Little is known about antibiotic-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) intestinal carriage among healthcare workers (HCWs) in Vietnam. All HCWs at a tertiary intensive care units were asked to undertake weekly rectal swabs. Among 40 participants, 65% (26/40) carried extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL)/AmpC β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli. Two HCWs colonized with ESBL/AmpC β-lactamase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae. One HCW colonized with Acinetobacter baumannii. No one carried Pseudomonas spp.. A quarter (10/40) of HCWs were identified as persistent and frequent carriers. There is an urgent need to screen antibiotic-resistant GNB among HCWs and improve HCWs’ hand hygiene compliance to reduce the transmission of antibiotic-resistant GNB in the hospital.

Bich Nam Jung,Jin-Kie Shim,Sung Wook Hwang 한국포장학회 2018 한국포장학회지 Vol.24 No.3
Low density polyethylene (LDPE) has been researched in many industrial applications, and LDPE/zeolite 4A composites has been extensively studied for many applications such as microporous, breathable film and so on. LDPE/ zeolite composite have a great potential for carbon dioxide adsorption film due to its high adsorption ability. In this study, LDPE/zeolite 4A composites with various contents were prepared by melt mixing process, and co-extrusion process was applied to develop a CO2 adsorption conventional film and foamed film. The thermal, rheological, mechanical, physical and morphological properties of composite films has been characterized, and CO2 adsorption of the composite films evaluated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and the performance was found to be about 18 cc/g at 30.9 wt% of the zeolite content.
Presidential Turnover and Discontinuity in the Philippines’ China Policy
Bich T. Tran 경남대학교 극동문제연구소 2019 ASIAN PERSPECTIVE Vol.43 No.4
Philippines-China relations have experienced dramatic turns, from a “golden age” to “Asia’s most toxic bilateral relationship,” followed by a new “spring time,” as described by the media. Why does the Philippines’ China policy oscillate so much? This article looks at the role of the president in the Philippines’ foreign policymaking by examining the country’s China policy under the leadership of three Philippines’ presidents: Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Benigno Aquino III, and Rodrigo Duterte. The findings show that although individual presidents have opportunities to promote their own preferences in dealing with China, they are not free from constraints. Despite showing great oscillations in rhetoric, the actual policies undertaken by each administration have never completely shifted to one or another extreme of the Sino-American spectrum: balancing against China using the alliance with the United States, or bandwagoning with China at the cost of losing the alliance with the United States.

Tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) is considered as an antitumor agent owing to its ability to induce apoptosis of cancer cells without imparting toxicity toward most normal cells. TRAIL is produced in poor yield because of its insoluble expression in the cytoplasm of E. coli. In this study, we achieved soluble expression of TRAIL by fusing maltose-binding protein (MBP), b’a’ domain of protein disulfide isomerase (PDIb’a’), or protein disulfide isomerase at the N-terminus of TRAIL. The TRAIL was purified using subsequent immobilized metal affinity chromatography and amylose-binding chromatography, with the tag removal using tobacco etch virus protease. Approximately 4.5 mg of pure TRAIL was produced from 125 ml flask culture with a purification yield of 71.6%. The endotoxin level of the final product was 0.4 EU/μg, as measured by the Limulus amebocyte lysate endotoxin assay. The purified TRAIL was validated and shown to cause apoptosis of HeLa cells with an EC50 and Hill coefficient of 0.6 ± 0.03 nM and 2.41 ± 0.15, respectively. The high level of apoptosis in HeLa cells following administration of purified TRAIL indicates the significance and novelty of this method for producing high-grade and high-yield TRAIL.

Bich Thuy Nguyen,원성식,박봉찬,조용진,안창원,김일원,김태훈 한국물리학회 2020 Current Applied Physics Vol.20 No.12
Lead-free (Bi0.5Na0.5)(Ti1-xMnx)O3 (BNTMn-x; x = 0, 0.0025, 0.0050, 0.0100) thin films were fabricated using a chemical solution deposition method on Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si substrate. The effect of Mn substitution on crystal structures, surface morphologies, and ferroelectric and transverse piezoelectric properties of BNTMn-x thin films was investigated. The 0.5 mol% Mn-doped (Bi0.5Na0.5)(Ti0.995Mn0.005)O3 thin film exhibited a well-saturated ferroelectric P-E hysteresis loop at room temperature. A remnant polarization (Pr) of 16 μC/cm2 was obtained for the BNTMn-0.0050 film at an applied electric field of 400 kV/cm. In addition, a 1.12-μm-thick BNTMn- 0.0050 film was applied as a cantilever. The Pt/BNTMn-0.0050/Pt/TiO2/SiO2/Si unimorph cantilever exhibited a high transverse piezoelectric coefficient (e*31) of 2.43 C/m2.
Serum Cadmium Level Is Positively Associated with Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysm Incidence
Bich Nae Ri Yoon,Jun Beom Lee,Ga Heon Jin,Won Yong Kim 대한가정의학회 2019 Korean Journal of Family Medicine Vol.40 No.4
Background: Cadmium is a toxic element in cigarette smoke associated with ischemic vascular disease. Its associa-tion with cerebral aneurysm is unknown. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the medical records of patients with headache who underwent imaging studies between March 2014 and August 2016. An unruptured intracranial aneurysm (UIA) was confirmed by brain magnetic resonance angiography or computed tomography angiography. A control group included age- and sex-matched patients without an UIA. Whole blood and random urine tests were used for detection of cadmium and arsenic levels, respectively. Student t-test was used to compare subject characteristics, mean cadmium and arsenic levels between groups, and differences between groups with small (<4-mm) and large (≥4-mm) UIAs. Multivariate regression analysis was used to identify risk factors for aneurysm incidence. Results: Of 238 patients, 25 had an UIA. Those with an UIA had more pack-years of smoking (19.5±3.8 vs. 12.5±6.8, P=0.044) and higher mean serum cadmium levels (1.77±0.19 vs. 0.87±0.21 µg/L, P=0.027). Arsenic levels showed no difference between groups. (67.4±23.5 vs. 62.2±18.3 µg/L, P=0.458). There were no significantly different demo-graphic, clinical, or laboratory characteristics between small and large aneurysm groups. According to multivariate analysis, smoking (odds ratio [OR], 1.48; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.06–2.33; P=0.047) and serum cadmium >2.0 mcg/L (OR, 1.39; 95% CI, 1.15–1.84; P=0.043) were associated with aneurysm incidence. Conclusion: UIA incidence was associated with pack-years of smoking and serum cadmium level, but aneurysm size was not associated with serum cadmium level.
Serum Amyloid A1: A Biomarker for Neutrophilic Airway Inflammation in Adult Asthmatic Patients
Bich Tra Cao Thi,Quoc Quang Luu,최영우,Yang Eun-Mi,Trinh Hoang Kim Tu,신유섭,박해심 대한천식알레르기학회 2022 Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Research Vol.14 No.1
Purpose: We evaluated the role of serum amyloid A1 (SAA1) in the pathogenesis of airway inflammation according to the phenotype of asthma. Methods: One hundred twenty-two asthmatic patients and 60 healthy control subjects (HCs) were enrolled to measure SAA1 levels. The production of SAA1 from airway epithelial cells (AECs) and its effects on macrophages and neutrophils were investigated in vitro and in vivo. Results: The SAA1 levels were significantly higher in sera of asthmatic patients than in those of HCs (P = 0.014); among asthmatics, patients with neutrophilic asthma (NA) showed significantly higher SAA1 levels than those with non-NA (P < 0.001). In vitro, polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid (Poly I-C) treatment markedly enhanced the production of SAA1 from AECs, which was further augmented by neutrophils; SAA1 could induce the production of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8, and S100 calcium-binding protein A9 from AECs. Additionally, SAA1 activated neutrophils and macrophages isolated from peripheral blood of asthmatics, releasing neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) and secreting proinflammatory cytokines presenting M1 phenotype, respectively. In ovalbumin-induced asthma mice, Poly I-C treatment significantly increased SAA1 levels as well as IL-17A/interferon-gamma/IL-33 levels in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), leading to airway hyperresponsiveness and inflammation. The highest levels of SAA1 and neutrophilia were noted in the BALF and sera of the NA mouse model, followed by the mixed granulocytic asthma (MA) model. Especially, SAA1 induced IL-17/retinoic acid receptor-related orphan receptor γt expression from activated CD4+ T lymphocytes in asthmatic mice. Conclusions: The results show that SAA1 could induce neutrophilic airway inflammation by activating neutrophils along with NET formation, M1 macrophages, and Th2/Th17 predominant cells, contributing to the phenotype of NA or MA.

2017 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.22 No.3
Interleukin-33 (IL-33) is one of the important alarmins of the immune system and possesses dual functions as an anti- or pro-inflammatory molecule. The production of this cytokine in E. coli is hampered by the insoluble expression in the cytoplasm, resulting in inclusion body formation. In this study, the expression of IL-33 was optimized by fusing the N-terminus of IL-33 with several solubilizing tags that act as chaperones for proper protein folding: maltose binding protein (MBP), b´a´ domain of protein disulfide isomerase (PDIb´a´) and glutathione Stransferase (GST). The expression of the fusion proteins was stimulated by 0.5 mM IPTG at different temperatures, 37, 30, 25, and 18oC. As a result, IL-33 was expressed highly and in soluble form in the cytoplasm of E. coli when fused with MBP or PDIb´a´ tags in the presence of 0.5 mM IPTG at 25 or 30oC. We describe a simple purification procedure of IL-33 from the PDIb´a´-IL-33 construct using immobilized metal affinity chromatography (IMACs) with supplementary of tobacco etch virus (TEV) protease for tag removal. The high bioactivity of purified IL-33 on the proliferation and activation of macrophages was confirmed by MTT and nitrite releasing assays using RAW 264.7 These data show an improved method for producing high grade and yield IL-33.
