2004 Yeungnam University Journal of Medicine Vol.21 No.2

Background: Spirituality has been an important part of Transpersonal Psychology and is believed to have a large effect on the mental health because it has been systematized. The aim of this study was to determine the level of spiritual disposition on human beings along with its effects on one's mental health. Materials and Methods: The study targeted 400 women residing in Youn-Gil city of JiLin Prov., which is a district of the Cho-Sun tribe in China. Their spiritual well-being was studied using the Spiritual Well-being Scale-Korean Version. The spiritual well-being scale consists of 2 sub-scales of religious well-being and existential well-being. The study was evaluated using a lie scale, psychotic trend, and a combined anxiety-depression scale. The results were considered to be factors of one's mental health. The correlation between the spiritual well-being and each tendency was analyzed by regression analysis. Results: The total score of the Cho-Sun tribal women according to the spiritual well-being scale was 68.29 which was much less than the 100.65 of Korean Christian women. There was no significant correlation between the spiritual well-being and the Lie trend. However, it was found that 86%(344) of Cho-Sun tribal women scored above 70 in the Lie trend with a mean score of 74.57 which is higher than normal populations. Regarding the correlation between the spiritual well-being and psychotic trend, the psychotic trend became significantly higher when the religious well-being was at a high level. On the other hand, the psychotic trend became significantly lower when the existential well-being was at a high level. Regarding the correlation between the spiritual well-being and anxiety, the anxiety was significantly higher when the religious well-being was at a high level. However, the anxiety level was significantly low when the existential well-being was at a high level. Regarding the correlation between the spiritual well-being and depression, the depression level was somewhat significantly high when the religious well-being was at a high level. However, the depression level was significantly low when the existential well-being was at a high level. Conclusion: This study evaluated the effects of spiritual well-being on a person's mental health among Cho-Sun tribal women in Youn-Gil city of JiLIn Prov., P.R. of China. The results found that the religious well-being, which is a sub-scale of spiritual well-being, had negative effects while the existential well-being had positive effects on the mental health. These results proved that a person's religious disposition had negative effects on their mental health in a communitarian society.

COVID-19 and Panax ginseng: Targeting platelet aggregation, thrombosis and the coagulation pathway

        Yuan Yee Lee,Yixian Quah,Jung-Hae Shin,Hyuk-Woo Kwon,Dong-Ha Lee,Jee Eun Han,Jin-Kyu Park,Sung Dae Kim,Dongmi Kwak,Seung-Chun Park,Man Hee Rhee 고려인삼학회 2022 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.46 No.2

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) not only targets the respiratory system but also triggers a cytokine storm and a series of complications, such as gastrointestinal problems, acute kidney injury, and myocardial ischemia. The use of natural products has been utilized to ease the symptoms of COVID-19, and in some cases, to strengthen the immune system against COVID-19. Natural products are readily available and have been regularly consumed for various health benefits. COVID-19 has been reported to be associated with the risk of thromboembolism and deep vein thrombosis. These thrombotic complications often affects mortality and morbidity. Panax ginseng, which has been widely consumed for its various health benefits has also been reported for its therapeutic effects against cardiovascular disease, thrombosis and platelet aggregation. In this review, we propose that P. ginseng can be consumed as a supplementation against the various associated complications of COVID-19, especially against thrombosis. We utilized the network pharmacology approach to validate the potential therapeutic properties of P. ginseng against COVID-19 mediated thrombosis, the coagulation pathway and platelet aggregation. Additionally, we aimed to investigate the roles of P. ginseng against COVID-19 with the involvement of platelet-leukocyte aggregates in relation to immunity-related responses in COVID-19.

The increasing hematopoietic effect of the combined treatment of Korean Red Ginseng and Colla corii asini on cyclophosphamide-induced immunosuppression in mice

        Yuan Yee Lee,Muhammad Irfan,Yixian Quah,Evelyn Saba,Sung-Dae Kim,Seung-Chun Park,Myung-Gyun Jeong,Yi-Seong Kwak,Man Hee Rhee 고려인삼학회 2021 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.45 No.5

Background: Hematopoiesis is the production of blood cells from hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) that reside in the bone marrow. Cyclophosphamide (CTX) is a chemotherapy drug that suppresses the immune system. Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) and Colla corii asini (CCA) have been traditionally used for boosting the immune system. Methods: HSCs in the bone marrow, and immune cell subtype in splenocytes, PBMCs, and thymocytes were investigated. Serum levels of hematopoietic-related markers were analyzed using ELISA. Protein expression in spleen tissue was analyzed using western blot analysis. Hematoxylin & eosin staining in the femurs of mice were also conducted. Results: The combination of KRG and CCA with a ratio of 3:2 increased HSCs, CD3 and CD8+ T cells in the circulation, and CD3 T cells in the spleen. A ratio of 2:3 (KRG:CCA) increased the thymic regulatory T cells and recovered the CD3 T cells in the spleen and circulation while recovering proteins in the JAK-STAT pathway in the spleen. Overall, blood cell population and differentiating factors vital for cell differentiation were also significantly recovered by all combinations especially in ratios of 3:2 and 2:3. Conclusion: A ratio of 3:2 (KRG:CCA) is the most ideal combination as it recovered the HSC population in the bone marrow of mice.

QTL Dissection of Agronomic and Domestication Traits Using Introgression Lines Carrying Wild Rice (Oryza rufipogon Griff.) Segments in Cultivated Rice (O. sativa L.) Background

        Yuan, Ping-Rong,Kim, Hyun-Jung,Chen, Qiong-Hua,Ju, Hong-Guang,Lee, Seung-Joon,Ji, Shi-Dong,Ahn, Sang-Nag 한국작물학회 2009 Journal of crop science and biotechnology Vol.12 No.4

The nearly isogenic nature of the introgression lines (ILs) provides a relative advantage over other segregating populations in the rapid implementation of pyramiding approach through crosses and marker analysis. A set of 126 ILs carrying various introgressed segments from a presumed wild progenitor, Oryza rufipogon Griff. Acc. W1944 in the background of an elite Korea japonica cultivar (O. sativa L.), Hwayeongbyeo, was constructed using the marker assisted selection (MAS) technique combined with repeated backcrosses. The 126 ILs have different W1944 segments on each chromosome, with 100% coverage of wild segments on chromosome 1, while for chromosome 10, the coverage was only 33.3%. The mean number of homozygous and heterozygous donor segments were 3 (ranging from 0 to 7) and 4.7 (ranging from 1 to 14.5), respectively, and 31.6% of introgressed segments had sizes of less than 10.5 cM. A total of 41 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and two loci associated with pericarp coloration were identified. The number of QTLs per trait ranged from 2 to 6. Phenotypic variance associated with each QTL varied from 9.1 to 52.2%, with an average of 17.1%. For 11 (26.8%) of the QTLs detected in this study, the O. rufipogon-derived alleles contributed the desired agronomic effect despite the overall inferior characteristics of the wild phenotype. Favorable alleles from the O. rufipogon accession were identified for panicle number, panicle length, days to heading, secondary branches, spikelets per panicle, and 1,000-grain weight.

Ginseng Extract Regulates the Alterations of Sleep Architecture and EEG Power Spectra in Restraint Stressed Rats

        Yuan MA,Jae Soon EUN,Shulong YANG,Kwang Seung LEE,Eun-Sil LEE,Chung-Soo Kim,Ki-Wan OH 고려인삼학회 2010 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.34 No.1

The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the regulation of sleep architecture by the red ginseng water extract (RGE) in acutely and chronically restraint stressed rats. Adult rats were fitted with sleep?wake recording electrodes. Following post-surgical recovery, rats were extensively habituated for freely moving polygraphic recording conditions. Polygraphic signs of sleep-wake activities were recorded for 24 h after RGE administration and induction of stress and were analyzed to understand the regulation of sleep architecture. Acute stress decreased wakefulness and increased total sleep, non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep, and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep in both the daytime and nighttime recording. RGE shortened the daytime NREM and REM sleep, without changing the wakefulness and total sleep. RGE increased nighttime wakefulness, and decreased total, NREM and REM sleep. Chronic stress increased wakefulness and decreased total sleep in the daytime recording, and increased REM and decreased NREM sleep in both the day and night time recording. RGE ameliorated chronic stress and induced alterations of REM and NREM sleep in the day and night time sleep architecture. Acute and chronic stress could also induce alternations in cortex electroencephalogram (EEG) recording during NREM, REM sleep and wakefulness. These findings suggest that RGE may modulate the sleep behavior in acutely and chronically stressed rats and the ameliorating effect of RGE on the sleep architecture may involve in modulation of α-, θ- and δ- wave activities of the cortical EEG.
