The pathobiologic process of arterial stenosis following balloon angioplasty continues to be an enigmatic problem in clinical settings. This study investigates the ability of demethoxycurcumin, a curcuminoid isolated from Radix Curcumae, to attenuate balloon injury-induced neointima(NI) formation in the rat carotid artery. It was found that demethoxycurcumin induced inducible heme oxygenase(HO-1) expression and inhibited dose-dependently cellular proliferation in rat vascular smooth muscle cells. Perivascular application of demethoxycurcumin immediately following injury significantly reduced NI area and NI thickness 2 weeks post-injury. Interestingly, treatment with tin-protoporphyrin IX, a HO inhibitor, reversed the effects of demethoxycurcumin on NI formation. These results implicate demethoxycurcumin as a potent new therapeutic agent that is capable of reducing post-angioplasty arterial stenosis through induction of the HO-1 expression.

This paper develops a design technique for approximating nonseparable frequency characteristics by sums and products of separable transfer functions. Therefore nonseparable frequency characteristics includes the four-quadrant symmetry filters. The desired filter with half plan symmetry is obtained by shifting a low pass characteristic in the frequency domain, and by combining these shifted characteristics. Also the paper develops the technique for designing recursive and nonrecursive two dimensional digital filters by the application of a complex transformation to one dimensional low pass filter.

『황무지』의 언어 무의식

The Waste Land has been read from different approaches and in diverse ways. The body of criticism on this poem from a psychoanalytic viewpoint, however, is not as copious as that of other approaches. One reason why there is very scanty body of criticism on this poem from a psychoanalytic approach is that Eliot himself has evinced a strong aversion to psychoanalysis. In my opinion, the fact that Eliot himself did not like psychoanalysis will be the stronger reason for us to read it form such an approach. Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytic theory, however, can be a great help in reading The Waste Land in this respect, because Lacanian approach emphasizes the linguistic aspect of the unconscious. The Waste Land is very amenable to the Lacanian psychoanalysis because Lacan basically considers e unconscious to be structured like a language. The poem demonstrates that it is a text of the linguistic unconscious from the beginning by its two quotations-one of the sybil, and the other for Ezra Pound. These two quotations show that the unconscious of the poem is situated at the locus of the conflict between the imaginary and the symbolic. Many gaps in the poem itself prove that this assumption is not far from the truth.

The art of Nam June Paik deserves our special attention when we talk about postmodern art. His art defies and, at the same time, embraces main characteristics of postmodernism. He can be described as a postmodern artist in that in his art he freely uses postmodern elements as his material. In this respect, his video art is one of the most renovating art forms of the postmodern era. What makes him stand out, however, as one of the foremost postmodern artists is that in his video art, for which he has earned the reputation of being the first video artist in the world, he uses highly advanced and still developing high-tech computer technology. In this regard his video art will be expanding as long as electronics and computer science are developing in the future. Even though Paik is utilizing state-of-the-art computer technology in his video art, he refuses to recklessly borrow from or copy other artists. He is unique in the sense that while he takes advantage of Western technology in his video art, he freely uses Korean and Oriental motifs for his art. This is his grammar of postmodernism. As he once said, therefore, his video art will be ever new as long as he is ready to adapt ever-advancing computer technology to his art.

3차 Cumulant를 이용한 블라인드 등화 알고리즘의 성능분석

본 논문에서는 고차 통계인 3차 cumulant에 근거한 기존의 블라인드 등화 알고리즘을 개선한 새로운 방법을 제안하였다. 제안된 알고리즘은 블럭 단위로 3차 cumulant를 추정하는 현재의 방식과는 달리, 매 샘플 단위로 이를 계산하여 적은 양의 데이터를 가지고도 빠른 수렴속도와 우수한 수렴특성을 보인다. 특히 데이터의 전송 중 채널의 특성이 변하는 Nonstationary 환경에서는 3차 cumulant를 추정하는데 빠른 수렴속도가 요구되고, 따라서 이 경우 제안된 알고리즘은 매우 유용하게 적용될 수 있다. 제안된 알고리즘의 유용성을 검증하기 위하여 컴퓨터 모의실험을 수행하였으며, 선형 시불변이고 비최소 위상을 갖는 채널 모델과 4-ary PAM 신호에 대해 제안된 알고리즘의 우수성을 확인하였다.

The magnetization characteristics of a transformer or a nonlinear reactor is analyzed in this paper. The analytic expression for the dynamic hysteresis loop which is divided into the saturation part and the loss part is expressed using the four term polynominal approximation. The coefficients of this expression are determined from the rms saturation curve and no load loss. The energy expression associated with the dynamic hysteresis loop is modified by introducing the correction factor K. The validity of the proposed technique is verified by the experimental results.

글쓰기로서의 시쓰기 : 셰익스피어의 《소네트 시집》에 나타난 메타-시적(meta-poetic) 요소

In attempting to read Shakespeare's Sonnets in a way different from the ways of the past, I begin my argument by quoting T.S. Eliot: About anyone so great as Shakespeare, it is probable that we can never be right; and if we can never be right, it is better that we should from time to time change our way of being wrong. Therefore, my reading of the Sonnets is, in a sense, one more "way of being wrong." There is a possibility, rather, a great probability, however, that my reading may prove to be right in a wrong way and/or wrong in the right way. Many critics have so far read the Sonnets as representing some aspects of Shakespeare's life. As Stephen Booth denies such claims to validity emphatically and categorically, this representational mode of interpretation of the Sonnets is shot through with many holes in it. The time has come for us to try a new way of reading the Sonnets by throwing out the old-fashioned method of representational interpretation. My reading of the Sonnets is in essence deconstructive in that I don't see any connection between some elements in the Sonnets and those in Shakespeare's life. What I am trying to say is that Shakespeare was writing the Sonnets as ecriture. Therefore the fair young man and the dark lady are pure literary creations, as Booth claims. Just as Shakespeare urged the young man to marry so that his youth could be preserved through his male offspring, Shakespeare may have wanted to preserve his Sonnets by way of writing a meta-poetic ecritare.

Riboflavin(Vitamin B_2) is a component of two closely related coenzymes, flavin mononucleotide(FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide(FAD). Riboflavin tetrabutyrate is more fat-soluble than riboflavin, which is highly absorbed in vivo. and hydrolysed to give riboflavin. Riboflavin tetrabutyrate has always been synthesized by general method of ester. But the use of DMAP was found be very effective for esterification of riboflavin with butyric acid.

격변기의 가치관의 혼란과 T.S. Eliot의 신비주의

T.S. Eliot, a major Twentieth-Century English poet, has witnessed and lived through the cataclysmic changes represented and caused by the two World Wars. These turbulent times have caused him to see through the futility of human existence in the spiritual Waste Land of his own making and search for meaning in life. His tendency to search for meaning takes on the quality of mysticism. In this paper I try to show that Eliot`s mystical tendency is a major factor throughout his life and is found in many of his works. In the early stages of the development, his mystical tendency finds its way in his critical concepts such as objective correlative, immediate experience, and the impersonality of poetry. What he wants to do in these concepts is to spatialize, visualize, and fix time through concept in that tradition presupposes synchronic existence of the past in the present. His later ideas such as still point and pattern, however, are contingent upon the idea of the Incarnation of Christ in time, and in this respect they are qualitatively different from his earlier critical concepts. In his later stage, Eliot sees the importance of history as a meeting of time with the timeless in pattern and still point. This is possible only through the mediation of the Incarnated Christ. These ideas are very clearly shown in Murder in the Cathedral and Four Quartets. Even though Eliot`s Christian mystical element is prominent in his later period (especially after his conversion to Anglican Church in 1927), we should not overlook the importance of the Oriental influences in his mystical tendency. For instance, the absence of ego (self) found in his impersonal theory of poetry in the early stage of his life is still found in his later poem Four Quartets. This means that the Buddhistic and Hinduistic elements have stayed with him throughout his life. We should also remember that mysticism to Eliot is not rejecting this world and seeking after refuge in the other world. His mysticism is firmly based on "here" and "now", and this "here" and "now" is the backbone of his "always". The fact that he uses concrete images throughout his poetry bears this out.
