquely expressed only in Shinjami and the cultivar was evaluated more resistant than Yulmi against the root-knot nematode, <I>Meloidogyne incognita</I> (Kofold and White, 1919) Chitwood 1949 on the basis of shoot and root growth. Egg mass formation was 14.9-fold less in Shinjami than in Yulmi. These results provide important clues that can provide a foundation for sweetpotato proteomics and lead to the characterization of the physiological function of differentially expressed proteins.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P>► Proteomics in tuberous roots of two sweetpotato cultivars were compared. ► Over 370 protein spots were reproducibly detected by 2-dimensional electrophoresis. ► Thirty five spots were differentially expressed in either of the two cultivars. ► This study provides new insights to characterize differentially expressed proteins.</P>

Background/Aims: Menetrier's disease is a poorly defined condition that is f unknown origin, characterized by giant folds in the stomach. The histoiogic fentures are foveolar hyperplasia and cystic dilatation of the gland. We presented the characteristic findings of Menetirer's disease in Korea with a review of literatures to understand the Menetirer's disease more precisely, Methods: The sixteen cases of Menetrier's disease was reported in Korea. We analyzed their age, sex, symptoms, signs, laboratory findings and treatments, retrospectively, Results: The average age was 46 years. There were 11 men and 4 women. The most common symptom was epigastric pain (94%). The most common sign were epigastric tenderness (69%) and pretibial pitting edema (63%). Patients were often associated with the hypoalbuminemia (73%). All patients showed hypertrophic folds on either gastrofiberscopy or upper gastrointestinal series, All patients showed foveolar hyperplasia histologically. Three patients were operated to control a massive upper gastrointesinal bleeding. Two patients were operated to control the intractable edema. Two patients were operated to exclude gastrie malignancy, Conclusions: Menetrier's disease showed broad clinical features such as epigastric pain, hypoalbuminemia, massive hematemesis and mimicking gastric malignancy. The giant gastric folds and foveolar hyperplasia were the most commom and important findings in the Menetrier's disease.

<P>Sophorae Radix (<I>Sophora flavescens </I>Aiton) has long been used in traditional medicine in East Asia due to the various biological activities of its secondary metabolites. Endogenous contents of phenolic compounds (phenolic acid, flavonol, and isoflavone) and the main bioactive compounds of Sophorae Radix were analyzed based on the qualitative HPLC analysis and evaluated in different organs and at different developmental stages. In total, 11 compounds were detected, and the composition of the roots and aerial parts (leaves, stems, and flowers) was significantly different. trans-Cinnamic acid and<I> p</I>-coumaric acid were observed only in the aerial parts. Large amounts of rutin and maackiain were detected in the roots. Four phenolic acid compounds (benzoic acid, caffeic acid, ferulic acid, and chlorogenic acid) and four flavonol compounds (kaempferol, catechin hydrate, epicatechin, and rutin) were higher in aerial parts than in roots. To identify putative genes involved in phenolic compounds biosynthesis, a total of 41 transcripts were investigated. Expression patterns of these selected genes, as well as the multiple isoforms for the genes, varied by organ and developmental stage, implying that they are involved in the biosynthesis of various phenolic compounds both spatially and temporally.</P>

Since the 1990`s, golf has become even more popular and people have came to see it from a different viewpoint than in the past. Therefore, the time has come for country clubs to set up a service system to meet customers` expectations for golfers. If the employees in Golf & Country Clubs(CC)are dissatisfied with their jobs, customers will be dissatisfied as well. Therefore, this study analyzes job satisfaction and reasons for turnover. This study analyzes how the main two factors causing stress at work, role conflict and overloaded responsibilities, affect job satisfaction and subsequent turnover. Additionally, considering the tasks and the work environment of employees in country clubs, I tested job satisfaction by dividing it into the following categories: work satisfaction, compensation and promotion. Samples for the empirical analysis were selected among the employees working at the country clubs located in the outskirts of Seoul and Gangwondo. The Structural Equation Model(SEM) analysis and the statistical package program of SPSS. 12.0 and AMOS 5.0 are used. The study has importance for the following reasons: First, job satisfaction was examined as factors divided into work satisfaction, compensation satisfaction and promotion satisfaction. Second, tt was found that compensation satisfaction serves as a antecedent variable (predictor) of work satisfaction. Third, turnover intention was tested through path analysis. In the process of this path analysis, it was concluded that the stress from overloaded responsibilities is the most direct factor affecting turnover intention. I believe this research can be used as data for strategic planning to popularize golf and for operating competitive, high-end country clubs.

In an attempt to evaluate the content and process of clinical practice in the baccalaureate nursing curriculum of Korea University and to identify perceived obstacles of clinical practice and to propose an innovative principle for the promotion of clinical nursing education program, a descriptive research was designed and carried out. Data were obtained from 41 senior nursing students of Korea university, 50 nurse-graduates of Korea University within 2 years and have worked as staff nurses in Korea University Hospitals, and 44 head nurses and supervisers of Korea University hospitals dually assigned to carry out clinical instructions for nursing students by Korea University. By 35-item, 5-point Likert opinionaire, developed by the researchers, data were gathered from May 15 to 31, 1996. Frequency, percentage, mean, stanard deviation were calculated, Factor-analysis, ANOVA and Duncan's multiple range test by pc-SAS program were carried out. Results are as follows: 1. By the Varimax rotation factor analysis of 35 items related to the evaluation of clinical practice of nursing students revealed to be divided into 3 domains namely educational environment of clinical settings, the contents of clinical practicum, and professors. The level of evaluation score on 35-item was comparatively low (mean=2.86, ranging 1-5) ; educational environment of clinical settings (mean=2.65), professors (mean=2.95) and content of clinical practicum (mean=3.O4) respectively. 2. The level of evaluation scores of 3 domains between 3 groups; nursing students, staff nurses and clinical instructors showed statistically significant differences (F=32.18, P=.001, F=15.10, P=.001, F4.76, P=.05). Duncan's multiful range test revealed that the nursing students and the staff nurses revealed the significantly lower scores than clinical instuctors in all 3 domains of evaluation. 3. The analysis of rank order of the perceived obstacles and the proposed priority of tasks to overcome obstacles; 'the shortage of nurse manpower in clinical settings' revealed to be the highest in the rank of obstacles, and the innovative clinical teaching system by 'full-time clinical instructors stationed in specific clinical settings be adopted' revealed the highest in the rank order.
