Association between Elevated Pleural Interleukin-33 Levels and Tuberculous Pleurisy

Background: Interferon-γ (IFN-γ) plays a crucial role in Mycobacterium tuberculosis induced pleural responses. Interleukin (IL)-33 up-regulates the production of IFN-γ. We aimed to identify whether an association between pleural IL-33 levels and tuberculous pleurisy exists and determine its diagnostic value. Methods: Pleural IL-33, ST2 (a receptor of IL-33), adenosine deaminase (ADA), and IFN-γ, as well as serum IL-33 and ST2 were measured in 220 patients with pleural effusions (PEs). Patients with malignant (MPEs), parapneumonic (PPEs), tuberculous (TPEs), and cardiogenic (CPEs) pleural effusions were included. Results: Pleural and serum IL-33 levels were highest or tended to be higher in patients with TPEs than in those with other types of PEs. The median pleural fluid-to-serum IL-33ratio was higher in TPE cases (≥ 0.91) than in other PE cases (≤ 0.56). Pleural IL-33 levels correlated with those of pleural ADA and IFN-γ. However, the diagnostic accuracies of pleural IL-33 (0.74) and pleural fluid-to-serum IL-33 ratio (0.75) were lower than that of ADA (0.95) or IFN-γ (0.97). Pleural ST2 levels in patients with MPEs were higher than in patients with TPEs. Serum ST2 levels did not differ among the groups. Conclusions: We identified an association between elevated pleural IL-33 levels and tuberculous pleurisy. However, we recommend conventional pleural markers (ADA or IFN-γ) as diagnostic markers of TPE.

The purpose of this study is to facilitate understanding related to the near death experience for nurses. The research method used in this study was a qualitative research method, phenomenological approach. The participants were three persons; two males and one female. One was confirmed dead by a medical doctor came to life 30 minutes later. Another was unconscious for 9 days, which means social death. The last one experienced near death from drowning. The data was collected using in-depth interviews four times respectively form March 5, 1998 to June 10, 2001 and analyzed using Giorgi's phenomenological approach in qualitative methods. The results of this study shows that the meaning of near death experience involved 'flashed scenes from his/her whole life', 'suffering', 'deviation', 'ambivalence about death', 'resuscitation' and 'maturity'. Further research is needed to provide nurses with wholistic care for persons experiencing near death. As 2% of the dead come to life again, it is quite reasonable that the dead are left at a room temperature (without being frozen) for 2 or 4 days and carefully watched 24 hours by the mourning family members before the final burial in the Korean traditional funeral ceremony held at home. I f one can have a new life from near death experience, this experience serves as an excellent chance for the person concerned to make a new decision for a more meaningful life and enforce positive attitudes.

This case study, based on my experience of teaching of the undergraduate level at Chonnam National University, starts with the assumption that the novel and film can be discussed on the common ground offered by interdisciplinary and cultural studies because the interaction of literature and film has special relevance to our culture and times. The primary aim of this course is to serve students who wish to continue reading novels and films together and follow their own interests in further exploring certain topics. As shown in the course description which delineate my attempts, this case study aims to be historical, methodological and pedagogical, representing a variety of cultural practices and critical methods. For greatest flexibility in different genes, cultures and stances, the course cover 13 to 16 texts, including the post colonial English- speaking world, and tries to contextualize and highlight those topics which dramatize the most pressing motifs of these times and areas. For a basic vocabulary for beginning to think about and write about novels and films, a brief presentation of key critical concepts provide students with the tools to distinguish their particular practices: narrative structures, genes, and formal devices such as camera techniques, film, languages, other critical terms and analytic categories. In this study, three texts are dealt with, which will allow student to think about English novels and the others : <A Passage to India>, <Once Were Warriors> and <An Angel at My Table>. Group discussions for topics and cinematography are crucial in evoking creative responses from students. Thus, in a cultural period in which boundaries of literature and film are continually being redrawn, the topic of literature and film should serve to invigorate than ever before inside the classroom.

비타민 A의 공급이 Zn 결핍식이를 섭취한 흰쥐의 체내 지질과산화와 glutathione 함량에 미치는 영향

The present study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary level of vitamin A on the lipid peroxidation in rats fed Zn-deficient diets. Fifty male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed 5 experimental diets for 7 weeks. Rats were fed zinc- and vitamin A- deficient diet or the same diet supplemented with various levels of vitamin A. Lipid peroxide values of plasma and hepatic mitochondrial fraction were elevated in zinc- and vitamin A- deficient rats. But these values were significantly decreased by supplementation of moderate level of vitamin A. Glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) activity in rat liver was decreased in Zn-deficient groups, particularly in the low level of vitamin A groups. Superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity tended to be reduced in Zn-deficient rats, but vitamin A supplementation did not affect this enzyme activity. The change of catalase activity was similar to that of GSH-Px activity. However this decrement was significantly increased by supplementation of moderate level of vitamin A. Glutathione content of rat liver was not affected by Zn-deficient diets. Key words : Zn. vitamin A, lipid peroxidation, glutathione

尹月下(1915~2003)의 종단정화운동과 개혁활동

이 논문은 20세기 후반 한국불교사에 중요한 자취를 남겼던 老天堂 尹月下의 1950년대에서 1960년대까지의 종단 정화활동과 1970년대에서 1994년까지의 교단내 활동을 정리한 것이다. 그는 1954-5년 정화운동의 초기에는 대처측, 정부측 대표들과 협상을 벌인 비구측 대표 중 한명으 로서 활약하였고 이후에는 통도사와 경남지역 정화에 헌신하였다. 1960 년대 통합종단의 탄생과 운영과정에서도 불교재건비상종회의원, 총무부장, 감찰원장의 중임을 맡았다. 이후 1970-80년대 종단의 분규의 현장에서 윤월하는 종단의 원로로서 분규를 해소하고 종단의 앞날을 기약하기 위한 역할을 맡았다. 그는 정화 이후 줄곧 종단의 개혁을 지향해왔고, 종단개혁을 위한 그의 행보는 1994년 개혁종단의 종정에 추대됨으로서 결정을 맺게 되었다. 정화운동 의 1세대로서 1994년 개혁종단의 종정이 되었다는 것은 20세기 조계종 사에서 정화운동이 지닌 의미를 단적으로 보여주는 사건이며 윤월하는 20세기 후반 교단개혁의 역사를 보여주는 상징적 인물이 된 것이었다. 그리고 그가 지닌 정화이념은 1950년대에서 1990년대 후반까지의 정치 적 결단을 설명해주는 지표였던 것으로 보인다. 그의 이러한 행적은 신 심과 공익성을 중시하고 이판과 사판을 아울러 체달해야 한다는 수행자 로서의 책임의식과 시대의 변화를 두려워하지 않는 열린 자세에서 비롯 한 것이었다. 현재까지 윤월하의 삶과 사상, 종단정치상의 행적에 대한 평가 작업은 제대로 이루어지지 않고 있다. 앞으로 그의 출가 전후의 이력, 통도사에 서의 생활, 종단에서의 활약상, 수행력과 사상을 보여줄 수 있는 다양한 자료를 찾아내고 이를 통해 합당한 역사적 위상을 밝혀내는 일이 필요하다. This study investigates Yun, Wolha's activities in the Buddhist Purification Movement and Buddhist Reformation from 1950's to 1990's. This study underlines he was a symbol of the Korean contemporary Buddhist history. Because he was not only the youngest leader of the Buddhist Purification Movement, but also became the Supreme Patriarch of the Jogye Order after the Buddhist Reformation in 1994. He was a famous Seon ascetic but he always participated as a troble-solving broker in the complications of Jogye order. He had conserved the ideal of the buddhist Purification Movement in his political activities of the Jogye order. He tried to restore the ideal of the Jogye order to purify Samgha. He was one of the most important monk of the contemporary Buddhist history. Nevertheless, the studies about him was rarely found. It will be expected the reinvestigation of his life, his thought for the purification of the Jogye order, and the activities in the Buddhist Reformation in 1990's.
