<P>Human granulocytic anaplasmosis (HGA) is a tick-borne rickettsial zoonosis with fever, thrombocytopenia, and leukopenia. HGA has been reported in Korea in 2013 but it is uncertain how long it has existed. A retrospective study was conducted on patients who underwent bone marrow examination due to fever and cytopenia, with no clear hematologic or microbiologic causes, from 2003 through 2012. Laboratory diagnosis was made by detecting 16S rRNA genes of Anaplasma phagocytophilum from the stored blood samples. Among the 70 patients, five (7.1%) HGA cases were found, and the earliest case dated back to 2006. Two cases met the diagnostic criteria of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) and were fatal. Although HGA has been prevalent in Korea since at least 2006, it is not always diagnosed and has posed a possible lethal health risk to the people in Korea. HGA should be considered as a cause of fever with cytopenia or HLH.</P>
In vitro antiviral activity of ribavirin against severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus

Background/Aims: Severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS) is an emerging infectious disease caused by severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV), a novel bunyavirus. As yet, there is no effective antiviral therapy for SFTS. Ribavirin is a broad-spectrum antiviral agent, which has been tried for treatment of SFTS. In this study, antiviral activity of ribavirin against SFTSV has been investigated. Methods: Vero cell-grown SFTSV strain Gangwon/Korea/2012 was treated with ribavirin at various concentrations. Antiviral activity of ribavirin was evaluated by inhibition of the SFTSV cytopathic effect in Vero cells and quantification of viral RNA load in culture supernatant using one-step real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Cytotoxicity of ribavirin was determined by a tetrazolium- based colorimetric method. Results: Ribavirin reduced SFTSV titers in a dose-dependent manner, with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration ranged from 3.69 to 8.72 μg/mL. Cytopathic effects were reduced as ribavirin concentration increased. No significant cytotoxicity was detected at ribavirin concentrations of ≤ 31.3 μg/mL. Conclusions: Ribavirin exhibited inhibitory activity against SFTSV replication in vitro, which suggests that ribavirin can be used as a potential antiviral agent for SFTS.

This paper proposes a new audio compression algorithm based on an inter-frame and an intra-frame modeling methods. The characteristics of a short period of time and spectrum are modeled as modeling parameters to maximize the compression ratio. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm has feasibility of high compression and high quality.

This paper presents an intelligent electronic device (IED) platform which is based on a new frequency estimation algorithm. The IED platform features not only the accurate estimation of frequency but also the fast network-based transmisstion of fault data and waveforms. The simulation results show that the proposed frequency estimation algorithm improves convergence speed, and has lower frequency estimation error compared with those of conventional algorithms. The network-based IED is designed to ensure transmission latency being less than 1.0 % of sampling interval.
Hijikia fusiforme Protects Against Ovariectomy-Induced Bone Loss in Rats

The prophylactic effects of Hijikia fusiforme on bone metabolism were examined using in vitro indices of bone formation and resorption. As the indices of bone formation, osteoblast proliferation and differentiation were measured through mitochondrial enzyme activity [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay] and bone marker alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity. The aqueous extract of H. fusiforme stimulated the proliferation of the human osteoblast-like cell line MG63 and the ALP activity of the mouse osteoblast-like cell line MC3T3-E1. Moreover, extracellular matrix mineralization was accelerated by the addition of H. fusiforme. As the indices of bone resorption, differentiation of the murine macrophage/osteoclast precursor cell line RAW 264.7 by receptor activator of nuclear factor-jB ligand (RANKL) was measured as tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase–positive multinucleated cells, which were suppressed by H. fusiforme. Additionally,H. fusiforme lowered the secreted amount of RANKL that is required for the osteoclastic differentiation and activation, but the amount of osteoprotegerin as a decoy receptor for RANKL was not affected. The bone-protective effects of H. fusiforme in estrogen-deficient ovariectomized rats were also investigated. Osteoporosis was induced in female Sprague–Dawley rats by ovariectomy for 15 weeks, and then H. fusiforme was orally administered at a dose of 100 mg/kg of body weight every day for 6 weeks. Bone mineral density in the group orally administered H. fusiforme was increased, compared with ovariectomized rats, but not significantly (P > .05). Oral administration of H. fusiforme improved microarchitecture of bone in terms of bone volume (bone volume/total volume ratio) and trabecular separation (P < .05). The amounts of osteocalcin and C-telopeptide type I collagen in serum were measured as the biomarkers for bone formation and resorption. The level of osteocalcin in serum was increased, but not significantly. However, the level of C-telopeptide type I collagen in serum was significantly decreased (P < .05). When the results are taken together, the present study indicates that H. fusiforme might be useful in the treatment of osteoporosis.
지속가능 발전을 위한 소비자 교육용 교육 연극 프로그램 개발

Consumer education which changes human value and attitude to attain practice is necessary to solve the problem of environmental, social, and economical sustainability resulted from material and present-oriented consumption and decrease the effect of consumption on the sustainabilities. However, since the present consumer education is biased toward a traditional viewpoint of economical consumption, management of allowances, and rational purchase and its teaching method still stays on memorizing, cramming and one sided lecture, consumer education containing a key value of sustainable development have not been carried out successfully. Specifically, the consumer education in an elementary school treats mainly just on environmental conservation and economical knowledge even though quite much time is arranged in every school year. So, complement of contents such as understanding of relation between natural resources and consumption and the role and responsibility of a consumer is required to emphasis the sustainable development. In this work, a student-oriented educational drama programme for consumer education is developed with respect to an familiar theme of resources such as water, wood, food, and electricity. Educational drama is an efficient teaching method for consumer education of an elementary school student since it makes students experience virtual situation and produce an interest and active participation. How to execute consumer education in an elementary school textbook was analyzed and an educational drama programme was developed and applied, and finally, the programme was qualitatively improved. The paper survey on five teachers practicing the present programme reveals that is it can be affirmatively evaluated since it is familiar to students and leads to their interests and participation. Consequently, it can be confirmed that the present programme can be effective to perform consumer education for sustainable development.

가드너 증후군은 APC 유전자가 다양한 발현을 보이는 질환이다. 가드너 증후군은 가족성 선종성 용종증의 한 변형으로 분류되고 상염색체 우성으로 유전되는 질환으로 위장관의 용종증, 골종, 다양한 양성 연부조직 종양과 장 이외의 병변들이 동반된다. 드물게 동반되는 종양으로 갑상선의 유두암, 담도 종양, 부신 종양 등이 있다. 지금까지 부신 종양의 동반이 드물다고 알려져 있지만 일반인에서도 우연한 부신 종양이 많이 발견되고 있으며 가족성 선종성 용종증에서는 일반인 보다 더 많은 빈도로 발견된다는 보고도 있다. 가드너 증후군은 예방적 대장 절제술 후 오랜 생존 기간을 유지할 수 있지만 부신 선암이 동반된 경우 예후에 영향을 미칠 수 있으므로 가드너 증후군이나 가족성 선종성 용종증이 진단되면 부신 종양의 동반 유무를 확인해야 한다. 저자들은 37세 남자에서 발생한 부신 선종을 동반한 가드너 증후군 1예를 경험하여 보고한다. Gardners syndrome is a single gene disorder with variable manifestations associated with the adenomatous polyposis coli (APC) gene; including gastrointestinal polyposis and osteomas associated with a variety of benign soft tissue tumors and other extraintestinal manifestations. Infrequently associated tumors include papillary carcinoma of the thyroid, biliary neoplasia and adrenal neoplasia, both benign and malignant. It is classified as a variant of classic familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) and is an autosomal dominant disease. The incidence of incidentaloma in FAP patients is known to be higher than general population. The occurrence of an adrenal carcinoma could affect a patient`s prognosis with Gardners syndrome. Increased awareness of this lesion is important in patients with Gardners syndrome who have extended lifespan after prophylactic colectomy. We report a 37 year old case of Gardners syndrome associate with adrenal adenoma.(Korean J Med 71:415-419, 2006)
