© 2010 John Wiley & Sons A/S.</P><P><B>Background – </B> It has not been clarified whether the disparity in ischemic stroke outcome between populations is caused by ethnic and geographic differences or by variations in case mix. Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis can overcome some analytical problems but is rarely used in stroke outcome research. This study was to compare the ischemic stroke case‐fatality between two PSM cohorts of Sweden and Korea.</P><P><B>Methods – </B> Prognostic variables related to baseline characteristics and stroke care were included in our PSM model. Then, we selected 7675 Swedish and 1220 Korean patients with ischemic stroke from each stroke registers and performed one‐to‐one matching based on propensity scores of each patient.</P><P><B>Results – </B> After PSM, all measured variables were well balanced in 1163 matched subjects, and the 90‐day case‐fatality was identical 6.2% (HR 0.997, 95%CI 0.905–1.099) in Sweden and Korea.</P><P><B>Conclusions – </B> No difference is found in the 90‐day case‐fatality in propensity score‐matched Swedish and Korean patients with ischemic stroke.</P>

        Local Structural Changes Caused in Ni-Mn-Ga Alloy Films by Thermal Effects

        The local structural changes of Ni-Mn-Ga alloy films were investigated, according to the deposition temperature, by using the Ni, the Mn, and the Ga K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and glancing-angle X-ray diraction. The structural characters of the film deposited at 720 K are similar to those of bulk Ni2MnGa with a cubic L21 phase, and the film deposited onto a cooled substrate (s150 K) is in a disordered structure. After annealing, the structural changes in the films deposited at 150 K are as follows: the films annealed at temperatures below 440 K are in a disordered phase, the structural ordering starts in the films annealed at 520 K, at 600 K, the films become ordered, and at 680 K, the cubic L21 and the tetragonal phases coexist. By XAFS, the Ni, the Mn and the Ga atoms are found to be arranged as an ordered cubic L21 phase in the ordered film and as Ni-Mn-Ga alloy clusters in the disordered film.

      • 광전도체의 CdS 단결정 성장과 물리적 특성

        승화방법으로 광전도체의 CdS 단결정을 성장하였고 외삽법으로 구한 a_o와 c_o 의 격자상수 값은 각각 4.1318Å과 6.7122Å임을 알았다. Hall 측정값으로 부터 상온에서의 CdS 단결정의 운반자 농도와 이동도는 각각∼10^23m^-3과 2.93×10 exp (-2)㎡/V sec 이였으며 온도에 따른 이동도 변화는 33 K에서 150 K까지는 T^1/2 에 따라 증가하는 경향이 있고 180 K 에서 상온까지는 T^-2에 따라 감소한 경향이 나타났다. 광전류 측정으로 부터 나타난 단파장대의 봉우리는 진성전이에 기인하는 봉우리였으며 이 봉우리의 에너지값은 CdS 광전도체에 에너지 밴드 갭과 동일한 값을 나타냄을 알았다. A CdS single crystal was grown by using sublimation method. Lattice constants, a_o and c_o , obtained by using extrapolation were 4.1318 Å and 6.7122 Å, respectively. The carrier density was∼10^23m^-3 and the mobility was 2.93×10 exp (-2)㎡/V-sec from measured Hall data at room temperature. The mobility has a increasing tendency in proportion to T^1/2 from 33 K to 150 K and a decreasing tendency in proportion to T^-2 from 180 K to room temperature. The short wavelength band peak measured from photocurrent was due to intrinsic transition, and the energy value of this peak was equal to the energy band gap of CdS photoconductor.

        Structural Dependence of the Physical Properties for Co2MnGa Heusler Alloy Films

        In this study, Co2MnGa Heusler alloy (HA) ¯lms with signi¯cantly dierent structural orders were fabricated, and the in°uence of structural ordering on various physical properties was investigated. Co2MnGa ¯lms were deposited by °ash evaporation onto glass substrates at various substrate temperatures from 150 to 753 K. A disordered state of the ¯lms was achieved by using a vapor-quenching deposition at 150 K. Deposition at 623 K or post annealing of the disordered ¯lm at 728 K resulted in the formation of an intermediate structural order. As the substrate or the post-annealing temperature was decreased, a slight increase in the lattice constants was observed. We also found that the grain size increased in the ¯lms deposited at higher substrate temperatures. The ordered and intermediately ordered ¯lms exhibit ferromagnetic behavior and similar equatorial Kerr eect (EKE) spectra. Similar to the previously studied Ni-based HA ¯lms, the disordered ¯lm is nonmagnetic and has little EKE response. An annealing of the disordered ¯lm restores its crystalline structure and recovers the ferromagnetic order.

        A study on the high temperature-dependence of the electrical properties in a solution-deposited zinc-tin-oxide thin-film transistor operated in the saturation region

        <P>We investigate the effects of high temperatures in the range of 292 - 393 K on the electrical properties of solution-processed amorphous zinc-tin-oxide (a-ZTO) thin-film transistors (TFTs) operated in the saturation region. The fabricated a-ZTO TFTs have a non-patterned bottom gate and top contact structure, and they use a heavily-doped Si wafer and SiO2 as a gate electrode and a gate insulator layer, respectively. In a-ZTO TFTs, the trap release energy (E (TR) ) was deduced by using Maxwell-Boltzmann statistics. The decreasing E (TR) toward zero with increasing gate voltage (the density of trap states (n (s) )) in the a-ZTO active layer can be attributed to a shift of the Fermi level toward the mobility edge with increasing gate voltage. The TFTs with low gate voltage (low n (s) ) exhibit multiple trap and release characteristics and show thermally-activated behavior. In TFTs with a high gate voltage (high n (s) ), however, we observe decreasing mobility and conductivity with increasing temperature at temperatures ranging from 303 to 363 K. This confirms that the E (TR) can drop to zero, indicating a shift of the Fermi level beyond the mobility edge. Hence, the mobility edge is detected at the cusp between thermally-activated transport and band transport.</P>

        한우 c-fos 유전자의 염기서열 및 발현분석

        Cellular FOS(c-fos) protein is a transcription factor that forms heterodimers mostly with c-jun family and stimulates the transcription of genes containing AP-1 regulatory elements. This c-fos expression can control growth and differentiation of various precursor cells including myoblasts. The controls by c-fos gene have been identified for affecting skeletal muscle fiber traits which are the key determinants of meat quality in pigs. As a first step for identifying the relationship between c-fos gene and meat quality traits in cattle, we fully sequenced 1,443 bp of Hanwoo c-fos mRNA and analyzed expression patterns from various organs and muscle tissues. The sequence identities of Hanwoo c-fos with that of human, pig and mouse showed 89.8%, 93.3% and rib muscle from 7 organs and 9 different parts of muscles investigated. These results presented here can be used as a valuable marker for meat quality related traits in cattle with further verification.

        Physiochemical Characteristics of Lactobacillus acidophilus KH-l Isolated from the Feces of a Breast-Fed Infant

        Three lactobacillus strains, two from infant feces, and one from cow's milk, were selected among 172 isolates, from multiple sources, for further study based on the antimicrobial activities against six strains of pathogenic bacteria and identified as Lactobacillus acidophilus. The strains revealed a wide scope of spectrum against pathogenic bacteria. Viable Lactobacillus acidophilus KH-l cell counts at pH 2.0 were slightly decreased to $1.42\times10^7$ CFU/mL from $4.18\times10^7$ CFU/mL, while remaining at $3.42\times10^7$ CFU/mL at pH 4.0 with the survival rate of $33.97\%\;and\;81.82\%$, respectively. At the concentration of $0.1\%$ oxgall, L acidophilus KH-l kept growing up to $3.12\times10^7$ CFU/mL with a mean growth rate constant (k) of 0.25, and cell number was slightly decreased to $1.21\times10^7$ CFU/mL (k=0.19) with $0.3\%$ oxgall, but remained at $7.6\times10^6$ CFU/mL (k=0.17) with $0.5\%$ oxgall. L. acidophilus KH-l had a $D_{60}$ value of 7.14, with viable cell numbers $1.4\times10^5$ CFU/mL after heat treatment at $60^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. Stability of L acidophilus KH-l at $-20^{\circ}C$ was significantly higher, when the strain was cultivated under the optimum growth temperature $(54.41\%\;and\;54.35\%)$ than at the temperature $(13.53\%)$.
