This account is related to the general observation that the colonial remnants are still lingering in the intellectual discourses in the East Asia. It should be noted that it has been more than a century since the modern historical science of the West was introduced in the East Asian countries(Japan, China and Korea). This account is to review a problematic situation that, in this time of post-colonial era, historical studies as well as the conception of ‘world history’ are still under the strong influence of so-called ‘eurocentric’ view of historical development.
First, it takes a glance at the formation of the eurocentric conception of history in the West, and indicates that the two debatable conceptions, ‘modernization,’ and ‘unilateral progress in history,’ are most problematic in the process of receiving the Western historical science in the East Asia. The core of the eurocentric view of history is ‘the modernization paradigm’ which enables to construct ‘the world history’ as a coherent narrative. Second, it emphasizes that the eurocentrism has been ‘internalized’ by the East Asian historians in the process of its reception, voluntarily rather than being forced in the course of the imperialistic intrusions by the West into the East. It should be also noted that the criticisms against the eurocentrism was raised first, not by the colonial intellectuals but by those within the West. Those criticisms are closely related to the various kinds of ‘post-discourses,’ namely, post-structualism, post-colonialism, post-modernism and so on. Last, it indicates that a new ‘universal history’ overcoming the shortcomings of eurocentric world history is still difficult to write for many reasons. The pre-requisite for an alternative world history is the comparative studies of historiography in the diverse cultural contexts.
In conclusion, in order to make possible to overcome the selfconcentrated conception of eurocentric view of history, a thorough examination and criticisms are needed over the reception and transformation of the eurocentrism by the East Asian historical science during the last 100 years and more.
