Background & Object : Dyspepsia for which no organic causes are disclosed is referred to as functional dyspepsia. Functional dyspepsia is here studied in connection with a biopsychosocial model. From the aspect of individual response to external environment, in connection with stress response, functional dyspepsia is studied by both the psychology department and the internal medicine departments. The disease is taken as approachable from the aspect of internal injury due to seven emotions and stress as differentiated by Oriental medicine. Materials and Methods : Targeted at 223 patients underwent medical checks and endoscopy at Kangnam Korean Hospital, Kyunghee University. They agreed to join this clinical experiment. Stress response inventory, GARS (global assessment of recent stress scale), GSRS (gastrointestinal symptom rating scale), diagnostic scores for Ki-depression, and Spleen Disease Differentiation of Syndromes were all measured and evaluated. The test group was comprised of functional dyspepsia patients. The control group was comprised of nonsymptomatic chronic gastritis patients who were found to suffer from chronical gastritis in endoscopy and thus could be diagnosed with functional dyspepsia if symptoms would arise, but did not complain of subjective symptoms. Results showed these corelations: Functional dyspepsia patients were found to have more serious Ki-depression compared to nonsymptomatic chronic gastritis patients. The more serious Ki-depression the more serious the dyspepsia symptoms. The higher the stress response inventory the more serious the dyspepsia. Deficiency of spleen Eum, and Deficiency and Sinking of spleen Gi were found to coincide with serious Ki-depression.

수족냉증(手足冷症) 환자(患者)에 대(對)한 컴퓨터 적외선(赤外線) 체열촬영(體熱撮影)의 의의(意義)

To make a objective diagnosis of the syndrome of cold-limbs, We investigated the 20 patients with cold limbs and GI trouble and 20 normal people as a control group. And we compared the thermal difference between Chon-jung(CV17) and Chung-wan(CV12 中脘), Chon-jung(CV17) and Ki-hae(氣海 CV6) and we compared the thermal differences of No-gung(PE8 勞宮) and Yong-chon(湧泉 KI1), too. The results were as follows. 1. All 20 patients had GI trouble and cold limbs. They had the symptom-Indigestion(16 cases-80%) with heart burn, tympanites, abdominal distention, hiccup, belching. Beside that symptom they also had constipation(6 cases-30%), diarrhea(3 cases-15%), headache & dizziness(6 cases-30%). And some had the menstrual syndrome, chronic fatigue, palpitation, insomnia, edema, arthralgia. 2. The thermal difference of the palms between the patients group and the control group were $25.70^{\circ}C,\;25.82^{\circ}C$, but they were not significant. 3. The thermal difference of the soles between the patients group and the control group were $23.58^{\circ}C,\;24.42^{\circ}C$ and the significancy was P=0.020 so it was significant(P<0.05). 4. The thermal difference of the palms and Chon-jung(CV17) between the patients group and the control group were $1.08^{\circ}C,\;0.76^{\circ}C$, but they were not significant. 5. The thermal difference of the sales and Chon-jung(CV17) between the patients group and the control group were $3.01^{\circ}C,\;1.90^{\circ}C$ and the significancy was P=0.003 so it was significant(P<0.05). 6. The thermal difference of Chon-jung(CV17) and Chung-wan(CV12 中脘) between the patients group and the control group was $0.30^{\circ}C,\;0.62^{\circ}C$ and the significancy was P=0.793 so it was significant(P<0.05). 7. The thermal difference of Chon-jung(CV17) and Ki-hae(CV6 氣海) between the patients group and the control group was $0.53^{\circ}C,\;0.68^{\circ}C$, but they were not significant. From the above, I could find the significance of D.I.T.I to diagnose the cold-feet not the cold-hands and the thermal difference between the trunk and limbs was more significant on cold-feet than on cold-hand, either.

Therapeutic Effects of Recombinant Human Epidermal Growth Factor (rhEGF) in a Murine Model of Concurrent Chemo- and Radiotherapy-Induced Oral Mucositis

<P>Concurrent chemotherapy with radiotherapy (CCRT) has been applied for the treatment of advanced stage of head and neck cancer patients. However CCRT is associated with several complications including mucositis, dermatitis, stomatitis, etc. This study was conducted to evaluate the therapeutic effect of systemically administrated recombinant human epidermal growth factor (rhEGF) in CCRT-induced oral mucositis in a mouse model. Oral mucositis was induced in male BALB/c mice through combination treatment with cisplatin (11 mg/kg, i.p.) and irradiation (17 Gy) of the head and neck area. rhEGF (1.0 mg/kg/day for consecutive 3 days) was administered systemically, and the therapeutic effect was determined by histological evaluation of the oral mucosa. To elucidate optimal dose of rhEGF on CCRT-induced mucositis, various concentrations (0.04–3 mg/kg) of rhEGF were injected for 3 days. Systemic rhEGF administration accelerated the recovery of body weight. Histologically, rhEGF-treated mice showed significantly increased epithelial cell layer thickness, basal cell number, and expression of Ki-67 compared to control mice. Most effective dose was 1 mg/kg among other doses tested. Systemic administration of 1 mg/kg of rhEGF reduces the severity of oral mucositis induced by CCRT in a mouse model, suggesting that rhEGF can be used for treating CCRT-induced mucositis during the cancer treatment.</P>

Effect of Growth Rate on the Production of L-Proline in the Fed-batch Culture of Corynebacterium acetoacidophilum

Corynebacterium acetoacidophilum RYU3161 was cultivated in a L-histidine-limited fed-batch culture. To investigate the effect of cell growth on the L-proline production, 5 L fed-batch culture was performed using an exponential feeding rate to obtain the specific growth rates $(\mu)$ of 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, and 0.1 $h_1$. The results show that the highest production of L-proline was obtained at $\mu$ = 0.04 $h_1$. The specific L-proline production rate $(Q_p)$ increased pro-portionally as a function of the specific growth rate, but decreased after it revealed the maxi-mum value at $\mu$ = 0.08 $h_1$. Thus, the highest productivity of L-proline was 1.66 g $L^-^1 h^-^1$ at $\mu$ = 0.08 $h_1$. The results show that the production of L-proline in C. acetoacidophilum RYU3161 has mixed growth-associated characteristics.

六味地黃湯이 生理活性指標와 淋巴球細胞數에 미치는 影響

Yookmijihwangtang has been widely used oriental herb prescriptions, which is healing some discuss that come from insufficiency of innate essence and deficiency of kidey Ki. the meaning of healing discusses tonification of insufficient innate essence and insufficient kidney Ki can be regarded as reinforcement of wholely power of keeping homeostasis, that is correlated with immuno-responsibility which protects subject from outer antigen to keep normal vital condition. This study was aimed to investigate correlative effects of Yookmijihw angtang water abstract on the RBC, WBC, blood CD4+ Theler cell count, blood testosterone, blood cAMP and blood cortisol. 40 Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into 5 groups(Normal, Control, SampleⅠ, SampleⅡ, SampleⅢ), 6 animals in every group. Normal group was not treated anything, control group was administrated normal saline in the same desage of sample Ⅰ. 3 Sample groups were received some of Yookmijihwangrang water abstract at one time per 24 hours during 5 days in different dosage. Sample Ⅰ (1/3 10pack/ml), SampleⅡ (1/62pack/ml), SampleⅢ(1/2.4pack/ml). After finishing treatment, all experimental svbjects were killed for blood sample on RBC, WBC, blood CD4+ T helper cell count, spleen CD4+ T helper cell count, axillary lymph node CD4+ T helper cell count. .blood cAMP, blood testosterone and blood cortisol. The results were as follows: RBC and WBC were incrased in all sample groups. Blood CD4+ Thelper cell count(CD4+ T cell count in the blood/whole lymphocyte count in the blood ×100%) was Mormal 46.17±5.88. Control 44.50±4.37, Sample Ⅰ 53.00±2.28. Sample Ⅱ 53.83±3.87, SampleⅢ 52.17±2.93. By the 95% Duncan ANOVA all experimental groups(sampleⅠ, sampleⅡ, sampleⅢ) showed slight significant difference from Nornal and Control. Blood cAMP(nmd/l) were Normal 1.12±0.17, Control 1.16±0.32, SampleⅠ 0.46±0.07, SampleⅡ 0.44±0.04, SampleⅢ 0.54±0.04 All cxperimental groups were signigicantly different from both Normal and Control groups(p<0.05). Blood cortisol(m l/ml) were Normal 100.00±2.00, Control 90.00±4.00, Samplc Ⅰ 440.00±5.00, SampleⅡ 520.00±40.00, SampleⅢ 470 00±7.00, Blood cortisol of all experimental groups were signifieantly increased(p<0.05). The results suggest that Yookmijihwangiang water abstract could be administrated to patienrts who have some diseases insufficient essence.

Blood CD4+ T helper cell count(CD4+ T cell count in the blood/whole lymphocyte count in the blood ${\times}100%$) was Normal $46.17{\pm}5.88$, Control $44.50{\pm}4.37$, Sample I $53.00{\pm}2.28$, Sample II $53.83{\pm}3.87$, Sample III $52.17{\pm}2.93$. By the 95% Duncan ANOVA all experimental groups(sample I, Sample II, Sample III) showed slight significant difference from Normal and Control. Blood cAMP(nmol/l) were Normal $1.12{\pm}0.17$, Control $1.16{\pm}0.32$, Sample I $0.46{\pm}0.07$, Sample II $0.44{\pm}0.04$, Sample III $0.54{\pm}0.04$. All experimental groups were singificantly different from both Normal and Control groups(p<0.05). Blood cortisol(nl/ml) were Normal $100.00{\pm}2.00$ Control $90.00{\pm}4.00$, Sample I $440.00{\pm}5.00$, Sample II $520.00{\pm}40.00$, Sample III $470.00{\pm}7.00$. Blood cortisol of all experimental groups were significantly increased(p<0.05). The results suggest that Yookmijihwangtang water abstract could be administrated to patients who have some diseases insufficient essence.

Interrelation of Cyclin D1, Cyclin E, and p27Kip1 Expression on Tissue Arrays of Breast Cancer

Purpose: To evaluate the clinical impact of the alteredexpression of cell cycle regulators in stage I and II breastcancers.Materials and Methods: The interaction between cyclinD1/E and p27Kip1 expressions were analyzed usingtissue microarray (TMA) technology in 133 breast cancers.Data from the immunohistochemical assays of 3molecules were merged, and analyzed, with a Ki67labeling index of the same tumors.Results: Cyclin D1 was expressed in 72 breast carcinomas(54.1%) and cyclin E in 60 (45.1%) out of the 133breast carcinomas. Expressions of cyclin D1 and cyclinE were inversely related to each other, and significantlyassociated with the estrogen receptor (ER) expressionand differentiation of the breast carcinoma. The expressionof cyclin E was significantly decreased in tumorsexpressing cyclin D1 (p=0.022). There was a trend forcyclin D1 expression to increase in tumors expressingp27Kip1 (p=0.053), but the expression of cyclin E didnot correlate with p27Kip1 expression. The Ki67 labelingindex was markedly increased in tumors expressing cyclinE, whereas it was significantly decreased in the cyclin D1or p27Kip1 expressing-tumors. From survival analysis,cyclin E expression was the only significant variable forthe prediction of poor survival.Conclusion: The abnormal expressions of cell cycleregulatory molecules are prevalent, and interrelated witheach other in breast cancer. Integration of TMA technologyallowed a high-throughput analysis for correlating molecularthe in situ findings, with the clinico-pathologicinformation. Hiccups, also known as singultus, are spasmodic involuntary contractions of respiratory muscles that shorten respiration. The characteristic sound is caused by rapid closure of the glottis. In oriental medicine, the mechanism of hiccups is "reversed flow of Ki". Hiccups have been associated with neoplasm, infections, seizures, diabetes. renal failure, alcohol ingestion, various drugs, and ischemic events of the myocardium or central nervous system. We present a case of chronic hiccups after cerebral infarction that was successfully treated using moxibustion therapy.

상아질접착제에 대한 광조사가 접착에 미치는 영향

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of light irradiation over self-priming adhesive on dentin bonding. After acid etching the exposed dentin, a self-priming adhesive (Prime&Bond□NT dental adhesive system, Dentsply DeTrey, GmbH, Konstanz, Germany) was applied and light irradiation was done for 20 sec with regular intensity (600 mW/㎠) in group I and for 3 sec with ultra-high intensity (1930 mW/㎠) in group III. No light irradiation was done over self-priming adhesive in groups II and IV. Composite resin was added on the self-priming adhesive and irradiated for 40 sec with regular intensity (600 mW/㎠) in groups I and II and for 3 sec with ultra-high intensity (1930 mW/㎠) in groups III and IV. To see the effect of light curing time on dentin bonding, another 3 group specimens were prepared. Without light-irradiation over self-priming adhesive, added composite resin was irradiated for 3, 6, or 12 sec with ultra-high intensity light. After bonded specimens were stored in 37℃ distilled water for 24 hours, shear bond strength were measured using a universal testing machine (4202, Instron, Instron Co., U.S.A.) and fractured surfaces were examined under a stereomicroscope (SZ-PT Olympus, Japan) . Statistical analysis were done with one-way, two-way ANOVA and chi-square test. The results were as follows: 1.The shear bond strengths from the groups irradiated over self-priming adhesive were significantly higher than those from the groups without irradiation (p<0.05). 2.There was no significant shear bond strength difference between regular intensity light irradiation groups and ultra-high intensity ones (p>0.05). 3. There was no significant shear bond strength difference among various irradiation time groups with ultra-high intensity ones (p>0.05). 4.In stereomicroscopic examination of fractured surfaces, adhesive-cohesive mixed failure mode was mostly seen in all groups, and there was no significant difference in failure mode among groups (p>0.05) .
