        Malignant transformation of ovarian mature cystic teratoma into squamous cell carcinoma: a Taiwanese Gynecologic Oncology Group (TGOG) study

        Objective: The malignant transformation (MT) of ovarian mature cystic teratoma (MCT)to squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is very rare. This study analyzed cases from multiplemedical centers in Taiwan to investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics, treatment, andprognostic factors of this disease and reviewed related literature. Methods: Pathological reports of 16,001 patients with primary ovarian cancer who weretreated at Taiwan medical centers from 1990 to 2011 were reviewed. In total, 52 patients withMT of MCT to SCC were identified. Results: Among all ovarian MCTs, the incidence of MT to SCC is 0.2%. The median age ofpatients was 52 years (range, 29–89 years), and the mean tumor size was 10.5 cm (range, 1–40cm). We analyzed the patients in our study and those in the literature and determined thatearly identification and complete surgical resection of the tumor are essential for long-termsurvival. In addition, adjuvant chemotherapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy can be usedto treat this malignancy. Old age, large tumor size (≥15.0 cm), and solid components in MCTsare suitable indicators predicting the risk of MT of MCT to SCC. Conclusion: Similar to general epithelial ovarian cancers, the early detection of MT of MCTto SCC is critical to long-term survival. Therefore, older patients with a large tumor or those with a tumor containing a solid component in a clinically diagnosed MCT should beevaluated to exclude potential MT to SCC.

        Impact of Platelet Function Test on Platelet Responsiveness and Clinical Outcome After Coronary Stent Implantation: Platelet Responsiveness and Clinical Outcome

        Background and Objectives: The aim of this study was to confirm the predictive cut-off values for P2Y12 reaction units (PRU) and aspirin reaction units (ARU) and to evaluate the clinical impact of VerifyNow® assays. Subjects and Methods: From November 2007 to October 2009, 186 eligible patients were prospectively recruited. Post-treatment platelet reactivity was measured by VerifyNow® assays within 12 to 24 hours after intervention, followed by standard dual maintenance dose therapy for 1 year. All patients had scheduled clinical follow-ups at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. Results: The rate of low responders to clopidogrel, aspirin, and both drugs were 41.4%, 10.2%, and 3.8%, respectively. The predictive fac-tors for low responsiveness to clopidogrel (PRU ≥240) were female sex, age, and non-use of cilostazol medication in our univariate analysis and age ≥65 years and non-use cilostazol in the multivariate analysis. The predictors of low responsiveness to aspirin (ARU ≥550) were male sex and age in both univariate and multivariate analyses. There was no significant difference in the clinical event rate with a cut-off value of PRU ≥240 or ARU ≥550 for 30 days and 1-year (p>0.05). Conclusion: Hyporesponsiveness to antiplatelet agents (namely aspirin and clopidogrel) was identified in about half of the patients. The cut-off point of PRU ≥240 or ARU ≥550 did not confer predictive value for 30-day or 1-year clinical event rates in patients who had un-dergone coronary intervention with drug-eluting stents.

        Comparison of Physicochemical Characteristics of Hot-boned Chicken Breast and Leg Muscles during Storage at 20oC

        The aim of this study was to compare the physicochemical changes of hot-boned chicken breast and leg muscles. Chicken breast and leg muscles from 56 broilers were excised within a 15 min post-mortem (PM) and stored at 20oC. Physicochemical traits were determined at 0.5, 6, 12, and 24 h PM. The ultimate pH of leg muscle was higher than that of breast muscle (p<0.05). The content of glycogen in the breast muscle was relatively higher than that in the leg muscle until 6 h PM (p<0.05). R-values showing rigor mortis of breast and leg muscles were completed after or before 6 h PM. Breast muscle had less cooking loss than leg muscle (p<0.05). Drip loss did not significantly differ between breast and leg muscles with the exception of that at 6 h PM. The sarcomere length of leg muscle was relatively longer than that of breast muscle (p<0.05). The MFI of leg muscle was significantly lower than that of breast muscle (p<0.05). The shear force of leg muscle was lower than that of breast muscle at 6 and 12 h PM (p<0.05); however, that of both muscles did not significantly differ at 24 h PM.

        High Plasma Levels of the B-type Natriuretic Peptide in Patients Without Heart Failure: Is There Clinical Significance?

        We report a case of a 19-year-old female with an elevated plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) level, but without evidence of heart failure (HF). She presented with non-specific chest pain and a high level of the B-type natriuretic peptide, despite having unremarkable findings on physical examination, laboratory analysis, electrocardiogram,echocardiogram, chest X-ray, chest computed tomography, whole body scan, and coronary angiography. We attribute this finding to a genetic variation in the synthesis and cleavage of the natriuretic peptides.

        Effects of Post-mortem Temperature on the Physicochemical Properties of Hot-boned Chicken Breast Muscles

        The objective of this study was to examine the effects of high and low chilling temperature on the water-holding capacity (WHC) and tenderness of hot-boned breast meat of broiler chickens. Breast meat was obtained from 32 broiler chickens within 15 min post-mortem (PM), and then divided into two groups. One group was chilled at -1℃ and the other group was stored at 30℃ for 3 hr, and then all the samples were chilled at 2℃ until 24 hr PM. During the storage, their physicochemical characteristics were tested at 15 min, 3 hr and 24 hr PM. These included pH, R-values, cooking losses, sarcomere length, MFI, and shear force of the breast meat, none of which was different (p>0.05) between the two temperature treatments at -1℃ and 30℃. However, sarcomere length was shortened more at -1℃ than at 30℃, MFI was larger at 30℃ than at -1℃, drip loss was greater at 30oC than at -1℃, and WHC was lower at 30℃ than at -1℃ (p<0.05). In brief, in terms of yield and tenderness, broiler breast meat stored at -1℃ was superior to that stored at 30℃.         A Novel Algorithm of Joint Probability Data Association Based on Loss Function

        In this paper, a joint probabilistic data association algorithm based on loss function (LJPDA) is proposed so that the computation load and accuracy of the multi-target tracking algorithm can be guaranteed simultaneously. Firstly, data association is divided in to three cases based on the relationship among validation gates and the number of measurements in the overlapping area for validation gates. Also the contribution coefficient is employed for evaluating the contribution of a measurement to a target, and the loss function, which reflects the cost of the new proposed data association algorithm, is defined. Moreover, the equation set of optimal contribution coefficient is given by minimizing the loss function, and the optimal contribution coefficient can be attained by using the Newton-Raphson method. In this way, the weighted value of each target can be achieved, and the data association among measurements and tracks can be realized. Finally, we compare performances of LJPDA proposed and joint probabilistic data association (JPDA) algorithm via numerical simulations, and much attention is paid on real-time performance and estimation error. Theoretical analysis and experimental results reveal that the LJPDA algorithm proposed exhibits small estimation error and low computation complexity.

        Electronic Structure, Phase Transition, and Elastic Properties of ScC under High Pressure

        The structural properties and the phase transition for scandium carbide (ScC) have been studied in NaCl (B1), CsCl (B2), ZB (B3), WZ (B4), NiAs (B81), WC (Bh), and Pmmn structures by using the pseudopotential plane-wave method in the framework of the density functional theory. Our theoretical results show that the most stable structure is the B1 phase, contrary to the result of Rahim et al. The phase transitions B1 ! Pmmn and Pmmn ! B2 are predicted at 83.7 and 109.7 GPa, respectively. At the same time, we find that the B3, B4, B81, and Bh phases are not stable over the whole pressure range considered. In particular, the elastic constants of Pmmn-ScC under high pressure are obtained successfully. The effects of pressure on the elastic properties of B1-ScC and Pmmn-ScC are also predicted. The Debye temperatures and the sound velocities of these two structures are estimated from the elastic constants, and by analyzing G/B, the brittle-ductile behavior of ScC is assessed. In addition, the density of states of B1-ScC at high pressures is also discussed.

        CD64 Expression Is Increased in Patients with Severe Acute Pancreatitis: Clinical Significance

        Background/Aims: Upregulated CD64 expression on neutrophils is the most useful marker for acute bacterial infections and systemic inflammation. However, it is unknown whether CD64 is involved in the pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis (AP). This study was designed to determine whether CD64 is implicated in severe acute pancreatitis (SAP), and thus, is a suitable marker for SAP. Methods: SAP was induced in rats with an intraperitoneal injection of L-arginine. CD64 expression in the rat pancreas was determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) and immunohistochemistry. Additionally, the CD64 mRNA expression in peripheral blood leukocytes from 21 patients with mild acute pancreatitis (MAP) and 10 patients with SAP was investigated at the time of admission and during remission by qRT-PCR. Results: CD64 mRNA and protein expression in the pancreas was significantly higher in rats with SAP, compared to the controls. The CD64 expression was higher in the patients with SAP than in the patients with MAP. During remission, CD64 mRNA decreased in both the MAP and SAP patients. The area under the curve of CD64 expression for the detection of SAP was superior to both the Ranson and the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II scores. Conclusions: The CD64 level was significantly increased in correlation with the disease severity in SAP and may act as a useful marker for predicting the development of SAP.
