Manuscripts dealing with the development and evaluation of performance of methods and instruments should discuss chemical sensitivity and specificity, detection limits, precision, accuracy, recovery, interference, comparison with other analytical methods ,and normal range, and when appropriate should include clinical data. Linear regression analysis is a commonly used technique in analyzing method comparison data. If a linear relationship between the test and reference moth can be defined, then the slope and intercept of this line can provide estimates of the proportional and constant error between the two methods. However if the basic assumptions underlying the least-squares model are not met, the estimated line may be incorrect. The Syncron CX5, a random access type analyser used for routine clinical chemistry determinations, was compared to the Gilford 2035. The analysis of data obtained by running serum samples in parallel on two instruments indicates that the Bookman CX5 correlates with the Gilford 203S although there were some bias.

A 4-year-old boy showed two episodes of encephalitis/encephalopathy involving disturbed consciousness, convulsion, and paresis associated with the elevated levels of protein and no pleocytosis of the cerebrospinal fluid. MRI studies of the brain revealed symmetrical lesions in the brain stem and thalamus at the first episode, and their sizes were regressed. The lesions were enlarged to the previous size in the second episode. These episodes were not followed by an elevation of the anti-viral antibody titer. In the second episode, intravenous methylprednisolone therapy and intravenous immunoglobulin therapy were introduced.
Thermoelectric Properties of Nanowires with a Graphitic Shell.

<P>A thermoelectric device that can generate electricity from waste heat can play an important role in a global energy solution. However, the strongly correlated thermoelectric properties have remained a major hurdle for the highly efficient conversion of thermoelectric energy. Herein, the electrical and thermal properties of Si and SiO2 nanowires with few-layer graphitic shells are demonstrated; these structures exhibit enhanced electrical properties but no increase in thermal conductivity. The main path of the phonons through the structures is the core nanowire, which has a large cross-sectional area relative to that of the graphitic shell layer. However, the electrical conductivities of the nanowires with shell structures are high because of the good electrical conductivity of the graphitic shell, despite its small cross-sectional area.</P>

<P>We demonstrate silicon germanium (SiGe) alloy nanowires (NWs) with Ge nanoparticles (GeNPs) embedded in a SiO2 shell as a material for decreasing thermal conductivity. During thermal oxidation of SiGe NWs to form SiGe–SiO2 core–shell structures, Ge atoms were diffused into the SiO2 shell to relax the strain in the SiGe core, and agglomerated as a few nanometer-sized particles. This structure leads to a large reduction in thermal conductivity due to the GeNP–phonon interaction, while electrical conductivity is sustained because the core of the SiGe alloy NW provides a current path for the charged carriers. The thermal conductivity of the SiGe alloy NWs wrapped with a GeNP-embedded SiO2 shell is 0.41 W m−1 K−1 at 300 K.</P>

Factors Associated With Subdural Hygroma Following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury
Sang-Geun Lee,Kum Whang,Sung Min Cho,Yeon Gyu Jang,Jong Yeon Kim,Jong Wook Choi 대한신경손상학회 2022 Korean Journal of Neurotrauma Vol.18 No.2
Objective: Subdural hygroma (SDG) is a complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI). In particular, the outcome and outpatient treatment period may vary depending on the occurrence of SDG. However, the pathogenesis of SDG has not been fully elucidated. Therefore, this study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with the occurrence of SDG after mild TBI. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 250 patients with mild TBI admitted to a single institution between January 2021 and December 2021. The SDG occurrence and control groups were analyzed according to the risk factors of SDG, such as age, history, initial computed tomography (CT) findings, and initial laboratory findings. Results: The overall occurrence rate of SDG was 31.6% (n=79). A statistically significant association was found between preoperative diagnoses and the occurrence of SDG, such as subarachnoid hemorrhage (odds ratio [OR], 2.36; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.26–4.39) and basal skull fracture (OR, 0.32; 95% CI, 0.12–0.83). Additionally, age ≥70 years (OR, 3.20; 95% CI, 1.74–5.87) and the use of tranexamic acid (OR, 2.12; 95% CI, 1.05–4.54) were statistically significant factors. The prognostic evaluation of patients using the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) did not show any statistical differences between patients with and without SDG. Conclusion: SDG was not associated with the prognosis of patients assessed using the GOS. However, depending on the occurrence of SDG, differences in patient symptoms may occur after mild TBI. Therefore, the early evaluation of patients with mild TBI and determination of the probability of developing SDG are important.

Background: Onychomycosis, especially toenail onychomycosis has become one of the common fungal infection and has historically been regarded as a cosmetic rather than medical problem by many patients, even by physicians. Recently, however, there are several reports that is a refractory disease which may cause a deleterious effect on patiets quality of life (QOL). Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of toenail onychomycosis on QOL in Korea and to assess the chandes of QOL after treatment. Methods: Total 1004 patients with toenail onychomycosis which was confirmed by clinical findings and KOH preparation were were enrolled at 47 dermatologic centers in Korea, and interviewed with standardized QOL questionnaire before and after sytemic antifungal treatment. Responses to the questionnaire were scored by 5-point scale (1∼4) and averaged, and were analyzed for 5 dimensions of emotional impact, social impact, symptorn and functional impact, patients views concerning treatment, and relationship with doctor. Results: 1. Before and after treatment, the most serious impact was emotional dimension showing 1.90 and 1.30 in average score (AS), and social (AS: 1.14 and 0.83) and symptom and functional impact (AS: 1.05 and 0.92) was also affected. 2. In female rather than male, statistically more significant impact on patients QOL was observed in all dimensions. 3. After treatment, 3 of 5 dimensions were improved significantly - emotional dimension (AS : from 1.90 to 1.30), social dimension (AS: from 1.14 to 0.83), patients view concerning treatment (AS: from 1.34 to 1.02). 4. The drgree of patients satisfaction at the therapeutic effect was very high- 62.4% (immediately after treatment) and 65.8% (9 months affer initiation of treatment) of patients answered excellent or good. Conclusion: This study confirms that toenail onychomycosis has significant impact on the overall QOL of patients. Also the effect of antifungal therapy on patients QOL were watisfactory. Therefore, both doctor and patient should pay more attention to the treatment of onychomycosis. [Kor J Med Mycol 3(1): 115∼124]
Factors associated with short-term outcomes of burr-hole craniostomy for chronic subdural hematoma
Gyubin Lee,Yeon gyu Jang,Kum Whang,Sung Min Cho,Jong Yeon Kim,Byeong Oh Kim,Jongwook Choi 대한신경손상학회 2023 Korean Journal of Neurotrauma Vol.19 No.3
Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a commonly encountered neurosurgical pathology that frequently requires surgical intervention. With an increasingly aging demographic, more older people and patients with comorbidities will present with symptomatic CSDH. This study evaluated clinical and laboratory factors affecting the short-term outcomes of CSDH after surgical intervention.
