        Pulmonary Metastasis from Rectal Cancer on Chest CT Is Correlated with 3T MRI Primary Tumor Location

        Purpose: To evaluate the association between the incidence of pulmonary metastasis on chest CT and the location of the primary tumor on rectal MRI. Materials and Methods: One hundred and nine consecutive patients with rectal adenocarcinoma underwent chest CT and 3T rectal MRI. Two radiologists classified the tumor on MRI as an upper (> 10 cm from the anal verge), mid (5-10 cm), or lower rectal tumor (< 5 cm) by consensus. All chest CT scans were retrospectively reviewed for the presence of metastasis. We used Fisher’s exact test to evaluate the correlation between the incidence of pulmonary metastasis with the location of the rectal cancer and the Mantel-Haenszel test to control for local tumor stage. Results: We only included the 60 patients with upper (n = 26) or lower (n = 34) rectal cancer, because of the complicated venous drainage system of the mid rectum. Among these, 9 (15%) showed evidence of pulmonary metastasis on chest CT and almost all (89%, 8/9) patients had lower rectal cancer. The incidence of pulmonary metastasis between the two groups was statistically different (p < 0.05) when local tumor stage was controlled. Conclusion: The incidence of pulmonary metastasis was significantly higher for lower than upper rectal cancers when the T-stage of the tumor was accounted for.

        흰목이버섯 추출물의 천연물 유래 원료로서의 유용성 고찰

        Tremella fuciformis (T. fuciformis) Berk is an edible and medical fungus that has been used as a traditional food and medicine throughout Asia. T. fuciformis Berk studies have been conducted in various ways, including neuroprotection related to memory and learning ability, anticancer efficacy, and efficacy for restoring and maintaining elevated cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Furthermore, T. fuciformis Berk’s importance has also been on the rise since the extracts derived from natural products have recently been in the limelight for safety and environmental protection as functional ingredients for cosmetics. Moreover, numerous studies have investigated T. fuciformis Berk’s activities on skin care. Due to these diverse bioactivities, the recent research has been focused on the usability of T. fuciformis Berk extract as a novel phytochemical. This article aimed to organize T. fuciformis Berk’s comprehensive effects, emphasizing its value as a useful phytochemical. T. fuciformis Berk would be remarkably effective in protecting the skin based on its functional activities such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. It is thus anticipated that T. fuciformis Berk would be a valuable cosmeceutical ingredient in medical and cosmetics industries in the future. 흰목이버섯은 식용 및 약용 균류의 하나로, 아시아 전역에서 전통적인 식품 및 의약품으로서 널리 사용되고 있다. 흰목이버섯에 대한 연구는 기억력과 학습 능력과 관련된 신경 보호, 항암 효능, 높아진 콜레스테롤과 혈당 수치를 회복하고 유지하는 효능 등 다양한 방식으로 진행되고 있다. 무엇보다도 최근 천연물 유래 추출물이 화장품의 기능성 원료로 안전성 및 환경보호에 각광받고 있는만큼 흰목이버섯의 유용성에 대한 관심도 높아지고 있다. 피부 생리학적 측면의 흰목이버섯의 활성에 대해서도 많은 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 이러한 다양한 활성 효능으로 인해, 최근의 연구는 새로운 파이토케미컬로서의 흰목이버섯 추출물의 유용성에 초점을 맞추고 있다. 본 논문을 통해 흰목이버섯의 전반적인 효능을 검토함으로써 제약 및 화장품 산업에 있어 천연물 유래 신원료로서의 흰목이버섯의 유용성과 가치를 제고하고자 하였다. 이로써, 흰목이버섯은 의학 가치의 효능과 더불어 항염 및 항산화 효능과 같은 피부를 보호하는 효능이 뛰어나 향후 기능성 소재 및 코스메슈티컬로서의 이용 가능성이 높을 것으로 판단된다.

        탈모 증상 완화 및 육모 화장품 소재로써 Derma GenieTM-H001의 생리활성 효능 평가

        목적: 본 연구는 Derma GenieTM-H001을 이용하여 세포 내 항산화, 항염, 광보호, 항안드로겐 및 모발 성장과 연관된 유전자 발현 변화 등을 평가하여 탈모 증상 완화를 위한 기능성 화장품 원료로의 Derma GenieTM의 적용 가능성을 입증하였다. 방법: 항염 효능을 평가하기 위해서 NO assay를, 염증성 사이토카인의 유전자 발현 분석을 위해서는 qRT-PCR을 수행하였다. 모유두 세포 내 항산화 작용 및 광 보호 효능을 확인하기 위해서 H2O2 처리 및 UVB가 조사된 모유두 세포에서 WST-1 assay, DCF-DA assay, LDH leakage assay, UVB-irradiation assay 등이 시행되었다. 또한 모유두세포 내 모발 성장과 연관된 유전자 발현 변화를 확인하기 위해 qRT-PCR을 수행하였으며, 성장기 모발의 유도 가능성을 확인하였다. 결과: Derma GenieTM-H001에서 폴리페놀류 화합물이 함유되어 있고, DPPH radical 소거능이 있음을 확인하였다. 2D monolayer 배양에서는 모유두세포에서 독성을 보이지 않고 세포 증식률을 증가시켰으며, 3D spheroid 배양에서 모유두세포 구형 크기를 증가시키는 것을 확인하였다. 염증성 인자인 산화 질소와 3종의 염증성 사이토 카인(TNF-α, IL-1β, NOS2)은 Derma GenieTM가 처리된 Raw 264.7 세포에서 현저하게 감소되었다. 또한 H2O2 처리 및 UVB가 조사된 모유두세포에서 Derma GenieTM가 상당한 세포 독성 완화 효능을 가지는 것을 확인했다. 마지막으로, qRT-PCR 분석을 통해 모발 퇴행을 야기하는 유전자 발현(AR, TGF-β1)은 감소시키고, 모발 성장에 필수적인 유전자 발현(ALPL, LEF1, VCAN, FGF2, FGF7, FGF10, WNT5A, VEGF)은 Derma Genie™ 처리군에서 농도 의존적으로 증가되는 것을 확인하였다. 결론: 이러한 연구 결과는 Derma Genie™-H001이 세포 내에서 항염, 항산화, 항안드로겐, 광보호 작용 능력이 우수하였으며, 모발 성장 개시를 위한 다양한 유전자의 발현 효과가 높게 나타나 탈모 완화 및 육모 기능성 화장품의 천연 소재로의 적용 가능성을 확인하였다. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the potential of Derma Genie™-H001 as a functional cosmetic ingredient for alleviating hair loss symptoms by evaluating its impact on anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, photoprotective, antiandrogenicity, and activation of hair growth-related gene expression. Methods: We employed various methods, including nitric oxide (NO) assay and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR, to estimate anti-inflammatory activities). Additionally, this study assessed antioxidative and photoprotective effects on human dermal papilla cells (HDPCs) using water-soluble tetrazolium salt (WST-1) assay, 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCF-DA) assay, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay, and ultraviolet B (UVB)-irradiation assay. To investigate the anti-hair loss effects of Derma Genie™-H001, 3D spheroid culture and qRT-PCR were conducted. Results: Derma Genie™-H001 exhibited the characteristics of polyphenols and demonstrated 2,2-dipheny-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity. Importantly, it showed no cytotoxicity on HDPCs and increased the diameter of HDPCs 3D spheroid. Inflammatory mediators such as NO and proinflammatory cytokines were reduced in a dose-dependent manner in Raw 264.7 cells treated with Derma Genie™. Moreover, Derma Genie™ exhibited substantial protective effects against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and UVB-induced cytotoxicity in HDPCs. Notably, qRT-PCR analysis revealed a decrease in the expression of genes related to hair loss and an increase in the expression of genes associated with hair growth in HDPCs treated with Derma Genie™. Conclusion: Derma Genie™-H001 demonstrated promising effects in mitigating LPS-induced proinflammatory cytokines, H2O2-induced cytotoxicity, UVB-induced cytotoxicity, and DHT-induced TGF-β1 expression. Furthermore, it significantly upregulated the expression of hair growth-related genes. These findings suggest that Derma Genie™ may serve as a valuable functional cosmetic ingredient for improving hair loss symptoms.

        Anoperineal tuberculosis is a rare extrapulmonary form of the disease and may present as abscess. We report a case of anoperineal tuberculous abscess, which showed low signal intensity on T1-weighted images, high signal intensity on T2-weighted images and diffusion restriction on diffusion weighted images.

        텍스트마이닝을 활용한 종분포모형의 국내 연구 동향 파악

        종분포모형은 생물다양성 보전 및 기후변화 영향평가 등을 위해 활발히 이용되는 방법론이며, 국내에서도 다양한 연구가 진행되고 있으나, 관련 연구 현황과 최근의 동향을 파악하고 시사점을 논의하여 미래 연구에 유용한 정보를 제공하는 연구는 부족한 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 국내의 학술지에서 출판된 학술논문을 대상으로 종분포모형의 활용 동향과 흐름을 파악하여 향후 관련 연구에서 활용될 수 있는 기초적인 정보를 제공하고자 하였다. 우리는 국내의 관련 학술논문을 수집하여 문헌학적 방법과 텍스트마이닝을 통해 분석했고 이를 토대로 종분포모형 관련 연구 현황과 최근의 동향을 파악하였다. 국내 종분포모형 관련 학술논문은 1998년부터 2023년까지 총 148편이 출판되었으며, 그중 115편 (77.7%)은 2015년 이후 출판된 것으로 나타났다. 다양한 알고리즘 중 MaxEnt 모델이 가장 많이 활용되었으며 (44.5%), 식물을 대상으로 한 연구와 생물종 분포 및 평가, 기후변화와 관련된 주제가 주요 주제로 다루어졌다. 텍스트마이닝 분석에서 가장 많이 출현한 핵심어는 “Climate change”로 다양한 연구 주제에서 기후변화로 인한 생물다양성 변화를 고려하였다. 향후 종분포모형의 활용에는 다양한 조건에 따른 최적의 모형 선택, 모형 간 연계, 정량적인 입력 변수의 개발 등을 고려할 필요가 있으며, 현지 조사 자료의 수집 체계 개선 등을 도모하면 생물다양성 보전과 기후 대응 등 국가 정책 수요에 유용하게 활용될 수 있는 과학적 도구로써 기여가 가능할 것으로 판단된다. Species distribution model (SDM) is used to preserve biodiversity and climate change impact. To evaluate biodiversity, various studies are being conducted to utilize and apply SDM. However, there is insufficient research to provide useful information by identifying the current status and recent trends of SDM research and discussing implications for future research. This study analyzed the trends and flow of academic papers, in the use of SDM, published in academic journals in South Korea and provides basic information that can be used for related research in the future. The current state and trends of SDM research were presented using philological methods and text-mining. The papers on SDM have been published 148 times between 1998 and 2023 with 115 (77.7%) papers published since 2015. MaxEnt model was the most widely used, and plant was the main target species. Most of the publications were related to species distribution and evaluation, and climate change. In text mining, the term ‘Climate change’ emerged as the most frequent keyword and most studies seem to consider biodiversity changes caused by climate change as a topic. In the future, the use of SDM requires several considerations such as selecting the models that are most suitable for various conditions, ensemble models, development of quantitative input variables, and improving the collection system of field survey data. Promoting these methods could help SDM serve as valuable scientific tools for addressing national policy issues like biodiversity conservation and climate change.

        Progressive Transformation of Germinal Centers in Presacral Space: MRI Findings and Literature Review

        Progressive transformation of germinal centers (PTGC) is an atypical feature seen in lymph nodes with unknown pathogenesis. PTGC most commonly presents in adolescent and young adult males as solitary painless lymphadenopathy with various durations. Cervical nodes are the most commonly involved ones while involvements of axillary and inguinal nodes are less frequent. PTGC develops extremely rarely in other locations. We report a rare case of solitary mass present in the presacral space. The mass as subsequently proven to be PTGC. To the best of our knowledge, PTGC in the presacral space has not been previously reported in the literature.

        MR Imaging Findings of Tamoxifenassociated Uterine Adenosarcoma: Report of Two Cases

        Adenosarcoma of the uterus is a rare biphasic tumor containing benign glandularepithelial and malignant mesenchymal components. The tumor has been reportedto be associated with antiestrogen therapy, particularly tamoxifen, but there havebeen a few case reports with MRI. We present two cases of MRI findings of uterineadenosarcoma after antiestrogen therapy, tamoxifen and toremifene in breast cancerpatients. The tumor presents as a large polypoid mass occupying the endometrialcavity, and may protrude into the vagina. On MRI, the tumor typically shows solidcomponents with scattered small cysts and heterogeneous enhancement. Thesefindings are not significantly different from conventional adenosarcoma.

        MRI Findings of Obstructed Hemivagina and Ipsilateral Renal Agenesis (OHVIRA syndrome) with a Blind Megaureter: Case Report

        Obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal anomaly (OHVIRA) syndrome is anuncommon congenital abnormality of the female urogenital tract characterized bythe triad of uterine didelphys, obstructed hemivagina, and ipsilateral renal agenesis. A 13-year-old female presented with acute lower abdominal pain. Magneticresonance imaging (MRI) revealed uterine didelphys, hematometrocolpos, obstructedhemivagina, and right ipsilateral agenesis, consistent with OHVIRA syndrome. Also, awell-defined mass with fluid signal intensity, mimicking adnexal neoplasm was seenin the right lower pelvic cavity adjacent to the posterior wall of the bladder. Vaginalseptotomy and drainage of hematometrocolpos were done initially, but unilateralhysterectomy was later performed to relieve the patient’s symptoms. The cystic massin the right lower pelvic cavity was also excised and confirmed as a blind megaureter.

        Renal Malakoplakia with Wide Extension into the Retroperitoneum: A Case Report

        Malakoplakia is a rare chronic inflammatory condition that results from defective phagolysosomal activity. Malakoplakia usually affects the urinary tract, and immunosuppression is a predisposing factor in most patients. A 78-year-old woman undergoing long-term steroid treatment presented with right flank pain. CT demonstrated a large, multilocular cystic mass with focal enhancing solid portion in the right kidney and retroperitoneum. The patient underwent ultrasonography-guided biopsy for enhancing the solid portion, and pathologic examination revealed malakoplakia.

        Correlation between Computed Tomography and Pathological Findings of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors Treated with Imatinib Mesylate

        Purpose: To evaluate the correlation between pathological and computed tomography (CT) findings of gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) after imatinib mesylate (imatinib) treatment. Materials and Methods: Twenty-six patients with GIST (17 men, 9 women; mean age, 56 years) who underwent treatment with imatinib and who were registered at our institution were included. Eight patients had primary and 18 had metastatic tumors. The correlation between CT and pathological findings was evaluated for all 26 tumors, which were resected after imatinib treatment. Results: The mean size change in the tumors after imatinib treatment was -1.4 cm (range, -7.8—2.5 cm). A reduction in tumor CT attenuation value was observed after imatinib treatment (mean, 29.1 Hounsfield units) in 20 of 26 tumors. Reduced attenuation was associated with non-tumorous pathological findings, including cystic degeneration (6/20), hemorrhagic necrosis (6/20), hyaline degeneration (6/20), and combined pathology without a viable portion (2/20). Of six tumors showing increased attenuation values after treatment, four (66.7%) showed an abundant viable portion. The increase in tumor size was not associated with the presence of a viable portion in any tumor. Conclusion: CT attenuation changes in GISTs may adequately reflect the pathological findings in GISTs after imatinib treatment.
