Background & Objectives:Transient global amnesia (TGA) is a clinical syndrome characterized by sudden memory loss of recent events, transient inability to retain new information, and retrograde amnesia in the absence of other neurological signs and symptoms, resolving within 24 hours. This study investigated alterations in regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in patients with TGA by using statistical parametric mapping 99 (SPM99). Methods:5 patients with TGA and 9 age-matched normal control subjects were evaluated. Tc-99m-ethyl cysteinate dimer (ECD) SPECT were performed within 1 to 4 days of the event to measure the regional CBF, and SPM99 were applied to the objective analysis of SPECT data between two groups. Follow-up ECD SPECT was done at 49 to 107 days (mean 76.8) after the previous SPECT to evaluate the long term changes of the regional CBF. Results:The SPM analysis of SPECT images revealed significantly decreased rCBF in the left superior temporal gyrus, the left parietal supramarginal gyrus and the left thalamus (corrected p=0.01) and increased CBF in the contralateral mirror regions in patients with TGA. Follow-up SPECT showed persistent rCBF changes in the same regions. Conclusions:We demonstrate decreased perfusion in the left cerebral hemisphere and increased perfusion in the right cerebral hemisphere in patients with TGA. This reciprocal change of rCBF might suggest that imbalanced neuronal activity between two hemispheres may be important in the pathogenesis of the TGA. Also, the abnormal rCBF changes appeared to last long after the complete recovery of clinical manifestation of TGA.

Aplastic anemia is a disease characterized by pancytopenia in the peripheral blood and hypocellular bone marrow with the fatty infiltration. The causes of the acquired aplastic anemia were usually related to drugs and immune-related diseases. A 34-years old man was admitted due to general weakness. He has been going hemodialysis for 2 years because of end stage renal disease (ESRD) due to chronic glomerulonephritis. At admission, laboratory tests showed hemoglobin 6.2 g/dL, hematocrit 18.0 %, WBC 5,710mm (neutrophil 71.8%, lymphocyte 19.1%, monocyte 5.9%), reticulocyte 1.9%, platelet 93,000/mm, Fe 12.8 ug/dL, TIBC 204 ug/dL, ferritin 941.47 ng /ml, haptoglobin 0.72 g/L, vitamin B12 508.17 pmol/L, folate 24 ng/mL, total protein 6.54 g/dL, albumin 3.76 g/dL, Alk. pohsphatase 79 IU/L, AST 30.0 IU/L, ALT 39.7 IU/L, total bilirubin 0.57 mg/dl, BUN 79.4 mg/dl and creatinine 10.18 mg/dl. Peripheral blood smear showed the normocytic normochromic anemia with anisocytosis. Anemia was diagnosed but it was irresponsive to the recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) and blood transfusion. In the bone marrow aspiration smear were there the hypoplastic myeloid and erythroid precursors. The bone marrow biopsy section showed the hypoplasia of all components (10-20%) and the fatty infiltration. We have experienced one case of the idiopathic aplastic anemia in a patient going through hemodialysis and we just report it with documentary records. 저자들은 혈액 투석 중인 환자에서 약물, 면역계 이상등의 원인을 발견할 수 없었음에도 재생 불량성 빈혈이 발생한 1예를 경험하여 문헌 고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다.

To investigate the effects of ethanol on the lipid metabolism in blood and liver, twenty one male Sprague Dawley rats had orally taken the 25% alcohol and 50% alcohol by 5g per Kg of weight during 3 weeks after the adjusting period. For the energy balance, 85% sucrose and 45% sucrose was added in control group and 25% alcohol group each. The weight was reduced by alcohol treatment according to the levels, otherwise the weight of liver and heart was little increased in alcohol groups rather than in control without significance. Moreover, RBC, WBC, hemoglobin and hematocrit were increased by alcohol treatment according to the levels without significance. Otherwise, adjusted bilirubin levels by 100g of weight was significantly increased by alcohol treatment dose dependently. Alcohol induced RBC degradation and increased circulated bilirubin because of liver damage. For blood lipid profiles, blood cholesterol was increased in 50% of alcohol group compared to that of 25% and control groups, otherwise, blood triglycerides (TG) was increased by 30% in 25% alcohol groups rather than in control but not significantly different. The hepatic lipid composition, cholesterol levels in alcohol treatment groups was lower than those in control. The hepatic TG was not influenced by alcohol treatment. The two reasons of decreasing hepatic lipids were suggested by 85% sucrose of control for energy balance more synthesized cholesterol and TG than those in 25 or 50% alcohol groups, and by cholesterol and TG could not be synthesized because of liver damage from alcohol.

<P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>Protein cages are promising nanoplatform candidates for efficient delivery systems due to their homogenous size and structure with high biocompatibility and biodegradability. In this study, we investigate the potential of lumazine synthase protein cage as an antigen delivery system to dendritic cells (DCs), which induce antigen-specific T cell proliferation.</P><P><B>Materials and Methods</B></P><P>Ovalbumin (OVA) peptides OT-1 (SIINFEKL) and OT-2 (ISQAVHAAHAEINEAGR) were genetically inserted to lumazine synthase and each protein cage was over-expressed in <I>Escherichia coli</I> as a soluble protein. The efficiency of antigen delivery and the resulting antigen-specific T cell proliferation by DCs was examined <I>in vitro</I> as well as <I>in vivo</I>.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>We successfully generated and characterized OVA peptides carrying lumazine synthase protein cages. The OT-1 and OT-2 peptides carried by lumazine synthases were efficiently delivered and processed by DCs <I>in vitro</I> as well as <I>in vivo</I>, and induced proliferation of OT-1-specific CD8<SUP>+</SUP>T cells and OT-2-specific CD4<SUP>+</SUP>T cells.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Our data demonstrate the potential of lumazine synthase protein cage being used as a novel antigen delivery system for DC-based vaccine development in future clinical applications.</P>

<P>This study is designed to determine the effect of collagen membrane (CM) soaked with bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) for the treatment of peri-implant dehiscence defects.<I> Material and Methods</I>. Three treatment groups were allocated at each defect in 5 dogs: (i) collagenated synthetic bone (OC) and CM soaked with rhBMP-2 (BMP group), (ii) OC and CM soaked with saline (nonBMP group), and (iii) no further treatment (control group). Titanium pins were used to stabilize the membranes in two dogs. Radiographic and histomorphometric analyses were performed 4 weeks later.<I> Results</I>. The median augmented volumes were 4.27 mm<SUP>3</SUP>, 6.24 mm<SUP>3</SUP>, and 2.75 mm<SUP>3</SUP> in the BMP, nonBMP, and control groups, respectively; the corresponding median first bone-to-implant contact (fBIC) distances were 3.25 mm, 3.08 mm, and 2.56 mm (<I>P</I> > 0.05). The placement of pins (with the BMP and nonBMP groups pooled) significantly improved bone regeneration: the augmented volumes were 17.60 mm<SUP>3</SUP> with pins and 3.68 mm<SUP>3</SUP> without pins (<I>P</I> = 0.024), with corresponding fBIC distances of 2.25 mm and 3.31 mm, respectively (<I>P</I> < 0.001).<I> Conclusions</I>. The addition of rhBMP-2 to CM failed to improve bone regeneration of peri-implant dehiscence defects compared to using an unsoaked CM after 4 weeks. However, the stabilization of CMs using pins positively influenced the outcomes.</P>
