        Structural and temperature dependence of physical properties of Ni2MnM (M=Al, Ga and In) Heusler alloys

        Some physical properties of bulk Heusler alloys, Ni2MnM (M = Al, Ga and In), and their thin lms were studied. Structural characterization was performed by using X-ray diraction. The optical conductivity spectra of the bulk samples exhibit a two-peak structure in the 0.5 - 4.5 eV energy range. The evolution of the high-energy peak can be explained by the variation of the lattice constant. A SQUID magnetometer was employed to measure the temperature dependence of the magnetic properties in the 5 - 395 K temperature range. The disordered phase of the Ni2MnGa and Ni2MnIn alloy lms behaves like Pauli paramagnets. Annealing of the disordered lms restores the ordered structure, with almost full recovery of the magnetic and transport properties of the ordered lms.

        PLAG alleviates chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia via promotion of megakaryocyte/erythrocyte progenitor differentiation in mice

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Previously, PLAG (1-palmitoyl-2-linoleoyl-3-acetyl-rac-glycerol, acetylated diglyceride) was reported to have an effect on the proliferation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) or to contribute to the prevention of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. In this study, we examined the role of PLAG in the differentiation of bone marrow cells from HSCs into progenitor cells in mice. After 15days, the lineage-negative cells, especially megakaryocyte/erythrocyte progenitors (MEP), were significantly increased in mice that received daily PLAG administration compared to those in the untreated mice. Furthermore, we explored the possibility that the PLAG-induced increase in MEP will contribute to reduction of chemotherapy-induced thrombocytopenia (CIT) in a thrombocytopenia mouse model. Mice were administrated 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and PLAG. After 7days, bone marrow cells were analyzed. Treatment with 5-FU powerfully decreased myeloid precursor populations and treatment with 5-FU/PLAG resulted in reduction of decreased myeloid progenitor cell numbers. In addition, numbers of circulating platelets were also increased by PLAG treatment. Taken together, PLAG plays a role in differentiating HSCs toward MEP and alleviating chemotherapy-induced bone marrow cell reduction. Thus PLAG shows its potential to augment the therapeutic effect of anti-cancer drugs-induced thrombocytopenia.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> PLAG administration increases the circulating platelet through stimulating differentiation of HSCs toward MEP. </LI> <LI> 5-FU-induced MEP decrease was significantly alleviated following PLAG administration. </LI> <LI> PLAG decreased chemotherapy-induced bone marrow damage and elevated circulating platelet. </LI> </UL> </P>

      • Neuroprotective Effect of <i>Buddleja officinalis</i> Extract on Transient Middle Cerebral Artery Occlusion in Rats

        <P>The flower buds of <I>Buddleja officinalis</I> M<SMALL>AXIM</SMALL> (Loganiaceae) are used to treat headache and inflammatory diseases in traditional Korean medicine. In the present study, the neuroprotective effects of the methanolic extract of <I>B. officinalis</I> (BOME) and of its hexane fraction (BOHF) were investigated in a middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAo, 120 min occlusion, 24 h reperfusion) Sprague–Dawley rat model. BOME or BOHF (100 mg/kg, <I>p.o.</I>) was twice administered 30 min before the onset of MCAo and 2 h after reperfusion. BOME and BOHF treated groups showed infarct volumes reduced by 33.9% and 68.2%, respectively, at 2 h occlusion. In BOHF treated animals, cyclooxygenase-2 and iNOS inductions were inhibited in ischemic hemispheres at both the mRNA and protein levels. Furthermore, <I>in vitro</I> studies showed that BOME and BOHF both inhibited LPS-induced nitric oxide production in BV-2 mouse microglial cells. These results suggest that the anti-inflammatory and the microglial activation inhibitory effects of <I>B. officinalis</I> extract may contribute to its neuroprotective effects in brain ischemia.</P>

        조직의 예술적 개입에 대한 단계별 분석 연구: 예술인 파견지원 사업을 중심으로

        본 연구는 국내 예술적 개입의 대표 사례인 한국예술인복지재단의 ‘예술인 파견지원 사업-예술路(로)’를 바탕으로, 예술적 개입 과정에서 나타날 수 있는 문제 사례를 사업 단계별로 도출하여 유형화하였다. 또한 사업 단계별로 나타난 이슈들을 분석하여 해결책과 향후 사업의 리스크 관리를 위한 구체적인 전략을 제시하였다. 우선, 최근 3년간 이루어졌던 예술인 파견지원 사업 사례들을 바탕으로 문헌연구를 하였으며, 4차례의 전문가 대상 FGI를 수행하여 사업 초반, 중반, 후반으로 이슈를 나누어 해결책을 제시하였다. 연구결과, 사업 초반 이슈는 ‘협업주제 및 프로젝트 선정’이며 이와 관련한 3가지 사례(참여 기업 기관의 사업에 대한 낮은 이해도, 참여 기업 기관의 일방적인 요구 및 강압적인 태도, 참여 기업 기관의 담당자 교체)를 선별하였으며, 사업 중반 이슈는 ‘리더예술인-참여예술인의 소통’과 ‘특정 예술인의 문제’로 이와 관련하여 각각 2가지 사례(리더예술인의 행동/태도, 리더예술인의 미숙함 )와 3가지 사례(특정 예술인의 부도덕, 특정 예술인의 불성실, 특정 예술인의 폭언)를 도출하였다. 사업 후반 이슈는 ‘협업 결과물 도출’이며 이와 관련한 3가지 사례(일의 편중, 기업 사정에 의한 변경 ,결과물 저작권에 대한 이슈)를 제시하였다. 사업단계별로 도출된 이슈에 대해 심층적으로 분석 후 문제 해결을 위한 실질적인 해결책을 제시하였다. 본 연구에서 제안된 해결책은 예술인 파견지원 사업의 문제 진단 및 개선안으로뿐만 아니라 예술적 개입 사례 사업들을 위한 가이드라인으로 활용될 수 있다. Subject study has listed and categorized potential obstacles from each steps of ‘The Artists Dispatch Supportive Business - Yesul-Ro’ performed by the Korean Artists Welfare Foundation, which is the most precedent case of artistic intervention process, and analyzed not only the issues per each steps of the business, but also solutions and detailed risk management plans accordingly. We first analyzed records and cases of The Artists Dispatch Supportive Businesses in last 3 years, and provided solutions through the whole phases of business by four FGIs with business experts. Our analysis concluded that the main issue in the early phase was ‘selection of subject on cooperation and project’ and related 3 cases to be lack of understanding, lack of cooperation and changes of people in charge of participating corporations. The middle phase issues we concluded were ‘communication between leading artists & participating artists’ with 2 cases of leading artists’ attitude and skill, and ‘Problems of specific artists’ with 3 cases to be specific artists’ moral hazard, untrustworthiness and abusing. Finally, issues in the ending phase of business was ‘cooperation output’ and 3 according cases as undistributed work of balance, change of plan due to corporation issue, and the copyright matter. We suggest advanced solution outputs for each problems from the above issues of business for it can be applied not only as diagnoses and solution to problems of The Artists Dispatch Supportive Business, but also as guidelines for future projects of artistic intervention.

      • Application of Korean Standard Quality Excellence Index for Strategic Quality Improvement Planning in Korea

        Purpose: As an ongoing pursuit of quality excellence, Korea continues to perform annual product quality evaluation based on Korean Standard Quality Excellence Index (KSQEI) across multiple industries by representative customers and experts in each industry. As a result, KSQEI has been providing a reliable quality measurement to the customers while providing a guideline for quality improvement planning to the firms. This study analyzes the current level of product quality in Korea and investigates the impact of quality elements on consumer``s satisfaction. Methodology/Approach: The most recent KSQEI measurements are analyzed in order to assess the current level of product quality in Korea. Comparisons of weighting methodologies are performed based on AHP, entropy, and a compromised weighting approach. Multiple linear regression analyses are also conducted to identify the effectiveness of product and hedonic quality elements on consumer``s satisfaction. Findings: The quality improvement priority orders vary depending on the chosen perspective of objective or subjective methodological tool Additionally, the implicit inferences indicate that firms need to set up improvement strategies by considering consumer``s satisfactory group as well as firm``s unique differences. Research Limitation/implication: This study has been performed based on the scope of Korean quality index measurement, KSQEI, which is a representative national quality evaluation system. The index has been initially designed as a generic model to evaluate the product quality within domestic environment. Therefore, feedbacks of global consumers were not available for this study. Originality/Value of paper: This research is based on the most recent results of KSQEI through which national quality levels have been measured for 100 firms over 20 industrial groups. For each industry, 717 respondents (90% consumers and 10% experts) on the average have been surveyed in order to assess the product quality, hedonic quality, and consumer``s satisfaction. This study reveals the current level of product quality in Korea and delineates both the importance of weighing methodologies and the prioritization strategy using consumer``s satisfactory group when employing KSQEI for quality improvement.

        Local Structural Changes Caused in Ni-Mn-Ga Alloy Films by Thermal Effects

        The local structural changes of Ni-Mn-Ga alloy films were investigated, according to the deposition temperature, by using the Ni, the Mn, and the Ga K-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and glancing-angle X-ray diraction. The structural characters of the film deposited at 720 K are similar to those of bulk Ni2MnGa with a cubic L21 phase, and the film deposited onto a cooled substrate (s150 K) is in a disordered structure. After annealing, the structural changes in the films deposited at 150 K are as follows: the films annealed at temperatures below 440 K are in a disordered phase, the structural ordering starts in the films annealed at 520 K, at 600 K, the films become ordered, and at 680 K, the cubic L21 and the tetragonal phases coexist. By XAFS, the Ni, the Mn and the Ga atoms are found to be arranged as an ordered cubic L21 phase in the ordered film and as Ni-Mn-Ga alloy clusters in the disordered film.

      • Mapping cell behavior across a wide range of vertical silicon nanocolumn densities

        <P>Over the past decade, vertical nanostructures have provided novel approaches for biomedical applications such as intracellular delivery/detection, specific cell capture, membrane potential measurement, and cellular activity regulation. Although the feasibility of the vertical nanostructures as a new biological tool has been thoroughly demonstrated, a better understanding of cell behavior on vertical nanostructures, in particular the effects of geometry, is essential for advanced applications. To investigate the cell behavior according to the variation of the spacing between vertical nanostructures, we have interfaced fibroblasts (NIH3T3) with density-controlled vertical silicon nanocolumn arrays (vSNAs). Over a wide range of vSNA densities, we observe three distinct cell settling regimes and investigate both overall cell behavior (adhesions, morphology, and mobility) and detailed biomacromolecule variance (F-actin and focal adhesion) across these regimes. We expect that these systematic observations could serve as a guide for improved nanostructure array design for the desired cell manipulation.</P>
