Comparison of Two PCR Assays for Trichomonas vaginalis

PCR is known to be the most sensitive method for diagnosing Trichomonas vaginalis infections. This study aimed to compare the sensitivity of a PCR assay for trichomoniasis (HY-PCR) developed in Hanyang University with the use of a Seeplex Ace Detection Kit®, using urine collected from four Korean men with prostatic disease. Overall, HY-PCR was more sensitive than the Seeplex Kit. The use of Chelex 100 is recommended for DNA isolation in order to increase the sensitivity of the PCR test.
One-dimensional Variable-mass Dirac Equation and Spinor slow Llght

The one-dimensional variable-mass Dirac equation is connected to various models used throughout many branches of physics. An analog simulation of the equation in a spinor slow light system allows experimental realizations of such models. This work concentrates on an interesting model of historical importance that led to a prediction of charge fractionalization, which in turn occurs due to the presence of a topologically protected zero-energy mode. After describing how the model can be realized in a spinor slow light system, the current work explains how the presence of the zero-energy mode can be verified from the dynamics of the spinor slow light.

Background: Inhaled corticosteroids (CSs) are the most essential medication for asthma control. Many reports suggest that the usage of ICSs improves not only the control of asthma symptoms but also prevents exacerbation. We investigated whether increases in ICS prescriptions are associated with decreases in asthma exacerbation in the clinical practice setting. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the database of adult asthma patients who had visited a tertiary referral hospital, the Asan Medical Center between January 2000 and December 2009. The number of emergency department (ED) visits, admissions, intensive care unit (ICU) care, deaths, and ICS prescriptions were analyzed to evaluate the time trend of asthma exacerbation as a function of the ICS prescription rate during the ten years. Results: The numbers of ED visits, admissions, and episodes of ICU care decreased during the ten years (p<0.001, p=0.033, p=0.001, respectively) while the number of ICS prescriptions increased (p<0.001). We found a correlation between the number of ICS prescriptions and the number of ED visits, admissions, or ICU care. For these outcomes, the correlation coefficients were r=-0.952, p<0.001; r=-0.673, p=0.033; r=-0.948, p<0.001, respectively. Conclusion: The number of ICS prescriptions increased during the past ten years while the number of asthma exacerbations decreased. Our results also showed a negative correlation between the ICS prescription rate and asthma exacerbation in the clinical practice setting. In other words, an increase in ICS prescription may be a major cause of a decrease in asthma exacerbations.
군용 중장비 안전 수송을 위한 지능형 차량 안전 시스템 개발

The wide trailer is commonly used in military to transport equipments heavy and large, such as tanks, armoured vehicles, and mobile gunneries. But it has vulnerability of causing traffic accidents by bumping or colliding with another car in adjacent lane due to its width which is over its own lane. Moreover, a careless driver also increase possibility of car accidents on the road. In this paper, the recognition system of lane and vehicle headway direction is developed to detect the possible collision and warn the driver to prevent a fatal accident. First of all, Sobel and Kalman filters were used to extract the border of driving lane from the video images supplied by the CCD camera attached with the vehicle and it's completed to detect driving lane with regression analysis. After, the vehicle headway direction is recognized by using neural network scheme with the extracted parameters of the detected driving lane feature and neighborhood vehicles. The practical experiments for the developed system are also carried out in the real traffic road of Seoul city area and the results show us the more than 90% accuracy in recognizing the driving direction and neighborhood vehicles.
Prevalence of Allergic Diseases and Risk Factors of Wheezing in Korean Military Personnel

The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of asthma, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis, as well as the risk factors of wheezing among young adults in the Korean military. Young military conscripts in five areas completed a modified International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaire. For subjects with current wheeze in one sample area, baseline spirometry and bronchodilator response were measured. For subjects without a significant response to bronchodilator (improvement in FEV1 of more than 200 mL and 12%), methacholine challenge tests (MCT) were also performed. Of 3,359 subjects that completed the questionnaire, 354 (10.5%) had current wheeze, 471 (14.0%) had current allergic rhinitis, and 326 (9.7%) had current eczema. Current wheeze was associated with family history of allergic disease, overweight, current smoking, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis. Of 36 subjects with current wheeze who underwent PFT with or without MCT in the Anyang area, 24 (66.7%) were confirmed to have current asthma. In conclusion, the prevalence of allergic disease in young adults of Korean military is not low, and the risk factors of wheezing include family history of allergic disease, overweight, current smoking, allergic rhinitis, and atopic dermatitis.
피복성분에 의한 수중용접봉의 아크 안정성 개선에 관한 실험연구

Underwater wet bead-on-plate welds were experimentally performed on 11㎜ thick SS400 steel plate as base metal by using six different types of flux coated electrodes of 3.2㎜ diameter. Two kinds of different flux coated wet arc electrodes (UW-1, UW-2) were individually designed flux materials, three kinds of the electrodes (E4301, E4311, E4313) were terrestrial electrodes and the another one (TN20) was an imported underwater wet welding electrode. As results, the individually designed flux coated underwater electrode, UW-2 and TN20 had a good starting and the excellent arc stability compared with other electrodes. No significant difference of bead appearance could be detected, but the slag detachability of TN20 electrodes was relatively undesirable. By rapid cooling rate, the hardness value and the portion of martensite of HAZ were increased, but it was considerably maintain stable for TN20 and UW-2 electrodes. The individually designed flux coated electrode, UW-2 could be used in practice for underwater bead welds.
