The purpose of this thesis is to examine historical thinking from an epistemological point of view and present its implications for history education. The studies of historical thinking emerged in connection with the new social studies movement whose purpose was to develop a learner-centered curriculum that could help students develop critical thinking skills. And the educational philosophy that was behind its advent was constructivism. Jerome Bruner’s theory, in particular, exerted heavy influence on history education researchers. According to him, school curriculums should focus on making students grasp the structures of the disciplines they study as well as the collective and constitutive nature of knowledge. And history education researchers, influenced by the sort of theory espoused by scholars like Bruner, argued that history education reflect the structure of history as a discipline.
It was against this backdrop that history education researchers began to take an interest in historical thinking. In the 1970s, the studies of historical thinking gradually took definite shape. Early studies centered around the conceptual division between primary substantial concepts and secondary structural concepts. And Sam Wineburg made a significant contribution to the studies of historical thinking with his research conducted in the 1990s. Most of his predecessors tried to define historical thinking relying on the works by historians. On the other hand, Wineburg conducted a series of experiments on historians to reveal the thinking processes they went through as making sense of historical materials. Furthermore, he was arguably the first researcher in history education to use cognitive science to solve the critical issues of history education.
The research of historical thinking went hand in hand with the recognition of the temporary and diverse nature of historical interpretation and the acceptance of the notion of domain specificity. And researchers have been trying to develop instructional models that encourage students to analyze historical materials by performing historical thinking. The focus of the existing studies has been mainly on both explaining the necessity to shift from the traditional model whose primary concern was to transmit standard historical knowledge to a form of history education where students construct interpretations in their own ways with the help of historical thinking and presenting specific methods to materialize such an education. What this thesis mainly deals with is the issues that are bound to arise after the completion of this ‘shift.’ That is, this paper as a whole is an attempt to identify and critically examine the problems, both theoretical and practical, a constructivist model of history education that is founded upon notions like temporality and diversity must face.
One of the critical issues from an epistemological point of view is to set the bounds of diversity in interpretation. Should we accept any interpretation under the name of diversity? Should someone want to exclude certain interpretations as unjustified, the person would have to adopt certain criteria and be able to offer an appropriate epistemological defense of them. Researchers who accepted the temporal and diverse nature of historical interpretation tend to emphasize critical reading and writing in history education. But the problem here is that they are acts predicated upon the existence of a certain set of standards. In this situation, teachers should be able to delineate the standards for critical reading and writing and explain why the standards are worthy adopting from an epistemic point of view. As a result, a constructivist teaching cannot escape from the issue of establishing criteria for epistemic justification.
This thesis approached this issue from a pragmatist/reliabilist perspective. According to this position, history inquiry is ‘an epistemic practice that operates under the reliabilist presupposition that beliefs formed through the processes, whose pragmatic utility has been already proven in problem solving situations, may be taken to be rationally justified.’ What historians investigate is an event or a set of events that had already terminated in the past. They may construct interpretations of the past. However, they have no direct access to the past itself. Nor are they capable of obtaining independent criteria for determining whether an interpretation actually corresponds to the part of the past it is intended to depict. Thus, all historical interpretations are the same in the sense that there is no way to find out if they accurately reflect the past.
Be that as it may, there are differences among the thinking processes that produce interpretations about the past. For instance, sourcing, corroboration, and contextualization, which are known to be the key elements of historical thinking, are thinking processes we employ to solve everyday problems. We use them in order to acquire necessary information on the internet. Contextualization in particular constitutes an integral part of criminal behavior analysis. On the other hand, intentionally ignoring evidence, simple imagination, and wishful thinking cannot consistently produce useful outcomes in everyday situations. Therefore, one may say that the rationality underlying the historian’s thinking is part of our overall rationality with which we manage to solve everyday problems.
This of course does not mean that interpretations arrived at via historical thinking are infallible and unchangeable. Historical thinking is one of the many cognitive activities humans engage. Therefore, historical thinking can be conducted only in a specific environment shaped bysocial factors. There are many factors that influence that environment. Accessible primary sources and available analytical concepts are such factors. These are neither permanent nor naturally given to humans. They are social products and change as time goes by. Therefore, the condition under which historical thinking is performed can always change, which means that the results obtained through that thinking can vary. This makes it imperative that we pay attention to the concrete condition where historical thinking is performed and be aware of its fallibility. This is why the ability of reflecting upon one’s own historical thinking process, or, simply put, metacognition, is essential part of historical thinking.
Metacognition reveals that interpretations produced through historical thinking are fallible and changeable. That is, it exposes the epistemic limits of historical thinking. Therefore, metacognition contains a very strong skeptical element when seen from an epistemic point of view. This is where we need to connect the metacognition about historical thinking with its everyday utility. That historical thinking is useful in everyday life means that it is actually effective in solving everyday problems.
Human life is nothing but a series of problem solving processes. And historical thinking is one of these processes. For this reason, historical thinking shares the rationality of everyday problem solving. To deny the epistemic value of historical thinking is to deny the overall rationality of our life. The idea of historical thinking as a useful thinking process in everyday life plays a specific epistemic role, namely eliminating the danger of falling into skepticism created by the fallibility of historical thinking. In the final analysis, we must accept the rationality of the methods and principles shared by historians, for they are connected to the rationality of our everyday life. Thus, one may say that everyday utility is conceptually inseparable from the metacognitive ability.
There are practical problems a constructivist approach to history education founded upon the temporal and diverse nature of historical interpretation must solve as well. The activities in the existing studies were primarily focused on helping students to acquire historical thinking skills like sourcing, corroboration, and contextualization. The purpose of this kind of activities is to make students produce the ‘correct’ interpretation of the given text by performing historical thinking. As a result, students rarely have the chance to reflect on their own historical thinking in these activities. In other words, they are hardly led to critically reexamine their own thinking processes.
In order to solve this problem, this study attempted to devise instructional designs that allow teachers to implement metacognitive strategies relating to historical thinking in their classrooms. More specifically, this study has presented problem solving activities where students are led to engage metacognition. The activities are grouped into two sets; one is created based on the fallibility of historical thinking; the other is focused on its everyday utility. The problem solving activities based on the fallibility of historical thinking must satisfy the following three conditions. First, students must engage historical thinking in the process of the solving the presented problems. Second, students must be able to produce a rationally grounded conclusion by performing historical thinking. Lastly, the conclusion arrived at through historical thinking must change as new information is added to the existing one. These activities will offer students the opportunity to experience firsthand that the conclusion they reach via historical thinking may change as the situation under which it is carried out changes.
The second set of problem solving activities consists of two stages, the first of which is everyday problem solving activities, and the second of which is historical problem solving ones. The first stage has three purposes. First, the activities must offer students opportunities to perform historical thinking. Second, students must be able to develop a conceptual understanding of historical thinking. Lastly, students must realize that historical thinking is employed to solve everyday problems as well. In order to achieve these goals, the most important thing is to choose appropriate everyday problems for the activities. Students encounter a variety of problems in everyday life. But the problems selected for the activities must be not only interesting to them but also educationally meaningful. In addition to that, historical thinking must be engaged in the process of solving them. Students will be able to understand the methodological connection between everyday problem and historical problem solving.
The existing studies have made us realize the necessity to abandon the traditional model for history education that taught history as a grand narrative and move towards adopting a constructivist approach based on the temporal and diverse nature of historical interpretation. This thesis is standing upon these achievements by the previous researchers. In this study, I have tried to identify the issues such an approach is bound to encounter and present solutions, both theoretical and practical, to them. In doing so, I have identified metacognition predicated upon the notion of everyday utility as an integral part of historical thinking. I hope that further studies on the history education after the ‘diversity turn’ will ensue.
