        개의 비강 내 이행암종 증례

        A 10-year-old female Yorkshire terrier with the clinical signs of nasal swelling, epistaxis and nasal discharge was presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital in the Cheju National University. Abnormal nasal mass was detected in physical examination and radiographic findings. After surgical excision, the sample of nasal mass was referred to Pathology Department of Veterinary Medicine. Grossly, the mass was soft, friable, and $2.5{\times}4cm$ cm in size. Histopathologically, the mass was composed of mediumsized non-keratinizing columnar to polyhedral cells arranged in anastomosing ribbon and large nest. It has complex in-folding of thick epithelial layers separated by fibrovascular septa. Tumor cells showed characteristic palisading arrangement of columnar cells, and perpendicularly distributed to the basement membrane. The cells had pale basophilic cytoplasm, oval nucleus and one or more nucleoli, and indistinct cellular border. Many tumor cell emboli were presented in lymphatics. Immunohistochemistry revealed that tumor cells were cytokeratin (CK) 19 and CK clone MNF116 positive and but CK7 and CK high molecular weight negative. Based on the gross, histopathologic, and immunohistochemical findings, the mass was diagnosed as transitional carcinoma in nasal cavity. In our best knowledge, this is the first report of transitional carcinoma originated from transitional zone of canine nasal cavity in Korea.

        The diagnostic requirements were suggested and explained regarding the systems of differentiation of symptoms and signs in the third year study of standardization and unification of the terms and conditions used for diagnosis in oriental medicine. The systems were as follows : - analyzing and differentiating of epidemic febrile disease - analyzing and differentiating in accordance with the Sasang constitution medicine based on four-type recognition - differentiation of disease according to pathological changes of Chong and Ren channels - standards for diagnosis of women's disease - standards for diagnosis of children's disease - standards for diagnosis of motor and sensor disturbance (-muscle. born, joint, etc.) - standards for diagnosis of neuropsychiatric disease - standards for diagnosis of five sense organ disease - standards for diagnosis of external disease The indivisual diagnosis pattern was arranged by the diagnostic requirements in the following order : another name, notion of diagnosis pattern, index of differentiation of symptoms and signs, the main point of diagnosis, analysis of diagnosis pattern, discrimination of diagnosis pattern, prognosis, a way of curing a disease, prescription, herbs in common use, disease appearing the diagnosis pattern, documents. The standards for diagnosis of each disease was arranged by the diagnostic requirements in the following order : another name, notion of disease, the main point of diagnosis, analyzing and differentiating of disease, analysis of disease, discrimination of disease, prognosis, a way of curing and prescription of disease, disease in western medicine appearing the disease in oriental medicine, documents.

      • 천장관절의 세균감염에 대한 임상적 고찰

        The sacroiliac joint is, as other joints, the predilection site of tuberculous or pyogenic infection. Twenty cases of sacroiliac joint infection were seen and treated at our depar-tment during the 11 years and 7 months from July, 1964 to February, 1976. These studies were analyzed clinically and the following results were obtained. 1. Among the 20 cases, 9 cases were tuberculous infection, 8 cases were mixed infection and 3 cases were pyogenic infection. 2. Sex distribution showed 9 males and 11 females. Age distribution was from 7 years to. 43 years (average: 22 years) with the peak incidence in the second and third decade of life. 3. Mode of onset was chronic in tuberculous, while acute in pyogenic infec-tion. 4. Clinical findings were pain and tenderness at the sacroiliac joint region in- all cases. High fever was seen in all of the cases. of pyogenic infection, 5 of the 8 cases of mixed infection and in 2 of the 9 cases of tuberculous infection. 5. E.S.R. was increased in all cases except one case of tuberculous infection, while leukocytosis was not a consistent finding. 6. Various treatments were carried out in all cases. These included immobili-zation, antibiotics, antituberculous chemotherapy, incision and drainage, and cu-rettage with or without fusion of joint.

        Role of Carotid Artery Stenting in Prevention of Stroke for Asymptomatic Carotid Stenosis: Bayesian Cross-Design and Network Meta-Analyses

        Background and Objectives: There is insufficient evidence regarding the optimal treatment for asymptomatic carotid stenosis. Methods: Bayesian cross-design and network meta-analyses were performed to compare the safety and efficacy among carotid artery stenting (CAS), carotid endarterectomy (CEA), and medical treatment (MT). We identified 18 studies (4 randomized controlled trials [RCTs] and 14 nonrandomized, comparative studies [NRCSs]) comparing CAS with CEA, and 4 RCTs comparing CEA with MT from MEDLINE, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases. Results: The risk for periprocedural stroke tended to increase in CAS, compared to CEA (odds ratio [OR], 1.86; 95% credible interval [CrI], 0.62–4.54). However, estimates for periprocedural myocardial infarction (MI) were quite heterogeneous in RCTs and NRCSs. Despite a trend of decreased risk with CAS in RCTs (OR, 0.70; 95% CrI, 0.27–1.24), the risk was similar in NRCSs (OR, 1.02; 95% CrI, 0.87–1.18). In indirect comparisons of MT and CAS, MT showed a tendency to have a higher risk for the composite of periprocedural death, stroke, MI, or nonperiprocedural ipsilateral stroke (OR, 1.30; 95% CrI, 0.74–2.73). Analyses of study characteristics showed that CEA-versus-MT studies took place about 10-year earlier than CEA-versus-CAS studies. Conclusions: A similar risk for periprocedural MI between CEA and CAS in NRCSs suggested that concerns about periprocedural MI accompanied by CEA might not matter in real-world practice when preoperative evaluation and management are working. Maybe the benefits of CAS over MT have been overestimated considering advances in medical therapy within10-year gap between CEA-versus-MT and CEA-versus-CAS studies.

        Multicentric T cell lymphosarcoma in a Jeju native boar

        A 7-year-old Jeju native boar was requested to the Veterinary Pathology Laboratory of Cheju National University with a clinical signs of anorexia, melena, lethargy and sudden death. At necropsy, four coalescing firm masses were occupied in the abdominal cavity between ventral surface of stomach and pancreas. Individual mass was a yellowish white in color and up to 6 cm in diameter. These masses were not encapsulated and bulged from the cut surface. Liver and spleen were enlarged and pale nodules were presented in these tissues. Some yellowish white nodules up to 5 mm in diameter were scattered in kidneys. Histopathologically, lymphoblastic tumor cells were occupied in the abdominal masses, multifocal areas of liver, kidneys, and spleen. Morphologically lymphoblastic tumor cells were round to oval in shape, and medium to large in size. They had round to oval nuclei, moderate amount of eosinophilic cytoplasm, and many mitotic figures. Immunohistochemistry revealed that tumor cells were CD3-positive and $CD79{\alpha}$-negative, consistent with T-cell lineage. Based on gross, microscopic findings and immunohistochemistry, this case was diagnosed as porcine multi-centric T cell lymphosarcoma. In animals, as in human, the T-cell lymphomas are generally more aggressive than B cell types and respond less well to therapy. In our best knowledge, this is the first report for porcine T cell lymphosarcoma in Korea.

      • A case of metastatic colonic adenocarcinoma in German shepherd

        Intestinal acleilocaciilomas are uncoinmon in dogs, ancl they occur most frecluently in the colon ancl rectum of animals averaging 8-9 years old. Also, they have been reported rarely in cattle, goats, horses ancl swine.This tumors occur slightly higher in males than in females. Boxers, collies, poodles, ancl Gennan shepherds are prediposed. A case of nletastatic colonic adenocarcinoma in a 7-year-old, male, German shepherd. This clog shows progressive weight loss, persistent vomiting and diarrhea, anorexia, and emaciation. Other clinical sign was tenesmus. Glossly, the serosa of colon and mesentery contained gray-white, firm tissue mass which measured approximately 10 X 4 X 3 cm. Spleen has protruded pale red rouilcl to oval mass which is 2 to 50 nlm in cliam~eter. The milky yellow nodules ranging from 2 to 5 mm, were scattered in liver. Pancreas was stickly attached with stomach and peritoneum ancl has firm nodular nmass which is 15 X 5 X 5 cm. Microscopically, the tumor of colon was characterized by solid sheets or nests of well-differentiated to highly anaplastic polyheclral, cuboidal columnar epithelial cells, which form irregular acinar stnlctures. The neoplastic cells infiltrated into the sul~mucosa, the n~uscularis ancl the serosa along lymphatics and vessels. Metastases occurred in stomach, lymph nodes spleen and liver. Basecl on the gross findings ancl histopathologic examination. this tumor was diagnosed as colonic aclenoc,arcinoma.

        Genetic and pathogenic characterization of Akabane viruses isolated from cattle with encephalomyelitis in Korea

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A large-scale outbreak of Akabane viral encephalomyelitis in cattle was reported in the southern part of Korea in 2010. Fifteen Akabane virus (AKAV) strains were isolated from the brain and spinal cord samples by using BHK-21 and/or HmLu-1 cells. To examine the genetic relationships and characteristics of the isolates, nucleotide sequences of the S, M, and L segments of the 15 isolates were determined and analyzed. Complete sequence analysis of the 15 AKAV isolates showed 99.9–100% amino acid identities, indicating that the 15 isolates originated from a single strain. The S and M RNA segments of a representative isolate (AKAV-7/SKR/2010) were also compared with the segments of representative reference sequences. This AKAV-7/SKR/2010 strain showed the highest identity with the Iriki and KM-1/Br/06 strains. Neighbor-joining phylogenetic trees of S and M RNA segments were constructed. Four representative AKAV isolates were classified into subgroup Ia, which contains the Iriki and KM-1/Br/06 strains recognized to cause encephalomyelitis in calves and adult cattle in Japan. Moreover, experimental intraperitoneal infection was performed using the AKAV-7/SKR/2010 and AKAV-17/SKR/2010 strains to assess pathogenesis in suckling mice. The 2 isolates, genetically related to the Iriki strain, were neurovirulent and caused neurological signs in suckling mice. In contrast, the 93FMX strain and the K0505 strain, related to the OBE-1 strain, were avirulent in mice. The present results indicate that these isolates most likely had originated from the Iriki strain and are closely related to the Iriki strain both genetically and pathogenically.</P>

        <P>Angiotensin II exerts its central nervous system effects primarily via its receptors AT1 and AT2, and it participates in the pathogenesis of ischemia via AT1. The selective AT1 receptor blocker (ARB) is used in the hypertension treatment, and it exerts a variety of pleiotropic effects, including antioxidative, antiapoptotic, and anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, we investigated the therapeutic effect of the ARB telmisartan in experimental intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) in normotensive rats. ICH was induced via the collagenase infusion or autologous blood injection. Either telmisartan at 30 mg/kg/dose or phosphate-buffered saline was orally administered 2 h after ICH induction. We evaluated hemorrhage volume, brain water content, and functional recovery, and we performed the histological analysis for terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick-end labeling, leukocyte infiltration, and microglia activation. A variety of intracellular signals, in terms of oxidative stress, apoptotic molecules, and inflammatory mediators, were also measured. Telmisartan reduced hemorrhage volume, brain edema, and inflammatory or apoptotic cells in the perihematomal area. Telmisartan was noted to induce the expression of endothelial nitric-oxide synthase and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma and decrease oxidative stress, apoptotic signal, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and cyclooxygenase-2 expression. The telmisartan-treated rats exhibited less pronounced neurological deficits and recovered better. Thus, telmisartan seems to offer neural protection, including antiapoptosis, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant benefits in the intracerebral hemorrhage rat model.</P>

        국내 분리 porcine circovirus 2의 이유자돈에 대한 병원성 시험연구

        This study was carried out to investigate the pathogenesis and pathogenicity of the porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) Korean isolate from weaned pigs. Twenty four weaned pigs, PCV2, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) and porcine parvovirus (PPV) antibodies free, were allocated to 4 groups (n = 6). Six pigs were inoculated intranasally with PCV2 alone, 6 with PCV2 and PRRSV, 6 with the combined PCV2/PRRSV/PPV inoculum, and 6 were remained as a uninoculated negative control. Pigs were killed 3 and 6 weeks after inoculation and tissue samples examined for gross and microscopic lesions and for the presence of PCV2 antigens and nucleic acids. Experimentally inoculated pigs were evaluated for 3 considerations: 1. development of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS), 2. distribution of viral antigens by immunohistochemistry and polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and 3. cytokine mRNA levels in lymph nodes. Pigs inoculated with PCV2/PRRSV/PPV showed typical clinical signs, gross findings, and histopathologic characteristics of PMWS. In the PCV2/PRRSV/PPV inoculated group, the PCV2 antigen was widely distributed in various parenchymal organs such as brain, spinal cord, tonsil, lymph nodes, lung, heart, liver, kidney, spleen, and peyer's patch. Lymph node mRNA expression of IL-$1{\alpha}$, IL-2R and IL-8 was determined by real-time PCR. The pigs of PCV2/PRRSV and PCV2/PRRSV/PPV inoculation group, the mRNA expression was characterized by a decrease of IL-$1{\alpha}$, IL-2R and IL-8. The decrease of cytokine mRNA represent the state of T cell immuno-suppression in pig, and nicely support the evidence for the impairment of immune system in pigs with PMWS. In conclusion, PCV2 infection and some additional infectious causes such as PRRSV and/or PPV are warranted for the presence of PMWS in weaned pigs in Korea.

        개 전염성 기관기관지염에 대한 modified Live vaccine의 방어효과

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the protective effects of the modified live vaccines against canine Bordetella bronchiseptica(Bb) and canine parainfluenza virus(CPIV) in puppies by nasal administration. A total of 24 puppies were classified as 3 groups consisting of 8, and each one was divided into two subgroups; vaccinated (n=4) and unvaccinated(n=4). Group I, group II and group III were challenged with Bb, CPIV, and Bb+CPIV, respectively. In group I vaccinated puppies(n=4) were experi-mentally challenged with Bb 2 weeks after vaccination and unvaccinated puppies(n=4) were experimentally challenged with Bb alone. The same methods of the above were applied for group II and group III. We carried out several studies including serum tests, isolation, and histopathological examination. The vaccinated puppies showed higher antibody titers than unvaccinated puppies and the titer sustained during the experi-mental period. In the isolation test, recovery period was shorter in the vaccinated subgroup than in the other. In clinical signs, the unvaccinated puppies showed the typical signs of tracheobronchitis (coughing, nasal and occular discharge), but another subgroup showed delayed incidence and mild clinical signs. The typical gross lesions and histopathological findings were observed in the unvaccinated puppies. In immuno-histochemical findings, the vaccinated puppies showed little intensive in reaction for CPIV antigen than the other. It could be concluded that intranasal vaccination of modified live Bb and CPIV vaccine to puppies is effective to prevent canine infectious tracheo-bronchitis.
