The purpose of this study was to investigate the association among nutrient intakes and health-related lifestyles with cardiovascular disease risk assessed by blood lipid profile according to Apolipoprotein E genotypes. Middle-aged industrial male workers who had completed their annual medical examination were recruited and data of 675 subjects who finished the nutrient survey were used in the analysis. Anthropometric parameters, dietary assessment (FFQ), health-related lifestyles and blood profiles were used for statistical analyses. Apo E genotype groups were classified into the following three genotypes: Apo E2 group (including E2/E2, E2/E3, E2/E4), Apo E3 group (including E3/E3), Apo E4 group (including E3/E4, E4/E4). The frequency of Apo E2, E3, and E4 allele were 13.3%, 75.0% and 11.7% respectively. There were no significant differences in the anthropometric parameters depending on different Apo E genotypes. Also, no significant differences in the nutrient intakes were found according to the genotype groups. The nutrient intakes of all subjects were similar to or higher than the level of KDRIs (Dietary Reference Intakes For Koreans) except for intakes of calcium (67.44% of KDRIs), vitamin A (73.83% of KDRIs) and vitamin B2 (78.02% of KDRIs). Also, there were no significant differences of health-related lifestyles according to Apo E genotype groups. As for the lipid profiles, Apo E4 group had significantly higher total and LDL-cholesterol concentrations than the Apo E2 group (p < 0.05). We confirmed that plasma total and LDL-cholesterol concentrations were greatly influenced by Apo E genotypes. However, nutrient intakes and health-related lifestyles were not associated with Apo E genotypes.
절수에 의한 mongolian gerbil의 체중 변화에 관한 연구

Recently, the mongolian gerbils have been used in neurology and the study of water metabolism because of their easy onset of epileptic seizure and typical resistance to water deprivation. The sebaceous glands which are under the control of the gonadal hrmones are differently developed from the other laboratory animals. However the physiological data on the changes of body weight following water deprivation in mongolian gerbils is not available until now. In order to investigate the effect of the water deprivation on the body weight, the animals were deprived of water for 15 days. The body weights were measured daily by the torsion balance. The mean, the standard deviation, the standard error and the coefficient of variance of the body weights were calculated. The correlation was examined. The potential regression equation was y = 61.5458 - 2.0533 * x + 0.0487 * x^2. The regression coefficient was 0.993. The results obtained were as follows : 1. The body weights of the mongolian gerbils were continuously decrased from the 1st day to the 15th day after the water deprivation. 2. The mean body weight on the water deprivation was 63.0±7.00g and that at the 15th day was 41.4 ± 5.42g. 3. The coefficients of the variance showed the highest (13.09) at the 15th day and the lowest (10.10) at the 10th day. the coefficients of the variance kept decreasing until the 10th day and thereafter gradually increased until the 15th day. 4. The changing rate of the body weight kept continuously decreasing from the 1st day to the 15th day showing the daily loss of 1.0 - 3.3%. 5.The deviations (M - QBW) between the measured values (m) and the theorical values (QBW) using the regression equation showed the highest (1.494) at the 1st day and the lowest (0.053) at the 13th day. 6. The sum of the devitions was 0.179 and that of the deviation square was 1.15. The sum of the deviation rates between the mesaured body weights and the theorical ones was 0.484. 7. The daily body weight loss showed the highest at the 1st day by 2.053g and the lowest at the 15th day by 0.591g. 8. The specific body weight changing rates which were the rate of the body weight changing velocity to the changed body weight were decreased from 0.033% at the 1st day to 0.014% at the 15th day.

This study aims to review the problems and status of accident and construction projects also to find out the ways of preventing the works from accident. It can let them understand the reasons for the accidents and the way of promoting the awareness of safety. For the study the literature and previous studies are reviewed and then the field managers and safety management members were interviewed intent of status of field safety management and accidents data occurred at domestic construction fields.

This paper described a collaborative exercise intended to see what kinds of short tandem repeat (STR) loci are used in different DNA typing laboratories in Korea and to compare their results for the demonstration whether uniformity of DNA profiling results from different laboratory could be achieved in Korea Laboratories were asked to test five tissue DNAs using methods routinely used in each laboratory and to report the results to the coordinating laboratory. The exercise demonstrated that each laboratory was using different STR loci for the typing with different STR numbers,2 VNTRS,36 STRs and amelogenin in total, and the direct comparison of the results from all the laboratory for the 18 loci could not be done as only one laboratory submitted typing results. Among 21 loci for which several laboratories submitted typing results, results for 14 loci were the same and results for the other 7 loci were different depending on the participating laboratory. D1S80, F13A01, D16S539, D21S11, D18S51, D3S1744 were the loci with different typing results. Even in the cases where commercial kits were used, the results were not the same depending on the machines used, that is the capillary electrophoresis or the gel based electrophoresis. The reason for the different results, points about the standardization of the methods arid the profiling data were described.

Background: With reports on the relation between smoking and depression appearing since 1980, it has become clear that depression is one of the psychodynamics of smoking, though there has been little or no progress made in the study of whether or not there is indeed a relation between depression and nicotine dependence. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of depression on the amount and period of smoking and nicotine dependence among university man student smokers. Method: In periodical examination between 14 and 21, May, 2003, using 170 university male. The CES-D(Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression) Scale and the FTQ(Fagerstrom Tolerance Qustionnaire) were utilized to measure the level of depression and nicotine dependency. The amount of smoking was calculated based on the number of cigarette used. Result: Results indicated that depression had something to do with amount of smoking. Nicotine dependence also was related to depression but total value was relatively low. finally the period of smoking had nothing to do with depression. Conclusion: The results of this study revealed that the amount of smoking of university man student smokers was very high. Both the amount of smoking and nicotine dependence were affected by levels of depression. Accordingly psychiatric nursing access such as emotional support is needed to manage depression and decrease smoking.
Effects of β-Lapachone on Gastric Secretion

The effects of β-lapachone on gastric secretion were investigated. The pylorus of male Sprague-Dawley rats was ligated and intraduodenally injected with β-lapachone, and the volume, pH, free HCl, and total acidity of gastric fluid were measured 6 hours after the operation. Treatment with β-lapachone resulted in dose-dependent inhibition of gastric secretion Gastric fluid was reduced to 42.9% of control level by 100 mg/kg of β-lapachone, leading to an increase of pH to 6.70 from 1.85 in the control group. In parallel with the increase of pH, at this dosage, free HCl and total acidity decreased to 16.7% and 12.0%, respectively, of control levels. β-Lapachone exhibited ED50 values of 72, 46, and 47 mg/kg for inhibition of gastric volume, free HCl, and total acidity, respectively, implying a superior efficacy on gastric acid to volume. In comparison, pantoprazole (30 mg/kg) reduced the volume, free HCl and total acidity of gastric fluid to 53.0%, 26.0%, and 25.0%, respectively, of control levels, resulting in an increase in pH to 6.36. In the current study, it was confirmed that β-lapachone at an appropriate dose (100 mg/kg) exerted a higher inhibitory effect on gastric secretion than pantoprazole (30 mg/kg), a well-known proton-pump inhibitor. Therefore, it is suggested that β-lapachone could be a candidate compound for prevention or treatment of gastric ulcers induced by diverse psychological and physical stimuli.

<P>A Tn5 transposon mutant was isolated of the alkylphenol degrader Pseudomonas sp. KL28 that showed increased growth at higher levels of m-cresol on solid and in liquid cultures. The transposon was inserted at the 5'-terminus of rpoS, which encodes a stationary-phase sigma factor. When grown on agar plates, the rpoS mutant developed prominent wrinkles, especially at lower temperatures, and spread faster on soft agar. In addition, the rpoS mutant had enhanced biofilm-forming ability that was not due to self-produced diffusible signals.</P>
