        Notes on bird species newly recorded in Korea

        A total of 527 species of birds have been recorded in Korea. We summarize the records of three genera and six species that have been newly reported in Korea, discovered through the avian monitoring programs carried out by The National Institute of Biological Resources from 2013 to 2016. These six newly recorded species are; Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris), Lesser Scaup (Aythya affinis), Bufflehead (Bucephala albeola), Black-winged Kite (Elanus caeruleus), Mongolian Lark (Melanocorypha mongolica) and Crested Myna (Acridotheres cristatellus). One Ring-necked Duck was observed on March 23, 2014 in Jungrangcheon Stream. One male Lesser Scaup was recorded on February 24, 2014 in Gyeongpoho Lagoon. A male bufflehead was first seen in Yeongrangho Lagoon on January 26, 2013. The Black-winged Kite was first observed on January 23, 2013 at the Gangseo Wetland Ecological Park. One Mongolian Lark was also recorded on May 11, 2016 and May 12, 2017 in Marado Island. The Crested Myna was first observed on April 20, 2016 in Seomando, Island.

      • 肥肉豚의 血液化學値에 關한 硏究

        全羅南道 順天地方을 中心으로 한 養豚場에서 出荷된 肥肉豚을 對象으로 血液化學値를 調査했다. 돼지의 年齡은 7個月부터 13個月이었으며, 總 276頭(♀ 181,♂ 95)를 對象으로 屠畜場에서 採血했는데 Landrace와 Berkshire의 一代難種이 大部分이었다. 한편 本 實驗에서 使用한 무??豚은 모두가 去勢한 것이었다. 1. 測定한 血液化學値는 血淸?萄糖量, 血淸總蛋白量, ablumin量, globulin量, 血淸尿素?素量, 血淸 cholesterol量, calcium量, 無機燐量, 血淸 transaminase(SGOT와 SGPT)等이었다. 2. 本 調査에서 나타난 각종 血液化學値의 範圍 및 平均値는 이미 報告된 結果와 거의 一致하였다. 3. 血淸cholesterol量은 性別差가 없었고 겨울에 높은値를 보인 反面, 여름과 가을에는 낮은 치를 보였다. 4. 血淸總蛋白量의 季節的變動은 globulin量의 變動에 起因한 것이었고, globulin量은 全般的으로 높게 나타났는데 特히 여름철의 增加가 뚜렷했다. Samples of blood were taken from 276 fattening pigs(181 intact females and 95 castrated males) at slaughter and serum chemical values were determined. The pigs were from Suncheone area, Chonnam Province; their age ranged 7 to 13 months; most of them were crossbreds of Landrace and Berkshire. 1. Determined blood chemical values in the prestent study were glucose, total protein, albumin, globulin, serum urea nitrogen, cholesterol, calcuim, phosphorus, serum glutamin oxalacetic transaminase and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase. 2. The ranges and means of the chemical values in the present study were reconcilable with the normal values previously reported. 3. Sex differences between castrated males and intact prepubertal females were not observed in serum cholesteol levels. There were significant differences between the means of seasons, with the higher cholesterol values being observed during the winter as compared with summer and fall. 4. Seasonal changes of total protein cantent were due to the seasonal changes of globulin values. The globulin values in the present study were higher than those reported previously by others; the values were highest during summer season.

        기능적 방법을 이용한 소아의 하악과두 골절의 처치 : 증례 보고 A case report

        The pediatric condylar fracture occurs very frequently in the mandible, but this injury is occasionally ignored due to difficulty of diagnosis and no cooperation of patient. The adequate initial diagnosis and active treatment must be performed because delayed and improper treatment lead to possible severe complication such as TMJ ankylosis and retardation of mandibular development. Most pediatric condylar fracture is mainly performed by the conservative or functional treatment. but it may be required open reduction according to cases. In this study, Activator is applied for functional treatment of pediatric condylar fracture and fair recovery of jaw function is acquired.

      • 뇌경색 환자에서의 혈장 지질과 항산화 영양소 상태에 관한 연구

        뇌경색 환자의 생활 습관, 혈장 지질 및 적혈구 지질 및 적혈구 지질의 지방산 조성과 혈장 지질과산화물 농도, 항산화영양소인 비타민 E, A, β-carotene 상태를 측정하여 대조군의 자료화 비교함으로써 뇌경색 환자의 혈장 지질과 항산화영양소 상태를 조사하였다. 18명의 남자 환자군의 평균연령은 65.7(45~76)세였으며 36명의 건강한 남자대조군의 평균연령은 59.2(55~65)세였으며, 체중, 신장 및 BMI는 대조군과 환자군 간에 유의한 차이가 없었다. 환자군의 발병전 흡연 정도와 음주정도는 대조군보다 유의하게 높았으며, 적혈구지방산 조성에 있어서 포화지방산의 비가 유의하게 높았고 다불포화지방산의 비는 유의하게 낮았으며, 통계적인 유의성은 없으나 항산화 영양소 상태가 대조군에 비하여 불량하고 혈장 과산화지질의 종도가 높은 경향을 보였다. 이의 원인으로서는 환자군이 대조군에 비해 흡연율이 높고 음주량이 많으며 운동부족 등 부적합한 생활습관이 주요한 요인으로 작용한 것으로 판단되며, 따라서 바람직한 생활습관이 뇌경색질환의 예방에 기본요건이 된다고 사료된다. To investigate antioxidant and lipid staus of patients with cerebral infarction, 18 male patients admitted to Kyungpook National University Hospital from March to October, 1995 were compared to 36 healty male control subjects. The percentages of heavy smoking, heavy drinking and nonexercise before diagnosis of the disease in the patient group were significantly higher compared to the current status of the control group. Total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and lipoprotein(a) were significantly higher in the patients than the control subjects. For the fatty acid composition of erythrocytes, total saturated fatty acids(% by weight) were significantly higher and total polyunsaturated fatty acids lower in the patient group than in the control group. Plasma levels of retinol, α-tocopherol and β-carotene were not significantly different between the patient group and the control group at the level of P<0.05 Alpha-tocopherol/total cholesterol of plasma was lower in the patient group with the statistical significance of P=0.054, and the plasma level of TBARS of the patient group was 1.98 nmol MDA/mL as compared to the level of the control, 1.60 nmol MDA/mL(P=0.066). Our results indicate that oxidative stress was increased in the patients with cerebral infraction, and such outcome might have resulted from undesirable life styles.

      • 관상동맥질환의 중증도와 혈중지질치 및 아포지단백과의 상관관계

        목적 : 관상동맥질환의 위험인자로서 혈청지질 및 혈장 지단백에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있고 또 아포지단백이 관상동맥 질환을 일으키는데 다른 지질보다 더 중요하다는 연구가 많이 발표되고 있으나 우리나라에서는 아포지단백에 대한 연구가 그리 많지 않은 편이다. 이에 저자등은 혈중지질치와 새로운 위험인자로 알려지고 있는 아포지단백치를 측정하고 이들과 관상동맥질환 중증도와의 상관 관계를 알아보았다. 대상 및 방법 : 관상동맥질환이 의심되어 관상동맥조영술을 실시한 69명의 환자를 대상으로 하였으며 12시간 이상 공복후 혈청을 채취하여 총콜레스테롤, 중성지방, HDL-콜레스테롤, 아포지단백 AI (ape AI), 아포지단백 B (ape B)를 측정하였다. 관상동맥조영상 50%이상의 협착이 있는 혈관의 수 (lesion number), 최대협착을 합한 값 (lesion score), 각 분절의 최대협착을 합한 값 (total score), 가장 심한 협착 값 (peak stenosis) 등으로 관상동맥 중증도를 알아본 다음 이들과 혈청지질치, 아포지단백과의 상관 관계를 비교해 보았다. 상관 관계는 Spearman's correlation coefficient를 구하였다. 결과 : 관상동맥질환의 중증도와 각 지질치 간의 상관 관계를 비교해 보았을때 lesion number와 관계있는 것은 연령 (r=0.2789), 중성지방치 (r=0.2829)이며 lesion score와 관계있는 것은 연령(r=0.2911), 중성지방치0 (r=0.3316), 총콜레스테롤과 HDL-콜레스테롤의 비 (r=0.2361), apo B 치(r=0.2759), apo AI과 apo B의 비 (-0.3154)로 나타났다. Total score는 연령 (r=0.3100), 총콜레스테롤치 (r=0.2452), 중성지방치 (r=0.3022), 총콜레스테롤과 HDL-콜레스테롤의 비 (r=0.2770), apo B치 (r=0.2927), apo AI과 apo B의 비 (r=-0.3408)와 연관이 있었고 peak stenosis는 중성지방 치(r=0.3305), ape B 치 (r=0.2968), apo AI과 apo B의 비 (r=-0.3977)와 관계가 있었다. 연령으로 조정하여 partial correlation을 좌면, 관상동맥조영술상 중증도는 중성지방치 (r=0.3408), apo B 치(r=0.2877), apo AI과 apo B의 비 (r=-0.3460)와 유의한 상관 관계가 있었다. 이중 ape AI과 ape B의 비는 lesion score (r=-0.2640), total score (r=-0.3057), peak stenosis (r=-0.3460)와 유의한 상관관계를 보였다. 결론 : 이상의 결과로 보아 apo B치 그리고 apo AI과 apo B의 비가 관상동맥 중증도의 예견인자로 다른 혈중 지질 치보다 더 유용하다는 것을 알 수 있었다. Objectives : Recently, it was reported that the measurements of apolipoprotein levels may be valuable in the clinical assessment of coronary artery disease severity. However there are a few reports regarding to the relationship between coronary artery disease severity and apolipoprotein levels in Korea. Thus, we measured serum lipid and apolipoprotein levels and studied the relationship between coronary artery disease severity and serum lipids and apolipoproteins levels. Subjects and Methods : The 69 patients who underwent coronary angiography to evaluate chest pain were subjected to this study. We measured the levels of serum cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein AI(apo AI) and apolipoprotein B(Apo B) and measured the severity of coronary artery disease by lesion number, lesion score, total score and peak stenosis. Then, we studied the relationship between coronary artery disease severity and apolipoproteins and calculated the correlation coefficient. Results : The results were as follows. There are significant correlation(r=0.3) between age, triglycerides, apo B levels, apo AI/B ratio and coronary artery disease severity. In controlling for age, tyiglycerides, apo B levels and apo AI/B ratio shows significant correlation(r=0.3) with coronary artery disease severity. Especially, apo AI/B ratio shows significant correlation(r=0.3) with lesion number, total score and peak stenosis. Conclusion : These results suggest that the apo B levels and the ratio of apo AI/B can be used as significant independent predictor for coronary artery disease severity rather than other serum lipid levels.

        급성심근경색증의 조기진단에 있어서 Myoglobin의 진단적 의의

        Background: Exact and early diagnosis of acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is essential for the subsequent routine management of this frequent cardiovascular disease. Currently, AMI has been diagnosed using the combination of the history, electrocardiogram(ECG), and biochemical markers of myocardial necrosis. At present, many biochemical markers are used to diagnose AMI. In this study, the predictive values of serum myoglobin and creatine kinase-MB(CK-MB) were compared in the emergency department. Methods: Fifty-four consecutive patients who presented within 12 hours from onset of chest pain of presumed cardiac origin were enrolled into the study. Patients with trauma or renal failure were excluded. The serial serum myoglobin and CK-MB levels were obtained prospectively at admission and 2, 4, 6, 12, 24 and 48 hours after admission. We compare the levels of serum myoglobin and CK-MB within 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 24, and 48 hours after symptom onset respectively. And we compare the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of myoglobin and CK-MB. Results: using World Health Organization criteria, 28 AMI patients were identified. Mean time from symptom onset to presentation was 4.1±1.3 hours. The predictive values of serum myoglobin were better than those of CK-MB within 6 hours after symptom onset. But, 6 hours after symptom onset, the predictive values of CK-MB were better than those of serum myoglobin. The false positive cases of serum myoglobin were 3-one was lung cancer with pleural effusion and the others were unstable angina. The false positive cases of CK-MB were 6-one case was viral myocarditis and the ohters were unstable angina. Conclusion: To compare the serum myoglobin and CK-MB in the diagnosis of AMI, serum myoglobin had better predictive values than CK-MB within 6 hours after symptom onset and useful in the early diagnosis of AMI. But, 6 hours after symptom onset, CK-MB had better predictive values than serum myoglobin and useful in following up.

        Catalytic Oxidation of Trichloroethylene over Pd-Loaded Sulfated Zirconia

        The oxidative decomposition of trichloroethylene (TCE) was investigated using palladium catalysts supported on pure and sulfated zirconia. The reactions were performed under dry and wet conditions in the temperature between 200 and $550^{\circ}C$ keeping GHSV of 14,000 $h^{-1}.$ The products such as $C_2Cl_4,\;C_2HCl_5,\;CO\;and\;CO_2$ were observed in the reaction. The addition of water in the feed affected the distribution of reaction product with dramatically improved catalytic activity. The spectroscopic investigations gave an evidence that the strong acid sites play an important role on controlling the catalytic activity. Among the catalysts investigated, the Pd-loaded sulfated zirconia catalyst with 1 wt% Pd was found to exhibit the highest catalytic activity in the presence of water vapor having the stability for 30 h of the reaction at $500^{\circ}C$. The successful performance of the catalyst might be attributed to promotional effect of Pd active sites and strong acid sites induced from surface sulfate species on zirconia.

        Optimization of Acetabular Cup Abduction by Adjusting Pelvic Pitch

        Background: The purposes of this study were to determine the accuracy of our cup positioning method and to evaluate the dislocation rate after total hip arthroplasty (THA). Methods: After positioning the patient in the lateral decubitus position on the operation table, an anteroposterior view of the hip was taken. The pelvic pitch was measured on the X-ray. A positive pitch was defined as the caudal rotation of the upper hemipelvis. Our target abduction of the cup was 43°. We used the cup holder to guesstimate the cup abduction. In a preliminary study, we found that the weight of the cup holder increased the pelvic pitch by 5°. Thus, the target abduction of the cup holder was calculated by a formula: 43° – pelvic pitch – 5°. During the cup insertion, the cup holder was anteverted to the calculated target according to the concept of combined anteversion. We evaluated 478 THAs (429 patients), which were done with the use of the method. Results: The mean cup abduction was 43.9° (range, 32.0°–53.0°) and the mean error of cup abduction was 2.4° (standard deviation [SD], 2.0°; range, 0.0°–11.0°). The mean cup anteversion was 28.5° (range, 10.0°–42.0°) and the mean error of cup anteversion was 6.7° (SD, 5.2°; range, 0.0°–27.6°). Of all, 82.4% of the cups (394 / 478) were within the safe zone: 30°–50° abduction and 10°–35° anteversion. During 2- to 5-year follow-up, no hip dislocated. Conclusions: Our adjusting method according to the pelvic pitch can be a reliable option for optimizing the cup abduction in THA.

        Osteoporotic Fractures among Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulator Users in South Korea: Analysis Using National Claims Database

        Background: We evaluated (1) compliance with selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) use in postmenopausal women; and (2) the risk of osteoporotic fractures according to compliance and other patient characteristics. Methods: National claims data of postmenopausal women from January 2013 to December 2014 were reviewed. Demographics, comorbidities, type of medical institution, and patient compliance were investigated. Compliance was measured according to medication possession ratio (MPR) and the patients were classified into compliant (MPR ≥80%) or non-compliant (MPR <80%) groups. Osteoporotic fractures were followed up for 2 years after prescription. Results: Among 15,166 postmenopausal women, 4,130 were categorized as compliant. Osteoporotic fractures were confirmed in 669 patients. The hip fracture rate in the non-compliant group (0.39%) was marginally higher than that in the compliant group (0.36%; P=0.06). Compared to age 50 to 54 years, age 55 to 59 years showed protection against fractures (hazard ratio [HR], 0.57; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.379–0.857; P=0.007), while those over 70 years showed a higher risk of fractures (HR, 2.035; 95% CI, 1.485–2.789; P<0.0001 for age 70–74 years; HR, 2.197; 94% CI, 1.588–3.041; P<0.0001 for age 75–79 years; and HR, 3.53; 95% CI, 2.493–4.999; P<0.0001 for age ≥80 years). Patients with mild (HR, 1.29; 95% CI, 1.088-1.530; P=0.0034) and moderate (HR, 1.286; 95% CI, 1.002–1.652; P=0.0486) comorbidities were associated with higher risks of fractures compared to those without comorbidities. Conclusions: Among postmenopausal women with osteoporosis, only 27.2% complied with SERM therapy. A marginal difference in hip fracture rate was observed between the compliant and non-compliant groups. Older age and severe comorbidities were associated with higher risks of osteoporotic fractures.
