        In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of Penicillinase Producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae(PPNG), we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by menas of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. In 1998, 93 strians of N. genorrhoeae were isolated, among which 60(64.5%) were PPNG. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 64.5% in 1998.

      • Diesel-Diglyme 混合燃料가 디젤엔진의 性能에 미치는 影響

        While the amount of diesel engine is increasing, the harmful exhaust emission is regarded as one of the main causes of environment pollution. In this study, by using reformulated diesel fuel mixed with the oxygenate Diglyme in various ratios, the effects of the reformulations on engine's output performance and exhaust emission have been shown. The reformulated fuel mixed with oxygenate Diglyme shows an increase in output power while CO and SMOKE were lowered by using the regular diesel fuel. By applying the mixed Diglyme fuel to diesel engine, in general, some reduction of harmful exhaust emission could be achieved without any significant change of the output efficiency of the engine.

        This is a study cn the acministration of freshman English for the overall integration of Seoul National University. Up to now freshman English, along with other general subjects, has been managed separately by different colleges without any mutual cooperation or consistent method owing to their dispersed locations. When, however, the University moves to the new campus at the beginning of the academic year 1975, the administrative integration of the subject for an efficient, collective management becomes inevitable. There have been discussions as to the improvement of freshman English teaching, but no substantial revision has been attempted, so that the teaching remained the same as ever with large­size classes, mostly of 60 to 80 students, and with antiquated method of teaching chiefly depending on translation lectures. Along with tendency to underrate the subject on the part of both professors and students frequent complaints were put forth on the occasions when the subject was brought forward. There are several points to be raised on the situation of freshman English management. First of all the amount of investment is far too small. Secondly, the class­size is too big for teaching anything other than perhaps translation of textbook materials, and exercises for composition, conversation, and hearing are quite impossible to be managed. Thirdly, the text­book material is uniformly standardized, so that no differentiation by levels or students’proposed major subjects has been taken into consideration. Fourthly, the teachers still hold on to the time­honored method of translation. Lastly, a considerable number of part­time lecturers teach the respective number of classes, which is another source of complaint on the part of the student. There may be further question to be discussed on the subject, but those seem to be the main obstacles to the improvement of freshman English teaching. Question being put forward, the solution seems to be fairly simple. Of these, however, a hew are vital in order to bring about any form of progress at all. The first is the question of more investment for the subject, which will be the key to betterment, if not a panacea. The installment of language laboratory, for example, has been requested repeatedly, but no regular­size facility has been acquired to be used for the subject, which is only one of the things that can contribute to improvement by increasing investment. Another important factor is the question of the class­size, which again has much to do with the problem of investment. To begin with, freshman English education in this University must divest itself of the antiquated teaching method almost solely dependent on translation. In order to do son the dual division of classes may be necessary: the student should be grouped into large­size classes of 200 or more for lectures, and at the same time into 30 or less for composition and language laboratory classes. While for the lectures large­size classes may be preferable because of the fact that in such a kind of class personal attention for the student is not absolutely necessary, as well as for economy sake, the small­size classes are essential for the student to improve their ability to write and speak, teaching of which has never been tried at the freshman English level in this University. The problems of graduated textbooks and teaching method present further materials for careful studies. The curricula for the general courses in this University provide the maximum of three different levels of freshman English courses, so that graduated text­books, at least two or three kinds should be compiled. Also, when the student’s major fields are considered, and if freshman English education is regarded to a large extent as a preparatory stage for reading English texts and references in major subjects, probably freshman English textbooks may be subdivided according to the major groups of special fields. The course, however, being a general education one, such graduated and depart|mental differentiation perhaps has to be reduced to the minimum. As for teaching method is should be studied to suit the class­size, student ability, textbook materials, etc. One can hardly over­estimate the importance of the teaching of English, and the University must endeavor to improve freshman English education on this occasion of the integration. A committee of specialists and active administrative assistance to work out solutions and to help realize them will be essential. The education has been neglected for too long in this University and some kind of drastic measure to reform it is long overdue. This study by a layman presents only a rudimen­tary aspect of and solution for the present statue of freshman English education is this University. The present writer, therefore, wishes that close cooperation for a lasting solution by specialists in this field should be an imminent undertaking, and that the tendency of belittling such general subjects as freshman English in favor of major subjects must be put to an end.

      • 선형등화기를 이용한 다중-사용자 복조 혼합 TDMA/CDMA 시스템

        In this paper, we studied for multi-user detection system, which hold the merit of CDMA system and can enhance the system capacity. We designed actually realizable quasi-optimal multiuser detection system by use of linear equalizer on the concept that multiuser detection algorithm can be reduced by combination TDMA with CDMA, we call this the hybrid TDMA/CDMA system. And we proposed multiuser detection system, which can use PSAD and MSDD channel estimation method. As a result of performance analysis, we acquired equal or much better performance by use of linear multichannel equalizer in the case of not so many user. And on the occasion of many user within cell we can also acquired much better performance in comparison with conventional single user detection system by use of hybrid TDMA/CDMA system.

        진단적 복강 세척법

        Diagnostic peritoneal lavage is a accurate and safe method confirming the intraabdominal injury with head trauma, unstable multiple injuried patients. But the development of imaging technique and the trend in noninvasive diagnostic value is decreasing now. In the emergency room, the emergency physicians are required the rapidity and accuracy in intial assessment and the decisions for the operation or not. So emergency physicians have been investigating the diagnostic method for intraabdomial injury that is more rapid, safe and accurate. Many diagnostic tools are developed and now accepted and used widely, among them the diagnostic peritoneal lavage is still the best method for unsatble or head injuried patients. But the positive diagnostic criterias are variable by many authors and still remain imperfectly. So our study was reviewed by medical record of patients who were undertaken the diagnostic peritoneal lavage for the diagnosis intraabdominal injury and statistical analysis was done compared with many criteria of red blood cell and white blood cell for the more accurate way. A retrospective study of diagnostic peritoneal lavage was done of 90 patients with blunt abdominal trauma during 2 years from January, 1996 to December, 1997 and summerized our experience. The results were as follows; 1) There are 73 males and 17 females in sex. The most common type of injury was the traffic accident. 2) With many variable criteria of RBC and WBC, the accuracy and the false positive and false negative were not different in statistical results. The average accurracy was 80.1%. 3) The operations were done in 30(33.3%) cases, and the most frequent injuried organ was the small bowel, 20 cases(66.7%).

        한국 정상인과 제2형 당뇨병 환자에서 췌도베타세포의 정량

        Background: There have been several reports about insulin secretory impairment in non-obese type 2 diabetic patients and even in impaired glucose tolerant subjects in Korea. Insulin secretory impairment might be induced by insufficient beta-cell mass, functional defects of beta-cells or both. To clarify the cause of impaired insulin secretion in type 2 non-obese diabetic patients in Korea, betacell masses were quantified in normal and type 2 diabetic subjects. Method: Normal pancreases were procured by 6 heart-beating non-diabetic donors under informed consent from relatives and approval of the university ethical committee. To quantify the beta cell mass and insulin content in various part of the pancreas, first we divided it into 3 parts: head, body and tail, and then each three parts were weighed and subdivided again into 8 segments equally. For diabetic patients, tissue sections were obtained from 15 partial or total pancreatectomized type 2 diabetic patients of any causes. After being fixed, tissues were immunostained using the Streptavidin-biotin-peroxidase method with anti-insulin antibody. Beta cells were counted by point count method. Results: The mean value of total pancreas weight of normal subjects (n=b) was 77.1±14.6 g, that of mean relative volume of beta cells in the pancreas was 2.1±0.9%, ranging from 1.4% to 3.1%(head 2.3±0.6%, body 1.8±0.2%, tail 2.2±0.4%). Mean value of total beta cell mass which was calculated from relative volume of beta-cells and weight of each portions was 1.3±0.3 g, ranging from 1.2 g to 1.9 g (head 0.6±0.3 g, body 0.4±0.2 g, tail 0.4±0.2 g). Mean insulin content per pancreas was 63.6±46.6 ㎍, ranging from 27.8 to 137.2 ㎍/pancreas (head 25.1±19.1 ㎍, body 20.8±15.5 ㎍, tail 17.7±14.9 ㎍). In diabetic patients, relative volume of beta cells in tissues were variable from 0.4% to 2.8% and there was good correlation between beta-cell mass and body mass index of the diabetic patients. However we can't find the correlation among relative volume of beta-cell, (r²=0.55, p$lt;0.05) duration of diabetes and age. Remarkable heterogeneity for loss of beta-cells in the islets of diabetic patients was observed even in the same lobe of pancreas. There were no evidence of lymphocytic infiltration in the islets. Conclusion: Insufficient beta cell mass seems to be a main cause for insulin secretory impairment in non-obese type 2 diabetic patients in Korea.
