First Report of Sclerotinia White Rot Caused by Sclerotinia nivalis on Panax ginseng in Korea

Sclerotinia white rot disease was observed on 5 and 6-year-old ginseng (Panax ginseng) roots in Hongchun,Cheorwon, and Yanggu, Gangwon Province, Korea from 2006 to 2010. Symptoms included a brownish watery soft rot of the roots, and black sclerotia were often found on the rotten roots. The causal agent of the disease was identified as Sclerotinia nivalis based on cultural characteristics and sequence analyses of the internal transcribed spacer region of rDNA and β-tubulin gene with 100% sequence similarity. Pathogenicity tests were performed on 2-year-old ginseng roots with mycelium plugs without wounds. A watery soft rot of the roots and black sclerotia were observed 10 days after inoculation. These symptoms were identical to those observed on naturally infected roots. The same fungus was re-isolated from the lesions induced by artificial inoculation. This is the first report of sclerotinia white rot caused by S. nivalis on P. ginseng in Korea.

our continuing effort to investigate compounds having anti-inflammatory activity from natural products, Ail-anthus altissima was examined. Among six compounds isolated from Ailanthus altissima, Luteolin-7-O-glucoside (L7G) alongwith ethanol extract of Ailnathus altissima (EAa) were chosen to determine their inhibitory activity on secretory recombinantphospholipase A2s enzyme activity in vitro 2-V (IC50 of about 100g/ml) and cPLA2, (IC50 of about 59g/ml), while L7G showed strong inhibitory effect on sPLA2-A, V and cPLA2 with an IC50value of approximately 40M, respectively.Key wordsAilanthus altissima, Luteolin-7-O-glucoside, Phospholipase A2, inflamation... ... .... phospholipase A2(PLA2). ..... ...... arachidonic acid(AA) . lysophos-pholipid. .... . A series of luotonin A homologues and their aza-analogues were prepared and evaluated their inhibitory activities on COX-1 and 2 as well as their selectivities on COX-2. The aza-analogue of dimethylene-bridged homologue of luotonin A, 3,3'-dimethylene-2-(1',8'-naphthyrid-2'-yl)-4(3H)-quinazolinone (2b), exhibited strongest inhibitory activity against COX-1 and COX-2 dependent phase of prostaglandin $D_2$ generation in mouse bone marrow-derived mast cells in a concentration-dependent manner with an $IC_{50}$ of 39.3 and $1.89{\mu}M$, respectively. Selectivity of 2b on COX-2 over COX-1 was 21 which implied 2b can be a potential lead for the development of selective COX-2 inhibitor.
