        Horticultural Technology Trends in the Korean Seed Industry

        Using 10,625 valid patents registered among six countries and 6,949 plant varieties registered inKorea, we evaluated technology trends in the horticultural seed industry. The six patent indiceswere investigated to determine the technology stage, such as market capability, technological level,and technological development potential, for different types of crop seeds. In addition, a patentmultilayer (PM) model was developed based on vacant technology, future growth, and entrybarriers to predict the best directions for technology development. In Korea, seed technologies forhorticultural crops have low growth potential, although they are at a mature developmental stageand do not have high market concentration. There is high market competitiveness and developmentpotential for flower seed technologies, whereas technologies for fruit seeds are in a decreasingdevelopmental stage.

        그린볼 사과(Green ball apple; Malus pumila Mill.) 적과의 항산화 및 elastase, collagenase, hyaluronidase 저해 효과

        그린볼 사과 적과의 phenolic compound를 50-200 μg/mL 농도로 처리하여 DPPH radical 소거능을 측정한 결과 200 μg/mL 농도의 물과 ethanol 추출물은 94.69과 92.24%의 DPPH radical 소거능을 나타내었다. ABTS radical 소거능은 200 μg/mL 농도의 물과 ethanol 추출물에서 각각 100.30과 99.16%의 ABTS radical 소거능을 나타내었다. PF는 200 μg/mL 농도의 물과 ethanol 추출물에서 각각 1.76, 1.76 PF를 나타내었다. TBARs는 phenolic compound 농도가 200 μg/mL에서 물과 ethanol 추출물 각각 101.46, 99.64%의 항산화능을 나타내었다. 염증에 관련이 있는 HAase의 저해 효과를 측정한 결과 150 μg/mL 농도의 물과 ethanol 추출물은 각각 33.28, 32.14%의 저해효과를 나타내었다. 미용식품활성을 나타내는 elastase 저해활성을 측정해 본 결과 phenolic compound 농도가 200 μg/mL에서 물과 ethanol 추출물 각각 47.33, 40.92%의 저해 효과를 나타내었다. 피부의 주름과 탄력에 관련이 있는 collagenase 저해 효과를 측정한 결과 200 μg/mL 농도의 물과 ethanol 추출물은 각각 46.19, 65.58%를 나타내었다. 따라서 그린볼 사과 적과는 항산화, 항염증, 주름 개선 등 다양한 생리활성을 나타내는 기능성 소재로 개발이 가능할 것으로 판단되었다. In this study, the anti-oxidative, health functional, and beauty food activities of water and ethanol extracts from newly bred Ruby S apple (Malus pumila Mill.). The results of measuring the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity by treating the phenolic compound with thinning green ball apple at a concentration of 50-200 μg/mL showed that the water and ethanol extracts at a concentration of 200 μg/mL showed 94.69 and 92.24%, respectively. 2,2'-Azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline- 6-sulfonic acid) radical scavenging activities showed 100.30 and 99.16%, respectively, in 200 μg/mL of water and ethanol extracts. The water and ethanol extracts of Green ball showed antioxidant protection factor of 1.76 PF 1.76, respectively. The water and ethanol extracts showed 101.46 and 99.64% anti-oxidative effect on thiobarbituric acid reactive substances at phenolic concentration of 200 μg/mL. The water and ethanol extracts showed 33.28 and 32.14% hyaluronidase inhibition, respectively, at phenolic concentration of 150 μg/mL. The water and ethanol extracts showed 47.33 and 40.92% elastase inhibition and 46.19 and 65.58% collagenase inhibition at phenolic concentration of 200 μg/mL, respectively. About these experiments, thinning Green ball apple was found to exhibit anti-oxidation activity as well as hyaluronidase, elastase and collagenase inhibitory activities. Therefore, thinning Green ball apple can be considered a potential sources for new functional materials.

        결핵균과 비결핵성항산균 검출에 Real-time PCR의 유용성

        Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate recently developed real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay kit to detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) and nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) in respiratory specimens. Methods: We assessed the positive rate of the real-time PCR assay to detect MTB and NTM in 87 culture-positive specimens (37 sputum, 50 bronchial washing), which were performed real-time PCR by using Real-QTM MTB&NTM Kit from January 2009 to June 2009, at Gyeongsang University Hospital. To compare the efficacy with the TB-PCR assay, we evaluated 63 culture-positive specimens (19 sputum, 44 bronchial washing) for MTB or NTM, which were performed TB-PCR by using ABSOLUTETM MTB II PCR Kit from March 2008 to August 2008. Results: Among 87 specimens tested using real-time PCR, MTB and NTM were cultured in 58 and 29, respectively. The positive rate of real-time PCR assay to detect MTB was 71% (22/31) and 92.6% (25/27) in AFB stain-negative and stain-positive specimens. For NTM, the positive rate of real-time PCR was 11.1% (2/18) and 72.7% (8/11) in AFB stain-negative and stain-positive specimens. Among 63 specimens performed using TB-PCR, MTB and NTM were cultured in 46 and 17, respectively. The positive rate of TB-PCR was 61.7% (21/34) and 100% (12/12) in AFB stain-negative and stain-positive specimens. TB-PCR was negative in all NTM-cultured 17 specimens. Conclusion: TB/NTM real-time PCR assay is useful to differentiate MTB and NTM in AFB stain-positive respiratory specimens and it is as effective in detecting MTB with TB-PCR.

        세라밴드를 이용한 PNF 기법 적용이 65세 이상 여성노인의 균형과 보행에 미치는 영향

        Purpose: Study on the effect of the use of Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation(PNF) method by use of the direction and charge regulation which is the advantage of the Thera-band therapy on the walks and balances in old people and comparison with the result after applying the general PNF technique. Method: The study has been performed on 30 females over 65 years old. The study has been done by dividing the object group in 3 patterns, which are number 1, the comparison group of 10, two ones that are applied the PNF technique using Thera-band and third, the ones that are applied only the PNF technique. For the PNF and the Thera-band using PNF, we have divided the group into Combination of Isotonic technique and the Rhythmical stabilization technique according to the patient's acquaintance pattern and applied them to the patient's body. Evaluation was the balancing ability which was calculated by using the BIODEX Balance system / FRT and for the evaluation of walking ability, we have used the speed of walking for 10M / TUG. Result: In the comparison group of 10, the balancing ability and the walking ability did not change much before and after the experiment, which made it possible to compare the group with the other two easily(p>0.05). For the other two groups, we have recognized the enhancement both in the balancing ability and the walking ability, but they did not know much difference between themselves(p<0.05). Conclusion: Though there were not a big difference in the sense of improvement between the Thera-band using PNF and the PNF technique only, we could infer that these two therapy has enhanced much in the walking and balancing ability for people over 65 and through these result we can foresee that not only using the method shown in this study but also by using many advantages of Thera-band, we could diminish the tiredness of healer, enhance the efficiency of exercise in them and also by forming self training program for older people we could help them build the prevention program from falls.

        Clinical reliability of zirconium abutment in implant restorations in the English and Korean literature

        Background: This study aimed to evaluate the mechanical, biological, and esthetic stability of a zirconium abutment according to evidence-based dentistry. Main text: An electronic search was performed. Domestic studies were found using the keywords "zirconia abutments" and "zirconium abutment" in KMbase, KoreaMed, and the National Assembly Library, and international studies were found using the same keywords in PubMed. All identified studies were divided by evidence level from the viewpoint of the research type utilizing the evidence-based review manual. A total of 102 domestic studies (with Korean language) were found, and 9 of these studies were selected. In these nine studies, 3 had evidence level 3 and 6 had evidence level 4. A total of 97 international studies (with English language) were found, and 19 were selected. Among these 19 studies, 5 had evidence level 2 and 7 had evidence level 3, whereas the remainder had evidence level 4. According to the studies, zirconium abutments are mechanically, biologically, and esthetically stable, but the evidence level of these studies is low, and the follow-up duration is no longer than 5 years. Conclusions: All examined studies verified the mechanical stability of zirconium abutments for a period no longer than 5 years. Therefore, a long-term clinical observation is needed. Zirconium abutments are thought to be biologically stable, but they are not superior to titanium abutments. As the esthetic stability of such abutments had a low evidence level in the studies that examined here, a much higher evidence level is needed.

        Betaine Modulates Age-Related NF-κB by Thiol-Enhancing Action

        <P>Depletion of glutathione levels and perturbations in redox status are considered to play a crucial role in aging and chronic inflammatory processes through the activation of redox sensitive transcription factors, including nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB). In the current study, we assessed the regulatory action of dietary betaine in the suppression of NF-κB by comparing kidney tissue from old, betaine-supplemented rats or non-betaine-supplemented rats (age 21 months) and 7 month-old rats. In addition, cultured HEK 293T cells were utilized for the molecular assessment of betaine's restorative ability of redox status when treating cells with potent glutathione (GSH)-depleting agents. Results showed that in old rats a short-term feeding (10 d) with betaine attenuated the age-related decrease in thiol levels, increase in reactive species and TNFα expression <I>via</I> NF-κB activation, compared to the young controls. These findings were verified in the cell-cultured system. Further investigations found that redox imbalance due to thiol depletion caused increased NF-κB activation, and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and TNFα levels, both of which were suppressed by betaine treatment. Based on both <I>in vivo</I> and <I>in vitro</I> data, we concluded that betaine exerts its efficacy by maintaining thiol status in the regulation of COX-2 and TNFα <I>via</I> NF-κB activation during aging.</P>

        Reliability and validity of new evaluation methods using static surface electromyography in persons with neck pain

        Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the validity and reliability of using static surface electromyography (sEMG) on persons with neck pain and in healthy adults. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Twenty-two female participants with neck pain and thirty healthy adults in the age group of 20-65 years were recruited in this study. To evaluate the validity and reliability of sEMG in subjects with neck pain, the subjects'characteristics were recorded and the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and Neck Disability Index (NDI) were examined in addition to sEMG and algometer tests being carried out on the subjects. The site for using the sEMG and algometer was the upper trapezius. sEMG test-retest reliability was measured by intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs). Independent t-tests were used to analyze the differences in the dependent variables between subjects with neck pain and healthy adults. The Pearson correlation coefficient was used to examine the linear relationship between measured variables. Results: sEMG and algometer tests were reliable according to the test-retest reliability results in subjects with neck pain and healthy adults (ICC=0.815-0.979). The results of this study showed that there were significant differences in respect to age, VAS, sEMG and algometer tests between persons with neck pain and healthy adults (p<0.05). The VAS and NDI were statistically correlated with sEMG and algometer results (p<0.05). Conclusions: In this study, we investigated the clinical usefulness of the static sEMG test in evaluating the pain scale of persons with neck pain with high reliability and validity.

      • CO₂ 재순환형 산소연소 가열시스템개발에 관한 실험적 연구

        An Experimental study was conducted on CO₂ recycle combustion heating system using pure oxygen instead of conventional air as an oxidant, which is thereby producing a flue gas of mostly CO₂ and water vapor(H₂O) and resulting in higher CO₂ concentration. The advantages of the system are not only the ability to control high temperatures characteristic of oxygen combustion with recycling CO₂, but also the possibility to reduce NOx emission in the flue gas. A small scale industrial reheating furnace simulator and specially designed variable flame burner were used to characterize the CO₂ recycle oxy-fuel combustion, such as the variations of furnace pressure, temperature and composition in the flue gas during recycle. It was found that CO₂ concentration in the flue gas was about 80% without CO₂ recycle, but increased to 90~95% with CO₂ recycle. The furnace temperature and pressure was decreased due to recycle and the NOx emission was also reduced to maintain under 100ppm.
