The purpose of this research is to evaluate indoor office environment using the concentrations of nicotine, 3-enthenyl-pyridine(3-EP), and respirable suspended particulate(RSP), which are indicators for environmental tobacco smoke(ETS) and the correlations between indicators and environmental conditions(smoking density, smoking index). The mean air charge per hour (ACH) in smoking rooms was 10.4 and most of the smoking rooms showed non-compliance withe ASHRAE standard value except only one smoking rooms. The concentrations of RSP, 3-EP, nicotine showed log=normal distributions, and became different statistically depending on smoking condition(p〈0.01). The geometric mean concentration of RSP in smoking room was 441.7 ug/㎡ that is far exceeded environmental standard(150 ug/㎡). This implies that fine particulate in smoking room should be carefully controlled considering smoking density and ventilation fate. The mean concentrations of nicotine and 3-EP were 93.4 ug/㎥, respectively. The correlation coefficients between RSP and SI, 3-EP and SI, and Nicotine and SI were 0.67, 0.84 and 0.74, respectively. The correlation coefficient between nicotine and 3-EP, nicotine and RSP, and RSP and 3-EP were 0.76,0.78 and 0.57 respectively.

The purpose of this study was to quantify the maximum EMG levels and determine if there are differences in these EMG levels with respect to different knee flexion angles. Eight university students with no known musculoskeletal disorders were recruited as the participants. The maximum voluntary isometric knee extensions and flexions were taken from each participant sat on the isokinetic exercise machine (Cybex 340) at five different knee flexion angles (10?30?50?70? 90?. After surface electrodes were attached to rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus laterlis, biceps femoris, and semitendinosus, maximum EMG levels at five different knee flexion angles were measured. The results showed that there was no significant difference in maximum EMG levels among five different knee flexion angles. Although there was no significant difference in EMG levels and were some variations among different knee flexion angles, the EMG signals of quadriceps in extension and biceps femoris in flexion were the greatest at 30? It seems that different joint angles or relative locations of body segments might affect the magnitude of EMG levels. Because the maximum EMG levels could change with a different knee flexion angle, an attempt should be made to more accurately measure these values. If then, %MVIC measure provides more reliable data and is most appropriate for EMG normalization.

Pseudomembranous colitis (PMC) is a disease caused by Clostridium difficile proliferation. The causative drugs are clindamycin, third-generation cephalosporins, flouroquinolone and so on. Rifampicin has been reported as a cause of PMC in the 1980s, and the frequency of PMC is increasing because rifampicin is a first line drug for anti-tuberculosis therapy. Two patients were recently admitted to our hospital due to watery diarrhea for 1 month and they were diagnosed with PMC by sigmoidoscopy. Their onset age were 74, 72 years old and latent period of symptoms were 60, 129 days, respectively. In one case, the patient displayed coexisting hypertension and diabetes. The clinical symptoms improved after discontinuing the rifampicin and then administering oral metronidazole. We report here on two cases presumed to be rifampicin-induced PMC.

In acetone-ammonia system with amines, N-Substituted hydrazone was synthesized by the oxidation of hydrogenperoxide. The results are as follows : 1. The yield of phenylhydrazone was increased and that of azone decreawed with increasing the aniline added. 2. The excess of aniline was unfarorable for preparation of both azine and hydrazone. 3. Similar behavior was observed for t-butylamine to afford acetone t-butylhydrazone and azine, while cyclohexylamine resulted in the exclusive formation of 2-cyclohexyl-3, 3-dimethyloxaziridine.

Freeze-dried kimchi fractions, water-soluble (WSK) versus water-insoluble (WISK), on their effects on plasma lipids and for their fibrinolytic activities were studied. Nineteen middle-aged healthy subjects were assigned to WSK, WISK, or placebo during 6 weeks of kimchi supplementation. Subjects in the WSK and WISK groups were supplemented with 3 grams of kimchi pills (equivalent to 60 grams of fresh kimchi), while the placebo group was on their normal diets. LDL/HDL and atherogenic index decreased in the subjects who received kimchi pills, but not in those in the placebo group. The levels of plasma triglyceride were significantly decreased in the WSK group compared with those in the WISK group (p<0.05). However, there was no difference in the levels of total cholesterol and HDL between the two groups. Fibrinolytic activity of WISK was significantly higher than that of WSK.

The purpose of this study was to examine the interrelations among current status of nutrition education, satisfaction with school lunch, school lunch leftovers and self-rated mental or physical health in order to find out the effective method of nutrition education. For this, a questionnaire survey of 623 primary school 5th and 6th-graders in Daejeon area was carried out. The eating places were classrooms (41.1%) and restaurants (58.9%). A 59.2% of students have received nutrition education and the opportunity of receiving nutrition education was more in 5th-graders than in 6th-graders (p<0.001). The score of nutrition knowledge was 9.4±2.8 out of 15. When the score of nutrition knowledge was higher, the practical use of nutrition knowledge was higher (r=0.134, p<0.01); the score of school lunch leftovers were less (r=-0.116, p<0.01); and the score of self-rated mental health was more positive (r=0.198, p<0.01). The practical use of nutrition knowledge was 2.9±1.1 out of 5. When the practical use of nutrition knowledge was higher, satisfaction with school lunch was higher (r=0.105, p<0.01); school lunch leftovers were less (r=-0.103, p<0.01); the score of self-rated positive mental health was higher (r=0.293, p<0.01); and the scores of self-rated negative mental health (r=-0.119, p<0.05) and physical health (r=-0.126, p<0.01) were lower, thus rating their health more positively. The score of satisfaction with school lunch was 3.4±1.0 out of 5. When the satisfaction with school lunch was higher, the score of school lunch leftovers was less (r=-0.216, p<0.01); the score of self-rated positive mental health was higher (r=0.147, p<0.01); and the score of self-rated negative health was lower (r=-0.121, p<0.01). The score of school lunch leftovers was 2.9±1.4 out of 5. When the school lunch leftovers were less, self-rated positive mental health was significantly higher (r=-0.146, p<0.01); and the scores of self-rated negative mental health (r=0.135, p<0.01) and physical health (r=0.223, p<0.01) were significantly lower, thus presenting positive health. Therefore, in order to maintain positive health condition, it is necessary to carry out nutrition education, which is able to raise the nutrition knowledge and practical use of nutrition knowledge, school lunch satisfaction and to reduce the school lunch leftovers.
