Time-related Mapping of Quantitative Trait Loci Controlling Dry Matter Accumulation and Partitioning in Rice

        Shao Bo Li,Zhi Hong Zhang,Shao Qing Li,Yang Sheng Li,You Lin Zhu,Ying Guo Zhu 한국유전학회 2008 Genes & Genomics Vol.30 No.4

Grain yield is a result of dry matter accumulation and partitioning in rice (Oryza sativa L.). To characterize the genetic basis of dynamics of traits representing dry matter accumulation and partitioning as well as their relationships with each other, composite interval mapping of quantitative trait loci (QTL) was conducted based on time-related phenotypic data obtained from a population of 258 recombinant inbred lines (F12), which was derived from a cross between Lemont (japonica var.) and Teqing (indica var.). A total of twenty-three QTL were identified for leaf weight, stem weight and panicle weight at four measuring stages after heading. However, these three dynamic traits were observed to be controlled by different QTL (genes) at different growth stages. An extreme example was that at least three types of QTL (genes) might be involved in the development of panicle weight. Growth duration, which is closely related to dry matter accumulation and partitioning, was also identified to be significantly affected by four QTL. The close correlations among the studied four traits were explained to some extent by six co-located QTL. Nevertheless, it would be of great importance to distinguish the pleiotropic or linked effects of the co-located QTL. In addition, the chromosome regions or QTL identified in this study were compared with those previously reported for the same or related traits with the same RIL population.

      • SULT1A1 Arg213His Polymorphism and Lung Cancer Risk: a Meta-analysis

Liao, Shao-Guang,Liu, Lu,Zhang, Ying-Yi,Wang, Ying,Wang, Ya-Jie Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.2

Background: The SULT1A1 Arg213His polymorphism is reported to be associated with lung cancer risk. However, this relationship remains controversial. For better understanding a meta-analysis was therefore performed. Methods: An extensive search was performed to identify all case-control studies investigating association between SULT1A1 Arg213His polymorphism and lung cancer risk. The strength was assessed by odds ratio (OR) with the corresponding 95% confidence interval (95%CI). Results: A total of five publications covering 1,669 cases and 1,890 controls were included in this meta-analysis. No significant association between SULT1A1 Arg213His polymorphism and lung cancer risk was observed in overall comparisons in all genetic models (dominant model: OR=1.33, 95%CI=1.00-1.76, P=0.05; additive model: OR=1.30, 95%CI=0.93-1.81, P=0.12; recessive model: OR=1.21, 95%CI=0.89-1.66, P=0.23). However, on subgroup analysis, an elevated risk in mixed populations with variant His allele was revealed in the dominant model (OR=1.66, 95% CI=1.06-2.62, P=0.03). Furthermore, the SULT1A1 Arg213His polymorphism was associated with an increased risk of lung cancer in both females and males in the dominant model (females: OR=1.72, 95%CI=1.29-2.27, P=0.00; males: OR=1.46, 95%CI=1.19-1.78, P=0.00). No significant association between this polymorphism and different smoking status (smokers and non-smokers) and the other ethnicities (Asians and Caucasians) was shown. Conclusions: The results of this meta-analysis indicate that the SULT1A1 Arg213His polymorphism is not associated with lung cancer risk in Asians and Caucasians, but possible elevation for genotype (GA/AA) in mixed populations and males and females needs further investigation.

The Presence of Open Dentinal Tubules Affects the Biological Properties of Dental Pulp Cells Ex Vivo

        Mei-Ying Shao,Zhong-Sen Fu,Ran Cheng,Hui Yang,Li Cheng,Feng-Ming Wang,Tao Hu 한국분자세포생물학회 2011 Molecules and cells Vol.31 No.1

To investigate the effects of open dentinal tubules on the morphological and functional characteristics of dental pulp cells. Morphological changes in human dental pulp cells that were seeded onto dentin discs with open den-tinal tubules were investigated on days 1, 2, 4, and 10 of culture using scanning electron microscopy and fluores-cence microscopy. Samples collected on days 1, 3, 6, 8, and 10 of culture were evaluated for cell proliferation rate and alkaline phosphatase activity. Cultured human dental pulp cells developed a columnar or polygonal morphology and monopolar cytoplasmic processes that extended into the dentinal tubules. The cells formed a multilayer and secreted an extracellular matrix onto the cell surface. Scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy revealed polarized organization of odontoblasts. Cells seeded onto dentin discs prolifer-ated minimally but showed high levels of ALP activity. Dental pulp cells seeded onto treated dentin discs develop an odontoblast-like phenotype, which may be a potential alternative for use in experimental research on dentinogenesis.

Effects of electromagnetic field and asymmetric Gaussian potential on low energy state energy of bound polaron in quantum well

Wang Ying-Hao,Chen Ying-Jie,Shao Feng-Lan 한국물리학회 2020 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.77 No.7

In this article, effects of electromagnetic field and asymmetric Gaussian potential (AGP) on the bound polaron's low energy state in quantum well are explored theoretically by the Lee-Low-Pines unitary transformation and Pekar type variational method. The variation of the ground state energy and the first excited state energy of the polaron with the Coulomb bound potential (CBP) strength at different electron-phonon coupling (EPC) constants, electric field (EF) strengths, heights and ranges of the AGP and magnetic field adjustment lengths are obtained. Our numerical results indicate that the polaron's low energy state depends on the EPC constant, the EF strength, the AGP's height and range and the CBP strength.

Schisandrin B Improves the Hypothermic Preservation of Celsior Solution in Human Umbilical Cord Mesenchymal Stem Cells

        Zhang Ying,Wang Peng,Jin Mei-xian,Zhou Ying-qi,Ye Liang,Zhu Xiao-juan,Li Hui-fang,Zhou Ming,Li Yang,Li Shao,Liang Kang-yan,Wang Yi,Gao Yi,Pan Ming-xin,Zhou Shu-qin,Peng Qing 한국조직공학과 재생의학회 2023 조직공학과 재생의학 Vol.20 No.3

BACKGROUND: Human umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (hUCMSCs) have emerged as promising therapy for immune and inflammatory diseases. However, how to maintain the activity and unique properties during cold storage and transportation is one of the key factors affecting the therapeutic efficiency of hUCMSCs. Schisandrin B (SchB) has many functions in cell protection as a natural medicine. In this study, we investigated the protective effects of SchB on the hypothermic preservation of hUCMSCs. METHODS: hUCMSCs were isolated from Wharton’s jelly. Subsequently, hUCMSCs were exposed to cold storage (4 C) and 24-h re-warming. After that, cells viability, surface markers, immunomodulatory effects, reactive oxygen species (ROS), mitochondrial integrity, apoptosis-related and antioxidant proteins expression level were evaluated. RESULTS: SchB significantly alleviated the cells injury and maintained unique properties such as differentiation potential, level of surface markers and immunomodulatory effects of hUCMSCs. The protective effects of SchB on hUCMSCs after hypothermic storage seemed associated with its inhibition of apoptosis and the anti-oxidative stress effect mediated by nuclear factor erythroid 2–related factor 2 signaling. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate SchB could be used as an agent for hypothermic preservation of hUCMSCs.

More than popularity matters : How would voters like to get social networking with candidates?

Shao-Liang Chang,Chi-Ying Chen 국제문화기술진흥원 2015 International Journal of Advanced Culture Technolo Vol.3 No.2

An online survey was conducted to assess motivations for using, reliance on, and perceived credibility of political blogs and microblogs during both the Taiwanese general election of 2009 (the blog epoch) and the presidential elections of 2012 (the microblog epoch). Results indicated higher reliance on and motivation for using political blogs than microblogs. Blogs were also perceived to be more credible than microblogs. Respondents who primarily engaged in blogging for information purposes were more likely to judge candidate blogs as highly credible, whereas interest in entertainment emerged as the strongest predictor of the perceived credibility of microblogs. This research also provided quantitative evidence showing how users viewed blogs and microblogs differently in the context of political campaigns. The aim is to explore the pros and cons of blogging and microblogging as a tool for political communication.

The solvent-free modification of butyl rubber in the medium of NaH

Ying Feng,Yan Xia Wang,Hong Qi Shao,En Hua Zhang,Zhen Wang,Jiruo Zhao 한국공업화학회 2014 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.20 No.1

A novel improved butyl rubber (PMIIR) was prepared in a solvent free process, using sodium hydride(NaH) as activating agent and maleic anhydride (MAH) as modifier by processing modificationtechnology in a conventional polymer processing equipment of an internal mixer. The structure ofproducts was characterized by 1H NMR and FT-IR. In this process, polar sodium carboxylate functionalgroup and unsaturated carbon–carbon double bonds were successfully introduced onto the chains of IIRon one step. The reaction mechanism was investigated in detail. It was found that the functionalizationexperienced two modified mechanisms: addition and substitution modified mechanisms. The reactionefficiency and content of MAH were evaluated. Polymer isolation and purification operations werereduced out due to the result of solvent free. Curing and mechanical properties of products wereinvestigated. It was found that PMIIR has greatly increased curing rate due to the incorporation of polargroup and carbon–carbon double bond.

Comparison of the Efficacy of Two Microsphere Embolic Agents for Transcatheter Arterial Chemoembolization in Hepatocellular Carcinoma Patients

        Shao-Hua Lee,Chia-Ying Lin,Ya-Chun Hsu,Yi-Sheng Liu,Ming-Tsung Chuang,Ming-Ching Ou 대한암학회 2020 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.52 No.1

Purpose Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) delivers cytotoxic drugs intra-arterially and induces ischemic necrosis by arterial embolization. Embolization is achieved using a variety of agents that differ widely in particle size and range, deformation, and in vivo arterial distribution. The clinical significance of these differences has not been thoroughly characterized. The present study is to compare the efficacy of Embosphere and Embozene microspheres in TACE therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma. Materials and Methods This retrospective study includes 108 hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients who received TACE/doxorubicin with Embozene (70 patients) or Embosphere (38 patients) at a single medical center. Patient outcomes, including liver function, tumor size, tumor response, and complications after treatment, were analyzed. The change in total target lesion size and tumor response was evaluated according to embolization agent and clinical characteristics. Results The postoperative glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (mean, 194.5 vs. 147.5; p=0.032) and bilirubin (mean, 1.11 mg/dL vs. 0.73 mg/dL; p=0.016) were higher among patients treated with Embozene, the decrease in the number (55.86±25.55% vs. 41.81±38.51%, p=0.027) and size (56.37±25.91 mm vs. 43.44±37.89 mm, p=0.001) of liver tumors relative to baseline was greater in these patients than in those treated with Embosphere. These greater antitumor effects were achieved using lower doses of doxorubicin than for treatment with Embozene. Minor complications were more common among patients treated with Embosphere than with Embozene. Conclusion These results suggest that Embozene is more efficacious than Embosphere for HCC treatment using TACE/doxorubicin.

Least squares estimation of kinetic parameters in batch adsorption of phenol with confidence interval analysis

Ying Yan,Yan Shao,Huiping Zhang 한국화학공학회 2013 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.30 No.8

Adsorption kinetics of phenol on granular coconut shell activated carbon and granular coal based activated carbon was investigated by the model of homogeneous surface diffusion plus external film mass transfer with the stirred batch adsorber. The model was solved numerically by finite element and the parameter estimation was performed with the nonlinear least squares method. Through the confidence interval analysis and evaluation of the error sum of squares, higher precision of the parameter estimates can be obtained by combining more decay curves; the decay curves with the different initial solution concentrations and adsorbent dosages can be well represented with identical film mass transfer coefficient and surface diffusivity, and the effect of surface adsorption coverage on the surface diffusivity is negligible in the adsorption systems. The values of the film mass transfer coefficient and surface diffusivity are in the order of magnitude 10−5 and 10−12, respectively.
