Floristic study of Jang-do (Isl.) in Korea

We investigated the flora of Jang-do (Isl.), an island of the Heuksan archipelago, located in Heuksan-myeon, Shinan-gun, Jeollanam-do and discussed the remarkable plants found there. Thirteen-field trips (total 27 days) were completed from May of 2004 to May of 2013. As a result, we identified the distribution of 423 taxa in Jang-do (Isl.), comprising 104 families, 285 genera, 335 species, 78 varieties and 10 forms. There are a total of 95 taxa of floristic regional indicator plants. The floristic regional indicators are as follows; four taxa of level V such as Impatiens furcillata, four taxa of level IV such as Hosta yingeri, 14 taxa of level III such as Ophioglossum vulgatum, 5 taxa of level II, and 58 taxa of level I. In addition 10 red data plants, 2 vulnerable species (VU) including Calanthe striata for. sieboldii, and 4 least concern species (LC) like Ardisia crenata, 2 not evaluated species (NE) such as Hosta yingeri, were found in the investigated area. An unrecorded species, Fragaria (Rosaceae), was found in a forest of Jang-do (Isl.) for the first time in Korea.
Metabolic Profiling of Eccentric Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage in Human Urine

Skeletal muscle can be ultrastructurally damaged by eccentric exercise, and the damage causes metabolic disruption in muscle. This study aimed to determine changes in the metabolomic patterns in urine and metabolomic markers in muscle damage after eccentric exercise. Five men and 6 women aged 19~23 years performed 30 min of the bench step exercise at 70 steps per min at a determined step height of 110% of the lower leg length, and stepping frequency at 15 cycles per min. 1H NMR spectral analysis was performed in urine collected from all participants before and after eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage conventionally determined using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and maximal voluntary contraction (MVC). Urinary metabolic profiles were built by multivariate analysis of principal component analysis (PCA) and orthogonal partial least square-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) using SIMCA-P. From the OPLS-DA, men and women were separated 2 hr after the eccentric exercise and the separated patterns were maintained or clarified until 96 hr after the eccentric exercise. Subsequently, urinary metabolic profiles showed distinct trajectory patterns between men and women. Finally, we found increased urinary metabolites (men: alanine, asparagine, citrate, creatine phosphate, ethanol, formate, glucose, glycine, histidine, and lactate; women: adenine) after the eccentric exercise. These results could contribute to understanding metabolic responses following eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage in humans.

사구 종양은 사구체(glomus body)의 변형된 평활근 세포에서 유래하는 양성종양으로 일반적으로 사지 말단에서 발생하나, 위장관의 사구종양은 매우 드문 것으로 알려져 있다. 저자들은 건강 검진 시 우연히 발견된 위 상피하종양을 주소로 내원한 환자에서 내시경 초음파 검사 및 CT 검사 후 수술을 통해 조직학적으로 사구종양으로 확인된 세 증례를 경험하였다. 세 증례 모두 내시경 초음파에서 제 4층에서 국소적 고에코를 보이는 비균질성 저에코 병변이 관찰되었고, CT에서 강한 조영 증강 및 이러한 조영 증강이 지연기까지 지속되는 과혈관 종양의 특징적인 소견을 보였다. 이중 한 증례는 특징적으로 쿠션 양성 소견과 CT에서 석회화 소견을 보였다. 저자들은 세 증례에서 사구종양의 서로 다른 특성을 경험하였기에 보고하는 바이다. Glomus tumors originate in modified vascular smooth muscle cells and are most commonly found in the dermis or subcutis but are rarely observed in the stomach. We report three cases of patients who presented with incidental findings of subepithelial tumors in the stomach. One patient showed a positive cushion sign, and the others showed negative cushion signs. Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) demonstrated sharply demarcated hypoechoic tumors with internal hyperechoic spots in the fourth layer of the gastric wall and several hypoechoic halos around the tumors. Contrast-enhanced abdominal computerized tomography (CT) showed homogeneous high enhancement of tumors up to the delayed scan, and one case showed calcification in the tumor. For treatment, laparoscopic wedge resections were performed. Histological and immunochemical analysis of the tumor cells were compatible with glomus tumors. These characteristic findings in EUS and CT seem to be useful for the diagnosis of gastric glomus tumors.

수산물 중 포름알데히드 함량 수준을 평가하기 위하여 어류, 패류, 갑각류 및 연체류 14종을 비교 분석하였다. 수산물 중 포름알데히드 함량은 0.07 ㎎/㎏에서 최고 73.74 ㎎/㎏ 수준으로 측정되었다. 어류에서의 함량은 평균 1.29 ㎎/㎏, 패류에서의 함량은 평균 1.70 ㎎/㎏, 갑각류의 경우 평균 7.90 ㎎/㎏으로 어류와 패류에 비교해 유의적으로 높았으며, 특히 꽃게의 경우 최대 73.74㎎/㎏까지 함유되어 있었다. 연체류에서의 함량은 평균 3.06 ㎎/㎏수준으로 평가되었다. 유통형태에 따른 함량에서는 대체적으로 살아있는 상태로 유통되는 활어나 활패의 경우 냉장, 냉동 유통보다 낮은 함량을 보였다. 이는 포름알데히드가 사후에 여러 가지 복잡한 과정을 거쳐서 생성되는 것과 함께 수산물에 특이적인 물질인 TMAO가 사후 효소분해 등의 여러 기작을 통해 DMA와 포름알데히드로 분해되어 증가하기 때문인 것(18-21)으로 사료된다. ‘국민영양조사’와 ‘영양 및 위해평가 시스템 구축’ 연구 보고서를 참고하여 노출량 평가를 한 결과, 대상 수산물에 대한 한국인의 평균 일일 섭취량으로 섭취되는 포름알데히드는 0.070 ㎎/day로 ADI의 0.58% 수준밖에 되지 않았으며, 극단적인 섭취량 평가를 위한 99th 수준에서 섭취되는 포름알데히드는 1.574 ㎎/day로 ADI의 13.12%에 불과하여 안전한 수준이지만, 더 정확한 노출량 평가를 위해서는 다른 수산물을 포함한 식품에 대한 포름알데히드 함량의 조사와 더불어 섭취량 조사 또한 뒷받침되어야 할 것으로 판단된다. In this study, formaldehyde in various fisheries products was previously derivatized with acetylacetone and subsequently analyzed by using HPLC-PDA. The formaldehyde contents ranged from 0.07 to 73.74 ㎎/㎏. The compound was significantly higher in both mollusks (0.34-12.38 ㎎/㎏) and crustaceans (0.09-73.74 ㎎/㎏) than in fish (0.07-3.35 ㎎/㎏) and shellfish (0.50-3.90 ㎎/㎏). This difference was due to storage time and temperature. In general, fish and shellfish are sold live or in refrigerated form with shorter a shelf-life, but mollusks and crustaceans are distributed in cold or frozen systems with a longer shelf-life. Using food intake data from a report of the National Health and Nutrition Survey, the daily human exposure level to formaldehyde was 0.58% of the ADI. The results from this study might provide fundamental information to confirm naturally-originating or fraudulent formaldehyde treatment in fisheries products.

In this study, the effect of compressive loading of carbon nanotube (CNT) mixed cement composites was investigated. To evaluate the electrical resistivity variation of 30%∼60% of compressive load of cement composites containing 1.0% CNT, 1.0% CNT was added to cement composites and compressive strength was calculated. The greater the change in electrical resistance to compressive load, the more vulnerable to internal conductive networks. Also, as the amount of CNT mixed increases, the electrical resistance to the load is more sensitive and it is expected to be mixed more than 1.0%.
