This study was conducted to investigate the leaching characteristics of herbicide butachlor in paddy soil using undisturbed lysimeter. Soil horizons of sandy loam, loam, and silty clay loam lysimeter were composed of 6, 6, and 5, and clay contents were ranged from 53.1-63.2, 40.2-47.7, and 32.6-39.2 %, respectively. Bulk densities of each lysimeter were 1.38, 1.30, and 1.35 Mg/m3, respectively. Butachlor was treated to each lysimeter at 15 days after rice planting, and water was supplied according to rice cultivation method. Pore volumes of sandy loam, loam, and silty clay loam lysimeter were calculated to 718.87, 764.15, and 735.85 L, and pore volume numbers of supplied water for rice cultivation were 0.98, 1.08, and 0.24, respectively. Movement of butachlor in each lysimeter was investigated through the residue of it in 30, 55, 85, and 125 cm soil water from topsoil and leaching water. Gas chromatography (GC) was used for butachlor analysis in water sample. Recovery and limit of quantitation (LOQ) of butachlor in water were 88.1-104.6% and 3 μg/L. Changes of moisture tension, humidity, and temperature in sandy loam, loam, and silty clay loam lysimeter was not significantly different during experiment period. Weight of silty clay loam lysimeter was higher than other lysimeter because of less leaching. Leaching volume of sandy loam, loam, and silty clay loam lysimeter were 705.9, 828.7, and 174.5 L, respectively. Total leaching content of butachlor (treatment content 770.57 mg) during experiment period in sandy loam, loam, and silty clay loam lysimeter were 0.01, 0, and 0.07 mg, respectively. These results showed that the movement of butachlor in sandy loam, loam, and silty clay loam paddy soil was low.

BACKGROUND: Residual organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are designated as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by Stockholm Convention because they bioaccumulate through the food web, and pose a risk of causing adverse effect to human health and the environment. Apple and pear is economic crop in agriculture, and its cultivation area and yield has been increased. Therefore, we tried to investigate the OCPs residue in apple and pear orchard soils and fruits. METHODS AND RESULTS: Extraction and clean‐up method were developed using the modified QuEChERS method for residual organochlorine pesticides (ROCPs) in apple and pear orchard soil and fruits. Recovery and limit of quantitation (LOQ) of ROCPs in soil and fruits were 75.4‐101.4 and 76.9‐93.4%, 0.03‐0.21 and 0.6‐1.2 μg/kg, respectively. Detected ROCPs in apple and pear orchard soil was 2,4‐ DDT, 4,4‐DDD, 4,4‐DDE, 4,4‐DDT, and endosulfan sulfate, the residues were 2.2, 1.9‐48.0, 1.3‐84.1, 90.6‐863.1, and 11.3‐239.0 μg/kg, respectively. But five pesticides in all fruit samples were not detected. CONCLUSION: These results showed that ROCPs residues in apple and pear orchard soil had no effect on safety of agricultural products.

Agricultural soils near or around industrial complexes can contain a certain amount of heavy metals that readily enter the food chain and negatively affect human health. Therefore, we conducted the study to investigate the distribution of selected heavy metals, including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and zinc (Zn), in farm-land soils around fifteen industrial complexes in the southwestern provinces, Korea. The concentrations of heavy metals in the soil samples were determined by the pseudo-total aqua regia (3 HCl : 1 HNO3) digestion procedure. The heavy metal concentrations in most soils examined did not exceed the levels of Soil Contamination Warning Standard (SCWS) for agricultural lands (Region 1) presented in Soil Environment Conservation Law (SECL) established by Ministry of Environment (MOE), Korea. However, only one sampling site showed higher As amount (27.1 mg kg-1) than the SCWS level of As (25 mg kg-1). Pollution index (PI) for heavy metals did not exceed 1.0. The PI values were significantly positively correlated (p < 0.01) with the heavy metal concentrations. In particular, the values of correlation coefficient between the Cd and Pb concentrations and the PI values were higher than those estimated from other combinations, and thus the amounts of Cd and Pb in the agricultural soils highly affected the PI values for the heavy metals.
