In order to investigate the possible application of ZnO films as a transparent conducting oxide (TCO) electrode for film-typed dye sensitized solar cell(F-DSC), ZnO:Al films were prepared by RF magnetron sputtering method. The effects of gas pressure on the structural and electrical properties of ZnO films were mainly studied experimentally. F-DSC using either a ZnO:Al or indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode were also fabricated separately under the same manufacturing conditions. The electro-optical conversion efficiency and fill factor of the F-DSCs using both ZnO:Al and ITO transparent conducting electrodes were measured and compared with each other. ZnO:Al films showed the minimum resistivity of 2.6 x10^(-3)Ω-cm and a transmittance of 91.7% under the experimental conditions of doping concentration of 2 wt% of Al₂0₃ and gas pressure of 5mTorr. ITO films fabricated at 5mTorr of gas pressure also showed the minimum resistivity of 1.5x10^(-3)Ω-cm and transmittance of 92.1%. Although the electrical resistivity of ZnO:Al is higher than that of ITO, the conversion efficiency of F-DSC using ZnO:Al was comparable with that of F-DSC using ITO. The conversion efficiency of F-DSCs using ZnO:Al and ITO electrodes are about 2.8% and 2.9%, respectively.

In this paper, we studied the method of electrets electrode which formed to accumulate negative electric charges by corona discharges. The breakdown voltage samples and damaged samples by various corona discharges have made material stabilization and improved characteristics of electric charge storage throughout the annealing processes. After the experiment made material stabilization nearly melting point by many kinds of annealing conditions, we did the corona discharge again by the charged high voltages, a discharge electrode gap, and a discharged time. As we compared it with the best condition, we confirmed that characteristics of electric charge storages were improved.

Nine cattle among 18 in a native Korean herd died or were euthanized within 3 days. The affected cattle showed cowshed. The pigs and dogs had been fed leftover food originating from nearby restaurants, and the cattle could presumably reach the contaminated food in the pig troughs. Necropsy revealed a few chicken bones and red pepper pieces as well as large amounts of grain and rice straw hay mixed in the rumen. Botulism type D was isolated in the ruminal contents of one of the cattle. We speculated that the outbreak was associated with the cattle incidentally eating presumably contaminated leftover food from the pig trough.

Background With the emergence of bronchiectasis as a common respiratory disease, epidemiological data have accumulated. However, the prevalence and impact of psychological comorbidities were not sufficiently evaluated. The present study examined the prevalence of depression and its associated factors in patients with bronchiectasis. Methods This study involved a multicenter cohort of bronchiectasis patients recruited from 33 pulmonary specialist hospitals. The baseline characteristics and bronchiectasis-related factors at enrollment were analyzed. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Results Of the 810 patients enrolled in the study, 168 (20.7%) patients had relevant depression (PHQ-9 score ≥ 10), and only 20 (11.9%) patients had a diagnostic history of depression. Significant differences were noted in the depressive symptoms with disease severity, which was assessed using the Bronchiectasis Severity Index and E-FACED (all p <0.001). Depressive symptoms inversely correlated with quality-of-life (r = - 0.704, p <0.001) and positively correlated with fatigue severity score (r = 0.712, p <0.001). Multivariate analysis showed that depression was significantly associated with the modified Medical Research Council dyspnea scale ≥ 2 (OR 2.960, 95% CI: 1.907-4.588, p = <0.001) and high number of exacerbations (≥ 3) in the previous year (OR 1.596, 95% CI: 1.012-2.482, p = 0.041). Conclusions Depression is common, but its association with bronchiectasis was underrecognized. It negatively affected quality-of-life and presented with fatigue symptoms. Among the bronchiectasis-related factors, dyspnea and exacerbation were closely associated with depression. Therefore, active screening for depression is necessary to optimize the treatment of bronchiectasis.

Herein, we report a case of badgers showing high morbidity and mortality rate due to the mixed infection of canine distemper virus (CDV) and Streptococcus canis (S. canis) in a farm where wild animal, badger, is being reared for herbal medicine. During the period of about one month, 120 out of 320 badgers showed severe respiratory symptoms and died, and 3 bodies were submitted to the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency for disease diagnosis. The lung with the most severe necropsy findings failed to collapse and showed dark reddening and had yellowish nodules on the cut surface. The characteristic and common histopathologic findings include multifocal necrosis with hemorrhage of the lung, severe lymphoid depletion of the spleen and intracytoplasmic or intranuclear inclusion bodies in almost all organs. Finally, CDV and S. canis were identified by immunohistochemistry and bacterial isolation, respectively. This is the first mixed infection case of CDV and S. canis in badgers being raised on the farm.

A 4-year-old Holstein cow with progressive atrophy and ataxia was submitted for diagnosis. The postmortem examination revealed multifocal yellowish nodules in the pulmonary parenchyma and vegetative masses in the mitral and tricuspid valve of the heart. Both kidneys were severely enlarged, with multiple yellow nodules on the parenchyma. Histopathologically, pulmonary abscesses, vegetative endocarditis, suppurative glomerulonephritis, and fibrino-purulent arthritis were observed. The tiny β-hemolytic bacterial colonies were isolated from the lesions and identified as Arcanobacterium haemolyticum by the VITEK 2 system (bioMérieux, USA). This is the first documented report of an A. haemolyticum infection in a Holstein cow in Korea.

Skeletal muscle contains several precursor cells that generate muscle, bone, cartilage and blood cells. Although there are reports that skeletal muscle-derived cells can trans-diferentiate into neural-lineage cells, methods for isolating precursor cells, and procedures for successful neural induction have not been fuly established. Here, we show that the preplate cell iso-lation method, which separates cells based on their ad-hesion characteristics, permits separation of cells pos-sessing neural precursor characteristics from other cells of skeletal muscle tissues. We term these isolated cells skeletal muscle-derived neural precursor cells (SMNPs). The isolated SMNPs constitutively expressed neural stem cell markers. In addition, we describe effec-tive neural induction materials permiting the neu-ron-like cell diferentiation of SMNPs. Treatment with retinoic acid or forskolin facilitated morphological changes in SMNPs; they diferentiated into neuron-like cells that possessed specific neuronal markers. These results sugest that the preplate isolation method, and treatment with retinoic acid or forskolin, may provide vi-tal assistance in the use of SMNPs in cell-based therapy of neuronal disease.

Gromwell (Lithospermum erythrorhizon, LE) can mitigate obesity-induced skeletal muscle atrophy in C2C12 myotubes and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anti-skeletal muscle atrophy effects of LE and the underlying molecular mechanism. C2C12 myotubes were pretreated with LE or shikonin, and active component of LE, for 24 h and then treated with 500 μM palmitic acid (PA) for an additional 24 h. Additionally, mice were fed a HFD for 8 weeks to induced obesity, and then fed either the same diet or a version containing 0.25% LE for 10 weeks. LE attenuated PA-induced myotubes atrophy in differentiated C2C12 myotubes. The supplementation of LE to obese mice significantly increased skeletal muscle weight, lean body mass, muscle strength, and exercise performance compared with those in the HFD group. LE supplementation not only suppressed obesity-induced skeletal muscle lipid accumulation, but also downregulated TNF-α and atrophic genes. LE increased protein synthesis in the skeletal muscle via the mTOR pathway. We observed LE induced increase of mitochondrial biogenesis and upregulation of oxidative phosphorylation related genes in the skeletal muscles. Furthermore, LE increased the expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma coactivator-1 alpha and the phosphorylation of adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase. Collectively, LE may be useful in ameliorating the detrimental effects of obesity-induced skeletal muscle atrophy through the increase of protein synthesis and mitochondrial biogenesis of skeletal muscle.
