        Comparison of Gastric Microbiota Between Gastric Juice and Mucosa by Next Generation Sequencing Method

        Background: Not much is known about the role of gastric microbiota except for Helicobacter pylori in human health and disease. In this study, we aimed to detect human gastric microbiota in both gastric mucosa and gastric juice by barcoded 454-pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and to compare the results from mucosa and juice. Methods: Gastric biopsies and stomach juices were collected from 4 subjects who underwent standard endoscopy at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. Gastric microbiota of antral mucosa, corpus mucosa samples, and gastric fluids were analyzed by barcoded 454-pyrosequencing of the 16S rRNA gene. The analysis focused on bacteria, such as H. pylori and nitrosating or nitrate-reducing bacteria. Results: Gastric fluid samples showed higher diversity compared to that of gastric mucosa samples. The mean of operational taxonomic units was higher in gastric fluid than in gastric mucosa. The samples of gastric fluid and gastric mucosa showed different composition of phyla. The composition of H. pylori and Proteobacteria was higher in mucosa samples compared to gastric fluid samples (H. pylori, 66.5% vs. 3.3%, P = 0.033; Proteobacteria, 75.4% vs. 26.3%, P = 0.041), while Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes were proportioned relatively less in mucosa samples than gastric fluid. However there was no significant difference. (Actinobacteria, 3.5% vs. 20.2%, P = 0.312; Bacteroidetes, 6.0% vs. 14.8%, P = 0.329; Firmicutes, 12.8% vs. 33.4%, P = 0.246). Conclusions: Even though these samples were small, gastric mucosa could be more effective than gastric fluid in the detection of meaningful gastric microbiota by pyrosequencing.

        영어로 진행하는 멀티미디어 영문법 수업 설계와 실행을 위한 교사 협력 연구

        The aim of this paper is to explore the benefits of and challenges to teacher collaboration in designing and implementing multimedia-assisted English grammar classes in the aspect of TETE, as well as students’ reactions toward these grammar instructions. This study discusses the results of using English-medium instruction and multimedia in English grammar classes that were designed and implemented collaboratively by a group of instructors. Seventy-eight college students whose TOEIC scores were under 750 participated in a fifteen-week English grammar program that involved using multimedia and English-medium instruction. Subjects were asked to sign up for the online community and take the English-only classes. Three non-native instructors were interviewed and students’ responses to the questionnaire were analyzed to explore the effectiveness of using multimedia and English-medium instruction for English grammar classes. The findings of the study show that, despite the many challenges and difficulties it brings for teachers, teacher collaboration is critical in designing a multimedia–assisted English grammar syllabus and implementing TETE because it ensures good quality instructional materials and improved instructional practice. Based on interviews with the instructors and students' responses to the English grammar classes, this paper also provides pedagogical implications for better teacher collaboration in the field of English grammar education. .

        교실영어에 대한 대학교 1학년 영어학습자들의 인식

        본 연구의 목적은 영어로만 진행하는 영어수업환경에 대한 대학생 학습자들의 인식과 반응을 조사하여 교실영어환경에 놓인 학습자들의 긍정적인 인식과 어려운 점을 이해하는 데에 있다. 아울러 본 연구는 학습자들을 위한 효율적인 교실영어환경을 조성하는 데에 제언을 하고자 하였다. 25명이하의 규모의 수업을 학습자중심으로 의사소통능력향상을 목표로 설계하여 실행한 후 70명의 학습자들에게 설문조사를 실시하였다. 자유형식의 설문문항도 포함되어 학습자들의 반응을 조사하였다. 본 연구는 설문문항에 대한학습자들의 반응을 분석하여 논의하고 실제로 영어로만 진행하는 영어수업환경을 계획하는 교사들과 교육과정을 설계하는 교육자들에게 교육적인 시사를 하고 있다. The goal of this study is to explore college students\ perceptions about learning English through English. This study aims to identify difficulties that students experience and strategies they use and to examine their reactions to learning English through English. The learner subjects were a total of 70 college students who have taken English classes in English for only two semesters. The purpose of the English classes was to improve students’ communicative competence. The main activities and materials were designed to improve students’listening and speaking activities. Writing and reading activities were also provided to them. Questionnaires were administrated to seventy college female students. Open-ended questions were included so that more enriched information about the students\ perceptions about learning English through Classroom English. This study analyzes the participants\ responses and discusses the implications of the findings. This study also suggests some effective strategies for teachers who want to use English to teach English or design the curriculum through the medium of English.

        영어읽기과제의 수행을 위한 싸이월드 활용

        The blog has become one of the most frequently discussed topics among college students. The internet company Cyworld hs drawn subscribers in excess of 10 million in Septemeber, 2004. Creating their own culture, Cyworld users search other people\ s web-logs, communicate with their virtual family members. In addition to its cultural importance, the blogs such as Cyworld can play an important educational role for Korean English learners in terms of a large amount of authentic reading materials and communication opportunities. By using Cyworld, students can learn how to read the various articles aesthetically and how to use the blogs to think creatively. This paper presents an example of reading tasks which were assigned in the Cyworld to help students to gain their aesthetic reading experiences and to improve their critical thinking skills. The main purpose of this paper is to examine features of the Cyworld and its potentially educational place in EFL reading classes. 영어교사의 역할은 궁극적으로 학습자들이 텍스트의 의미를 파악하는 것을 도와 주는 것이라 할 수 있다. 영어교사는 읽기교육의 목표를 달성하기 위하여 교재를 선정하고 학습자를 위한 여러 가지 하습활동을 계획하고 실행한다. 그러나 모국어가 아닌 외국어로 된 텍스트 읽기수업은 모르는 어휘를 번역하는 데에 급급하여 텍스트를 모국어로 번역하는 수준에서 벗어나지 못하기 쉽다. 학습자들이 텍스트를 통하여 여러 가지로 반응하여 지식을 습득하는 데에 그치는 것이 아니라 어떻게 그들의 삶에도 연관을 시키는 수준까지 다다르도록 도와주기 위해서는 단순히 텍스트의 어휘를 해석하는 활동만으로는 부족하다고 여겨진다. Rosenblatt (1994)는 독자중심의 의미를 형성해가는 심미적인 독서의 중요성을 언급하며 학습자들의 삶과 텍스트의 연관성을 강조한다. 이를 위해서는 학습자들이 텍스트의 의미를 이해하고 자신의 ??과 연관지어 한차원 높은 의미를 형성하는 데에는 학교수업만으로는 충분하지 않을 수도 있다. 비판적인 사고력을 배양하고 심미적인 독서활동을 학습자들의 다양한 실력과 학습활동에 걸리는 시간에 맞도록 하기위해서는 교실수업의 제한된 시간의 한계를 극복할 다른 도구가 필요하다. 이를 위하여 인터넷을 활용한 많은 영어학습방법이 연구되고 소개되어 왔다 (이병민, 1996; 한종임, 2003; Chang, 2003).

        Designing an Effective Collocational Syllabus Using Movies

        The aim of this paper is to show an example of English collocational syllabus which can be used in a Screen English class. Collocations are recurrent combinations of two or more words which have a strong tendency to co-occur. A great number of collocations can be found in a real-life situation. Many scholars have implied that the acquisition of collocations is a key to native-like fluency. The significance of collocations in second language acquisition is well documented in the work of second language researchers. Therefore, collocations worth learning and teaching in an EFL classroom. Movies can be good teaching materials for students who are rarely exposed to a natural English conversational environment. Using movies for strengthening students' English collocations can be very helpful for students to acquire English language fluency. Designing an effective collocational syllabus for a Screen English course will help students strengthen their English collocations. In order to design an effective collocational syllabus, teachers need to analyze students' needs and motivations. The movie sequences as teaching materials need to be carefully chosen based on the educational aims and students' needs and motivations. They must be suitable for various activities to help students to attain collocational knowledge. A collocational syllabus can be mixed with a skill-based syllabus or a task-based syllabus. Activities should be carefully selected so that students can deal with them.

        Hepatoid carcinoma of the ovary without staining for alpha-fetoprotein

        Primary hepatoid carcinoma of the ovary (HCO) is a rare type of ovarian tumor that resembles hepatocellular carcinoma both histologically and immunohistochemically in its staining for alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). We describe a 51-year-old woman who presented to our hospital complaining of abdominal pain. Computed tomography scan revealed a large tumor in the pelvis. She underwent total hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy with tumorectomy. A right ovarian mass measuring 9×8×6 cm was found. Histological diagnosis was hepatoid carcinoma of the right ovary. But, immunohistochemically, tumor cells were not immunoreactive for AFP and there was no elevation of serum AFP level. This is the first report of an ovarian carcinoma with typical histologic features of HCO with negative staining for AFP and normal level of serum AFP in the world.

        일반교사들을 위한 연어중심 영어연수 방안

        컴퓨터를 기반으로 하는 정보 통신 기술 (information-communication technology: ICT)의 발전으로 지식과 정보가 급속도로 유통됨에 따라 현재의 지구촌시대를 살아가는 전문인들은 더 이상 과거의 지식과 정보에만 의존할 수 없게 되었다 (김동원, 2001). 새로운 지식․정보의 습득과 활용능력에 따라 개인의 사회적 역할 및 지위가 결정될 지식․정보화시대에서는 교사의 기대 역할도 증대되고 있다 (한상진, 1999) 이에 따라 제 7차 교육과정은 정보화와 세계화 교육을 강화하는 것을 강조한다 (이범주 외, 1999) This study aims to suggest a lexical collocational approach in English for teacher training programs. Teachers nowadays are expected to be able to communicate with them, and use the most recent technology to provide their students with new information. The curriculum also emphasizes the importance of globalization and English language as a foreign language. Thus, it is not easy for teachers to meet students\ needs without their own teacher development in many areas. Along with technology, the language is required for teachers to surf the web freely and effectively and to communicate with many other teachers in the world through emails or in a chatting room or as a news group. Teachers need to be proficient in reading and writing English In order to use the proper information for reconstructing their teaching materials. English programs have been provided to teachers who teach English at schools. However, English programs need to be provided to teachers who teach other subjects who are aware of the importance of English for their own development. Most teachers had years of grammar study at school and are in need of a chance to produce their English knowledge in written and spoken forms. To respond to these needs. a 30 hour teacher training program was designed to improve their English lexical collocational competence along with communicative competence. Seventeen teachers participated in the training English program. The analysis and evaluation of the status are based on a questionnaire performed with teachers. They were also interviewed. This study presents the results of the quantitative and qualitative data. Findings of this study are as follows: First, teachers themselves consider English as necessary and are willing to take English courses for their own development even though they teach other subjects at school. Second, the reasons teachers participate in teacher training course in English and the areas in English they would like to learn are various. The reasons they find it difficult to take English courses are also various. Third, teachers are expected to learn how to read the most. The hours teachers want to invest in learning English are thirty hours. Fourth, teachers in general found themselves motivated in learning English after taking the training course. Fifth, teachers think that they are improved more in building vocabulary than in reading. The present study purports to show how a collocational approach can help teachers with their own teacher development. More effective teacher training program is in serious need so that teachers who teach other subjects can improve their English proficiency.

        영화 먹고 기도하고 사랑하라를 활용한 듣기활동과 그룹토론활동의 통합수업

        The aim of this paper is to discuss the integration of listening and group discussion in Screen English by using the movie, Eat Pray Love, to enhance classroom interactions and improve students' communicative abilities. This paper argues that attention to these two activities is critical to any balanced Screen English syllabus design. This study discusses the results of integrating listening and group discussion activities. Eighteen college students participated in a three week program which involved using the movie, Eat Pray Love. They were asked to sign up for the online community to download their pre-listening assignments and answer the pre-listening questions to get prepared for the class discussion and to improve listening comprehension. They were asked to engage in a discussion that required critical thinking. Their comments on this class and responses to the questionnaire were analyzed to investigate the effectiveness of the integrating listening and discussion in the Screen English. The findings of the study are discussed and can be helpful for English teachers in designing their own listening and speaking program in Screen English. Pedagogical implications based on the findings are also suggested.
