        Multi‑tissue lipotoxicity caused by high‑fat diet feeding is attenuated by the supplementation of Korean red ginseng in mice

        Background Excessive intake of fat, one of the causes of obesity, is associated with low-grade infammation in various susceptible organs and eventually causes tissue toxicity. This study examines the multifaceted suppressive efects of Korean red ginseng extract (KRG) on high-fat diet (HFD)-induced lipotoxicity and infammatory responses in the aorta, liver, and brain. Methods Male C57BL/6 mice were fed HFD with or without KRG for 12 weeks. The improvement efect in KRG on lipotoxicity and infammatory potential was determined in the blood and the aorta, liver, and brain tissues. Results KRG signifcantly inhibited 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase activity by >20% in vitro. KRG supplementation suppressed HFD-associated body weight gain, lipid profle changes, and excessive fat deposition in the liver and increased leptin, insulin, and ALT levels in the blood. Infammatory markers in the aorta, liver, and brain were also signifcantly reduced by KRG treatment. In microvascular endothelial cells, the 15% cyclic stretch-mediated upregulation of ICAM-1 and vascular cell adhesion protein-1 (VCAM-1) expression was signifcantly attenuated in the presence of KRG. Conclusion KRG supplementation attenuates HFD-mediated body weight gain, lipid profle changes, and multi-tissue infammatory responses.

        Associations of serotonergic genes with poststroke emotional incontinence

        <P><B>Objectives</B></P><P>Poststroke emotional incontinence (PSEI) has been associated with serotonergic dysfunction. Polymorphisms of serotonin transporter (5‐HTT) and serotonin 2a receptor (5‐HTR2a) genes may regulate serotonergic signaling at brain synapses, and this study was to investigate associations with PSEI in an East Asian population.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>In 276 stroke cases, PSEI was diagnosed by Kim's criteria. Covariates included age, gender, education, history of depression or stroke, current depression, and stroke severity and location. Genotypes were ascertained for 5‐HTT gene‐linked promoter region (5‐HTTLPR), serotonin transporter intron 2 variable number tandem repeat, 5‐HTR2a 1438A/G, and 5‐HTR2a 102 T/C. Associations with PSEI were estimated by using logistic regression models, and gene–gene interactions were investigated by using the generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction method.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>PSEI was present in 37 (13.4%) patients. The 5‐HTT gene‐linked promoter region <I>s</I>/<I>s</I> genotype was independently associated with PSEI. No associations with STin2 VNTR and 5‐HTR2a genes were found, and no significant gene–gene interactions were identified.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Stroke patients with 5‐HTTLPR <I>s</I> allele had higher susceptibility to PSEI, which underlines the potential role of serotonergic pathways in its etiology.       • S-542 Indomethacin aggravates the renal injury by inhibition of adenosine-medited renal protection in AKI

        Background: Ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) is a leading cause of acute kidney injury with high morbidity and mortality due to limited therapy. AKI emerges in various clinical settings and is complex with outcome linking oxidative stress, inflammation, and cell death. Therefore protection of AKI is still an unsolved problem. Indomethacin is generally known that it inhibits the production of prostaglandins through the inhibition both cyclooxygenase (COX) 1 and 2. Prostaglandins have a wide variety of effect such as regulation of vasodilation, inflammation, regeneration, pain, fever. Therefore effect of indomethacin in AKI is different according to injury model. We investigated whether indomethacin which inhibits the production of prostaglandins aggravate the renal injury in AKI mouse model. Methods: Male C57/BL6 mice (8-10 weeks old, weight 20~25 g) were used. Acute kidney injury is induced by bilateral kidneys pedicle clamping which were subjected to 20 min or 30 min at both kidneys. Mice were treated with indomethacin at before and after injury. Blood and kidney samples were collected at 24 hr after IRI. The expression level of creatinine, N-gal & Kim-1 were detected in serum. And the expression level of PGE2, cAMP and adenosine were detected in kidney. Kidney Injury score were measured by HE staining and TUNEL. Results: In bilateral AKI model, Serum NGAL level and creatinine level were significantly highest in indomethacin treated group compared to non-treated group (NGAL, p<0.05; creatinine, p<0.01). Indomethacin treated group showed significantly more necrosis and apoptosis compared to non-treated group. Furthermore, Indomethacine inhibited the production of prostaglandins, cAMP and adenosine. Conclusions: Indomethacin inhibits adenosine-mediated renal protection by inhibition of prostaglandin production in AKI.       • 과학 포트폴리오 체제의 적용이 초등학생의 사회심리학적 교실 환경에 미치는 효과

        The purpose of the research is to investigate the effects of a portfolio system on students' socio-psychological classroom environments in elementary science class. Two schools were selected from a metropolitan area, a city, and one school from a rural area in central Korea. Two fifth-grade classes were sampled from each school selected, and one class is assigned to experimental group and the other to control group, respectively. The total number of participants of the study is 399. Portfolio system was administered to experimental group, and conventional teaching to control group for two and half month. WIHIC, an inventory to measure socio-psychological classroom environment, was administered as a pre-and post-test. Experimental group gained statistically higher scores on WIHIC after administering portfolio system. They showed more positive perceptions on sub-areas of WIHIC such as teacher support, task orientation, and equity. There is interaction between region and group: the effects of the portfolio system is highest in rural area, lowest in metropolitan area, and the city in between. Portfolio system have positive effects on students' socio-psychological classroom environments. Enhanced socio-psychological classroom environments is expected to contribute to positive self-concept, higher science achievements, and self-directed learning.

        The diagnostic requirements were suggested and explained regarding the systems of differentiation of symptoms and signs in the third year study of standardization and unification of the terms and conditions used for diagnosis in oriental medicine. The systems were as follows : - analyzing and differentiating of epidemic febrile disease - analyzing and differentiating in accordance with the Sasang constitution medicine based on four-type recognition - differentiation of disease according to pathological changes of Chong and Ren channels - standards for diagnosis of women's disease - standards for diagnosis of children's disease - standards for diagnosis of motor and sensor disturbance (-muscle. born, joint, etc.) - standards for diagnosis of neuropsychiatric disease - standards for diagnosis of five sense organ disease - standards for diagnosis of external disease The indivisual diagnosis pattern was arranged by the diagnostic requirements in the following order : another name, notion of diagnosis pattern, index of differentiation of symptoms and signs, the main point of diagnosis, analysis of diagnosis pattern, discrimination of diagnosis pattern, prognosis, a way of curing a disease, prescription, herbs in common use, disease appearing the diagnosis pattern, documents. The standards for diagnosis of each disease was arranged by the diagnostic requirements in the following order : another name, notion of disease, the main point of diagnosis, analyzing and differentiating of disease, analysis of disease, discrimination of disease, prognosis, a way of curing and prescription of disease, disease in western medicine appearing the disease in oriental medicine, documents.

        정상교하 아동의 두개안면부 성장에 관한 종적 연구

        혼합치열기 정상교합 아동 24명(남:14명 여:10명 초진 시 평균 나이 9±1.3세, 평균 관찰 기간: 13±1.3개월)에 대한 성장량을 측정하여 기능적 교정장치의 순수 치료효과를 평가하는데 도움이 되기 위해 3회(5~8개월 간격) 촬영한 측모 두부 방사선 규격 사진에 대한 분석 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 1. 남아는 상악골은 전하방, 하악골은 전방성장하였고, 여아는 상하악골이 전하방 성장하였다(p<0.05). 2. 상하악골의 남녀간 차이에서 수평적 성장상태는 여아가 컸고(A point 여아: 2.39mm, 남아: 1.26mm, p<0.05), 수직적 성장상태는 유의한 차이가 없었다. 3. 상악 전치의 치축은 두개저에 대해서 순측 경사하였고(p<0.01) 하악 전치의 치축은 큰 변화가 없었다. The purpose of this study was to provide the reference data evaluating the treatment effect of orthopedic appliances. The skeletal and dental growth increments were measured in 24 normal mixed dentition children(boys: 14, girls: 10) by three serial lateral cephalograms: initial mean age: 9±1.3 years, mean observation period: 13±1.3 months, Cephalometric changes were analysed. The results were as follows: 1. In boys, the maxilla showed forward and downward growth pattern and the mandible showed forward growth pattern(p<0.05). In girls, the maxilla and mandible showed forward and downward growth pattern(p<0.05). 2. Horizontal growth of both maxilla and mandible in girls was superior to those in boys(A point: girls: 2.39mm, boys: 1.26mm, with p<0.05), whereas vertical growth of both maxilla and mandible in boys was similar to those in girls. 3. The change in tooth axis showed labioversion of upper incisor(p<0.01) and comparatively stable lower incisor position.

      • Flangeless Esser PET Phantom 영상 자동 분석 프로그램의 유용성 평가

        Purpose: ACR (American College of Radiology) offers variable parameters to PET/CT quality control by using ACR Phantom. ACR Phantom was made to evaluate parameters which are uniformity, attenuation, scatter, contrast and resolution. Manual analysis method wasn't good for the use of QC because values of parameter were changed as it may user and it takes long time to analysis. Ki-Chun Lim, a nuclear scientist in AMC, developed program that automatically analysis values of parameter by using ACR Phantom to overcome above problems. In this study, we evaluated automatic analysis program's usability, through the comparing SUV of each method, reproducibility of SUV when repeated analysis and the time required. Materials and Methods: Using Flangeless Esser PET Phantom, the ideal ratio of 4 : 1 hot cylinder and BKG but it actually showed a ratio of 3.89 to 1 hot cylinder and BKG. SIEMENS Biograph True Point 40 was used in this study. We obtained images using ACR phantom at Fusion WB PET Scan condition (2 min/bed) and 120 kV, 100 mAs CT condition. Using True X method, 3 iterations, 14 subsets, Gaussian filter, FWHM 4 mm and Zoom Factor 1.0, $168{\times}168$ image size. We obtained Max. & Min. SUV and SUV Mean values at Cylinder (8, 12, 16, 25 mm, Air, Bone, Water, BKG) by automatic program and obtained SUV by manual method. After that, we compared manual and automatic method. we estimate the time required from opened the image data to final work sheet was completed. Results: Automatic program always showed same result and same the time required. At 8, 12, 16 and 25 m cylinder, manual method showed 6.69, 3.46, 2.59, 1.24 CV values. The larger cylinder size became, the smaller CV became. In manual method, bone, air, water's CV were over 9.9 except BKG (2.32). Obtained CV of Mean SUV showed BKG was low (0.85) and bone was high (7.52). The time required was 45 second, 882 second respectably. Conclusions: As a result of difference automatic method and manual method, automatic method showed always same result, manual method showed that the smaller hot cylinders became, the lager CV became. Hot cylinders mean region size, the smaller hot cylinder size becomes we had some trouble in doing ROI poison setting. And it means increase in variation of SUV. The Study showed the time required of automatic method was shorten then manual method.

      • 칼만증후군(Kallmann's Syndrome) 1례

        Kallmann's syndrome is the most common form of isolated gonadotropin deficiency, characterized by hypogonadotropic hypogonadism due to GnRH deficiency, delayed puberty and smelling difficulty. It occurs sporadic or familial pattern, and the mode of inheritence has not been fully documented. The defect in patient of Kallmann's syndrome occurs at suprapituitary level involving mechanism that regulate GnRH synthesis or release, so this syndrome classified as a secondary hypogonadotropic hypogonadism. The gonadotropin or pulsatile GnRH administration enable successful stimulation of spermatogenesis and fertility. We have experienced 1 patient with Kallmann's syndrome and presented with the review of the literature.

      • Procast를 이용한 AISI 316합금의 주조방안 연구

        In order to improve the casting process of a steel casting, the casting design method of AISI 316 alloy was investigated using a Procast. The design for a casting and a gate system were performed by solidworks. The analysis of solid fraction, solidification time, shrinkage and pore for AISI 316 models have been done with a Procast. As a result of solidification time, steep thermal gradient was observed where the thickness of casting change. The probability of macrocrack formation increased at casted area between large head feeders because of large cooling rate difference. Shrinkage was predicted around head feeders with medium thermal gradient. It were very important to increase the molten pressure and to maintain a gate with smooth curvature in order to get a good flow. The larger head feeder was, the less directional solidification was. Head feeder, especially it's volume and location, gave an strong influence on the casting defects.

        Metrical theory is mainly concerned with the study of stress and rhythm. The regular repetition of English stressed syllables should be simplified by a rhythm rule. This paper aims to systematize English phrase stress and rhythm through some generalized rules, comparing metrical theory with optimality theory. In this paper, three metrical theories will be introduced to explain why such rhythmic alternation occurs. Relating to this, the bracketed-grid theory proposed by Hayes (1995) gives us the most appropriate explanation with the faithfulness condition and the continuous column constraint which are based on the principle of head-modifier projection. And then we will examine the alternation of English phrase stress applying the movement of English phrase stress to optimality theory.
