In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of Penicillinase Producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae(PPNG), we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by menas of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. In 1998, 93 strians of N. genorrhoeae were isolated, among which 60(64.5%) were PPNG. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 64.5% in 1998.

In this paper, the new transverse flux machine type claw pole linear stepping motor(TFM_CPLSM) is proposed. And the magnetic equivalent circuit of TFM_ CPLSM is derived by the structure of the TFM_CPLSM. The design parameter, the magnetic flux density and the static thrust force of TFM_CPLSM are Performed with three-dimensional finite element method.
기능성 Catechol-O-Methyltransferase 유전자 다형성과 한국인 정신분열병의 관련성

연구목적 : Catechol-O-Methyltransferase(COMT)는 카테콜아민 신경전달물질의 불활성화를 담당하는 효소로서, 정신분열병과 관련된 후보 유전자로서 알려져 왔다. 최근, 기능성 COMT유전자 다형성과 정신분열병의 관련성이 제기되었는데, 한국인 정신분열병에서도 이러한 관련성이 있는지를 살피기 위해 본 연구를 시행하였다. 방 법 : 정신분열병으로 진단된 환자군 103명과 성별 및 연령별로 1:1 짝짓기 대조군 사이에 유전자형과 대립유전자의 분포를 비교하였다. 또한, 환자군은 공격적 행동, 가족력, 아동기 발병 여부에 따라 두 군으로 나누어 비교하였다. DNA의 다형성 부의를 중합효소연쇄반응에 의해 증폭한 후 ,NlaⅢ제한효소법과 전기영동을 실시하여 유전자형을 판별하였다. 결 과 : 환자군 전체와 대조군 사이에 유전자형과 대립유전자 빈도의 차이가 없었다. 가족력이 있는 환자군을 대조군과 비교하였을 때는, 대립유전자 L을 포함하는 유전자형과 그렇지 않은 유전자형의 분포에 있어 유의한 차이를 보였다(p=0.02, OR=3.9, 95% Cl=1.1∼14.3). 결 론 : 한국인 정신분열병과 기능성 COMT 유전자 다형성 사이에 유의한 관련성이 없었다. 따라서, 기능성 COMT 유전자 다형성이 한국인 정신분열병의 발병에 영향을 주지 못한다. 그러나, 정신분열병 가족력과 기능성 COMT유전자 다형성의 관련성이 시시돠어, 향후 본 연구에서 나타난 방법론적인 문제점을 보완하고 추가 대상자를 확보한 연구가 필요하다. Objectives : Catechol-O-methyltransferase(COMT) is involved in the degradation of catecholamine meurotransmitters and has been investigated as a candidate gene in schizophrenia. Recently, possible relationship between functional COMT gene polymorphism and schizophrenia has been suggested. To address the possible role of functional COMT gene polymorphism in the predisposition to schizophrenia, we carried out an association study in Korean schizophrenic patients and controls. Methods : One hundred and three Korean inpatients diagnosed as schizophrenia and 103 age and sex matched controls were selected as study subjects. Patients were subgrouped into two groups on the basis of history of aggressive behavior, family history of schizophrenia and related disorders, and age at onset. We determined COMT genotypes using PCR of the relevant region followed by digestion with NlaⅢ and electrophoresis. Results : No significant differences of allele and genotype frequencies were noted between patients and controls. However, when patients were categorized by the presence of family history of schizophrenia and related disorders, patients with family history showed almost 4 fold higher frequency of having COMT L allele containing genotype compared to controls(p=0.02, OR=3.9, 9.5% CI=1.10-14.33). Conclusion : Although our results do not support an association between functional polymorphism of COMT gene and schizophrenia overall, the findings suggest an association between functional COMT gene polymorphism and familial schizophrenia. Further studies with large samples are needed to confirm this association.
Environmental Factors Involved in Development of Skin Sooty

최근 국내에서 과피얼룩병이 발생하여 동양배의 상품성에 영향을 미치고 있지만, 이들에 대한 생태적 인 연구가 이루어져 있지 않은 실정이다. 이 병의 주 병원균인 Cladosporium sp. 균주들의 생육최적온도 는 20-25℃, 최저온도는 1℃였다. 과피얼룩병균의 주 병원균인 Cladosporium 균의 접종하였을 때 관계습 도가 높을 경우 발병율이 높았다. 이러한 결과들은 동양배 과피얼룩병의 발생은 동양배를 장기보관하는 조건인 고습도와 온도에서 발생하는 것을 의미한다. Skin sooty dapple disease, a fungal disease that negatively affects the quality of Asian pear fruit, has emerged recently in Korea, but has yet to be thoroughly characterized. In vitro evaluation of the environmental factors affecting the development of skin sooty dapple disease showed that Cladosporium sp. strains grew optimally at 20-25°C and grew least well at below 1°C. Inoculation with isolates of Cladosporium sp. showed the highest disease incidence under high relative humidity. These findings showed a correlation of the incidence of skin sooty dapple disease in Asian pears with high RH and temperature, conditions encountered inlongterm fruit storage.

<P>Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are difficult to degrade due to poor solubility, toxicity, and thermal stability. In the present study, the feasibility of PCB congener biodegradation by Ceriporia sp. ZLY-2010 was evaluated. The biodegradation rates of four PCB congeners, 4,4'-dichlorobiphenyl, 2,3',4',5-tetrachlorobiphenyl, 2,2',4,5,5'-pentachlorobiphenyl, and 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl were evaluated. The degradation rate of 4,4'-dichlorobiphenyl was 34.03% on incubation day 13, while that of 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl reached 40.05% on incubation day 17. Therefore, Ceriporia sp. ZLY-2010 was degrading the higher PCB congeners more efficiently. PCB congener degradation products were extracted using acetone and ethyl acetate. No 2,2',4,5,5'-pentachlorobiphenyl metabolites were detected in Ceriporia sp. ZLY-2010 culture, whereas 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl appeared to degrade to benzoic acid. However, intermediates of 2,2',4,4',5,5'-hexachlorobiphenyl were not detected during degradation. Therefore, additional studies should be performed to explore the mechanisms of PCB degradation. Our results indicate that Ceriporia sp. ZLY-2010 is able to degrade highly chlorinated biphenyls and has potential for use in PCB biodegradation and bioremediation.</P>

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EG) is a rare disease characterized by massive eosinophilic infiltration of gastrointestinal tissue, increased peripheral eosinophilia and nonspecific gastrointestinal symptoms. EG have no known causes for eosinophilia such as drug, parasite, or malignancy. About 50% of EG patients have allergic diseases suggesting EG may be associated with allergic status since some EG patients exhibit elevated serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels. We report a case of EG which led to severe malabsorption and iron deficiency anemia associated with multiple food allergies. A 28-yearold Caucasian male patient visited emergency room complaining general weakness and leg swelling for 2 months. He had allergic rhinitis and vomiting whenever eating eggs, steaks, and salmons. He looked chronically-ill and conjunctivae were pale. In laboratory findings, hemoglobin level and WBC count were 6.4g/dL and 7,400/uL with 24.4% of eosinophil fraction as well as serum total protein and albumin levels were 3.9g/dL and 2.8g/dL, respectively. Serum iron level (12μg/dL), total iron binding capacity (247μg/ dL), and ferritin level (2.2μg/L) were all decreased. Serum eosinophil cationic protein level was increased (30.0μg/L) whereas serum total IgE level was within normal reference value (77KU/L). Serologic tests for parasite were all negative. Endoscopic studies were performed to exclude gastrointestinal bleeding and multiple nodular lesions were seen on gastric antrum with increased eosinophil in. ltration in lamina propria. High serum specific IgE levels to offending foods (beef: 0.82kU/L, pork: 0.83kU/L, egg white: 0.40kU/L, egg yolk: 0.54kU/L, and milk: 0.81kU/L) were noted. He was recommended avoiding offending foods with oral prednisolone therapy. Six months after food restriction, eosinophil count was 400/uL and hemoglobin level was restored to 11.5g/dL with 4.1g/dL of serum albumin level. We report a rare case of eosinophilic gastroenteritis associated with multiple food allergies.
