The purpose of this study was to compare the microhardness and the fluoride content of enamel and dentin around fluoride- or non fluoride-containing restorations. Forty extracted human teeth were used and prepared cervical cavities on proximal surface. Experimental teeth were divided into five groups. Group 1 : Prime & Bond NT and Z100. Group 2 : Prime & Bond NT and F2000. Group 3 : Scotchbond Multi-Purpose and Z100. Group 4 : Scothcbond Multi-purpose and F2000. Group 5 : Fuji II LC. The cavities were filled with dentin adhesives and restorative materials. After each tooth was bisected, one half was tested microhardness and the other half was analyzed the fluoride at the enamel and dentin by an EPMA-WDX device. The results were as follows: 1. There was no statistical difference among the microhardness of enamel surface in all group. 2. The microhardness at dentin of 100 ㎛ point in Group 2 and 20 ㎛ point in Group 4 was lower than that of normal dentin (p>0.05) 3. There was no statistical difference among the fluoride content of enamel surface in all group. 4. The fluoride content at the dentin of 30 ㎛ point in Group 2 and 5 were higher than those at 100 ㎛ and 200 ㎛ point in Group 2 and normal dentin (p<0.05) 5. At the dentin of 30 ㎛ point, Group 2 showed higher fluoride content than Group 1 and 3, and Group 5 showed higher fluoride content than other groups.

Background: Onychomycosis, especially toenail onychomycosis has become one of the common fungal infection and has historically been regarded as a cosmetic rather than medical problem by many patients, even by physicians. Recently, however, there are several reports that is a refractory disease which may cause a deleterious effect on patiets quality of life (QOL). Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of toenail onychomycosis on QOL in Korea and to assess the chandes of QOL after treatment. Methods: Total 1004 patients with toenail onychomycosis which was confirmed by clinical findings and KOH preparation were were enrolled at 47 dermatologic centers in Korea, and interviewed with standardized QOL questionnaire before and after sytemic antifungal treatment. Responses to the questionnaire were scored by 5-point scale (1∼4) and averaged, and were analyzed for 5 dimensions of emotional impact, social impact, symptorn and functional impact, patients views concerning treatment, and relationship with doctor. Results: 1. Before and after treatment, the most serious impact was emotional dimension showing 1.90 and 1.30 in average score (AS), and social (AS: 1.14 and 0.83) and symptom and functional impact (AS: 1.05 and 0.92) was also affected. 2. In female rather than male, statistically more significant impact on patients QOL was observed in all dimensions. 3. After treatment, 3 of 5 dimensions were improved significantly - emotional dimension (AS : from 1.90 to 1.30), social dimension (AS: from 1.14 to 0.83), patients view concerning treatment (AS: from 1.34 to 1.02). 4. The drgree of patients satisfaction at the therapeutic effect was very high- 62.4% (immediately after treatment) and 65.8% (9 months affer initiation of treatment) of patients answered excellent or good. Conclusion: This study confirms that toenail onychomycosis has significant impact on the overall QOL of patients. Also the effect of antifungal therapy on patients QOL were watisfactory. Therefore, both doctor and patient should pay more attention to the treatment of onychomycosis. [Kor J Med Mycol 3(1): 115∼124]

Pulse electrochemical nanopatterning, a non-contact scanning probe lithography process using ultrashort voltage pulses, is based primarily on an electrochemical machining process using localized electrochemical oxidation between a sharp tool tip and the sample surface. In this study, nanoscale oxide patterns were formed on silicon Si (100) wafer surfaces via electrochemical surface nanopatterning, by supplying external pulsed currents through non-contact atomic force microscopy. Nanoscale oxide width and height were controlled by modulating the applied pulse duration. Additionally, protruding nanoscale oxides were removed completely by simple chemical etching, showing a depressed pattern on the sample substrate surface. Nanoscale two-dimensional oxides, prepared by a localized electrochemical reaction, can be defined easily by controlling physical and electrical variables, before proceeding further to a layer-by-layer nanofabrication process.

Store-operated calcium entry (SOCE), an important mechanism of Ca2+ signaling in a wide range of cell types, is mediated by stromal interaction molecule (STIM), which senses the depletion of endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ stores and binds and activates Orai channels in the plasma membrane. This inside-out mechanism of Ca2+ signaling raises an interesting question about the evolution of SOCE: How did these two proteins existing in different cellular compartments evolve to interact with each other? We investigated the gating mechanism of Caenorhabditis elegans Orai channels. Our analysis revealed a mechanism of Orai gating by STIM binding to the intracellular 2-3 loop of Orai in C. elegans that is radically different from Orai gating by STIM binding to the N and C termini of Orai in mammals. In addition, we found that the conserved hydrophobic amino acids in the 2-3 loop of Orai1 are important for the oligomerization and gating of channels and are regulated via an intramolecular interaction mechanism mediated by the N and C termini of Orai1. This study identifies a previously unknown SOCE mechanism in C. elegans and suggests that, while the STIM-Orai interaction is conserved between invertebrates and mammals, the gating mechanism for Orai channels differs considerably.

Vibration-Assisted Electrochemical Polishing for Extremely Smooth Surface Generation

This study demonstrates a novel hybrid surface polishing process combining non-traditional electrochemical polishing (ECP) with external artificial ultrasonic vibration. ECP, typical non-contact surface polishing process, has been used to improve surface quality without leaving any mechanical scratch marks formed by previous mechanical processes, which can polish work material by electrochemical dissolution between two electrodes surfaces. In recent paper, ECP using ultrasonic vibration have demonstrated surface improvement. This study verifies improved results than conventional ECP for additional experiments to vibration electrochemical polishing (VECP) using ultrasonic vibration. The localized roughness of work material is measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for detailed information on surface. Besides roughness, overall surface quality, material removal rate (MRR), and productivity etc. are compared with conventional ECP.

A direct mechanical nanomachining, tribo-nanolithography (TNL), has been developed to fabricate micro mold on Si substrate in mechanical milling mode. An atomic force microscope (AFM) tip is replaced by a lab-made Si cantilever with a polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tool. Mechanical cutting by PCD tool enables simple fabrication of micro molds with several tens of nanometers depth. Machined cavities of the Si substrate are prepared as a master mold for additional micro molding using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS). Micro cavities are successfully duplicated in positive patterns similar to soft lithography. Normal loads of cantilever and AFM topographical images are used to discuss micro mold and micro molding characteristics.

Abstract

Developing a successful strategy to maximize the surface charge density is crucial to speed-up the commercialization success of triboelectric nanogenerator. Here, for the first time, the fabrication of positive triboelectric material to donate electrons efficiently to dielectrics is reported, by increasing the stretchability for the uniform contact and by introducing a functional group for the surface potential control. A highly stretchable and conductive film with Ag nanowires and PDMS was fabricated as a base material, in which the portion of nanowires exposed above the embedding surface should be accurately controlled. In specific, positively charged 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine (DMAP) coated Au nanoparticles, prepared by phase transfer method, are coated. The DMAP lowers the effective work function of the nanoparticles by a permanent dipole induced at the DMAP-Au interface and enhances the electron transfer to the dielectrics, confirmed by the Kelvin probe force microscope measurement. The designed nanogenerator gives an output performance up to 80V and 86μA, and 2.5mW in output power, 2.5 times enhancement compared with the conventional TENG. With the integration with AC to DC converting circuit and buck-boost circuit, the nanogenerator produces a constant voltage of 2.6V. The wireless sensing system, which operates the remote controller, were also demonstrated, turning on a siren.

Highlights

A positive triboelectric material to donate electrons efficiently to dielectrics is developed.

The keynote is to increase the stretchability and to introduce a functional group.

It was proven to be effective for the uniform contact and surface potential control.

The TENG gave an output performance up to 80 V and 86 μA, and 2.5 mW in output power.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
