        Assessment of Occupational Symptoms and Chemical Exposures for Nail Salon Technicians in Daegu City, Korea

        Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate occupational symptoms and chemical exposures of nail salon technicians. Methods: Work-related symptoms of nail salon technicians in Daegu City were surveyed using a researcher-administered questionnaire,and responses were compared to those of non-exposed office workers as controls. Personal exposure level of airborne volatile organic compounds was also monitored using passive samplers. Results: A total of 159 subjects in 120 salons were interviewed. Average work-shift concentrations of 13 chemicals were measured for 50 workers from 30 salons using personal passive samplers. The most frequently reported respiratory or neurologic symptoms by nail shop technicians compared to controls were nose irritation (odds ratio [OR], 54.0; confidence interval [CI], 21.6 to 134.8), followed by headache (OR, 9.3; CI, 4.7 to 18), and throat irritation (OR, 4.3; CI, 2.2 to 8.5). For eyes and skin, 92% of respondents complained eye irritation(OR, 13.1; CI, 5.7 to 30.1). In musculoskeletal symptoms, workers reported pain or discomfort in shoulders (OR, 20.3; CI, 7.7 to 54) and neck (OR, 19.7; CI, 8.9 to 43.6). From personal measurements, the proportion of exceeding the Korean Occupational Exposure Limit was the highest for acetone with 64%, followed by toluene (50%), butyl acetate (46%), and methyl methacrylate (12%). However,the service was being provided without a proper ventilation system in most surveyed shops. Conclusions: Based on these findings, it is warranted to have appropriate local exhaust ventilation place to ensure adequate health protection of nail shop technicians as well as customers. At the same time, greater policy interests are warranted in nail care business to protect health of both workers and customers.

        일반간호사 인사고과도구 수정 및 신뢰도, 타당도 검증

        Purpose: This study was done to develop performance appraisal guidelines based on the standardized appraisal tool developed in a previous study. Methods: A preliminary investigation was done to draw up a draft guidelines through a literature review. To verify the content validity of the guidelines, 10 nurse managers reviewed the standardized appraisal tool and draft guidelines. Through this process, the performance appraisal guidelines were revised and supplemented. In order to examine the reliability and validity of the guidelines, 13 nurse managers conducted performance appraisal for 178 nurses. Results: As a result, the items of pre-existing tool was reduced from 63 to 30 for usefulness, and guidelines for each items were developed. Conclusion: The revised performance appraisal tool and guidelines are expected to be useful in objectively evaluating nursing performance objectively.

        Association between Elevated Pleural Interleukin-33 Levels and Tuberculous Pleurisy

        Background: Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) plays a crucial role in Mycobacterium tuberculosis induced pleural responses. Interleukin (IL)-33 up-regulates the production of IFN-γ. We aimed to identify whether an association between pleural IL-33 levels and tuberculous pleurisy exists and determine its diagnostic value. Methods: Pleural IL-33, ST2 (a receptor of IL-33), adenosine deaminase (ADA), and IFN-γ, as well as serum IL-33 and ST2 were measured in 220 patients with pleural effusions (PEs). Patients with malignant (MPEs), parapneumonic (PPEs), tuberculous (TPEs), and cardiogenic (CPEs) pleural effusions were included. Results: Pleural and serum IL-33 levels were highest or tended to be higher in patients with TPEs than in those with other types of PEs. The median pleural fluid-to-serum IL-33ratio was higher in TPE cases (≥ 0.91) than in other PE cases (≤ 0.56). Pleural IL-33 levels correlated with those of pleural ADA and IFN-γ. However, the diagnostic accuracies of pleural IL-33 (0.74) and pleural fluid-to-serum IL-33 ratio (0.75) were lower than that of ADA (0.95) or IFN-γ (0.97). Pleural ST2 levels in patients with MPEs were higher than in patients with TPEs. Serum ST2 levels did not differ among the groups. Conclusions: We identified an association between elevated pleural IL-33 levels and tuberculous pleurisy. However, we recommend conventional pleural markers (ADA or IFN-γ) as diagnostic markers of TPE.

        The Color Stability of Resin Composite After Exposure to pH Solutions and Immerse Into Staining Beverages

        본 연구는 3가지 다른 pH 용액에 노출된 후 착색 음료에 침전된 복합 레진의 색 변화를 평가하였다. 실험을 위해 A3색을 가진 복합 레진 Z350 XT(3M ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA)으로 직경 8 mm, 두께 2 mm의 시편을 제작하였다. 각 10개의 시편으로 서로 다른 3가지 pH용액(pH 3, pH 6, pH 9)에 14일 동안 노출 후 시편들을 다시 3그룹의 착색음료(증류수, 커피, 포도주스)에 3일 동안 침전시켰다. 착색음료 침전 전과 후의 L*, a*, b*값을 spectrophotometer로 측정하고 측정값으로 색 변화와 투명도의 변화를 계산하였다. 계산된 결과값을 ANOVA와 Tukey’s test로 분석하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 실험 결과, 색 변화(ΔE) 값은 착색음료 종류에 따른 통계학적 유의한 차이는 있었으나(p < 0.05), 이전의 노출된 pH 용액에 따른 유의한 차이는 없었다(p > 0.05). 착색 음료 침전 후 반투명도 지수(TP) 값은 증류수를 제외하고 감소되는 경향이었고, 반투명도 지수 변화(ΔTP)는 포도주스에서 가장 높았다. 결론적으로 복합 레진의 색 안정성은 기존의 다양한 pH 용액에 노출된 상태가 아니라 착색 음료에 의존하는 것으로 사료된다.

        Establishment of a Bone-Specific col10a1:GFP Transgenic Zebrafish

        During skeletal development, both osteogenic and chondrogenic programs are initiated from multipotent mesenchymal cells, requiring a number of signaling molecules, transcription factors, and downstream effectors to orchestrate the sophisticated process. Col10a1, an important downstream effector gene, has been identified as a marker for maturing chondrocytes in higher vertebrates, such as mammals and birds. In zebrafish, this gene has been shown to be expressed in both osteoblasts and chondrocytes, but no study has reported its role in osteoblast development. To initially delineate the osteogenic program from chondrogenic lineage development, we used the zebrafish col10a1 promoter to establish a transgenic zebrafish expressing a GFP reporter specifically in osteoblast-specific bone structures that do not involve cartilaginous programs. A construct harboring a ~2.2-kb promoter region was found to be sufficient to drive the reporter gene in osteoblast-specific bone structures within the endoge-nous col10a1 expression domain, confirming that separable cis-acting elements exist for distinct cell type-specific expression of col10a1 during zebrafish skeletal development. The ~2.2-kb col10a1:GFP trans- genic zebrafish marking only bone structures derived from osteoblasts will undoubtedly be an invaluable tool for identifying and characterizing molecular events driving osteoblast development in zebrafish, which may further provide a differential mechanism where col10a1 is involved in the development of chondrocytes undergoing maturation in other vertebrate systems.
