This study is analysis of the traditional pond at Dae-Sul Myeon, Yesan-gun, Chung-Nam based on old documents, actual survey, interviews with inhabitants and Lee's descendents to excavate traditional pond. The important results are following. 1. When Lee San-haes grave was built in mid Yi dynasty, this traditional pond was also built to make a front yard of grave into a very good place by Lee Duck-Hyung (Han Eum, 1561-1613), the second son-in-law of Lee San-hae(1539-1609) on geomancer's advice. 2. Looked down from his grave in Mt. Bonsu whose shape is girl-playing-a string, this artificial pond was not only for getting water but for making a good site with soil in view of feng-shui, Yin and Yang theory. This is a differentiated and specific style compared with those of palaces, high officials gardens, temples and villas. 3. As this pond is in the approach to the town, it comes to play a main entrance role in town and surroundings and its practical usages give inhabitants and Lee's descendents much convenience because it divides rice field into two parts as reservoir, the upper and the lower part. 4. Three round islands in the pond symbolize Bonrae, Bangzang, Youngju and a zelkova tree in each island expresses hermits thought of Taoism pursuing no aging and longevity. We can infer Yin and Yang from the shape of changed trapezoid pond (L: 90M×W: 20M) with round islands in the its middle which was popular in pond near the house at that time. 5. This pond flows from the east-southern corner to north-west coner, and its depth is 1.8M-1M with relatively clean water quality. These mean that heights of both water gate is different in diagonal direction to make its flow smooth. So this pond has kept its good condition in muddy degree, clarity, chromaticity to taking circulation system of traditional ponds. 6. To maintain structural stability, an embankment with small stones are built in lower part, with soil in upper part. But it needs to recover its original shape as a relic because repair work was done with stone for convenience sake in northern part. And two cherry trees and weeping willows around the pond should be repaired into original shapes according to old documents and specialists opinions. This study is about peculiar pond as a relic which was built for another goal and by special method. But due to its rare documents and detail research, this study has lots of limits, and leave them as next tasks.

Purpose : In order to study the effectiveness of East-West pain treatment on central poststroke pain(CPSP), we evaluated its effect on alleviation of pain and rehabilitation of CPSP Patients who were treated with electroacupuncture and west pain treatment for four weeks. Methods : Twenty four patients diagnosed by their pain characteristics of central pain from stroke were treated with sympathetic nerve block, gabapentin, amitriptyline, and electroacupuncture for four weeks. Pain intensity through the visual analogue scale(VAS), and improvements of mobility and rehabilitation through the modified Barthel index(MBI) and Rankin scale(RS), respectively, before and after pain treatment were also assessed. Results : VAS pain scores were significantly improved from 7.7±1.7 to 4.4±2.0 with pain treatment(p<0.05). In accordance with improvement of pain scores, RS and MBI scores were also improved from 2.88±0.95 to 2.13± 1.01 and from 83.0± 16.9 to 94.7±9.5(p<0.05), respectively, with pain treatment(p<0.05). Conclusions : It was suggested that the active pain treatment was contributed to the rehabilitation of CPSP patients, resulting in improvement of quality of life of CPSP patients. Futhermore, East pain treatment in combination with West pain treatment may be useful modality to alleviate CPSP.

We isolated and identified antioxidants from acidic and neutral ethyl acetate fractions of the peel of pear (Pyrus pyrifolia N. cv. Chuhwangbae). We isolated 4 compounds from the methanol extract, by using 3 different types of column chromatography (Sephadex LH-20, silica gel, and octadecylsilane) and preparative HPLC. We identified the isolated compounds as (S)-(+)-2-cis-abscisic acid O-β-D-glucopyranosyl ester (compound 1), 1-[4-O-β-D-glucopyranosyl]phenyl ethanone (picroside, compound 2), β-sitosterol (compound 3), and β-sitosteryl 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (compound 4) by nuclear magnetic resonance analysis. We are the first to report the identification of compounds 1, 2, and 4 from pear.

The very lysine-rich histones(H1) from normal leucoctyes, myelocytic leukemia leucocytes, human and bovine colostrum, and bakers' yeast were prepared according to the method of Johns, and Phillips and Johns. The purity of H1 fractions from various sources was checked by 15% polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis. The amino acid composition of each H1 fraction were determined by ion exchange chromatography procedure described by Spackman et al. These very lysine-rich histones were, further, subfractionated by chromatography on Amberlite IRC-50 with a shallow guanidinium chloride gradient. The results obtained were summarized as follows: 1) The yield of H1 fractions from various sources greatly differed each other. For example, in myelocytic leukemia leucocytes the levels of H1 was many times that of H1 in normal colostrum, suggesting that the levels of H1 is dependent on the function of tissue proper. 2) The electrophoretic mobility of individual very lysine-rich histone fractions gave similar patterns to those of corresponding fraction from various sources. 3) The chromatographic profiles of very lysine-rich histones from leucocytes, colostrum and bakers' yeast revealed that there were significant differences in molecular species and relative amounts between various biological species. 4) Amino acid composition of histone H1 examined in the present studies, could be classified into two categories. One of these groups resemble the very lysine-rich histone found in eukaryotic cells, i.e., normal leucocytes, human and bovine colostrum. The other group, which may be confined to the myelocytic leukemia leucocytes and bakers' yeast, exhibited quite lower Lys/Arg ratio which due to lesser contents of arginine residues in the subfraction molecule.
